NEW BRIDGEPORT SPEEDWAY LUXURY SKYBOXES SOLD OUT FOR 2004!!

Bridgeport, NJ (February 14, 2004)…..While new Bridgeport Speedway General Manager Jay James has been using every moment of good winter weather to continue to speed the work on the new luxury skyboxes being constructed on the top of the huge main grandstand of the 5/8th mile clay oval raceway, 1st year Promoter Dave Adams has been busy getting things going for the upcoming season, lining up sponsors, setting up the 2004 schedule, and planning events at the speedway to create excitement and enthusiasm at every race date. Hard work by everyone involved in the new venture is already paying dividends, as all the new luxury skyboxes have been sold for the upcoming season at New Jersey’s fastest dirt track!

Adams, spending everyday at the speedway office, said in between phone calls from fans, competitors, and members of the media, “I can’t believe the interest people have in what we’re doing here. Everyday people pull into the track parking lot just to look and see what we’re doing. Jay is working seven days a week and his hard work is really paying off. We’ve sold every available luxury box for the upcoming season, and people are asking us to put their names on the list when we start on phase two of the project, which will add another 220 feet of luxury boxes on top of the grandstand. The next thing we’re going to work on will be selling race night sponsorships. We’re going to really make these nights special for our sponsors, with a fun night in our large VIP suite that will include catering for at least thirty people, as well as tickets for another 100 people if necessary. This will let a company bring customers and employees for a great night out at a fraction of the cost of what the ‘stick & ball’ clubs charge.”

Continuing his discussion of the upcoming year, Adams stated “Things really look good for the new season if the interest shown so far is any indication. While I was in Florida for the Promoter’s Workshop Meetings, I kept running into fans, drivers, and owners that wanted to talk about 2004. We’re going to have a lot of drivers returning to race with us this season, and the new Rookie Class is creating a lot of excitement on its own. In less than a week since we released the Rookie Class program, we’ve had almost ten drivers already sign up, with more calls coming everyday as the word gets around. We’re working on programs that will involve the township, getting them involved at the speedway so they know we want to be part of the community. We’ve got new fire equipment ordered, to make sure our drivers get the best protection. When everyone gets here in April, they’ll know that Jay and his team are serious when he tells people he wants to take this track and dirt racing to the next level.”

Anyone with questions concerning acquiring Race Night sponsorships, as well as participating in the new Rookie Sportsman Class, or any other speedway business, may reach Adams at the Speedway office between the hours of 1PM and 5PM Monday through Friday, as well as all day Saturday. The speedway office phone number is 856-467-4408, while those with Internet access can direct their questions by email to info@bridgeportspeedway.net

JAMES CONTINUES TO PUSH REBUILDING OF BRIDGEPORT SPEEDWAY

Bridgeport, NJ February 7, 2004…Jay James isn’t letting a little thing like a rough winter stop the forward progress of the major renovations being done at the Bridgeport Speedway. James and his crew from PPR, Inc. are working hard at completing the new set of luxury skyboxes that are being erected across the top of the huge main grandstand of New Jersey’s fastest dirt track. James, in between trips up and down the grandstand steps stated: “ We’ve got the flooring almost complete, and the walls are already being installed. It won’t be long before all fourteen suites will be complete,  and they’re selling almost as fast as we can build them. I’m expecting the permits to be in any day now for my next project, which will be our most important job, yet. The biggest complaint I’ve heard from anyone about this place is about the bathrooms on the main grandstand side, and my boys and me are going to put that complaint to rest. We’re going to build a brand new set of restrooms that will work properly and be easy to keep clean. Families, as well as our sponsors and our drivers’ sponsors, will have a place to use that will be comfortable and worry free. To me, this will be our most important task yet in transforming this track, which has some of the greatest racing you’ll ever see, into the showplace that we know it can be.”

Track promoter Dave Adams has announced that he is bringing back an idea first exercised at the track in the mid nineties- the Rookie Sportsman Class, which will debut on Saturday May 1st, and run for eight weeks until June 29th. Gareis Property Maintenance out of Bordentown, NJ, will sponsor the 2004 Rookie Sportsman Class with trophies and a point fund for the top five in points of the starter division. “We wanted to get our new drivers a place to get some experience without getting in the way of our regular Sportsman racing, which features some of the best Sportsman drivers anywhere. George Gareis likes helping the newcomers, and this was the perfect opportunity for both of us to work together and make it happen,” said Adams in between phone calls at the busy Bridgeport Speedway office. A driver must have 5 races or less in a sportsman/modified to compete in the class, and those wanting more information should contact the Speedway office at 856-467-4407 between 1 and 5PM Monday through Friday, or all day Saturday.

When the season opens in early April, fans and competitors alike will see the brand new scale James has had built, which will be installed inside the front straight of the big 5/8th mile oval. The new unit, a drive on scale for ease of use, is all aluminum construction, and will be set in a new concrete pit that will be poured as soon as the weather permits. When questioned about the scale, James said “There’s no wood to get wet and get heavier, and the pit we’re going to build will be easy to keep clean and in turn keep the scale accurate. We’re going to have a light connected to the scale that everyone will see, and there will be no doubt if a car is light.”

For more information on Bridgeport Speedway, contact the Speedway office at 856-467-4407 Monday through Friday between 1 and 5PM, or all day Saturday. Bridgeport Speedway is located just minutes from the Commodore Barry Bridge at exit 14 of Interstate Highway 295.

Monday February 9, 2004

The fourteenth Motorsports Mania this past weekend ended last night with an successful weekend of Motorsports fans, shoppers, and many viewers of the curious side.  As far as I know the show was a great victory once more.  The totals, that were collected for "Ben's Red Swing" were not known at this time, but I am sure the amount raised was of pretty nice addition to the other funds raised in the last year.  The project will begin to be built in May and all of the playground will be built by volunteers.  If you think you might be interested in lending a hand in this honorable project, contact the web site for more information.  www.redswings.com or call 410-341-0880.

Several awards were handed out to for various categories on Friday.  The Best In Show Award went to Steve Hearn Bi-Rite Micro Sprint, with the driver of Erica Hearn.  Emma's Turn Four Driver Report will have an article on this young female driver and the all the actions she has been up to so far and only fourteen years old.  Erica's Micro Bi-Rite displayed orange lights decorated around the ground, showing off the bright white colored body and gleaming purple letters.  The next three awards for  Best Appearing Vehicle to Tim White, Rick Whaley and Shawn Passwaters.  Steve White had the number sixteen Modified Lite located near the J. C. Penny store and runs at the Middleford Speedway.  His display was pretty good with the car appearing on a slant as if it was on a track, plus it had a imitation driver that looked very convincing.  Rick Whaley drives the Late Model number four and was located near the Boscov's anchor store.  Rick is a regular driver at the Delaware International Speedway in Delmar, DE.  Rick finished nineth in the DIS final points for 2003 in just his first year in the Late Model class.  This coming 2004 season, Rick will have two Late  Models out on the track.  The second car will be driven by a well known driver that really gets the car going when he is behind the wheel. Driving the number four-B will be the hot driver of Mark Byram.  Mark holds four Street Modified Championships at DIS.  Mark will not be new to the seat of a Late Model.  Just last year Mark finished just outside of the top ten and still never raced each week.  So look for that team to really be cutting through the field each week.  Shaw Passwaters, is a regular a the U. S. 13 Dragway.  Other awards went to, Alane Emerson from the Centre for the Appreciation Awards, Skywatch for their help in the Theatre, Danny "Chocolate" Myers, Bruceia Zittinger for all of her help leading up to the show (who helps David Brown) and Froggy 99.9 for their help with the Paint-A-Car booth.  David Brown stated it was a great job by all, and we are already making plans for the 15th anniversary show next year. Hope to see you there!

Honorable mention goes to the Delmar Vintage Racing Club, they always put on a great display.  President, Jerry Carr has been collecting history of all the tracks in Delaware for many years along with other tracks from the past.  Jerry always can tell you any story about almost any driver or how he got the picture or trophy.  A lot of people can relate to these old photos and look for a relative or a driver that drove when their Grandfather or Father took them.  Hopefully, you made your way to the Centre over the weekend, the season will soon be starting.  I just love to see all those cars with their new paint schemes and all my adrenalin just gets pumping knowing that Saturday night racing is just around the corner.  That is one thing for sure once the season is hear, I never have guess what I will do on Saturday nights, as I am committed to my track.

Saturday, February 7, 2004

The weather finally stopped raining and the sun came out today, a much desired forecast after all the rain last night.  Today, we had a great crowd of people through out the day and this evening in the Centre to support the fourteenth annual Motorsports Mania Show.   I know that at my display, most of the prizes I had to give out or more of the racing stuff was pretty much gone by late this afternoon.  Although, I got rid of a lot of the racing memorabilia last night. But by tonight I am pretty much left with sodas, and food coupons.  My trivia questions seem to be going over rather well, so my contributions for "Ben's Red Swing" are looking good so far.  The donations and contributions from these sponsors made this all possible, without their help I would not have been able to raise as much money as I did for Ben's Red Swings.   Ed's NASCAR Collectables, Sam's Club, C. J. Racing NASCAR Collectables, Food Lion-Delmar, Laurel, DE, Delmar Pizza, Bonanza, Hardee's of Laurel and Delmar, Racesongs.com, Dough Boys-Delmar, WaWa-Delmar, and Chick-A-Fila.  Thank you so very much guys.

I had the chance to meet Ben's Mother tonight.  I was not exactly sure of his age until today, but Ben was only four years old when he left us.  He battled the cancer since he was two years of age.   For those of you that do not know what I am talking about, the charity this year that the Motorsports Mania Show collected donations for was "Ben's Red Swing".  Ben had such bravery in his days that he was with us, and he wanted everyone to still celebrate in life after he was gone.   All proceeds from the show go toward this organization that will be building the new playground at the Salisbury Zoo in Ben's honor.  Also, the building of the playground is to start in May 2004.  All the building of the playground will be on a volunteer bases.  So anyone that would like to contribute in this or lend a hand in the fixing and volunteer can do so by writing to www.redswings.com. or call 410-341-0880 for more details and information.

I tried all day to find out who won the awards this year for their displays, and I still was unable to get it from David, so I should have it by tomorrow.   But, I do know that Rick Whaley, a Late Model driver, won the Best Appearing display.  New this year, the AC Delco TSS Modified is on display by a couple of drivers, Morris Tucker, a former Modified driver and more recent as an Delmar Vintage Racing Club driver for one will be making the move over.  The word is, around an 18 car count will be starting in this new class so far.  Also, making a transition from go-karts to the new Modified class will be Jeff Brown.  Jeff of Chesapeake Paving and Sealing will try to make this upgrade with the help of Buddy Bozman as his Crew Chief.  Buddy has been in and around racing since he was a boy and feels sure his team will do well.  So good luck to both of those teams, it will be fun to watch all this transpire in the 2004 season.  The Show has one more day, so if you have not been yet, get up on it Sunday.

February 7, 2004, Friday night.

The Fourteenth Motorsports Mania kicked off at the Centre of Salisbury, tonight in Salisbury, MD.  Special Appearance, and a special treat to have, was  the "gas man" former Dale Earnhardt crew member and personal friend, Danny "Chocolate" Myers was on hand all evening.  Myers signed autographs on  various items that were sold for a fee with all proceeds being donated to the charity of  "Ben's Red Swing," the benefit sponsor for this years show.  Myers just made the night very interesting with his tales of racing.  What a great guy!  It was an honor to meet him.

The Motorsports show seem to have a good crowd spite the dreadful rain all afternoon and evening.  I forgot to mention that Kenny Pettyjohn is suppose to be racing pretty much at the VA Motor Speedway, I had heard this before, but I am pretty sure it is a done deal, still not sure.  Kenny is supposed to be helping along ,"new " to the Late Model class, Matt Hubbard, a former Modified Lite driver.  I also had heard that David Hill will also be frequenting  VA Motor Speedway as well.  While  we will miss them, some more, than others, there are some guys from last year that were very strong, like Ray Davis Jr., Dale Lingo, Dale Bounds and of coarse another Pettyjohn (David), who will be challenging all those guys.  So I still  think we will have a good make of the Late Models field.

Several awards were given out for their displays.  I tried to get the names of the winners, but I was unsuccessful.  I should have the names by tomorrow night.  Some nice looking cars, just gets my adrenalin going.  I am just ready to hear that mighty rumble of an motor.  Stop by and see me sometime during the weekend show.

Transformation of the New Bridgeport Speedway Continues As Work Progresses on Luxury Skyboxes

BRIDGEPORT, NJ…Even the rough winter weather the Philadelphia area is experiencing can’t stop Bridgeport Speedway general manager, Jay James, from progressing with work that will transform the South Jersey 5/8th mile clay raceway into the showplace that James envisions. James and his PPR Corporation, who took over the speedway this past November, have elaborate plans for the facility that will bring it to the forefront of dirt track racing in the east. Race teams and fans alike will get their first chance to see this work in progress, when the track opens in April, with an open practice on the 3rd, followed by Opening Night on Saturday night, April 10th.

James is personally overseeing the construction phase of his Bridgeport project, commuting from his southern Delaware home six days a week. After completing a huge cleanup of the whole property, he has turned his attention to erecting new luxury skyboxes that will sit atop the frontstretch grandstand. Even with the extreme cold and snowstorms that have plagued the Philadelphia area, work has still been progressing, with the floor framing almost completed. The next step will be to build the floor for the units, which will run almost the complete length of Bridgeport’s huge main grandstand. When finished, fourteen skyboxes will have been built, which will include a VIP booth for the race night sponsor, as well as a new press box. The remaining units will be available to the public for sale for the upcoming season, with a couple of the rooms already sold by just viewing the blueprint plans. Anyone interested in information on these new skyboxes should contact track promoter, Dave Adams, at 856-467-4408 during regular business hours Monday through Saturday.

James sees the luxury skyboxes as just the beginning of the huge task of rebuilding the aging speedway facility. “I want to take this business to the next level. It’s more than just a facelift- but we know it will take time. We will have to work at it and it will take longer to do it our way, but for the good of the track, it’s the only way to do it. I want THIS place to be the track that takes dirt track racing to the next level” stated James with sounds of Bobcats and equipment generators running in the background. James continued “Too much in racing is funded by the back gate income, with the racers paying for their own show. We need excitement and action to attract fans back to the track and I think Dave Adams will be able to promote the speedway in a way that will enable us to not only give the fans a fun place to be, but also by making the race night show a shorter show, giving the race fans what they want to see in a quicker program. We’re just learning about this business, and we’re going to make mistakes, but we won’t make the same one twice. The racing on this big 5/8th mile is always great; we just need to get the fans in here to experience it. I think when the season starts on April 10th, everyone will see we’re serious about getting Bridgeport Speedway the attention it deserves.”

Bridgeport Speedway will be participating in the upcoming Reading Racing Reunion & Car Show, which runs from Sunday February 22nd through Saturday February 28th, with Monday night being set aside as “Bridgeport Speedway Night”. Drivers and owners from racers that participate at Bridgeport will be on hand for interviews and autographs, as well as representatives from the management team of the track to answer questions about the upcoming season.

Information on Bridgeport Speedway may be obtained by calling the track office during regular business hours at 856-467-4407

Media Release from Fitzpatrick Racing                                                      1/26/04

The 2004 racing season will officially open on Saturday February 7, 2004 at Schaeffer’s Harley Davidson/Buell in Orwigsburg, PA with the annual “Race Day Celebration” from 10:00 A.M.- 3:00 P.M.  All are invited to attend as the Schaeffer’s Harley Davidson/Buell Race Team presents their 2004 Nascar Shortrack Modified cars to be driven by sophomore pilot Shawn Fitzpatrick and veteran modified driver Tim Fitzpatrick, whose one-year “tamper” with retirement has ended.  The brother duo will again return to (one night a week only) Friday night competition at Big Diamond Raceway in Minersville, PA.  Work schedules and family commitments will nullify any hopes of exploring multiple tracks.

After a rookie season filled with more downs then ups, Shawn will return to competition in the familiar orange T-102 mount, a 2004 Troyer Coil Car built in part by Gary Shiley of Shiley Fabrication.  Meanwhile Tim will take the wheel of the all-new VR-1, a second Troyer Coil Car that will fly the colors of the new Harley Davidson V-Rod, as well as Screaming Eagle Performance Parts.

Shawn’s one-year partnership with Kyle Weiss was too difficult for the time schedule of both parties, so they will race out of separate pits this season.  Still, they remain close and Weiss will also field a pair of 21k Dirt Wheels Cars with backing from the Schaeffer’s Harley Davidson/Buell family.

More details about Race Day can be found at www.schaeffershd.com. Mark your calendars for Saturday, February 7, 2004 and join us for a day of food, fun, and all types of Racers on display.

SAXTON UNANIMOUS AS PRESIDENT OF THE EASTERN MOTORSPORT PRESS ASSOCIATION

TREVOSE, PA JANUARY 25, 2004 . . . The Eastern Motorsport Press Association will continue under the leadership of Ernie Saxton as organization members unanimously elected him to the office of President at their annual convention this past weekend at the Radisson Hotel & Conference Center in Trevose, PA.  The organization is made up of more than 200 professional media that cover motorsports on a regular basis. Membership is restricted to only those who meet the high standards set by the organization and operates under a well defined code of ethics. Saxton, a columnist for a variety of publications including the Bucks County Courier Times, Area Auto Racing News, Auto Locator and Inside Track, also publishes a monthly motorsports marketing newsletter titled Motorsports Sponsorship Marketing News. He also is the public address announcer at the NASCAR sanctioned Grandview Speedway in Bechtelsville, PA in addition to operating his own motorsports marketing and public relations firm,  Ernie Saxton Communications, Inc. in Langhorne, PA.
The 62-year-old motorsports media professional has been president of the organization for all but one year since the organization was founded in 1969.

Saxton did announce that at the end of this new two year term he would step down as the organization president.  "If anything disappoints me it is that fact that most local short track promoters can not see the benefit of having a good relationship with the legitimate professional media who can do so much to help their business prosper. Just look at the relationship that exists between other sports and the media. In auto racing, especially on the local short track levels, it seems the relationship is adversarial between the media and the event organizers," said Saxton. "I was happy to hear that Bobby Hartslief, representing Boundless Motorsports, shares some of my thoughts about the relationship of media and local short tracks. And he sees a need to improve the working conditions."
Saxton also said, "We as an organization have to get the message out that our members are true professionals. They have to pass strict membership guidelines to become members. We want to work event organizations and sanctioning body officials to improve the relationship and improve their public and media relations efforts. We are not the enemy."

An interview with Dave Adams at the Motorsports Show by Redbud:

Jan. 18, 2004

I spoke with Dave Adams Sunday about his new position at the New Bridgeport Speedway.  During the Turkey Show at Bridgeport on November 15, 2003 it was announced that Jay James and Brian Ramey with PPR being a backer of sorts, I believe would be taking over the reins at Bridgeport.  I kept seeing Dave Adams on everything for the Bridgeport Speedway lately.  I only knew of one Dave Adams, and that was the one that ran a Modified dirt car regularly.  I could not figure out if he was going to give up racing or was there another Dave Adams.   I have spoken to Dave many times so I figured the best way to find out what I wanted to know would be to ask him myself.  My findings to my questions went like this.

Redbud:  Why did you want to be the spokesperson or promoter for the New Bridgeport Speedway?

Dave: Well, I just did not want to see the track close.  There are only two tracks left in New Jersey, now, with the other track being New Egypt.  I just love racing.   I just couldn't see this track closing, so many fans and drivers love it.  There are going to be a lot of changes to the grounds and it will be a really great place for all to come.

Redbud:  So Dave tell me, do you have any experience in promoting and Public Relations?

Dave:  Yes, I do, I have been handling the promoting of my car for the last five years.  ( Dave has been driving the number thirty-seven Modified ) Going out and getting sponsorship for my car and doing the whole nine yards and so on.

Redbud: So you are confident that you can do this?

Dave:  Yes, I am, I do, the track is so great and I am just very positive about it all.

Redbud:  Now for the question that I was really burning to ask.  Will it be hard to stop racing each weekend, and do you think you can do that?

Dave:  Well, yes because I plan to be very busy and not miss it.

Redbud:  Yeah!  Right!  (laughing)

Dave:  Yeah, I know, but I am truly planning to be so busy I won't miss it as much.  And I plan to run some special events now and then when ever I can.

Redbud:  Finally Dave wanted to emphasize on his goals for the track will be:

Dave:  I am looking to make this track "The best Modified track"  really emphasizing on the BEST, and most definitely the best in New Jersey.  I am looking to make this one of the most Fan Friendly tracks with an efficient show lasting 3 to 3 1/2 hour show.

Redbud:  I congratulated Dave and I am sure he will be doing a great job, I have no doubts nor did I have any before this interview.  Great job Dave and keep up that determination, I love have that determination feeling.  It gets us where we need to be.

Dave Matz will now be driving the Hooters number thirty seven.   Dave has been Dave's Crew chief the last three years.  Dave will be starting pretty much cold turkey, as he has had very limited track time.   Good Luck!  By the way the set up of the cars' display for the show  was really kool.  Good job guys.

Please note this was not a quote per  word interview.   New Bridgeport Speedway Site link

Look as if Jimmy Horton has decided to leave the J&J Shops #27 in echange for reuniting with his former team, the Bill Hewlett #901.  Information about his 2004 plans are sketchy, but look for him to be aboard the Dieter Schmidt-owned #5 Lincoln Auto Body car during the Florida Tour.

UPDATE:  I spoke with Jimmy at the Motorsports Show January 17, 2004 and he verified that he will in deed back into the #901 Modified and  he will be running at Bridgeport Speedway, and special events at DIS.  Horton really did not give a reason for the change, just that it was time and would be driving for them no problems for switching.  Jimmy was not able to suggest anyone that may be driving in his old ride of J & J #27 Modified.

‘The King’ Rules Outlaws ‘Down Under’ Finale
                                                         By Richard Day

GRANVILLE, NSW, AU (January 10) – Steve Kinser showed why he is considered the world’s best sprint car racer Friday at Parramatta City Raceway in the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series’ ‘Down Under’ finale.  “The King of the Outlaws” drove his #11 Quaker State Maxim to the 497th victory of his incomparable career to claim the $20,000 first prize.

“This is a great win,” the jubilant Kinser said as he pumped his fist before the adoring sellout crowd. “After spending so much of this weekend searching for the right setup on this car, we dialed it in nicely tonight. My regular crew chief, Scott Gerkin, stayed home and it is tribute to these guys here that we came on strong when it counted.”

Kinser won the First Heat Race, then earned the privilege of starting the main event outside the second row by finishing fourth in the Dash Race. The victory was Kinser’s eighth in an O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series season opener.  Sammy Swindell, who followed Kinser across the finish line in Thursday’s Preliminary Feature, earned $11,000 for his runner-up run.

“We had a strong car and I am really happy with our run here with a new team, driver and track,” Swindell said. “To be up there so quick is great. We made a few mistakes in traffic there, and that was the difference with Steve getting by there in the end. I have loved my time here and I am pretty keen to come back again next year if you will have me back.”

Joey Saldana won the Third Heat Race and passed four cars to finish third in the “A” Feature. “The car was great and we had a nice hard tire on that really worked good up top or down low there,” Saldana said. “Parramatta City Raceway put on one hell of an event here these three nights, and here is hoping we get even more of these American guys here next year to treat you guys.” Australian Kerry Madsen, who won both Preliminary Features, appeared to be on his way to a second-place finish before a front-end suspension failure with several laps remaining cost him two positions.

Donny Schatz, who won Parramatta’s International Event a week before, finished in fifth place. Jason Sides finished sixth, ahead of Second Heat Race winner Daryn Pittman, 16th-starting Jason Meyers, 15th-starting Kraig Kinser and Tim Kaeding, who won the 2002 O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series season opener. Brian Paulus raced past seven cars to finish in 12th place. Troy Little passed six cars to finish third in the “B” Feature, then raced into 14th place from outside the 12th row in the main event.

The O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series will open its United States racing schedule February 20-21 at Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix, AZ. WoO 2004 O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series Inaugural Outlaws “Down Under” Event Parramatta City Raceway, Granville, NSW, AU Saturday, January 10, Feature Program #1
