SHORT STORY RESULTS (For radio, TV and columnists)

DESANTIS WINS BY INCHES, RANDY STOUDT TOPS GRANDVIEW LMS

BECHTELSVILLE, PA April 24, 2004 . . . Just inches separated the winner from the loser as Meme DeSantis became the fourth different NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Modified feature winner at Grandview Speedway on Saturday night. DeSantis just nosed out Todd Marburger for the win. Jeff Strunk garnered a strong third place finish coming from 18th starting spot. Kevin Hartnett was fourth and Kenny Gilmore got fifth.

In the 20-lap feature for the NASCAR ShorTrack Late Models Randy Stoudt was able to claim his first win of the season and hold on to his point lead in the chase for the championship. Stoudt also was the fourth different feature winner of the season. Second spot went to early leader Harry Neiman while Rick Todorow, Chuck Schutz and Lou Egrie followed.

NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Modifieds and Late Models will be back in action at Grandview Speedway on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.

DESANTIS AND STOUDT BECOME FOURTH DIFFERENT FEATURE WINNERS IN EACH DIVISION THIS SEASON AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY

BECHTELSVILLE, PA April 24, 2004 . . . “The young guys are taking over. My time is just about over,” is pretty much the way Meme DeSantis summed it all up in victory lane at Grandview Speedway on Saturday night after winning the 30-lap NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Modified feature by just inches over Todd Marburger. By bringing the Norm’s Save Station No.357 home first DeSantis, who calls Temple home,  became the fourth different winner and took home the top spot in the chase for the lucrative track Modified championship.

And in the 20-lapper for NASCAR ShorTrack Late Models it was point leader Randy Stoudt of Pottstown adding to his point lead by winning the feature event by a comfortable margin over Harry Neiman.

It took two restarts to get the 30-lap Modified feature rolling and Todd Marburger took control from his pole position starting spot. Larry Solomon gave Marburger a battle for the top money for much of the first 10 laps. A caution on the 10th lap saw Marburger and Solomon making contact with Marburger holding on to the top spot and Solomon losing a few positions.

At the 15 lap marker Marburger was busy holding off challenges from Jason Smythe (running one of his best efforts) with Solomon fourth and Meme DeSantis coming from 11th starting spot to run fifth. At 20 laps DeSantis had moved to third and by the 25th lap Marburger knew he had his hands full trying to hold off the hard charging DeSantis.

With two laps to go the “Temple Tornado,” showing no signs that his time is over and the youngsters are taking over, took command but a lap later Marburger took it back. Coming off the fourth turn toward the checkered flag it was a side-by-side thriller with DeSantis able to win the race by inches over Marburger (Pottstown). Third spot went to Jeff Strunk (Bethel) coming from 18th starting position followed by Kevin Hartnett (Perkasie) and Kenny Gilmore (Fleetwood).

The companion 20-lap feature for Late Models saw Harry Neiman looking like he was going to be the man to beat as he set the pace for the 12 laps. Randy Stoudt, who had started in 12th spot, took control of the race on the 13th circuit after a multi car accident brought out a caution. For the final seven laps it was all Randy Stoudt and the Hutts Glass Co. No. 22 as he finished a comfortable margin in front of second place Neiman (Pottstown). Rick Todorow (Quakertown) came home third followed by Chuck Schutz (Pottstown) and Lou Egrie (Willow Grove).

Qualifying heats for the Late Models were won by Lou Egrie, Harry Neiman and Jason Miller while the consolation race was won by Lee Miller. In the Jim Brown Cash Dash the win went to Harry Neiman.

Preliminary events for the Modifieds saw wins go to Marburger, DeSantis, Mike Gular, Tom Umbernhauer and Keith Brightbill. Consolation victories were taken by Doug Manmiller, Kerry Kratz and Danny Erb while the Cheers Tavern Cash Dash was won by DeSantis giving him a clean sweep of events for the night.

Devine Transport of Honey Brook, PA has announced that they will sponsor a Bonus Award program for the NASCAR ShorTrack Late Models at Grandview Speedway. The Late Model racer winning the most NASCAR sanctioned Late Model stock car qualifying heat races during the 2004 season will earn a $400 bonus. Second in the chase for the most heat wins will earn $200 followed by 175 for third, $150 for fourth and $100 for fifth.

“I remember when I raced a late model and how much I appreciated an extra perk from the speedway or someone else so I decided my company would get involved by sponsor this bonus program,” said Bill Devine who now owns the Devine Transport/Stauffer Construction No.70D NASCAR Modified driven by Craig VonDohren.

NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Modifieds and Late Models will be back as the attraction on Saturday night with the first heat race getting the green flag at 7:30 p.m. A 30-lap feature the modifieds and a 20-lap feature for the late models tops the program. On Sunday, May 2nd, 6 p.m. the DIRT Motorsports Big Block Modifieds Southeast Series makes its first appearance of the season at Grandview with a 40-lap feature topping the show.

LATE MODELS TO GET BONUS MONEY COURTESY OF DEVINE TRANSPORT

BECHTELSVILLE, PA April 23, 2004 . . . NASCAR ShorTrack Late Model racers at Grandview Speedway will have something extra to race for this season courtesy of Devine Transport of Honey Brook, PA.

“Having been a Late Model racer myself I just felt that I wanted to put a little something extra out there for the racers to chase after,” said Bill Devine, owner of the No. 70D NASCAR Modified driven by Craig VonDohren. “I know what I had invested in my Late Model back then so I just figured the bonus money would be a good idea.”

The Late Model racer winning the most NASCAR sanctioned qualifying heat races during the 2004 season will earn the biggest share of the $1,000 in bonus money being posted by Devine Transport and that will be $500. Second spot in the chase for the heat wins will receive $200 followed by $175 for third, $150 for fourth and $100 for fifth. The cash awards will be presented at the Grandview Speedway Awards Banquet in November, 2004.

Devine Transport fields a fleet of transfer trailers and specializes in trash hauling.

The NASCAR Modifieds at Grandview Speedway also have a bonus bucks program in place for the driver that wins the most NASCAR sanctioned qualifying heat races during the season.

Rossi Welding of Reading and D&S Archery of Barto sponsor the $1,000 cash award. Meme DeSantis took home the cash award in 2003 winning the most heat races.

The NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Modified and Late Model racers have the opportunity to race for two point funds at Grandview Speedway. NASCAR offers one point fund and the Rogers family posts the second point fund.

And NASCAR has posted $1.7 million in point fund awards for the 2004 season with regional champions in a position to win more than $45,000 and the national titleholder can take home more than $170,000. It is the most lucrative short track racing point fund in the nation.

Last year Grandview Speedway Modified champion Jeff Strunk earned well over $30,000 in post season awards including more than $20,000 as the runnerup in the New England Region Weekly Series point chase.

The Modified champion also earns a trip for two as part of the annual Champion’s Trip which this year will see the group heading to Aruba for a week. Marilyn Saxton is again putting the trip together and fans are invited to participate. Telephone Marilyn Saxton at 215.752.2392 for more information.

One of the big benefits for racers at the NASCAR sanctioned Grandview Speedway is the excellent insurance package that is provided for each racer. “Of course the only time racers really pay attention to insurance is when they get hurt. It makes all of us at Grandview comfortable knowing that our racers are well protected,” said track public relations person Ernie Saxton.

KRATZ AND KLINE WIN NASCAR FEATURE RACES AT GRANDVIEW

BECHTELSVILLE, PA April 17, 2004 . . . Veteran stock car racer Kerry Kratz wheeled the Hopko Excavating/Spunktown Tavern #1k to victory in the 30-lap NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Modified race at Grandview Speedway on Saturday night while Ron Kline was able to take the win in the 20-lap NASCAR ShorTrack Late Model feature driving the Zern’s Market #3.

Terry Meitzler came on strong to challenge Kratz for the win at the finish while Kyle Weiss managed to hold to third followed by Rick Schaffer and Meme DeSantis. Kline was chased to the finish by Steve Sennott who had lead much of the feature race after starting on the pole. Third spot went to Randy Stoudt followed by Chuck Schutz and Dean Stoudt.

NASCAR Modifieds and Late Models return to Grandview Speedway on Saturday, April 24th at 6 p.m.

KRATZ AND KLINE END TWO YEAR DROUGHTS AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY

BECHTELSVILLE, PA April 17, 2004 . . . Both Kerry Kratz and Ron Kline ended two year win droughts on Saturday night when each won NASCAR feature races at Grandview Speedway. Kratz took the top honors in the 30-lap NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Modified feature while Kline was able to grab the win in the 20-lap NASCAR ShorTrack Late Model feature race. Each driver had last won features in their respective divisions on the same date, August 17th, in 2002.

Kratz, at the wheel of the Hopko Excavating/Spunktown Tavern #1k, started outside the front row and took the lead at the drop of the green with Kyle Weiss right on his rear bumper. At the eight lap marker defending champion Jeff Strunk spun coming off turn four bringing out the caution and closing up the field. Rick Schaffer, the all time leading modified feature winner, was now running second to leader Kratz. The top two stayed the same with Kyle Weiss chasing them right up to the 25th lap when Craig Whitmoyer brought out the caution. In the scramble on the restart Kratz, who calls Bechtelsville home, was able to hold on to his lead with former champion Terry Meitzler now running second.

In the final five laps of chasing to the checkered flag Kratz was able to master the one-third-mile, clay banked oval and hold off the strong efforts of Terry Meitzler to get his first win since August, 2002. Meitzler (Kutztown) hung on for second followed by Kyle Weiss (Hamburg), Rick Schaffer (Woxall) and Meme DeSantis (Temple).

The 20-lap NASCAR ShorTrack Late Model feature had Steve Sennott setting the early pace with the Kochel Equipment #61 with former champion John Giesler giving him a run for the lead in the early laps and Ron Kline, in the Zern’s Market #3, coming on to challenge at the ten lap marker. Sennott and Kline ran side-by-side for several laps with Kline getting the edge with just a handful of laps remaining. Once in front the Salfordville, PA racer was able to keep Sennott from getting back in front and went on to win his first feature race since August, 2002. Sennott (Gilbertsville) came home a very close second followed by defending champion Randy Stoudt (Pottstown), Chuck Schutz (Pottstown) and Dean Stoudt (East Greenville).

Qualifying heat wins for the late models went to Ron Kline, Rick Todorow and Chuck Schutz while the Jim Brown sponsored Cash Dash was won by Ron Kline.

In the modified qualifiers the victories were earned by Keith Brightbill, Cliff Quinn, Ken Gilmore and Steve Swinehart (beating his father Ray in a close one). The consolation races went to Craig VonDohren and Mike Gular. And the Cheer’s Tavern Cash Dash worth $410 was won by Kenny Gilmore.

The next two Saturday night shows, April 24th and May lst, will feature the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Modifieds and Short Track Late Models. At least 13 events of stock car racing presented. Racing starts at 6 p.m.

COMPLETE RESULTS

VONDOHREN AND MILLER WIN FEATURES AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY

Bechtelsville, PA April 10, 2004 . . . Taking the lead on the 14th lap Craig VonDohren controlled the rest of the 30-lap NASCAR Modified stock car feature race at Grandview Speedway picking up his first win of the season. In the 20-lap feature for NASCAR Late Models Jason Miller was able to lead all the laps to claim his first win of the season on Saturday night.

VonDohren, who calls Oley, PA home, started in seventh position in the 29 car field with Steve Swinehart taking the first lap lead. On the second circuit of the one-third-mile, banked clay oval veteran Donny Erb put his mount in front of the pack and was pulling away from the field. At the 10 lap mark defending champion Jeff Strunk had mechanical problems sideline him and a few laps earlier Doug Manmiller had problems force him from competition. The two had battled for the win last Saturday night and were one –two in the point standings.

With 14 laps in the record book VonDohren had worked his way to the front to challenge Erb for the lead and on a caution restart VonDohren took control of the race.

The final 15 laps saw Mike Gular (Harleysville), coming from 17th starting position, move up to challenge VonDohren’s Stauffer Construction/Devine Transport #70D with Meme DeSantis (Temple) running third. And when the checkered flag fell that was the top three crossing the finish line. Kenny Gilmore (Fleetwood) finished fourth after challenging early for the lead and Keith Brightbill (Mohnton) earned fifth.

In the 20-lap main event for Late Models the crash and caution marred event had to be cut to 18 laps with the time limit running out and after the field had been forced to go to single file restarts early in the race as officials tried to get the racers under control.

Jason Miller started on the pole with his #44 and was able to avoid all the spins and tangles to hold the lead for all 18 laps and grab the victory. Second spot went to Lou Egrie, the two time champion from Willow Grove, who challenged Miller for many of the laps. Randy Stoudt, defending champion, was coming on strong in the final laps and the Pottstown ace was able to grab third. Lee Miller (Jason’s Dad) finished in fourth spot followed by Brian Shuey of Hamburg, PA.

Qualifying heats for the modifieds went to Jon Kellner Jr., Ryan Watt, Glenn Strunk, Shawn Reimert and Doug Manmiller. The consolation races were won by Larry Solomon, Paul Kline and Kevin Hartnett while Glenn Strunk won the Cash Dash worth $350.

In the late models qualifying events were won by Randy Stoudt, Mike Kellner and Jason Miller while Junior Grebe earned the win in the consolation race.

Racing action features the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Modifieds and Late Models in at least 13 events of “contact sport” competition starting at 6 p.m. for the next three Saturdays.

FORT WASHINGTON, PA March 26, 2004 . . . Plans for Motorsports 2005 Presented by Sunoco, the fan and racer mid-winter motorsports extravaganza, are already well underway. The three day show that annually brings more than 40,000 people to the Fort Washington, PA Expo Center will take place January 14th through 16th, 2005.

“This will be our 20th anniversary show and we have some exciting ideas for the 2005 show. We have already put together a new layout for the show, a new look, that will make it even easier for attendees to get around the show. And we are planning some exciting fan promotions and looking at bringing back some of the people and attractions that have proven popular in past years,” said event organizer Len Sammons. “We want to make the 20th anniversary show something that everyone will remember.”

Motorsports 2005 Presented by Sunoco will cover close to 300,000 square feet of the Fort Washington Expo Center and will offer just about everything imaginable in motorsports.

“It seems like we just closed the door on the 2004 show and we already have exhibitors signing up for the 2005 show. Exhibitors were really excited about the amount of business and interest that was generated at the January show. Some of our exhibitors reported that the show was a record setter for them,” said show manager Joe Pratt. “We have some exciting plans already in place for the show.”

2004 exhibitors are reminded that they have until April 30th to reserve their space for the 2005 show. And new exhibitors are asked to be in touch with Joe Pratt to make sure they are on the waiting list when all unclaimed exhibit space is made available.

“Our 2004 exhibitors get first bid on locations similar to what they had with the old floor plan but if we don’t hear from them by April 30th the space is made available to others,” said Pratt. “And it is important to note that this year the show has a complete new layout so we need to hear from exhibitors so we can discuss their booth location for the 2005 show and avoid any confusion.”

New show brochures are in the mail to the 2004 exhibitors. For those planning to participate in the show that have not received a brochure a copy can be had by telephoning Pratt at 609.888.3618.

And there are marketing opportunities available that match every budget. Information on sponsoring the show and/or show events can be had by contacting Ernie Saxton Communications, Inc. at 215.752.7797 or email Esaxton144@aol.com.

(4 cars DNQ) From 20th Matt moved forward and worked hard passing cars on a one groove track and avoided several wrecks in the feature, crossing the finish in 11th. After the race one of the top 5 cars was DQ giving Matt a opening night top 10 finish.

Kenny Pettyjohn Rocks A Top Five Finish to Start 2004

STRUNK COMES FROM 22ND TO TOP MANMILLER WITH TWO LAPS TO GO CHRIS SHUEY WINS LATE MODEL FEATURE

BECHTELSVILLE, PA APRIL 3, 2004 . . . Three time NASCAR Modified champion Jeff Strunk showed that patience pays at Grandview Speedway. The Bethel, PA racer started 22nd in the 40-lap Patriot Bank sponsored Modified feature race and took the lead on the next to last lap to grab the opening night victory. In the companion 20-lapper for Late Model stock cars Chris Shuey of Hamburg, PA had a fairly easy time in riding to victory.
Doug Manmiller looked like he was going to open his season with a victory as he held off several challenges to be in the lead at 38 laps after grabbing the top spot at the drop of the green. Craig VonDohren put pressure on Manmiller for much of the race and even got by him, briefly, on the 30th circuit of the one-third-mile clay oval. At the 35 lap marker VonDohren and Manmiller made contact coming off turn two as a slower car clogged the groove. Manmiller made a move to get by the slower car just as VonDohren was alongside of him and that contact put VonDohren into a spin and put him at the back of the pack on the restart.
With just five laps to go Manmiller still had the GMIFirst/American Dental in front of the field with Meme DeSantis now the challenger. For three laps DeSantis put heavy pressure on the leader but DeSantis seemed to make contact with the rear of Manmiller's car and then an infield tire marker wiping out the front end of his Norm's Save Station entry putting him out of the race.
On the restart Jeff Strunk, who had worked his way from 22nd to be in a challenging position, took advantage when Manmiller's mount "lost momentum for a fraction of a section" and allowed Strunk to gain the top spot. The final two spots saw Manmiller trying to get back the lead he lost to no avail as Strunk rode to victory.
Second spot went to a "heartbroken" Manmiller (Wyomissing), followed by Tracy Readinger (Oley), Duane Howard (Oley) and Jon Kellner Sr. (Lansdale).
The 20-lap main event for the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Late Models had Ron Kline in front at the start. By the seventh lap Chris Shuey had moved into second spot and was working on the rear bumper of Kline. On a seventh lap restart after a caution Shuey was able to put the Harry's U-Pull-It #21 in front of the pack and that is where he stayed until the green flag fell. Second spot went to Rick Todorow (Quakertown) who came on in the final laps to give Shuey some work to do in holding him off. Third was earned by last year's champion Randy Stoudt (Pottstown) coming from far back in the pack of 26 starters. Fourth was taken by four time champion Dean Stoudt (Green Lane) followed by Dean Schaeffer (Pottstown).
Qualifying heats for the 30 late models went to Ron Kline, Brian Shuey and Dean Schaeffer while the consolation win was earned by Kyle Pensinger.
In Modified qualifying events for the more than 60 modifieds on hand were won by Doug Manmiller, Steve Swinehart, Meme DeSantis, Tracy Readinger and Kyle Weiss.
Consolations were won by Duane Howard, Jeff Strunk and Donny Erb.
The Advanced Building Systems Cash Dash worth $485 was won by Doug Manmiller.

BOUNDLESS SERIES WORLD OF OUTLAWS LATE MODELS DRAW RECORD BREAKING CROWDS – HEAVY WEB SITE TRAFFIC AFTER RACE SHUTS DOWN TRACK WEB SITE

By Robert Walden BULLS GAP, Tenn. (March 31) – The World of Outlaws Late Model Series made its first-ever appearance Saturday, March 27 at Volunteer Speedway before a “standing room only” crowd – the largest in the history of the storied track. While Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine, Iowa became the seventh different driver through the series’ first seven events in 2004 to visit victory lane, history was also made following the WoO race when the Volunteer Web site at got shut down due to unusually high traffic on Monday.

Not only were the top names in dirt Late Model racing present competing with the Outlaws, with the NASCAR Cup and Busch events being held at nearby Bristol Motor Speedway, Bill Elliott was also in attendance at “The Gap” wheeling his dirt Late Model around the high banks. “Awesome Bill” failed to advance into the 60-lap feature after getting collected in a first-lap, multi-car crash in a last chance consolation race. However, that was not the only crash he was a part of!

While the Outlaws event at Volunteer was without a doubt the biggest show ever, the appearance of Elliott racing on dirt made news worldwide thanks to the Jayski.com Web site and its millions of viewers. With the WoO race story and results and racing action photos on the main page of the Volunteer site showing the crash and Elliott’s No. 9 Dodge Intrepid, those who visited the Jayski site saw the following.

Elliott Dirt Tracking: Bill Elliott raced on dirt Saturday night at Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap, TN. He qualified 33rd-fastest, but failed to qualify for the evening's feature race after crashing during his heat. A pic and more news on the race at (3-29-2004)    That’s all it took! Once that was posted on Jayski, it didn’t take long before the Volunteer site was shut down due to the huge numbers who clicked on the Volunteer link.

“It’s really something else, our Web site getting shut down,” said track public relations director Robert Walden. “Once I finished typing the race story and results and posting several photos on the site around 6 a.m. on Sunday, I never dreamed our site would get overwhelmed with the tremendous amount of traffic we received. And it’s still shut down! There are a couple photos which show Bill Elliott. One while the wreck was happening, and one with him standing by his crashed car assessing the damage. I usually look on Jayski.com daily to check out the latest racing news myself, and with all the NASCAR-type fans the site attracts, I’m sure when they saw where Elliott raced on dirt with the World of Outlaws they wanted to see photos.

“ZFx Inc. in Kingsport is our site host, and the way I understand it is our Volunteer site was getting 1,000 hits per second. It was set up to be able to handle at least 100,000 people on the site at one time, and once it reached more than that it shut down. Who would’ve ever thought a dirt track’s Web site would get those kind of numbers? They (ZFx) said they’d never seen anything like it, and basically there’s nothing that can be done about it. Hopefully we’ll get our site back up sometime today.” With  the WoO show and the Duayne Hommel Benefit race officially in the books as the most successful weekend in the history of Volunteer Speedway, fans are already talking about the next appearance by the Outlaws at the track in August.

“Oh yeah, everyone we talked with at the track told us they can’t  wait until our August mid-week WoO events,” said track general manager Doug Gillenwater. “Looking at the packed grandstand, infield pit and backside pit and tier-parking this past Saturday night was unreal. We had a tremendous crowd. Even though it might have been a tight squeeze (standing room only) getting everyone in, we managed to somehow accommodate all who walked up to the ticket booth wanting in. We were parking cars down in the grass fields behind our entrance sign at the road and in other locations on track property where we’d never had to before.”

For more information contact Volunteer Speedway at (423) 235-5020, or at once the site gets back up.
