Emma’s Driver Spotlight Of The Week:  David Hill

August 4,2003

The driver profile for this week is David Hill, from Trappe MD. David is a Late Model driver at the Delaware International Speedway (DIS). David has been married to Carla, for eighteen years. David and Carla have 2 children, their daughter Lyndsey, and a son named Derrike. David works for Hill's Electric Motors Service.

Larry Hill, David’s father started the racing scene in 1974 -1975, with Bobby Walls Jr., driving a 6 cylinder sportsman for him. They would race at the old track in Delmar and Georgetown, DE. Then in 1976, 1977, 1978, Larry drove the number seventy-five Late Model.

At the age of 11, David began to run Go-Karts for about four years at the Wares Track. Then at the age of fifteen, David drove the Mini-Stock at the Delmar track DIS. At the age of sixteen David started driving the Late Model number seventy-five and has never looked back every since then. David has 118 wins at DIS, 30 wins at the Georgetown Speedway. A total of nine wins at the Potomac Speedway and at Hagerstown Speedway he has one. He won Championships at Georgetown in 1980, then in 1985, 1989, 1990, 2001, and 2002 he won the championships at the Delaware International Speedway. He had some other major wins which he is very proud of, the 1986 Delaware State Champ Show, in 1997 The Delaware State Champ Show, the Ronnie McBee Memorial Race, and Mike Clore Race. David also has won two of the William Cathell Memorial Race at DIS, and the Diamond State 100. In 1990, David was the most winnings Late model driver in the Northeast with 23 wins. David’s crew is his Father, Larry, Bobby Willey, Robert Sellers, David Adkins, Wynn Bowman, and Daniel.

David always has the time for the kids, and I have noticed that he is someone the kids at the track look up to. When David wins, they all like to be in the winner circle with him to get in the winners picture. Keep up the Good Work David.

Next Week I will be looking for a Modified Driver to get the scoop on. Thanks to all our drivers who give us a great show and we are proud of you all.

Driver Of The Week Spotlight:  Robert Massey

My driver spotlight of the week was Rob Massey of Ellendale, Delaware.  I first did a interview with Rob doing the Motorsports Mania show at the Centre of Salisbury in February.   Somehow I lost my notes, so I had told Rob I was going to have to redo his interview the first change I got.

Robert, for the last five years has been driving in the Street Modified class.  I asked how he got his start in racing and he said, " just decided I wanted to race and I was thirty-four years old when I started racing."  But this year he has switched over to a Late Model, so this will be his sixth year in racing.  He has a Laser Chassis with a Martin .415 motor and still spots the number six-X.

Rob likes to run at the Delaware International Speedway, and has run at the Delaware State Fair, in Harrington, DE.  I liked that track there was some great racing there years ago.  But anymore it is not a safe track to run in today's world.  Rob said he ran in the top five there.

Now he would like to get comfortable in this new car and class, along with the difference feel in the track and win some races.  So far Rob has been running pretty good in this class and improved each week.  He got his first top five May 22, 2004.  Later on down the road he would like to travel some.

Rob's crew is Charlie Munford, Randy Hoyer, Artie and Julia.  With a special thanks to his sponsors who are Action Marine, Mateo Tolls, Beandx Custom Graphic, Bernheisel Race Cars for all their help and support.

So I think this will be another racer to keep our eyes on.  We wish him a lot of good luck. Keep your eye open, I will looking for some more drivers to talk to.  So good luck to you Rob and I hope you get that win.  Just be careful and safe.

Driver Of The Week Spotlight:  Richard Jarvis Jr.

This is on a son that his Father was a Modified Driver in the late 70 and 80's.  His name was Richard Jarvis Sr., and his Modified was the number 680 and what a show he put on when he drove at the Georgetown Speedway in Georgetown, DE, and I believe also at U. S. 13 Speedway in Delmar, DE.

Now his son Richard Jarvis Jr., is racing.  Jr. has tried the NASCAR North Busch racing, but it is a really expensive in so much as he decided to come home and run our local track in DE.  He has raced at Georgetown, DE Speedway, the Delaware International Speedway, Richmond Speedway, Memphis Speedway, and Dover Speedway.

Richard Jr., told me that he started racing at age eleven in go-karts and has three championship and as many as 60 wins in the go-Karts.  He also has drove a modified Lite, a Big Block Modified,  and an asphalt Late Model,.  He is carrying the number 47 on his Late Model his year.  His crew is Bobby Leath and the owner, John Burton, Doug, Kevin, and Walt.

His goal is to win some races and have fun racing.  He likes his track tacky because that makes it faster and better for grip.  He likes running at the Delmar track because it a nice track and close to home.  His most important win he said is all of them.

His sponsors are Leath Heating and Air Conditioning, Leath Realty, Beauchamp Construction, Hebrew Cont. Insulation.  The make of his car is A Monte Carlo, the chassis is a Laser, and the motor is a .415 cu. in.  We wish him well in his racing if you get a chance go down to the pits and meet this young man and wish him well.
