FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

David Smith Captures 2004 Southern Xtreme DirtCar Series Title!!!

Evansville,IN 11-23-04

Though the battle was short and sweet in 2004, David Smith of Inman,SC prevailed as the 2004 champion of the Southern Xtreme DirtCar Series. Driving the High Bridge Automotive No. 11 David Smith Racing MasterSbilt Race Cars/Clements Racing Engines Ford Taurus, Smith opened the season in March at Carolina (NC) Speedway with a third place position in the Southern XDCS championship point standings behind Petey Ivey and Dan Breuer. A strong finish at New 311 (SC) Speedway in May propelled Smith into the points lead which he would never give up the rest of the way despite the fact of not winning a feature event in the season. Smith did garner two Top 5’s and two Top 10’s moving him atop the leader board.

Ivey, of Union,SC, held the top spot in the Southern XDCS point standings after the first round but fell to second in points after the series second event in April at I-20 (SC) Speedway. Ivey kept his Nichols Communications No. 88 Skee Nichols Racing GRT Race Cars/Clements Racing Engines Chevrolet Monte Carlo in the runner-up spot the rest of the campaign.

Dan Breuer of Sherrill’s Ford,NC claimed the top rung in the championship point standings after the I-20 (SC) Speedway event. Aboard the LB Racing/Burnett’s Performance No. 20 Dan Breuer Motorsports Barry Wright Race Cars/Burnett Performance Pontiac Grand Prix, bad luck saw Breuer slide to fifth in the point standings after the May event at New Thunder Valley (NC) Speedway and then to sixth at season’s end.

Larry Blankenship of Mooresville,NC wound up third in the final Southern XDCS point standings. Driving the LB Drywall No. 32 LB Racing Rocket Chassis/Hendern’s Racing Engine Ford Taurus, Blankenship opened the season in fourth place in the championship points and then clawed his way into third after the New Thunder Valley (NC) Speedway event.

Fourth spot in the final point standings went to Doug Sanders of Springwood,NC. Sanders opened the season in sixth place in points rebounding to fourth by season’s end aboard the All State Mechanical/Starette Trucking No. 42 Big A Racing TNT Chassis/Hendren’s Racing Engines Pontiac Grand Prix.

Patrick Sheltra of Indiantown,FL claimed the fifth spot in the final Southern XDCS championship point standings and also claimed the 2004 “Rookie of the Year” title. Sheltra climbed to fourth in the point standings after the New Thunder Valley (NC) Speedway event before settling for fifth aboard the Sheltra & Sons Construction No. 23 Sheltra Racing C.J. Rayburn Race Cars/Clements Racing Engines Pontiac Grand Prix.

Rounding out the top seven in Southern XDCS points was Johnny Collins of Jacksonville,FL. Collins opened the season eleventh in points working his way to seventh driving the Praxair No. 5 Collins Motorsports Barry Wright Race Cars/Clements Racing Engines Pontiac Grand Prix.

Only five events were held for the Southern XDCS season with two feature wins falling to Donnie Moran and single wins to Darren Miller, Jimmy Mars and Billy Hicks. Total monies available in the abbreviated season approached $200,000. A total of 181 drivers entered one of the five events held with 76 different drivers competing for an average car count of 36 drivers per event in 2004. The top six Southern XDCS point finishers started all five contested events with Collins starting three of the five.
