The Last Race Of The Year Made A Tight Points Battle For The Little Lincoln Vintage Stock Car Club

October 31, 2010

By Bonnie Nibblett

Delmar, DE…..The last race of the season for the Little Lincoln Vintage Stock Car Club was held on Saturday, October 22, 2010 at the Delaware International Speedway.  The final race was held during the two day Delaware State Dirt Track Championship event at the speedway.

This was the last chance for any of the top drivers to claim the top score in points on the ½ mile clay oval for the club.  This year the points were just digits away for any of the top four drivers to claim the Championship Title.

The final points have been set and the 2010 Champion goes to Mel Joseph, Jr., son of the Mel Joseph who contributed many affairs in our local racing areas.  The championship title is the first for Mel Joseph, Jr. since running in the club.  The car is owned by Greg Mitchell of Mitchell’s Auto & Truck Salvage, of Laurel, DE.

Before the last race was held on Oct. 22, the points were still in the air.  Joseph lead with 932 points, just 4 pts over Bill Brittingham who had 928.  Then 2 pts difference between Bryan Brasure 926 pts and Jamie Wagner with 924 pts.; just a mere 10 pts between the top four.

With the final race looming it could have been any of the top four to take the crown.  Those top four drivers consistently finished in the top five at almost every event.  It could have been any of the other drivers of the club as well but these four stayed on top all season.

When the final race ended and all the cars were tech okay and once again just few a numbers between the drivers divided in the end.   Joseph finished 3rd in the feature which earned 96 pts to give him a total of 1028 pts to take the top spot in points.  Joseph took a total of three wins this season.

Brasure won the last feature to add 100 pts to his 926 pts to take 2nd in points with 1026 final points.  Brasure had his best year ever and it was the first time he ran a whole schedule of the club races of his 3 years of racing and claimed 2 wins in the end.  Brasure said he really liked the class and has learned the set ups well.  But he’s still learning and always trying to help a few other drivers learn.  Just Brasure and his son work on the car.

Then Brittingham and Wagner come into play.  These two drivers always put on fun racing action to watch.

Brittingham only had 1 win all year, far from his usual year.  But he stayed consistent in the top 5 in the features all season.  Brittingham has six champion titles 2000, 2001, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, already, far from any of the club drivers as well. He runs a clean race at every event and uses patience to rise to the front.  All the drivers race well and put on a tremendous race.  At the start of the last feature he had 928 pts, just 4 pts. under the leader.  Britt finished 4th in the feature to earn 94 pts and it totaled to 1022 pts, a third place spot in points.

Wagner’s a great competitor and has had 4 wins for this year.  Coming from the rear of the field to go to the front and even win.  Wagner also had 4 features that he finished out of the top 5 hurting his point’s total.  On the last race he finished 2nd to add 98 pts to the total of 924 pts.  The final total for Wagner placed him tied 3rd with Britt to earn 1022 total points.  Wagner has been chasing the champion title for years and comes so close too, but in the end he just misses it again.

The Little Lincoln Vintage Stock Cars are a unique division of racers.  For several years now, the division has attracted a solid field of cars and the competition is top notch.  These guys are committed to racing just like any other racing class.

The name for the division came about when a group of racers decided to make an up-to-date replica of this style of cars which ran back in the 1960’s and early 70’s.  The Little Lincoln Speedway, Lincoln, DE was a quarter mile dirt track located just south of Milford, DE, near the town Lincoln, DE.

There was a famous, liked, larger 4/10 track already in Abbotstown, PA, the Lincoln Speedway.  Since the track in Delaware track was smaller than the historic Lincoln Speedway it was named Little Lincoln; hence the name Little Lincoln Speedway.

The cars that ran from the start were mainly mid - 1950’s, Chevy’s and Ford’s that competed in two classes know as the V-8’s and the 6-cylinders’.

The Little Lincoln Vintage Stock Car Club was formed in 1996.  Each year the club has run at least 8-10 events at the Delaware International Speedway since the club was established.  The historic Georgetown Speedway, Georgetown, DE reopened briefly in 1996 and the club ran 5-6 races.  The speedway originally closed in early 1970’s.  When the track reopened in 2006 a few races were scheduled again and then closed again for a year or so.  Currently Jay James owner Bridgeport Speedway has been running a very limited schedule and the club occasionally runs there, although the club did not race any races in the 2010 season.  But, the new 2011 schedule has not been set yet.

The club will be having the Banquet Awards in January.  For more information on the club visit the web site at www.littlelincolns.com.  The club also has a message board on www.Redbud69racing.com Message Board under Little Lincoln Vintage Stock Car Club.  See you at the track!
