Delaware Young Guns Hit Hard In All Features

May 23, 2005

Delmar, DE…..The racing season is just getting well into a little more than a month of racing at the Delaware Motorsports Complex located in Delmar, DE. This past Saturday night the Delaware young guns ran strong to capture a win in all five features. Each weekend has not been a let down with action in each division every night.

Just last Saturday night each feature won, was by one of the young guns at the Delaware International Speedway in each class. Most of these winners were in their early 20’s and an early career in the class that they run. Beau Wilkins of Milford, DE, runs in the big block modified class and collected his 3rd career win, but first for 2005. Wilkins has begun to follow in his legendary Fathers steps, with big shoes to fill to match Bobby Wilkins career, but off to begin the quest and doing well.

Beau’s in his second year running full time and really has just gotten started the last 2 seasons. This win was special for the team as it was Wilkins 1st time to win as a car owner, in the Mispillion Development Group, Coastal Marine, Penske Shocks, Dirt Wheels Modified number 9. This team was not sure if they would even have a car to get ready on their own support, but managed to pull it off so far.

In Late Model action, “Rapid” Richard Jarvis, Jr., of Ocean City, MD, in the Rose Engine, Bo-Laws carb, Berheisel, Leath Realty & Heating and Air, Gumboro Store, Surefire Protection, Frink Elec., and Beauchamp Bros. Construction number 47, won his 2nd career win in Late Model action. Jarvis picked up his 1st win on April and topped it tonight with win number 2. Jarvis got started racing at a early age and raced big block Modifieds at 16 years old, before he took a tour on asphalt before returning to DIS in a late model. This is Jarvis’s second year in the late model.

The second year of the AC Delco TSS Modified has really been getting a lot of attention. Each week there have been a count of 22-26 cars, and had 32 different drivers so far. This class was introduced last season with a GM sealed crate motor, and was a hit on the start. It’s intended to be a form of economical racing as well as a stepping stone into the big block modified class or a way to drive with a little more insurance your engine will last. The cars have to be tech each week by track officials before the night of events. The drivers all love the class and the way the cars handle. Car line-ups determined by times among the drivers in the timed trial qualifying laps and they have been very close among the drivers. Such as this past week the top 5 times were:

bullet Jack Mullins, Jr. set the top speed with 21.782 seconds and 82.637 MPH

bullet Brad Trice 21.891 seconds, and 82.226 MPH

bullet Tom Curtis 21.996 seconds and 81.833 MPH

bullet Tom Evans 21.998 seconds and 81.826 MPH

bullet Billy Carr 22.054 seconds and 81.618 MPH

This past weeks winner claimed win number 3 for 2005 in the sponsored Skipjack’s Restaurant, and Bi-Rite Auto Sales number 1 of Jack Mullins, Jr. Mullins started in this class last year after not driving any other class before hand. Last year Mullins claimed 4 wins and has gotten to a great start this year.

In the Street Modified last Saturday night Jason Cahall, of Cordova, MD, battled the entire race with Steve Bunting with some great side by side racing all 15 laps. This was Cahall’s first win for this season. Cahall, like the others young guns has not been driving in this class that long. Cahall was a former go-kart driver.

The Modified Lite probably had the only race driver that has maybe had just a little bit more seat time then the other champs of the night. Ryan Walls drove a brand new car that had just been finished on Saturday. Walls powers the DLC Pro Lightening, Extreme Motorsports Motor, sponsored M & M Heating, NOLAND, North East Pro Fab numbered 14W.

More track action since the opening night was when the URC Sprints visited on May 14. Veteran Kramer Williamson took that win in the “pink panther” numbered 73 to be the first winner in Taylor & Messick Delaware State Sprint Car Point Series. The URC Sprints return June 4, and June 25.

The May 26, 100 lap Advance Auto Part North Vs. South DIRT event has been canceled. After surveying the regular drivers, track Promoter, Cathell learned that about a dozen of the drivers were willing to buy the mandatory Hoosier tires to run even though DIS runs on American Racing Tires as their track tire. Other driver concerns about the event were other technical issues of tightened rules of DIRT, such as body modifications, fuel, tires, and engine size. The event was a mutual agreement with DIRT Motorsports COO, Bobby Hartslief. In order to be fair to all it was decided to cancel at this time. No word about a rescheduled date yet.

The action at the speedway has been non stopped each weekend.

The Camp Barnes benefit will still be on for June 29, and the World of Outlaws Late Model Series will be at the track on July 6. Tickets are on sale at the track office for General Admission is $26.00, Reserve is $30.00 and the Pits are $35.00. Contact the tracks office for any questions at 302.875.1911.

As of this writing David Tucker leads in points in Super, Frank Parks in Heavy, James Farmer in Pro-Bike, Josh Nichols in Street Eliminator, and in Junior I & II Jordan Dill and Paige Townsend lead.
