Robert D. Clark

May 4, 1955 - March 6, 2007

My long time friend Robert, who I've known for more than 30 years lost his life today, Wednesday, March 8, 2007 at the age of 51 or removed from life support.   Robert was found in his car Monday night or early Tuesday after closing the Red Door Sub Shop, and suffered a stroke and then a massive brain Aneurysm.  He was found unresponsive, and placed on a ventilator with little hope of any recovery.  I am so sad, Robert was a great guy and a true friend and loved by all.  He was very popular as he was "The Man!" in the restaurant business because he was known as the top bartender in our area.   He ruled the Royal Exchange Pub in the 80's, he taught me and many others to bartend; Robert taught many in classes. Later on he went to the Firehouse (when the Redskins were short lived as the king of NFL), Goin' Nuts, and last Waterman's Restaurant all in Salisbury, MD.  He was known for his notorious signature Margarita's.

He succumbed to being a diabetic for many of the last years, even lost some toes, thus leading to his retirement from being the "BEST" bartender in Salisbury.  He was really doing well the last years and worked part-time managing Red Door Sub Shop, and deliveries.

Robert always made everyone feel special or I know that is how he always treated me.  I would always no matter what, wait for the right moment when his business slowed enough to get my hug good night.  It was our ritual for a very, very long time.  I as well as everyone else had the pleasure of knowing him, and able to have him for my friend.  I have all my memories to always keep and will cherish all of them so.  I am truly going to miss you Robert, so much, but knowing you are in a better place and with no pain or ailments is the only way I can bare it.  My whole family knew Robert and we all are very, very sadden for our lost.

When I was told of his injuries and the severity, I just had to go to the hospital even though I knew I could not see him.  I wanted to see him to just hold his hand to tell him how much we loved him.  I talked with Robbie his son whose 23 years old now, and told him how much his Father loved him and loved to brag on him as any Father does.  That he will be truly, truly, missed by many.  My heart aches so much and it is so still hard to grasp.  I called the hospital 3 times yesterday, Wednesday, and each time he was still listed as a patient in ICU.  With each call, I gained, just a little ray of hope and prayed for a miracle.  I had to hope, miracles do happen sometimes, but this morning he was not listed and had been taken off the ventilator.  I felt this need or compelled as I did when I had to go to the hospital.  Just like I did when I first learned of the news, to write about my dear friend, Robert.  It is a way for me to cope maybe, but I know he is okay now.  My prayers go to his Son and all his family.  I love you Robert and I will see you again one day.
