Delmar, DEÖ..Happy Racin Holidays! Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and as well, another year has just about past. Last month we went over the speedwayís second year with the new format from day racing to night racing for the Delaware State Dirt Track Championship activities on Friday night & Saturday over Saturday & Sunday. This is the last event held every year at Delaware International Speedway on the Delaware Motorsports Complex in Delmar, DE.
The US 13 Dragway & Speedway will have the awards banquet Jan. 6 & 7, 2012 at the Dover Convention Center & Casino. Banquet tickets & info can be found on the tracks web at www.delawareracing.com or call the tracks office M-F, 9-4 PM at 302-875-1911. They are now available $37.50 for adults & $18.75 for children 13 and under. Be sure to like us on Facebook and follow us on twitter too.
We have 6 more support divisions left to discuss and those winners. We have both of the crate classes, mod lites, vintage, slide for five and for the first time the Delmarva chargers.
Saturday, Oct. 22 events went like this after warm ups for qualified and non- qualified racers as we went right into the features.
The AC Delco Modifieds 25 lap feature where Jordan Watson 1J, of Milford DE, won his first Champ Show in the # 1J, ReMax Realty Twin Counties modified. Watson earned $1870 total for his win including the $570 in lap money and $1500 in feature winnings. The fastest time turned during the feature was set by Watson with 21.423 sec. & 84.022 MPH in lap 6. The top 5 drivers were Watson, rookie Trent Wiley 17, Joseph Tracy 37, Matt Hawkins 38, and John Curtis 17 who was the Delmar Track Champion this year. The feature started with 24 cars out of 25 spots available. Heats were won by Jordan, Trent Willey 17T, and Scott Hitchens 15. The non-support classes donít run qualifying heats during the season, they run by qualifying times. These divisions normally only run 15 laps during the regular Sat. night racing instead of 25.
The Crate Model (Late) division was won by Nick Davis 92, of Millsboro, DE and his first Delaware State Dirt Track Championship win. Davis ran a limited schedule in 2011, but he managed to claim a win in Sept. His fastest lap during the 25 lap was a 21.466 sec. and 83.854 MPH in lap 11. Davis collected a total $1865 monies; $1500 for the win, $340 in laps and $25 for supporting The Breast Cancer Awareness with a pink ribbon displayed on the car given by Blondie. The rest of the top 5 were Clint Chalabala 24, Mike Wharton 100, Dylan Evans 80 and David Nailor 9. (It was one of Nailorís best finishes in the crate model.). The heats were won by Davis, Wharton 100 and John Imler 63. Davis also had the fastest time of all 3 heats with 21.502 se. and 84.854 MPH in lap 4. There were 28 cars in attendance for the 30 places to take.
The Modified Lite Delaware State Dirt Track Championship winner was by young Jimmy Wills 22W of Felton, DE. He ran a flawless 20 lap event and took home $1240; $1000 for the win and $240 in lap money. Wills drove the fastest lap of 22.681 sec. and 79.362 MPH in lap 19. The remaining top 5 were Brandon Dennis 10 (Dennis won the regular Sat. night track championship), Landis Musser 5, Tim White 16 and Jason Musser 52. Total of 21 cars qualified for the 26 positions.
The Delmarva Chargers ran for the first time in the Delaware State Dirt Track Championship and the first year to run at the track. The Little Lincoln, Vintage, Delmarva Chargers and the Slide-or-five divisions will usually run once a month during the season. Most of these classes run their own points system to claim a championship, not the tracks point thatís earned by the 5 regular weekly divisions.
The Chargersí also run with trucks, too. The cars are 4 cyl, very economical, but I donít know enough about this class, yet, Iím learning though. They have a web also at www.delmarvachargers.webs.com. I will say the cars were a big hit at the track with 14 cars for the first race in May, to end this yearís season ending up with 28 cars for the champ show.
The feature was 10 laps and Kyle Tubbs 60 who claimed the first Delaware State Dirt Track Championship win in addition to the win he had from July. The first truck to win DSDTC was by Guy Mitchell 3.
Oscar Fields 21, wins in the Southern Delaware Vintage Club Feature in his Modified Stock Car and Mitch Morton 777, wins in the Sportsman division. This club has really been getting stronger along with the car count growing too. Overall, there were 24 cars to run the 10 lap feature. The club has a web with information on the club and requirements at www.southerndelawarevintage.com, plus on Facebook.
The last class was the Slide-4-five and it was won by Ronnie Layton 85.
So the new format continued to be a success and I imagine it will continue to be. Itís a lot of cars racing in the 2 day show. If you missed it, look to come during the 2012 season to any of the Saturday nights of racing. You will enjoy it, the drivers really put on good shows in every division.
The US 13 Kart Club Track located on the complex grounds, will have their banquet on February 4, 2012 at the Salisbury Elks Lodge, Salisbury, MD. Visit the web for more details at www.dekarting.net.
