Just My Opinion   by Jim Young  11/27/2004

The Season ‘Tis  Over!

Here it is, the middle of November, I just turned another year older and racing season is officially over next week. What Will I Do? How will I fill my need for speed over the winter months?

Except for the west coast, most racing series have completed their seasons. Television coverage will now dwindle down to a minimum. Man, It’s a good thing we have our racing trade papers and magazines for all the latest gossip, right?

Well, we do have other choices to make. We can hop in the car and find an indoor go kart track somewhere, or we can head on over to the local hobby shop and race the slot cars. We can go to the Motorsports trade shows, or we can head over to our favorite drivers race shop and see what he’s building for next season.

Or, we can stay right in the house until February when we can board a plane and head to Florida for Speedweeks. Or, we can just plain sit at home until the weather breaks and our local tracks open up. If you do decide to stay home, here’s a few things you can do to relieve the pressure of having little or no racing.

You can replay all the video tapes you own and when you’re done you can always find Days of Thunder or that horrible Stallone movie (Driven) on TV somewhere. You can break out your Dirt Track Racing or PlayStation racing games or you can sit down behind the keyboard of your computer and surf the web until saltwater flows out of your eyeballs.

While you’re on the internet, you can hit the message boards and read the ridiculous rumors started by those who have nothing to do with anything. You can even start your own rumor and lose your favorite driver his ride for next year. You can move drivers and crew chiefs from one team to another. You can move drivers from one track to another. You can argue with the local tech inspector online. The possibilities are endless.  Unless you only read the boards like I do . . . . .

There are more constructive and fun things to do on the internet. There are many excellent websites to visit. When you get to a really good site and you’re finished browsing, go to their links page before you back out. You will find yourself going from one links page to another to another. All of a sudden you’ll find a new series or type of race car to explore. You’ll find racing cars from all over the world. You’ll find drivers that you haven’t heard from in years. You can explore the progression of racing from day 1 until the present. You can find anything by just typing it in a search engine. From how the wheel was made round to setting up a Penske Shock,  It’s all there at your fingertips.  Mind you, you might want to freshen up the computers power plant, anti virus and software before starting.

Before you know it, it will be February, Daytona will be running, Lincoln and Williams Grove will clear the snow off the track and the seats and we can feed our need for speed at our area speedways once again  . . . . . . .

It is also the time of year that I would like to thank all those who let me invade their websites with my column and photos this past year. I truly hope you enjoyed them.  On that note I would like to wish everyone a very Happy, Safe and Joyous Holiday Season. May all your wishes come true!

Well, Gotta’ Run . . .  I’m installing a new silver plated beer holder on my computer stand!

              RACERS APPRECIATION PARTY

 By Bill Hess

Harrington, DE.....Last Saturday night nearly 60 people got together at Messick Community Center in Harrington, Delaware as Emma Downie hosted her 3rd annual Racers Appreciation Party for drivers and other racing friends.  It was a chance to get together to celebrate another successful racing season.

For three years Emma has reached into her own pocket to stage this event, giving local racing people an evening of bench racing, music, food, and an abundance of door prizes.

Drivers on hand included Bob Geiger, Garry Gollub, Clem Horvath, Jim Lindale, Steve Lindale, David Nailor, Jim Reed, Dave Schamp, Brian Seidel, Gary Simpson, Steve Stamps, Bobby Walls III, Michael White, and Ron Wilson.

Special thanks were given to Loriann Nailor (for all her help), Gene Beebe (Master of Ceremonies), Budweiser (for decorations and door prizes), all the drivers, and everyone else that contributed door prizes and food.

As the party was winding down Emma took the microphone and shocked the entire hall.  She announced to all that she is battling cancer and will not be seeking treatment.  She asked the stunned crowd, through teary eyes, to remember her in their prayers.  However, she vowed to be back for party number four next year.

Since the announcement Emma has said she will seek radiation treatment if necessary but not any chemo.  Emma and her last husband have been racing fans for many, many years; Emma still attends racing every Sat. night at Delmar.  She loves racing and just wants to show the drivers how much, this is one of her ways.

JD3Graphics: Your 2005 Design Headquarters

HAMILTON, NJ—Now in its fourth year, JD3Graphics of Hamilton, NJ has successfully established itself as one of the premier design companies in the motorsports industry. JD3Graphics is fully owned and operated by the Dugan family, whose perseverance has expanded the company from a part-time hobby into an all-inclusive graphics provider.

“Here at JD3Graphics, we always strive to provide our customers with the most unique designs. This year we are proud to be able to offer our customers artwork that not only can be applied to their racecars, but also to a number of new products—including t-shirts, autograph cards, and embroidery.” says Jay Dugan, proprietor.

These items will not only complement the customers' existing products, but will make several other options available in order to increase driver recognition, create a unified team identity, and develop a greater sense of professionalism among owners, drivers, and crews.

“We have also recently become a distributor for Awesome Racewear.  Their race suits and uniforms are available with many options and a variety of customizable designs.”  Awesome Racewear products are worn and recognized in virtually all types and levels of motorsports, from local go-kart divisions to national NASCAR touring circuits.

“What we feel sets us apart is our ability to show our customers renditions of their racecars, racesuits or other products before they buy them. That way, we can get our ideas closer to what was in the mind of our customer and take the guesswork out of the whole process.

“We want to provide a professional atmosphere for our customers and their race teams. By using unified designs on a number of products, their team automatically becomes more visible and more recognizable. Even better, the customer ends up saving time and money by getting all of their products in one place,” comments Dugan.

Further, JD3Graphics can extend the logo designs on the racecars to the sponsors themselves, providing the same integrated design concept for the commercial consumer—including: logos, business cards, letterheads, signs, brochures, company vehicles, and websites.

With top race teams such as Lowe’s Dirt Track Winner Ricky Elliott with the Jake Marine Megateam #85, New Egypt Speedway Modified Champion Jimmy Horton with the Hewlett Motorsports #901, Delaware Int’l. Modified Champion Craig Mullins, as well as the M&M Motorsports #711 of Mike Iles, JD3Graphics is wrapping up a successful 2004 season and is looking forward to an even more successful 2005 season.

JUST MY OPINION  by Jim Young   11/2/04

CONGRATULATIONS !

This month’s column has but one purpose and one purpose only. To congratulate those who have given that little something extra to our sport during the 2004 season. While I know I cannot acknowledge everyone in this one column, I will acknowledge those who have had a direct impact on our immediate area.

First, I have to acknowledge my friend Fast Freddy Rahmer on an incredible year. 34 Wins, Track Championships at Lincoln, Susquehanna, and Williams Grove, 410 Sprint Series Champion at Selinsgrove Speedway, 2004 Thunder on the Hill and Pa. Speedweek Champion.

Wow! What a year!

Next I’ll go to The Man From Mifflintown, Keith Kauffman for picking up his 120th feature win at Port Royal. Brett Hearn continues to impress by sweeping Eastern States Weekend. Doug Hoffman still shows his driving prowess by winning the NASCAR Regional Championship and some Big Bucks!

How about Ryan Godown taking the Superstars of Stock Car Racing Title at New Egypt. Who would’ve thought?  Duane Howard steals the Bridgeport Points Championship from Ricky Elliott on the last point night. Jeff Strunk had a great year both at Grandview and on the Dirt Southeast Tour.

Northampton, Pa’s Tony Hirschman winning his 4th Nascar Asphalt Modified Title. Quite an accomplishment!  Mr.Sprint Car Steve Kinser wins his 19th World of Outlaws Championship & Scott Bloomquist still shines as the WOO Late Model Champ.

Although DIRT has many track champions, a few stand out. Dave Lape winning his 7th title at Fonda. Tim Fuller’s great year at Fulton in Bob Faust’s M1 and their big SDW Victory.  Gary Tomkins track titles at both Brewerton and Rolling Wheels plus his Mr. Dirt Title made his switch to the Beachy Team the smartest seat change of 2004.

Now  I could go on and on, but there are some who need mentioning even though they did not have stellar years. But they did show their perseverance by getting back on the horse so to speak.

Todd Hestor ran well at the end of the season after a bad crash early on. Rick Laubach had two on track and one off track wrecks that would have made most racers quit the sport. Rick pushed on and finally landed a good ride for the 2005 season. Ryan Kerr’s determination after his Bridgeport accident shows what true racers are made of.

And last but not least I have to acknowledge Erin Crocker. This girl is the real deal. She’s smart and she can sure drive a sprint car. Congratulations Erin, on being the first woman to win a World of Outlaws A Main. Great Job!

Although we have only mentioned a few in this column, there were many other great efforts put forth by drivers across the USA. I along with Race Fans everywhere salute all of you. You have made our 2004 season one to remember. I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait for 2005!

BRAZILIAN FORMULA THREE CHAMPION TO MAKE

WORLD OF OUTLAWS SPRINT SERIES DEBUT

NORMAN, OK, November 1, 2004 / Business Wire / Boundless Motor Sports Racing Inc., (OTCBB: BMSR) (Boundless) d/b/a DIRT Motorsports Inc., announced that former Formula Three star, Brazilian Ricardo “Matchbox” Maurício will make his World of Outlaws (WoO) Sprint Series debut at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Las Vegas, NV during the Series’ final season event on November 5th and 6th, 2004.  Maurício will drive a car owned by sprint car racer Doug Lippincott of Sparks, NV.  Veteran World of Outlaws crew chief Davey Whitworth will help the road-racing star make the transition from pavement to dirt, with ButlerBuilt Motorsports Equipment also lending support to the team.

Maurício hails from Brazil but hopes to race full-time in the United States. His decision to venture to the United States to join the World of Outlaws Sprint Series came after a conversation with former office teammates of retired Formula One star Nelson Piquet including Bobby Hartslief, Boundless Chief Operating Officer.

“I wanted to focus my career in the U.S. and the best available entrance gate for someone that has stock car racing in mind, I believe, is sprint car racing,” said Maurício. “I am excited to try dirt oval racing and at the same time ready to learn the tricks of the trade with these fast and experienced drivers. I hope to squeeze in, use some of my road course past and find a place here for many, many years.”

“I was very pleased when Ricardo expressed an interest in racing with the World of Outlaws Sprint Series,” said Hartslief.  “I think Ricardo will be a fantastic addition to our line-up at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and a wonderful opportunity for fans at home and abroad to see how a Formula Three star competes among the elite of our Mean 15.  It should make for a very exciting weekend of racing.”

The nickname “Matchbox” originates from a combination of Maurício’s diminutive stature, he stands only 5’3”, and his reputation for having a “hot foot.”  The hard-charging style has worked well for the 25-year old native of São Paulo, Brazil.  In 2003, he won the Spanish Formula 3 Championship, claiming six wins and four pole positions in his Racing Engineering Toyota-Dallara.  Maurício also won the Brazilian Formula Ford Championship in 1996.

“Welcoming a Brazilian Formula Three driver race to with the World of Outlaws is just part of our efforts to broaden the appeal of sprint car racing,” said Paul A. Kruger, Boundless Chairman and CEO.  “By attracting new international teams we have the potential to increase our audience abroad as well as cross-over to reach fans that follow other types of motorsports.”

Maurício is currently racing with the Brazilian V8 Stock Car Series and serves as an Instructor at the Roberto Marazii Driving School at the legendary Interlagos Circuit in São Paulo as well as the Porsche Advanced Driving School, in São Paulo.

JUST MY OPINION       by Jim Young     9/25/04

“THE ULTIMATE TRACTION CONTROL”

Once in awhile as I page through those ridiculous message boards, I see something that tweaks my interest. One such post happened a few months ago. It concerned that dreaded, debated issue called “Traction Control”.

Now TC can mean different things to different people. We overheard a fan at New Egypt say that Brett Hearn’s “Special” New Egypt chassis has the Traction Control built in from the factory!  “WOW!”

When I think of TC, I think of the many articles, photos and conversations I’ve had with drivers, car owners and builders throughout the years concerning TC.

One of the first units I remember seeing was by John Gregory from Nazareth, Pa. John used wheel speed sensors that through a small electronic box eased the throttle back when it sensed wheel spin. If I remember correctly, I think John told me that CART threw him out of the pits and told him to never come back.

There are many other options available to any racer who wants to lay out his cash. Units can be found running through MSD boxes, hidden in roll cages, in fuel tanks, in rears, under intake manifolds etc. Some have wires,  Some are wireless. It all depends how much you want to spend and how smart your local Tech Inspector is.

As far as the cars on the track today, have I seen TC? I believe so, (But I could be wrong!)  At Big Diamond I’ve seen engines that scream down the straights and absolutely just flatten out when they run through the corners. Not an engine miss, but a flat sound like the Ignition timing was being retarded. (But then again, maybe it’s all my imagination.)

Now, I’ve been around a long time, and I’ve built a few engines in my day. I do not profess to be a genius, but I know when the sound of an engine changes….. (Or do I?)

This subject needs to be addressed at all speedways across the US of A. If it’s at little old Big Diamond, It’s everywhere.

Here’s what we should do. Give a quick crash course to every tech inspector at every racetrack this week. By next week they should be able to find all the units buried in the roll cages, tanks and intakes. Then by the week after they should be able to find the ones that are located in the rears and transmissions. Hopefully after these three weeks go by they can concentrate on the ones that are implanted in the right foot of every fast, winning race driver in America.

Then we’ll see who the cheaters really are. All the drivers who run away with their features the following week will be required to have a brain scan done in the EMS wagon prior to the start of any race they enter. No illegal devices will be tolerated there! Any driver found in violation will be subject to a lobotomy.

So, in about 5 weeks there should be no more TC to contend with. Low buck drivers will start winning races. Back markers will be getting all the good rides throughout the country. Maybe the great drivers weren’t so great after all ???

The point is, if you need Traction Control to win, we feel sorry for you. Sorry because you are embarrassing yourself and the entire racing community. The best Traction Control you can find is between your left ear and your right.  Oh yea, I almost forgot . . .  It is connected to your right foot . . . . . . . . . and its wireless !

But, That’s ” Just My Opinion!”
