DECEMBER 4, 2011 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DEESE REPEATS AS LATE MODEL CHAMPION FOR EIGHTH TIME; WEAVER, FITZSIMMONS AND
THOMAS ALSO REWARDED
By BOB VORES
HAGERSTOWN, MD -- Hagerstown Speedway has officially ended its 64th season with
two new faces and two familiar ones that achieved championship title status.
Topping the late model field for the eighth time in his career was Roy Deese Jr.
of Laurel, Md., a number that now ties Nathan Durboraw. The most dominant driver
the past 13 years, Deese went atop the standings after the second event and held
the number one spot until the end when he won the title by seven points over
Kyle Lear.
“This feels pretty good,” Deese said. “It was a lot of hard work.”
With four rain outs of the twelve point races, Deese had five top fives and
seven top tens while having six top fives and ten top tens in the 14 overall
events in which he competed. He lacked a win but strived on consistency.
After last season’s success, Pete Weaver of nearby Williamsport, came back to
secure his second consecutive title in the Hoosier Tire Mid Atlantic late model
sportsman. Weaver rose to the top in mid May and had the edge at season’s end by
87 points over Cody Lear.
In the Ernie D’s pure stocks, Drew Fitzsimmons of Boonsboro, Md. was able to put
himself on top the standings by mid July and record his first ever championship
title.
Formerly the enduro dash cars, the hobby stock cruisers had their inaugural
season and it was Krazy Kenny Thomas of Keedysville, Md. taking the final honors
over Kenny Thomas (no relation) after securing four consecutive wins in the five
events held.
Deese’s efforts are always focused on being competitive and putting on a good
show for the fans and there’s no question that happened again. In the past four
seasons alone, the late model title has not been decided until the final points
race and Deese’s name has been there every time.
A strong effort put forth by the Deese team to correct an ill handling race car
in the final points night, the McBee/Hays Championship double point event, when
Lear moved to within 27 points after Deese had a flat tire the previous week
with only two laps remaining.
“After the heat race, I figured we didn’t have a chance,” Deese said. “Joey
Pingleton threw everything at it after the heat race. He doesn’t give up. He
gave me 100% effort. We changed everything on the car but the driver and that
was even an option. We’re here to race and race the last lap.”
Lear, Jim Bernheisel and Duane Harbaugh each actually had a shot at the title.
On the opening lap, all three contenders were involved in a multi-car incident
with Deese, who started 17th following the poor heat race finish, able to avoid
the melee.
“When I saw that, I’m thinking, ‘Man, I barely missed it,’” Deese said. “I knew
Jim had been good, Kyle had been good and they’d be back racing me. I don’t wish
bad luck on anyone but I thought we had a chance. We still had to race for it.
One more position and Kyle would have been the champion.”
Lear pitted for a tire and charged to the front after restarting on the tail. He
passed Deese for fifth on the 15th lap and sped on to finish second while Deese
ended fourth, making a seven point spread.
“Everyone had the same goal that night. There was a lot of drama. I think anyone
in the top four could have won it under the right circumstances. It feels good
to have won the title again as I certainly didn’t expect to after that heat
race. We were horrible.”
Lear, who received Rookie of the Year honors, recorded his career first late
model win and had five top fives and seven top tens in the eight point races and
seven top fives and ten top tens in the overall 14 events.
Bernheisel ended 43 points behind while defending champion, Frankie Plessinger
was only another eight behind. Alan Sagi ended fifth, another 59 back.
There were 12 different winners with only Jason Covert (3) and Josh Richards (2)
being repeat winners, Covert taking two of the three Three State Flyers events
with Richards the other plus the Octoberfest. Jeremy Miller, Gary Stuhler,
Plessinger and Ronnie DeHaven Jr. were single winners while Jerry Bard, Ashley
Barrett and Rusty Sites scored their career first late model triumphs. Jimmy
Mars and John Blankenship were also first time winners, Mars in the Appalachian
Speedweek event and Blankenship taking the Lucas Oil Series event.
Pete Weaver, whose career goes back 19 years along with countless hours involved
with his two sons quarter midget racing careers over a combined 17 years, won
his first late model sportsman title while at the same time, it was a double
Weaver success story as his young son, Justin, was in victory lane for the very
first time.
That didn’t happen this season, but Weaver did lock up his second career title
as he posted two wins including the Bowman Classic, five top fives and nine top
tens in the ten point races. Five events were lost to weather.
“I have to thank Doug and Dougie Timmons,” Weaver said about teaming with the
former Winchester promoter and son after the 2008 season. “Without them I
wouldn’t be here. Everyone helps and makes it a team effort. Justin pretty much
works on his car all by himself but also finds time to help me when I ask him.
Robbie Allen gives us the set ups. That’s where the secret been with us. We’ve
only been getting better.”
Cody Lear, who moved from the pure stocks, posted his career first win, the
Hoosier Daddy event, along with four top fives and six top tens. He ended 96
points back. Donnie Farlling trailed by another 45 to finish third with Terry
Flaherty and Mike Walls separated by 13 points to complete the top five.
There were nine winners in the 17 overall events with both Pete and Justin
Weaver along with Andy Fries scoring twice. Kenny Moreland, Farlling, and Chaz
Walls each scored career first wins while Trevor Feathers first win was the
Small Car Nationals. J. T. Spence was the Steel Block Bandits winner.
Drew Fitzsimmons’ title win was one of total consistency. He was close on many
occasions, one second and four thirds, but just lacked getting that first win.
He went on to post 10 top fives and 14 top tens in the 14 events for the pure
stocks. Six events were lost to weather.
“When we started this year, this wasn’t a goal of ours,” Fitzsimmons said. “We
were just trying to win some races. We weren’t even going to run the full season
but we kept getting closer and closer to the front and just kept coming back.
Here’s where we ended up.”
Kenny Dillon ended 53 points back with two wins including the Jim Cornett
Tribute along with seven top fives and 13 top tens. Steve Lowery posted four
early season wins along with nine top fives and 11 top tens. Billy Ecton Jr. and
Dave Stouffer Jr., with two wins, were separated by 36 points to finish fourth
and fifth.
Other winners included Eddie McClellan and Tony Catlett, with two including the
career first for both, a career first for Rick Stouffer and a single for Wayne
Hawbaker. Mike Corbin was the Small Car Nationals winner.
The hobby stock cruisers competed in five point events with two lost to the
weather while one was postponed to another date. After Kenny Thomas won the
opening event, Krazy Kenny Thomas was unstoppable from then on as he took the
next four successive wins while Gary Proctor was the winner in the non point
Small Car Nationals event.
Only five points separated the top two heading into the final event but when the
checkered waved, it was Krazy Kenny barely pulling off the win while Kenny
Thomas, who had the win plus three seconds, had his season worst finish in
eighth. The result was a 44 point difference.
“We’ve been up here 20 some years and we always wanted that trophy that says
“Champion” on it and we finally got it,” Thomas said. “I’m glad the race wasn’t
one lap longer. We popped a belt with two laps to go. I kept watching the
temperature gauge and coming out of four, it puked the water out of it and that
was all she had. She’s a good old car and got us to where we needed to go.”
The 410 sprints made two visits with Greg Hodnett taking honors in the
Pennsylvania Sprint Speedweek event while Daryn Pittman scored the Octoberfest
triumph a month ago.
Brett Hearn was victorious in both the big and small block modified events of
the Octoberfest.
Promoter Plessinger and the speedway staff wish everyone a safe and very Merry
Christmas and Happy New Year and look forward to everyone being able to rejoin
us in 2012. For all the up to date news, the 2012 schedule, driver information

HEARN DOUBLES IN OCTOBERFEST, RICHARDS AND PITTMAN SCORE FIRSTS
Hagerstown, Md.: Unlike its scheduled weekend ending with the Trick or Treat
snow job of two weeks ago, the postponed Hagerstown Speedway’s 24th Annual
Verizon Wireless Octoberfest ended with a more than seasonable weekend to
finalize the speedway’s season on Sunday.
Topping his season at 15 overall wins, Vernon, N.J’s Brett Hearn scored the
final two after opening the afternoon in a non-stop small block feature with a
flag to flag domination victory where he was more than seven seconds ahead at
the finish for his ninth overall Octoberfest win. Having won the last three
consecutive big block events, he came back later to record a nearly eleven
second triumph to give him ten overall victories in both small and big block
event features.
Starting ninth, Shinnston, WV’s Josh Richards took control of the late model
event on lap 15 and was nearly six seconds ahead when the checkered waved for
his first ever Octoberfest victory but his overall 14th of the season.
Daryn Pittman of Owasso, Ok took advantage of his pole position to lead all the
way in the sprint feature to score an Octoberfest win for the first time. It was
his overall 15th triumph of the season.
Hearn got the jump from the outside pole over Larry Wight and was to the rear of
the field by lap eight and began sticking lapped traffic between himself and
Wight while Jimmy Horton was further back in third. Rick Laubach grabbed third
from Horton on the 20th circuit
While Hearn continued to duck in and out of traffic, he had an over nine second
lead at the 30 lap mark with six lapped cars separating him and Wight. Still in
traffic in his advance, he got to the finish with a lead of 7.13 seconds over
Wight while Laubach maintained third. Matt Sheppard came from 21st to take
fourth from J. R. Heffner on the 33rd lap as the two finished in that order.
Willie Decker, Ryan Godown, Dale Planck, Alan Johnson and Craig Von Dohren
completed the top ten.
“That was a good car from the first lap,” Hearn said.”Sometimes when they start
off that good, they don’t finish that good. The track was a lot of fun. You
could run anywhere on it. I always have fun here, regardless.”
Saturday’s heat wins went to Wight, Hearn, Dalen Planck and Matt Dilorenzo with
Sheppard winning the consolation after having a flat tire in his heat.
With two time event winner, Jeremy Miller on the late model pole, Ronnie DeHaven
Jr. grabbed the top spot from the outside over him with Dave Zona, Kyle Lear and
Rick Eckert in tow. The caution waved on the second lap as four cars were
involved on a backstretch incident with Jason Miller unable to continue. The
next circuit, Lear and Eckert got together heading into the first turn as Lear
went around and into the first turn with Jason Covert also sliding into the
incident. Both were unable to continue.
DeHaven stretched his lead over Miller following the restart and was to the rear
of the field and more than four seconds ahead by the 12th lap while Richards and
Eckert were into the next spots.
Back to back restarts gave Richards the opportunity to grab second and when
DeHaven bobbled slightly in the fourth turn, Richards quickly sped past to lead
the 15th lap. Eckert followed into the runner up spot but DeHaven battled back
to retake the position four laps later.
Richards led while DeHaven trailed by just over two seconds for lap after lap
while Jamie Lathroum moved into third on the 21st lap and Dylan Yoder passed
Eckert for fourth the next lap. Richards was into the rear of the field again on
the 34th lap and began to stretch his lead by sticking lapped cars between
himself and DeHaven and enjoyed 5.81 seconds just before the yellow waved for
ninth running Marvin Winters who coasted to a stop.
Richards sped the final three laps to capture the win over DeHaven, Lathroum,
20th starting Booper Bare and Yoder. Dan Stone came from 23rd for sixth with
defending event winner Gary Stuhler from 17th, Kenny Pettyjohn (16th), Eckert
and Alan Sagi completing the top ten.
“I have to thank Ernie, Connie and Keya Davis for letting me drive this car and
Ernie for putting up the rest of the purse money for all the classes,” Richards
said. “That just shows how much he loves to race and supports the fans and the
track. Just to drive this care is awesome. We were a little soft on the left
rear tire. We just tried to stay smooth. This was a cool way to end the season.”
Miller, DeHaven, Zona and Lear were heat winners while Stone was the consolation
winner.
Larry Wight also led the big block from the pole to beat Sheppard into the first
turns but Hearn was quickly past him into the runner up spot by lap two. Hearn
was putting the pressure on Sheppard by the fifth lap and after a complete side
by side lap, Hearn came out on top on lap nine and began lapping rear cars.
Hearn kept getting better and better as Ryan Godown moved into third on the 19th
lap with a nearly six second lead erased on lap 26 with five lapped cars back to
Sheppard.
In the open, Hearn drove his own pace but he wasn’t leaving off as he was over
nine seconds ahead with ten to go and continued on until taking the checkered
10.91 seconds ahead of Godown who passed Sheppard in traffic on the final
circuit. J.R. Heffner was sixth followed by Craig Von Dohren, Brian Weaver, Alan
Johnson (17th) and Kevin Hirthler.
“When you’re racing Matt Sheppard, you don’t know what to expect, he’s as tough
as they come,” Hearn said. “When he gets out front first, it’s going to be a
tough pass. I saw him getting a little bit loose off the corners and we were
getting better and better. I just tried to get to the front. By the end of the
race, it was getting pretty hard with those lapped cars. Those last three or
four laps, I was waiting for a wreck. They were racing each other really hard
for the checkered. Once I knew I had enough room I just backed off that last lap
and gave myself a little bit of space.”
Wight, Sheppard, Hearn and Brian Weaver were the heat winners while Brian Berger
was the consolation winner.
The sprints completed their entire program on Sunday as the postponed date
interfered with the final race at Susquehanna as Daryn Pittman, Danny Dietrich
and Brent Marks began the afternoon by winning their heats and George Suprick
taking the consolation.
Pittman beat Dietrich off the line as defending event winner Cody Darrah quickly
grabbed third from his fifth starting spot. Pittman was into the rear by the
seventh lap while Darrah and Rahmer got past Dietrich by the tenth lap with
Rahmer passing Darrah before a 16th lap yellow.
Rahmer did a 360 degree spin following the restart but a premature yellow flag
gave him his spot back as Pittman didn’t have room for a misstep with Rahmer and
Dietrich close enough to strike. After Mark Smith took fourth from Darrah with
five to go, rear traffic came into play in the final laps as Pittman escaped any
attempt from Rahmer to take the top spot but Smith got past Dietrich on the
final lap while Darrah ended fifth. Curt Michael was sixth with Marks, Greg
Hodnett (14th), Robbie Stillwagon and Daryl Stimeling to complete the top ten.
“The lapped cars, some were pretty slow. It was kind of one lane and made it
tough no matter what speed they were going,” Pittman said. “We were glad we were
able to make the right moves. Really, about four or five to go there, I about
gave it away and was able to get around a couple lapped cars that were running
side by side. Our starting spot was important, but we still had to finish it, so
it was a great team effort and a good way to finish our year.”
A speedway management decision was announced prior to the features to reduce the
100 laps by half for the modified and late model features with sprints going 30
while lowering the purse for only the top few positions. Ernie Davis of Ernie
D’s Enterprises stepped up to pick up the additional purse which was a great
gesture on his part and drew applause from the competitors in the drivers
meeting.
Hagerstown’s season has concluded. The speedway would like to congratulate Roy
Deese Jr. on his eighth late model championship while Pete Weaver repeated his
title in the Hoosier Tire Mid Atlantic late model sportsman division. Drew
Fitzsimmons was the Ernie D’s pure stock winner and Krazy Kenny Thomas was the
champion in the inaugural season for the hobby stock cruisers.

HAGERSTOWN’S OCTOBERFEST FIELDS SET FOR SUNDAY
Hagerstown, Md: After a two week postponement, there was no Trick or Treat and
six inches of wet snow falling on Saturday’s qualifications for the 24th Annual

SNOW FORECAST POSTPONES HAGERSTOWN’S OCTOBERFEST
Hagerstown, MD: Postponed due to rain previously, Hagerstown Speedway’s
Octoberfest has never been postponed due to snow, but there’s always a first and
it’s happened to the 24th Annual Verizon Wireless Octoberfest 350 scheduled for
this weekend.
Surprisingly a winter storm warning was issued for the area which begins 2 am
Saturday morning and lasts until 10 pm Saturday evening with heavy wet snow and
latest accumulation showing six to twelve inches. The type of snow will create
slippery travel conditions and widespread power outages are possible as snow
weighs heavily on trees which still have most of their leaves.
The event has been postponed two week until November 12-13 under the same
schedule with the following exceptions:
Due to other scheduling, the 410 Sprints ONLY will run their qualifying events
and feature on Sunday. All other divisions will follow the same formats as
advertised and run their qualifying events Saturday and applicable features
Sunday. The Small Block Modified feature will be 75 laps in lieu of 100.
Continue to check back for any further other updates or possible changes on this
event which will be posted on the speedway’s website:
www.hagerstownspeedway.com
or contact the speedway office at 301-582-0640. Hagerstown Speedway is located
on U.S. Route 40 just 6 miles west of Hagerstown.

Hagerstown’s Octoberfest, Ready to Go
Hagerstown, MD: As area speedways have one by one presented their closing
events, just a few days remain until Hagerstown Speedway’s 24th Annual Verizon
Wireless Octoberfest 350 will wrap up its season.
Entries from numerous top drivers have arrived for the grand finale this
weekend, October 29th and 30th, which, after 23 years, has put the top four dirt
motorsports divisions all together for one big extravaganza.
Top drivers in late models, big block and small block modifieds and super
sprints will be vying for $10,000 awaiting winners in each of the main events
with $400 to start each feature.
It’s a busy weekend of racing with Saturday reserved for all qualifying heats
and B-Mains in the four divisions. Order of events will be big block modifieds,
late models, 410 sprints and end with small block modifieds.
Sunday’s order of events for the 100 lap features will be in reverse; small
blocks, 410 sprints (50 laps), late models and big blocks.
Gary Stuhler, who won the inaugural 1988 event, leads the late model win column,
having also scored four more times; 1996, 1999, 2003 and is the defending
winner.
Rick Eckert has three wins to his credit, 2001-02 and 2009.
Brett Hearn, the overall leading modified winner at Hagerstown, has scored the
small block portion twice, in 2000 and 2005, while is the defending big block
winner with previous wins in 1993, 1997, 2001 and has won the last three
consecutive events.
Billy Pauch has won in three different divisions. He’s claimed back to back
sprint wins in 1988 and 1989, a single small block win in 1999 and has four big
block modified triumphs in 1988, 1992, 1995 and 1996.
Tim McCreadie has won the last two small block modified events but has also won
the 2008 late model 100 lapper.
In the super sprints, World of Outlaw driver Cody Darrah, following a traffic
accident that sidelined him for the entire 2010 season, made his first trip back
on the track a winning one and is the defending winner.
Lance Dewease leads the sprint division with four wins in three different cars.
He’s scored in 1994 and 1997 and then put back to back wins together in 2001 and
2002. Dewease will be out of action this year from injuries suffered in a
Lincoln Speedway incident several weeks ago.
Three drivers have three wins; Donnie Kreitz Jr. having the honors in both 1991
and 1992 and then again in 1996 while Fred Rahmer in two different racers,
scored in 2004 with back to back wins in 2007-08 with Greg Hodnett having his
name on the 2003, 2005 and 2006 victories, each aboard different race cars.
General admission for Saturday is $30 and $35 for Sunday, while the best buy is

Trever Feathers Scores Career First Hagerstown Win in Small Car Nationals
Corbin, Whitt, Proctor and Jessmer also Score on Busy Weekend
HAGERSTOWN, MD: Winchester Va.’s Trever Feathers drove the race of his young
career as he was victorious in the 30-lap late model sportsman feature last
Saturday night during the running of the 5th annual small car nationals at the
Hagerstown Speedway. The win for Feathers, the 2010 limited late model champions
at the Winchester (VA) Speedway, was worth $2000.
Mike Walls and Matt Parks paced the field to the initial green flag of the
event. Walls got the jump at the start as he would lead the pack into turn one.
Walls would then appear to have the car to beat as he led the event for the
first 20-laps. Meanwhile, sixth-starting Trever Feathers, reached second by the
fourteenth lap and set his sights on leader Walls. Feathers would make what
would be the winning pass on lap-21 and then survive a late race rush from 11th
starting Scott Palmer to preserve the win.
“Man it’s awesome to win here.” Feathers stated. “We’ve been trying to get one
up here all season and I knew starting sixth we’d be pretty good, but I was a
little nervous because I’m tired of going backwards here.”
Tire management was the key to Feathers victory.
“It took a while for the left rear tire to come in, but once that happened I had
to take care of the right front because it’s hard on that tire when you try to
run the bottom and I knew I had to be there at the end.” Early leader Mike Walls
held on for third, Andy Fries was fourth and Andy Anderson completed the
top-five. In qualifying Saturday, Tyler Armstrong set fast time in time trials
over the 32-car field with a one-lap time of 19.574. Heat race wins went to
Armstrong, Fries, Anderson and Marvin Winters with Pete Weaver winning the
consolation.
In the 25-lap pure stock feature, 2011 Winchester Speedway pure stock champion,
Mike Corbin added his name to the Hagerstown win list with his first-ever win at
the speedway. Two-time Hagerstown pure stock winner Eddie McClellan grabbed the
top-spot as the first lap of the event was completed. Mike Corbin, who started
sixth, reached second by the fourth lap and would snare the race lead from
McClellan on lap-seven. From that point on, it would be a race for second, as
Corbin would lead the final eighteen laps to score the $2000 win. “I just look
down here and see all the good cars that are here and I can’t believe that we
finally won one up here.” Corbin said. “The guys did a great job on the car this
weekend, it was just about perfect.”
In a late race surge, 2011 Bedford Speedway street stock champion Bill Henney
came home second, Brian Duffy claimed third, Doug Hoffman was fourth and Mike
Franklin rounded out the top-five. During Saturday’s qualifications Mike Corbin
set fast time over the 40-car field with a one-lap time of 23.100. Heat race
wins went to Corbin, McClellan, Franklin and Rick Stouffer with Doug Bennett and
Dave Stouffer Jr. claiming twin consolations.
Tommy Whitt bested his runner-up performance from 2010 with his first-ever
Hagerstown win in the 15-lap four-cylinder feature. Whitt took the lead from
Hunter Crane on lap-six and then held off a determined Richard Gwizdale to post
the win.
“I wanted this one bad.” Whitt stated. “We finished second here last season, and
it feels really good to be standing here in victory lane right now.”
Ryan Laye took third, Stacy Crider was fourth and Kevin Thomas was fifth. Heats
for the 36-cars on hand went to Gwizdale, Crane, Mark Digges and Randy Linaburg
with twin consolations going to Austin Kirby and Ed Gageby.
Gary Proctor also became a first-time Hagerstown winner with his victory in the
20-lap hobby stock cruiser feature. Proctor would recover from two early race
spins to take the lead from track champion “Krazy” Kenny Thomas on the
seventeenth lap to post the win.
“Man that was fun.” Proctor stated. “Kenny and I rubbed doors a little out there
tonight, it was just hard racing, and I want to thank everyone who helped me get
here.”
Kenny Thomas took second, William Crook came home third, Danny Holmes was fourth
and Nick Dibella filled the front five. Heats went to “Krazy” Kenny Thomas and
Brandon Churchy.
In the five-lap powder-puff event Wendy Jessmer also became a new Hagerstown
winner with her victory over Christine Stickley, Sue Walls, Dana Winters,
Carolyn Koontz, Lori Long, Alyssa Rowe and Brooke Heseman.
In the nightcap Tommy Thompson Demolition derby championship John Pittman was
the winner over the 16 cars entered.

SITES SCORES CAREER FIRST LATE MODEL TRIUMPH WHILE DEESE REPEATS AS LATE MODEL
CHAMPION FOR EIGHTH TIME
By Bob Vores
Hagerstown, Md. – Rusty Sites of St. Thomas Pa. led Hagerstown Speedway’s 26th
Annual McBee/Hays Championship 44-lap event twice on Saturday evening, the
second time for the final 13 circuits to score his first ever late model win and
also include his name on the exclusive list of drivers who have won the
prestigious event.
Roy Deese Jr. of Laurel, Md. ended fourth and recorded his career eighth late
model title which now ties Nathan Durboraw.
Mercersburg, Pa.’s Andy Fries scored his second Hoosier Tire-Mid Atlantic late
model sportsman win of the weekend and Hagerstown second while Pete Weaver of
Williamsport wrapped up his second consecutive title in the division.
Hagerstown’s Rick Stouffer took the checkered flag for his first time in the
Ernie D’s pure stocks as Drew Fitzsimmons, Boonsboro, ended atop the point
standings for his first ever time.
Krazy Kenny Thomas of Keedysville, Md. recorded his fourth consecutive hobby
stock cruiser triumph plus took the championship for the inaugural season of the
division.
All but Weaver’s win were remaining to be settled in these final point races.
Fries and Stouffer earned guaranteed starting positions in the Small Car
Nationals qualifiers which were postponed from the previous week.
The late model feature got off to a bumpy start when a seven car incident
occurred in turn three of the opening lap which involved the 2nd to 4th place
point drivers, Kyle Lear, Jim Bernheisel and Duane Harbaugh with Harbaugh unable
to rejoin the field along with four time event winner Gary Stuhler, Brian Booze
and Ashley Barrett.
Tim Murphy then set the pace with fourth starting Sites taking over the second
spot with Bryan Bernheisel, Tyler Hershey and Marvin Winters in a battle for
third by the fifth lap. Sites took the lead on the seventh lap as Winters moved
into the runner up spot three laps later. Frankie Plessinger was up from ninth
passed Hershey for third on the 11th circuit with Winters taking the top spot on
the 14th lap and 17th starting Deese entering the top five.
Hershey suddenly was off the pace on the 19th to bring out the yellow while
Lear, who had restarted 18th at the tail, was past Deese and into fourth for the
restart.
Winters continued to hold the advantage on Sites until the 32nd lap when the
rear axle broke on Winters’ racer which turned the lead back to Sites. Sites
began to stretch his lead over Plessinger and Lear and had more than 2.5 seconds
separation but scaled it back to 1.72 seconds at the checkered.
“This is one of the hardest things to do and that’s win a late model feature at
Hagerstown,” Sites said. “It’s a tough thing to do. I didn’t know Ronnie (McBee),
I was pretty young but I’ve been around here since my parents brought me here in
diapers. Speedy, I did know him a little bit and he was just a super intelligent
guy. That guy could set up a race car and win a lot of races. I’m very honored
to be standing here and win this race.”
Deese ended in the fourth spot with Jerry Bard next. Bernheisel also came from
the initial lap restart with Alan Sagi, Kenny Pettyjohn (from 23rd), Bryan
Bernheisel and Al Shawver completing the top ten. Tim and Matt Murphy along with
Winters won the heat races.
Fries started from the outside pole and beat Glenn Elliott into the first turn
while Mike Walls quickly moved to third. Fries was 1.44 seconds ahead and
nearing the rear of the field when Pete Weaver had his motor go up in smoke on
the tenth lap.
Fries continued to hold a marginal lead over Elliott who had one last shot at
taking over when Walls spun off turn two with one to go. Fries held on for the
win by .56 seconds over Elliott and Donnie Farlling.
“When you get that top groove and a little lip, I like to rim ride that a lot,”
Fries said.”I can keep my momentum up. I always say, when I’m rim riding, nobody
is going to pass me on the bottom.”
Charlie Shaffer, who started 11th, ended fourth with Paul Cursey completing the
top five. Mike Walls, Ronnie Dennis and Fries were the heat winners.
In the pure stocks, Stouffer took off from the outside pole with Billy Ecton Jr.
taking second as Kenny Dillon moved into third on the third circuit. Dillon
worked on Ecton until finally getting by on the eighth lap and then kept the
pressure on Stouffer but his final turn effort almost resulted in a complete
spin. He did recover but Stouffer was on his way to victory with Ecton again
taking over the runner up spot.
“These guys don’t give you nothing,” Stouffer said. “It doesn’t matter if you
start on the front row. The last couple weeks ago, it’s been good up high and
that‘s where I like to go and it worked out fine for me.”
Wayne Hawbaker, Kevin Koontz and Steve Lowery were next. Stouffer, Dave Stouffer
Jr. and Ecton Jr. won the heats.
Mark Vegh led the hobby stocks from third while Krazy Kenny Thomas began from
12th with only a five point advantage over ninth starter, Kenny Thomas. Krazy
Kenny moved forward to take third on the fifth lap and second on lap nine. He
worked on Vegh to go past him to lead lap 11 and following a lap 12 restart, won
by a half length over Brandon Churchey who restarted on the rear after an
opening lap incident. Craig Kline and Gary Proctor were the heat winners.
“I’m glad the race wasn’t one lap longer,” Thomas said. “We popped a belt with
two laps to go and I was watching the temperature gauge. Coming out of four, it
kicked the water out of it but it got us where we needed to go.”
With a one week absence, Hagerstown returns with the 5th Annual Small Car
Nationals which included the Late Model Sportsman, Pure Stocks, Four Cylinders,
Hobby Stock Cruiser, Powder Puff plus the 25th Annual Tommy Thompson Demo Derby
that was postponed from August 27th .

DEHAVEN JR. USES TRAFFIC TO HIS ADVANTAGE AND SCORES FIRST TIME IN ERNIE’S NON
STOP EVENT
Hagerstown, Md. – After battling for second and third, Ronnie DeHaven Jr.
surveyed the situation as he closed on Ashley Barrett who got mired in traffic.
DeHaven burst ahead with five laps to go in the 31st Annual Ernie D’s Shorty
Bowers Bull Durham Championship at Hagerstown Speedway Saturday night. DeHaven
of Winchester, Va. pulled away in his brand new Mastersbilt to score the triumph
by 2.304 seconds over previous week’s winner Barrett in the non-stop late model
event spun off in eight minutes 48 seconds. It was his first win since June
2008.
In the Hoosier Tire Mid Atlantic late model sportsman event, it the #99W of Chaz
Walls, Taneytown, Md. pitted against the #99 of Mike Walls (no relation), both
going for their career first win and the pair running side by side for most of
the race until Chaz held on by a length at the finish.
Tony Catlett of Hedgesville, WV scored his season second victory in the Ernie
D’s pure stock feature after edging four time winner Steve Lowery by three feet.
Following the qualifying heats, the top 12 late model drivers drew for starting
position in the Ernie’s event as Roy Deese Jr. and Barrett occupied the front
row with DeHaven and Jamie Lathroum sitting in row two. Lathroum never turned a
lap as his car came to a stop on the initial parade lap.
Barrett propelled around the top to pull ahead of Deese, Rusty Sites and DeHaven
as Deese was sent to fourth by the second lap to battle with Kyle Lear.
Barrett enjoyed a more than two second advantage over Sites when he caught the
rear of the field and tried to maneuver past two cars while Sites and DeHaven
quickly advanced. DeHaven took the runner up spot on lap 16 and caught Barrett
behind another rear car four laps later to seize the opportunity and speed into
the lead.
Once ahead, he slowly advanced until taking the checkered by 2.304 seconds over
Barrett and Sites.
“I could go about anywhere, it was a good race car,” said DeHaven Jr. “That
Ashley Barrett drove the wheels off that car. That was the advantage of me
watching what was going on and riding in second and third racing Rusty. I saw
what the lapped cars were doing. I think it was my night. I had a good starting
spot but luck plays a lot in it.”
Deese and Lear completed the top five. Jason Covert came from 19th to occupy
sixth at the finish, with Marvin Winters (12th), Jim Bernheisel, Bo Feathers and
Tyler Hershey completing the top ten.
Barrett picked up an additional $500 in lap money with DeHaven collecting $125.
Heats went to Jeremy Miller, J.T. Spence and Feathers with Covert taking the
consy.
Ronnie Dennis and Justin Weaver got together on the initial start of the late
model sportsman feature with Weaver getting a left front flat. Dennis then led
the first two laps with fourth starting Chaz Walls taking over on lap three as
Mike Walls joined them.
By the fifth lap, it was Walls and Walls side by side with Dennis looking on.
Mike Walls led lap eight but Chaz powered around the top to regain the point
with Mike again getting the advantage on laps 11 and 12. Neither driver was
giving up as Chaz again powered ahead as a lap 14 yellow put the procession in
single file. A slight bobble with two to go allowed Mike to close to a length
but settle for the runner up spot.
“It was a little tight and we had to put the three wheel brake on to get it
done,” C.Walls said. “ I wasn’t holding back. I just kept it down.”
Dennis held to third over Cody Lear and Scott Palmer. Ronnie Dennis, Paul Cursey
and Scott Palmer were heat winners.
Catlett began from the outside pole and beat pole sitter Keith Koontz off the
second turn as Lowery began to challenge Koontz on lap three until getting past
three laps later. Catlett was two seconds out front with a single caution waved
when Koontz spun. Lowery pulled ahead following the restart but Catlett came on
strong and dove into the turns to pull to the front again with the white flag
waving. Lowery kept the pressure on but ended three feet short at the line.
“That was a hard race,” Catlett said. “It was good to race Steve. When we
started, he was starting. I thought he had us and started getting away, but that
old Ford likes it up top. It was fast.”
Rick Stouffer came from tenth to finish third and get the Turner Bowling Centers
Hard charger award with Eddie McClellan and Dave Stouffer Jr. completing the top
five.
Heat winners were Bill Ecton Jr. and Catlett.
Racing resumes Saturday, August 27th with the Small Car Nationals Qualifier for
Late Model Sportsman and Pure Stocks plus the Hobby Stock Cruiser Special
postponed from August 6. The 25th Annual Tommy Thompson Demo Derby will also
conclude the program.

+ Hobby Stock Cruisers – Last point races for all divisions.
BARRETT ENDS HIS DOUBTS BY BAGGING FIRST LATE MODEL TRIUMPH, DILLON CAPTURES
FOURTH PURE STOCK CORNETT TRIBUTE
Hagerstown, Md. – Ashley Barrett cast aside his earlier season doubts about
advancing into the late model division by capturing his career first late model
triumph Saturday night at Hagerstown Speedway. Barrett, of Shippensburg, PA, led
all the way from the outside pole and held off Gary Stuhler by .81 seconds at
the checkered.
From sixth and taking the lead on lap seven, Hanover’s Kenny Dillon satisfied
his season for a second time and a career 24th, but fourth career score in the
16th Annual Cornett Tribute for the Ernie D’s pure stocks. He previously won the
event in 2000, 03 and 08.
Starting seventh, Newville’s Donnie Farlling was also a newcomer to victory lane
after he grabbed the lead with eight circuits remaining in the Hoosier Tire Mid
Atlantic late model sportsman feature and pulled ahead to win by 2.38 seconds
over Ronnie Dennis.
Krazy Kenny Thomas of Keedysville, MD edged Kenny Thomas off the final turn and
at the line by less than a bumper’s length to score his third consecutive hobby
stock feature. A protest was lodged following the win and an early morning
teardown resulted in the engine components found legal.
“Most of this season, I’ve asked myself ‘What am I doing here?'”, Barrett said.
“We get here and it just doesn’t seem like we can get one thing to go right.
We’ve had a few good runs, mostly at the beginning of the season. Things would
break or I’d wreck the car. I still knew how to drive, but I really have to
thank Ben Foor. He showed up and showed us some things we’ve been struggling
with set ups. This car was unreal, a completely different car than what we’ve
had in previous weeks. It was like a cake walk out there. It was ridiculous how
good that car was.”
Barrett took command while Rusty Sites and Stuhler battled for second as Tyler
Hershey quickly joined them within two laps. Stuhler secured the runner up spot
on lap seven while Hershey was past Sites two laps later.
Barrett continued to hold his own around the top side with Stuhler not allowing
him to even slip once and through two cautions before Hershey’s car came to a
stop on the 19th lap.
A final caution on lap 23 was for Roy Deese whose right rear went flat while up
to the fourth spot but Barrett was up for the green white checkered finish which
came .81 seconds over Stuhler, Kyle Lear (12th), Jim Bernheisel (9th) and Sites.
“Once we got about two laps in, I knew what kind of car I had under me. I didn’t
really care who was behind me,” Barrett said. “When the track is that fast on
the top and your car is good, no one is going by you if you can run the top
hard. You don’t have to worry about it. When I saw Gary Stuhler was behind me
and he was my favorite when I was a kid, I said ’I have to beat him”.
Duane Harbaugh was sixth with Alan Sagi, Brian Booze (18th), Bryan Bernheisel
(19th) and Al Shawver Jr.(15th) completing the top ten. Heats went to Hershey,
Barrett and Sites with B. Bernheisel taking the consy.
“I just said to dad, this is my first time since 1994 (in a street stock) that
I’ve been in victory lane down here. That’s a long time,” Farlling said. “I kept
saying tonight, ‘My wife wasn’t able to make it again. I’m going to win.’ One of
these times I’m going to have to win with her here.”
Richard Walls led from the pole while Paul Cursey moved in to challenge him as
did Glenn Elliott as Cursey took over on lap five with Elliott then taking the
lead on the seventh circuit.
Elliott was out front two seconds over Cursey and Farlling when a yellow erased
his lead and on the restart, Farlling blew by both and slowly stretched his lead
until the finish and 2.38 seconds ahead of Ronnie Dennis who seized second from
Cursey with five to go.
“On that restart, that was my only choice,” Farlling said of his winning pass.
“Both (Elliott and Cursey) ran the same line I was running. I was thinking,
’This is my shot right here. If I’m going to do it, do it right now, go to the
bottom and try’ and it came out like a rocket.”
Cursey, Elliott and Chaz Walls (14th) were next. R. Walls, Pete Weaver and
Rodney Walls were heat winners.
“I like the track like this. This just worked out perfect for me,” Dillon said
after his fourth Cornett victory. “This is my one of my favorite races of the
year, in fact I try to win it every year. I put so much emphasis on this race. I
started racing when Jim Cornett was still working on cars. He definitely had a
lot of ideas. He was a great guy. He loved the sport of auto racing more than
anybody I’ve ever met. He was a great help to me when I was first starting out
and I try to win this race so hard every year. I’m happy to be standing here
again.”
Kevin Koontz led from the outside pole and was being challenged by Bill Ecton
Jr., Keith Koontz, Steve Lowery and Ecton Sr. while Dillon was trying to get
through that traffic.
By the sixth lap, Dillon was into third and following a restart, charged into
the lead as tenth starter Tony Catlett had advanced and moved into the runner up
spot on lap nine. Catlett tried his best following a 13th lap restart but Dillon
stretched his lead to more than six lengths and continued to hold it until the
finish.
Third went to Eddie McClellan (12th) with Dave Stouffer Jr. and Drew Fitzsimmons
following. Heat winners were Lowery, Bill Ecton Jr. and Sr.
Kenny Thomas led from the pole over Mark Vegh while Krazy Kenny Thomas advanced
past Gary Proctor on lap eight into third and ran Vegh down to pass him with
three laps left. In the final turns, KK Thomas charged around the outside and
the pair raced to the finish line with KK Thomas having the advantage by less
than a bumper length for his third consecutive hobby stock score.
“In those last turns, he gave me the top and I took it,” KK Thomas said. “It all
worked out, three in a row is incredible.”
Racing resumes Saturday, August 20th with the 31st Annual Ernie D’s Shorty
Bowers-Bull Durham Championship, $2,500 to win for Late Models, along with the
Hoosier Tire Mid Atlantic Late Model Sportsman and Ernie D’s Pure Stocks.

BLANKENSHIP POSTS CAREER FIRST LUCAS –CONOCOCHEAGUE TRIUMPH
Hagerstown, Md. – Lacking a time trial, starting from the rear of the heat,
winning the B Main from seventh and then driving from 17th to first in the 30th
Annual Conococheague 50-lap Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series event, John
Blankenship not only posted his career first Lucas triumph but also his first
ever victory at Hagerstown Speedway on Saturday evening. Following two
consecutive second place finishes earlier in the week, Blankenship, 30, from
Williamson, WV, took the lead from pole sitter Jared Landers on the 29th lap and
later collected the $10,000 triumph by 4.015 seconds over current Lucas Series
point leader, Jimmy Owens.
“The race track was great,” Blankenship said. “I have to thank the American
Racer guys for helping me pick the right rubber. I’m glad to be up here. I’ve
been trying to win one of these for three years now. I hope it’s not the only
time this year.”
Eddie McClellan of Winchester, VA was awarded the Ernie D’s pure stock victory
following a post race inspection which resulted in the disqualification of Tony
Catlett who led the entire 15-lap feature.
Landers, who occupied the front row with Don O’Neal, pulled to the front as
third starting Owens quickly grabbed the runner up spot from O’Neal by lap two.
Landers was out front 1.7 seconds when the first caution was displayed on lap
eight for sixth starting Tyler Hershey who came up lame in the fourth turn. Two
laps later, Blankenship entered the top ten. Tyler Reddick, who started on the
rear with a provisional position, stopped on lap 14 for the next yellow flag.
Another yellow waved four laps later when two time series champion Scott
Bloomquist, who was fading backwards, headed pit side for a change of rubber.
Speeding through the pits, he attempted to enter the track in turn one but the
green flag had already put the field in motion but he then entered the track and
spun out to cause yet another caution as officials sent him pit side.
Blankenship was to fifth for the lap 19 restart and continued his assault,
passing O’Neal and then Austin Hubbard before setting his sights on Owens at the
halfway mark and then Landers, whom he got under for the lead on the 29th lap.
As the laps ticked away, Blankenship continued to get better and by the time he
started working rear traffic on lap 36, he was 3.25 seconds ahead of Owens who
had just passed Landers.
By the 42nd lap, Blankenship had stuck three rear cars between himself and Owens
and was still not missing a beat. He continued on to capture the biggest win of
his career by 4.015 seconds over Owens while it was another 3.546 seconds back
to Hubbard. Thirteenth starter, Earl Pearson Jr. and Jamie Lathroum, from 15th,
completed the top five.
“I felt like we were really good in the consy and it seemed like the race track
was going to be racy, at least early on and it turned out it was,” Blankenship
said. “You could really run all over the place. It was a lot of fun coming to
the front and it wouldn’t have been quite as fun to start up here.”
Steve Francis from eighth, Steve Shaver (11th), Josh Richards, Ray Cook (from
23rd provisional) and Rick Eckert (14th) completed the top ten. Landers, who was
first on the track for the 44 entries ended the Red Buck Cigars fast timer of
the evening with a lap of 18.469 seconds around the Maryland oval. Landers,
O’Neal, Owens and Bloomquist won the heats while Blankenship and Jeremy Miller
split the B Mains.
In the pure stock feature, Catlett, who won the previous race held, was aboard
another race car he purchased in the time period and quickly shot to the front
from third as Kevin Koontz was into second by the second lap. Ninth starter,
McClellan passed Koontz on the fifth lap and slowly reeled Catlett in and was
within three lengths by a single 12th lap caution. Following the restart,
Catlett held his line for the final three laps but McClellan, who was on his
bumper at the checkered, was awarded the win, his career second when Catlett’s
motor failed the inspection of the top five finishers. Koontz ended second
followed by Wayne Hawbaker, from 12th, Kenny Dillon and Drew Fitzsimmons.
Racing resumes Saturday, August 6th with the Buck-a-Butt Night featuring the
Ernie D’s Pure Stock Special and Hobby Stock Cruiser Special. Only ($1) one
dollar admission

PLESSINGER SCORES FIRST LATE MODEL WIN IN A YEAR
Hagerstown, Md. – Defending late model champion Frankie Plessinger of Big Cove
Tannery, Pa. captured his first triumph in just over a year Saturday evening
during Family Night at Hagerstown Speedway. His win came by two seconds over
Tyler Hershey.
Nearby Williamsport’s Justin Weaver posted his season second and Andy Fries,
Mercersburg, Pa, the July 2nd postponed feature and first since May, 2009, in
the Hoosier Tire Mid Atlantic late model sportsman. In the Ernie D’s pure
stocks, Wayne Hawbaker of Greencastle, Pa. won the scheduled feature, his first
since August 2008 while Tony Catlett of Hedgesville, WV. was victorious for the
first ever time in the July 2nd postponed event.
Plessinger started sixth in the non-stop late model feature, moved to second on
lap seven and then chased down race long leader Bo Feathers to take the lead
from him on lap 17. He is the eighth different winner this season.
“We finally got our motor back last night and the guys went completely over the
car today,” Plessinger said. “We’ve had bad luck all year, just stupid stuff
happening. I knew Bo started on the pole and when I got into second and started
catching him, the car felt better. We finally got one.”
Feathers and Brent Smith started from the front row following qualifying as
Plessinger was from sixth into third by the second lap and then took the runner
up spot from Smith on the seventh circuit when Feathers was all but four seconds
ahead.
Plessinger began reeling him in while Hershey moved to third to join him and
Marvin Winters was into fourth by the tenth circuit. Plessinger had the distance
cut in half by the eleventh lap and gained ground with each lap until he was on
Feathers bumper on the 15th circuit and sped ahead off the fourth turn on the
next circuit.
With the green flag still displayed, Plessinger began edging away from Hershey
until taking the checkered two seconds ahead with Winters taking the third with
two laps to go. Feathers and Kyle Lear completed the top five. Jerry Bard, Duane
Harbaugh, Jim Bernheisel, Roy Deese Jr. and Smith rounded out the top ten. Heats
went to Alan Sagi, Feathers and Plessinger.
In the scheduled late model sportsman event, Weaver began from the pole with
Glenn Elliott alongside as Weaver charged ahead as Elliott slid high in the
second turn but rebounded to grab second and chase Weaver the entire distance as
Cody Lear took third from Terry Flaherty on the 13th lap. Prior to an 11th lap
restart, Elliott pestered Weaver but could not get fully alongside and following
the restart, Weaver continued to hold the advantage to the checkered and won by
1.06 seconds. Lear ended third over Terry Flaherty and Pete Weaver. J. Weaver,
Lear and Elliott won the heats.
In the postponed feature, Justin Weaver took the initial lead from the outside
pole over Richard Walls and Fries while Bo Feathers advanced from 11th into
third by the fourth circuit. Fries passed Weaver and led the eighth and ninth
laps but Feathers sped past both Weaver and Fries following a ninth lap restart.
Feathers continued to lead and drove under the checkered first but his spoiler
height failed post race inspection with Fries, the 2006 through 2008 champion,
awarded the win. Wayne Walls Jr. ended in the runner up spot after advancing
from ninth to third by the halfway mark. Pete Weaver came from 14th to finish
fourth over 11th starting Cody Lear. J.Weaver, Fries and Elliott were the heat
winners.
In the scheduled pure stock feature, Hawbaker took the lead over Frank Dibella
while Dave Stouffer came from ninth to second by the seventh lap in the non-stop
feature. Hawbaker got to the rear of the field with two to go and made up a
small distance on Stouffer to capture the win over him by 1.16 seconds. Drew
Fitzsimmons, Kevin Koontz and Kenny Dillon were next. Fitzsimmons, Eddie
McClellan and Tony Catlett were the heat winners.
Catlett began from the pole in the postponed 15-lap feature and led over Bill
Ecton Sr. until Hawbaker got free of a six battle for second and was just over
two seconds behind Catlett at halfway. The caution came out with two to go but
Catlett held his line and beat Hawbaker by a length for his first ever win.
Fitzsimmons, Ecton Jr. and Danny Beavers were next. Catlett, Koontz and Charlie
Pensinger won the heats.
Stock car racing is on hold next weekend as the Monster trucks arrive for a
Friday to Sunday event, the Advance Auto Parts Monster Jam brought to you by
your local Ford dealer.
Racing resumes the following Saturday, July 30th, with the Lucas Oil Late Model
Dirt Series on hand for the 30th Annual Conococheague 50-lap event plus a pure
stock special.

COVERT ADDS NAME TO ROBERTS MEMORIAL WINNERS
Hagerstown, Md. – Total dominance was the best way to describe Jason Covert’s
victory of the 46th Annual Johnny Roberts Memorial at Hagerstown Speedway on
Saturday. Starting 12th in the Barry Klinedinst Rocket, Covert of York Haven,
PA, took the lead from Jerry Bard on the 15th circuit and was 11 seconds ahead
when the yellow was displayed with two laps to go. He then pulled away to score
his first ever Roberts triumph, his third win of the season and second
consecutive by 2.69 seconds over Bard. He remains the only repeat winner this
season in the nine late model events.
“All the credit goes to the team,” Covert said. “I’m pretty sure from 12th to
there with the handicapping system and we didn’t have any points and the guys
that run here every week are tough. The team gives me a tremendous car and
things went our way tonight. Things went our way last week too. It’s gratifying
to come back and win on Hoosiers. We appreciate them for helping us out.”
Rain began at the track following warm-ups with late models headed to the
staging area for their first heat race. With the high humidity combined with the
heavy showers, it made for a long evening as it was 10:00 p.m. when late models
got on the track again for their warm-ups and 10:15 when all heat races began
for the evening.
Knowing it would be late and with more rain showing to arrive later, drivers met
and agreed to change the format from 50 to 35 laps. Due to the late hour with
the fireworks and Roberts feature, the pure stock and late model sportsman
features were postponed until Family Night, July 16th.
Bard and Brent Smith started on the front row but fourth starter Duane Harbaugh
quickly grabbed the runner up spot with third starting Marvin Winters taking
third from Smith on the third circuit.
Bard pulled out to a nearly three second lead over Harbaugh before a lap 11
caution with Covert already advancing to fourth.
Covert shot past Smith for third the next lap and then pulled alongside Harbaugh
to pass him on the backstretch of the 13th. Covert was side by side with Bard on
the next round and then went under him to snatch the lead.
By a lap 19 caution, Covert had built a more than three second lead and
following the restart, did the same as he easily pulled way with each circuit.
With ten to go, he was out front cruising 5.63 seconds ahead and continued until
he was more than half a lap ahead and into rear traffic when the caution waved
for a stopped car.
In two laps, Covert was ready for victory lane, having won by 2.69 seconds over
Bard.
“I’ve been coming here since I was eight or nine,” Covert said. “This Johnny
Roberts Memorial means a lot. Just to have my name with a lot of those guys like
Gary and them, that’s pretty cool. It’s been a great night and I’m just tickled.
The car was just flawless.”
Jim Bernheisel got past Harbaugh for third on the 31st while Roy Deese Jr.
dropped Harbaugh to fifth the next circuit. Sixth went to Winters with Steve
Axell Jr., Nick Dickson, Kyle Lear and defending event winner Frankie Plessinger
completing the top ten.
Bard, Lear and Winters won the late model heats. Justin Weaver, Andy Fries and
Glenn Elliott were victorious in the late model sportsman heats while Tony
Catlett and Kevin Koontz were the pure stock winners.
Stock car racing is on hold next weekend as the two wheelers arrive for the 30th
Annual Hub City Classic for the AMA and Grand National motorcycles.
Racing resumes the following Saturday, July 16th, with Family Night and a five
feature program to include the regular three division show of late models, late
model sportsman and pure stocks in addition to the postponed late model
sportsman and pure stock features from tonight’s program.

HODNETT CLAIMS HAGERSTOWN’S SPRINT SPEEDWEEK SHOW
Hagerstown, Md. – Greg Hodnett surveyed the situation for numerous laps before
passing Jason Johnson on lap 19 of Hagerstown Speedway’s non-stop Pennsylvania
Sprint Car Speedweek event, later speeding 4.72 seconds ahead of Johnson for the
$5,000 triumph. Hodnett, of Thomasville, Pa, the 2009 and 2010 Speedweek
champion, became the fourth different winner in the week long series as he
earned his third overall win of the season and first at Hagerstown since the
2006 Octoberfest.
“In the open road he (Jason) was as good or better than we were,” Hodnett said.
“I was just trying different lines, knowing eventually we’d get to traffic and
try to know where I could and couldn’t go. Obviously you have a great advantage
in second place before you get there because when you’re in the lead, you want
to stay out front and keep running.”
Hodnett was third quick in times and pulled the number two for the 30-lap
feature to line up alongside Johnson. Johnson quickly pulled to the front as
Hodnett scrambled to grab the runner up spot over previous night winner, Tyler
Walker, Alan Krimes, Fred Rahmer and Danny Dietrich, the top six qualifiers who
pulled for the starting lineup. Krimes was past Walker by lap three with
Dietrich getting past Rahmer the next lap.
Hodnett continued to size up the situation while Krimes followed and Walker
trailed by nearly a straight stretch. Johnson caught the rear of the field on
the ninth lap as two laps later, Hodnett was on his bumper and again on the 14th
lap.
On the 18th, Johnson and Hodnett were again maneuvering traffic and Hodnett saw
an opening and opportunity to exit the fourth turn with the lead.
In five laps, Hodnett had stretched his lead to more than two seconds and
continued to go through more traffic. With three laps to go, three rear cars
separated him from Johnson.
“We were really tight in the qualifying race but we just had to work on it,
massage it a little bit,” Hodnett said. “The guys did a really nice job of
getting this thing rolling around. I haven’t won here in a few years, so it
feels really good to come here and get one done.”
Just like other facilities, the track changed but for the better even with sunny
and windy conditions.
“The track got wide. It was a little unforgiving in qualifying but going out
early helped us tremendously,” Hodnett said. “The track widened out to where it
was excellent racing. We could go outside somebody off the right rear, run up
top, run on the bottom and it made for a very exciting race, at least from where
I was anyway.”
Dietrich passed Krimes with one to go to end third while Walker finished fifth.
Rahmer held to sixth while Donnie Kreitz Jr., Adam Wilt, Lance Dewease and Daryn
Pittman, from 15th, completed the top ten.
Heats went to Brad McClelland, Justin Henderson, Mark Smith and Pittman while
Dewease was the consy winner. Johnson set the fast time of 16.665 seconds.
There were also 33 vintage restored racers from the Eastern Museum of Motor
Racing on hand for a display and track time.
Next up is the July 4th holiday weekend special this Saturday, the 46th Annual
Johnny Roberts Memorial, a 50-lap Late Model feature event plus the Late Model
Sportsman, Pure Stocks & Fireworks display. Warm-ups are at 7:00 p.m. Sunday
July 3rd is a rain date.

THE BROTHERS LEAR WERE HARD TO BEAT AT HAGERSTOWN
Hagerstown, Md. – The Lear’s have it. Brothers Kyle and Cody Lear were both
successful Saturday night at Hagerstown Speedway as Kyle of Severna Park, MD,
who has nine late model sportsman wins to his credit, scored his first ever late
model triumph after moving to the division this season. For younger brother
Cody, of Severn, MD, his Hoosier Daddy 25 triumph in the Hoosier Tire Mid
Atlantic late model sportsman was his career second after winning his first ever
in the division on June 30, 2007.
Hagerstown’s Dave Stouffer took the lead after three circuits to score his
season second in the Ernie D’s pure stocks while Krazy Kenny Thomas of
Keedysville, MD won his second straight in the hobby stock cruisers.
On the third attempt, the late models got underway with Marvin Winters sweeping
off the second turn to pull ahead of Ashley Barrett, Lear and Frankie Plessinger.
Winters pulled out to a 1.5 second advantage but Lear was into the runner up
spot by the second circuit and quickly began running him down. Lear closed to
Winters’ bumper on the eighth lap and surged ahead the next circuit with Bo
Feathers coming to a stop on lap 11 to regroup the field.
Lear took off on the restart with Winters chasing as Frankie Plessinger took
third from Barrett on the 13th lap and Jim Bernheisel passed him for fourth the
next lap. Lear maintained a more than one second advantage until catching rear
traffic on lap 19 and then began to stretch the distance on Winters until
heading off the final turn two lapped cars and 2.555 seconds ahead of Winters
with Plessinger next.
“The biggest thing is getting the bugs worked out of a new car that you’re not
used to driving, getting it fined tuned,” Lear said. “We went to some of the
speedweek shows and worked on the car a lot. We had some driver errors but we’re
getting better at that each week. The lack of performance on the car has been a
lack of talent of the driver.”
Bernheisel and Barrett were next followed by Alan Sagi, Roy Deese Jr., Duane
Harbaugh, Brian Booze and Tyler Hershey, who came from the rear after being
involved in the second restart attempt. Heat winners were Barrett, Bernheisel
and Lear.
“This is one of the hardest race tracks we’re ever going to go to in the
country,” Lear said. “Paul (Crowl), all my guys…it isn’t Paul, it isn’t me…a lot
of people put a lot of time on this race car every night during the week. It’s
not a hobby…it’s basically a part time job.”
In the Hoosier Daddy 25, Winters had the lead from the pole over Mike Walls as
fourth starting Cody Lear charged past both Walls and Winters to lead the fourth
circuit. Lear began pulling away from Winters while outside pole sitter Steve
Long grabbed the runner up spot on lap seven and was 2.34 seconds behind Lear.
Lear had stretched his lead to 2.9 seconds when the caution flag waved on lap
nine.
Lear then held a comfortable lead on Long while Winters trailed by nearly three
seconds until cautions on the 17th and 20th laps again regrouped the field.
Following the final restart, Lear ran his own race while Winters went around
Long and held the runner up spot until the final lap when Long retook the
position and finished 1.841 seconds behind Lear at the checkered. Winters, Wayne
Walls Jr. and Scott Palmer completed the top five with Pete Weaver coming from
20th to earn the St. Thomas Towing/Checkered Flag Lube hard charger award in
sixth. Donnie Farlling was next with Mike Walls, Terry Flaherty and Justin
Weaver following. Heats went to Winters, Long and J. Weaver with Tanner Kerr
taking the consy.
“The car was awesome,” Lear said. “It’s been fast all year. We’re just having
bad luck but we finally put it all together.”
Tony Catlett pulled to the front of the pure stock feature while Stouffer found
holes in traffic and charged from eighth to second by completion of the first
lap. He chased Catlett until getting past on the fourth lap and pulled away from
the five car battle for second. Billy Ecton Jr. had the spot with Catlett taking
it back on the tenth lap until Kevin Koontz entered the mix with two to go and
took it to end 1.14 seconds back. Drew Fitzsimmons ended third with Wayne
Hawbaker and Eddie McClellan next. McClellan and Catlett won the heats.
The hobby stock cruisers were included on the program after their third rain out
the previous week as Gary Proctor led the opening lap until Kenny Thomas went
by. Mark Vegh moved into the second spot on the third lap and Krazy Kenny Thomas
to third on lap seven. Vegh took the lead on the ninth lap while Thomas and K.K.
Thomas made it a tight three car battle during the final laps. Thomas retook the
spot on lap 12 with slight contact made heading into turn three on the final lap
as K.K. Thomas charged by on the inside when Thomas went high and bobbled
exiting turn four to end two lengths back. Proctor was third with Matt Smith and
Vegh returning to finish fifth.
Next Saturday, June 24, the Three State Flyers Late Models will take to the
track in the 4th Annual Red Nininger Memorial, a TSF Shootout open event with
Winchester. Having won the last TSF event at Hagerstown, the Bonebrake Tribute,
Jason Covert returns to the track 22 points ahead of J.T. Spence in the "Nininger’s
Tire and Auto Center Challenge in Memory of Red Nininger". The Ernie D’s Pure
Stocks will also be in competition. Warm ups begin at 7:00 p.m.

MARS’ LAST LAP PASS OPENS APPALACHIAN MOUNTAIN SPEEDWEEK AT HAGERSTOWN
By Bob Vores
Hagerstown, Md. – After 48 entries checked in for the 3rd Annual Appalachian
Mountain Dirt Late Model Speedweek opener at Hagerstown Speedway, Jimmy Mars’
first visit in several years netted him the $5,000 opening nights 40-lap
victory. It was the first ever at Hagerstown for the Menomonie, Wisconsin
veteran and resulted from a three wide pass of Austin Hubbard and Steve Shaver
in turn two of the final lap to edge Hubbard to the line by .605 seconds and
Shaver only another .259 seconds back.
“We’ve done well in heat races here before, got second and other top fives but
to get a win at a track like this with all the history behind it is pretty
cool,” Mars said. “We got our “hands slapped” in the heat race for jumping and
got put back, but we came back and won.”
It also was a first time win for Eddie McClellan of Winchester, VA who stretched
his lead in the last half of the Ernie D’s pure stock feature to win by 2.542
seconds over Kenny Day.
Shaver turned the quickest lap in time trials of 19.743 seconds and then pulled
a number three for the heat race inversion with the top two from the four heats
redrawing for starting position. Rick Eckert pulled the number one while Shaver
started alongside on the front row.
On the start, Gary Stuhler and Kyle Lear had mechanical issues and pitted while
only Stuhler returned to action and on the second try, Eckert pulled out front.
Shaver pulled alongside several times in the first eight laps until getting past
before Dylan Yoder and Jim Bernheisel were involved in a turn four caution the
next lap.
Shaver led on the restart with Eckert and ninth starter Hubbard now past Vic
Coffey into third and went to the 14th circuit before Duane Harbaugh shredded a
tire.
Shaver continued to lead while Hubbard got past Eckert three laps later as did
Coffey and 11th starting Mars by the halfway mark.
The final yellow was displayed for Jeremy Miller on lap 23 when he pulled
pitside.
In the final 15-lap stretch, Shaver held off a few challenges from Hubbard while
Mars joined them as they edged away from Coffey while Jamie Lathroum got
stronger and advanced to pass Dan Stone on the 34th circuit and Coffey the next.
With two laps remaining, the front three were bumper to bumper as Hubbard looked
inside Shaver while Mars came to the line in second for the white flag. Suddenly
Shaver was stuck in the middle of turn two as Hubbard ducked inside and Mars was
squeezed against the fence for a three wide exit. Mars won the race off the turn
and headed towards the final turns and the checkered ahead of Hubbard and
Shaver.
“I thought I was good on the outside the whole time,” Mars said. “The marbles
get blown away on the last restart.”
Lathroum held to a strong fourth with Coffey ending fifth. Sixth went to Stone
with 17th starter J. T. Spence seventh, Tim McCreadie, Roy Deese Jr, from 24th,
and 21st starting Jason Covert completing the top ten. Heats went to Stuhler,
McCreadie, Miller and Coffey with B mains to Covert and Frankie Plessinger.
“I didn’t even think about anyone else,” Hubbard said. “I was so concentrated on
looking at Shaver and figuring out what I needed to do and all of a sudden, Mars
turned right on me on the last lap and that’s never good. Honestly I thought the
track was awesome tonight. When you get the track done like this and everybody
can move around and run what lane you want and carry speed, that’s what makes
good races.”
“Jimmy had a little different tire on than me, Austin had the same,” Shaver
said. “I think his tire got better on the upper groove the last few laps. I
tried to move down a little bit and I think it actually hurt me. Third place
here is pretty good. I don’t normally run that good here at Hagerstown so we’re
tickled to death. Leading like that, I would like to have hung on for the win.”
In the pure stock feature, Kenny Day pulled to the front from the pole while
fourth starting McClellan took over on the second circuit. Following back to
back cautions on laps five and six, he began to pull away from the field until
reaching the checkered by 2.542 seconds ahead of Day who also had his best ever
finish. Third went to Steve Lowery who came from the rear following the lap six
caution with Danny Beavers and Frank Dibella next. McClellan and Dave Stouffer
Jr. won the heats.
“It was nice to get out front and get the win tonight,” McClellan said. “I
really have to thank Mike Warrenfeltz. The car wouldn’t run during warm-ups and
he changed the distributor for me. I guess the rest is history now.”
Hagerstown returns this Saturday evening with a regular three division show of
Late Models, Hoosier Tire Mid Atlantic late model sportsman and Ernie D’s pure
stocks plus the Hobby Stock Cruisers are included on the program. Warm ups begin
at 7:00 p.m.

COVERT ENJOYS WINNING HAGERSTOWN’S THREE STATE FLYER BONEBRAKE TRIBUTE
By Bob Vores
Hagerstown, Md. – Jason Covert became Hagerstown Speedway’s fifth different
winner in as many events Saturday night when he scored a triumph in the Three
State Flyers Late Model Series 16th Annual Richard “Boney” Bonebrake Tribute.
The event was the Hagerstown/Winchester Shootout. Restarting with five laps to
go in the 35-lap Tribute, Covert, of York Haven, Pa, sped away to score the win
by 1.25 seconds over Austin Hubbard. He also recorded victory in the 2009
Bonebrake event.
“When I was a kid, I came here and rooted for Denny Bonebrake,’ Covert said.
“Anyone with that name is cool. It’s really an honor to win tonight.”
Justin Weaver of nearby Williamsport recorded his second career win by
dominating the Hoosier Tire Mid Atlantic late model sportsman by a 7.09 second
victory over Chad Myers. Chambersburg, PA’s Steve Lowery grabbed the Ernie D’s
pure stock lead on the third lap and later scored his third of five events so
far this season.
Following the dash for the Flyers late models, Gary Stuhler and Covert started
from the front row as Stuhler pulled out to lead with the opening lap cautioned
for a fourth turn incident involving Frankie Plessinger, Jamie Lathroum, Roy
Deese Jr. and Rick Eckert with Deese and Eckert able to restart on the rear.
Covert was ready to toss his first challenge at Stuhler, went to the high side
and was ahead by the fourth lap. Austin Hubbard took Stuhler’s spot by the
seventh circuit while J.T. Spence and ninth starting Gerry Bard were chasing.
By the tenth lap, Covert and Hubbard had stretched their lead over Stuhler and
were more than four seconds ahead by the 15th round. Covert began through the
rear of the field on the 21st lap while Spence had passed Stuhler and was five
seconds back. Covert caught some heavy traffic but quickly maneuvered past them
but wasn’t able to shake Hubbard.
Following a caution on lap 31which regrouped the field. Covert opened more
distance on Hubbard in the final laps than he enjoyed the entire race.
“What an honor to race with Gary and with Josh, Austin, Rick,” Covert said.
“They’re the best in the business. This is great. This is Memorial Day weekend
and we have to thank anyone that fought for our freedom. We worry about racing
and others worry about not having freedom. Now that my daughter is in the Air
Force and overseas, I told her I was going to try and win. This takes on a whole
new meaning for Memorial Day. I want to thank any of the veterans that did that
for us so I get to enjoy a little bit of the freedoms that most of the world
doesn’t have.”
Spence held to third with Josh Richards, from 14th and Stuhler completing the
top five. Bard was sixth followed by Dylan Yoder (11th), provisional starter
Rick Eckert, the Round Hill Service Hard Charger from 25th, Greg Saterlee (24th)
and Alan Sagi (18th). Heats went to Kenny Pettyjohn, Covert, Brian Booze and D.
J. Myers while Kyle Lear and Ronnie DeHaven Jr. won the B mains.
Seventeen year old Weaver and Chad Myers lined up on the front row with Weaver
speeding off and by the fifth lap, was 2.5 seconds ahead and getting better. By
a lap 11 caution, he enjoyed a 5.4 second lead over Myers and Mike Walls.
Following the restart, it was the same all over again as he began stretching his
distance each lap until taking the checkered with more than seven seconds
advantage over Myers with Walls, Terry Flaherty and Rodney Walls competing the
top five. Weaver, Walls and Myers won the heats.
“The car was really good,” Weaver said. “I can’t thank A & C Racing Engines
enough. I owe it all to them.
After Bill Ecton Jr. led the first two laps of the pure stock feature, Lowery
was quickly to second from the sixth starting spot to seize the number one
position on the third lap. Ninth starter Darrin Younker pulled into the runner
up position the next circuit.
Lowery and Younker were joined by Drew Fitzsimmons in a three car battle at the
front with Younker pulling alongside several times and Fitzsimmons trying to
squeeze through the middle. A caution set up a green-white-checkered as Lowery
prevailed by only .28 second over Younker with Fitzsimmons still trying for
second until the end. Ecton and Kevin Koontz followed. Lowery and Wayne Hawbaker
won the heats.
“I knew those guys were there but I didn’t want to overrun it and give them an
opportunity, “Lowery said. “Darrin was definitely was trying hard.”

NO LATE MODEL SECOND FOR BARD THIS TIME, WEAVER WINS BOWMAN CLASSIC
Hagerstown, Md. – Leading the late models previously, Jerry Bard just hasn’t
sealed the deal and second wasn’t an option Saturday night at Hagerstown
Speedway. A former four cylinder champion and late model sportsman racer, Bard,
of Shippensburg, PA added his name to the late model winners for the very first
time by grabbing the checkered over seven time champion Roy Deese Jr., by .72
second.
“I’ll tell you what, this is unbelievable, “Bard said. “My guys work hard, my
wife, I just don’t know what to say. Last year, a couple lapped cars got me in
trouble and held me up. Roy got by me. I wasn’t letting up for nothing tonight.”
Patiently running second, defending late model sportsman champion Pete Weaver of
nearby Williamsport got past Chaz Walls and led the final ten laps to win the
3rd Annual Bill Bowman Classic.
“Bill worked with my father. I was very honored to win the first annual and
really wanted to win the second, but we didn’t quite make it,” Weaver said. “Any
time I can win one in Bill’s name, he was a good racer, and he was all about
racing. It was really cool to win this one this year for him.”
Dave Stouffer Jr. took over on the second lap to score his fourth career win in
the Ernie D’s pure stocks. Jim Harshman of Boonsboro, Md outlasted the four
cylinders to win the 1st Annual Blue-Gray Towing and Recovery 4 Cylinder Demo
Derby.
Bard lined up on the pole position and won the battle off the second turn over
Ashley Barrett with sixth starter, defending champion Frankie Plessinger passing
Brent Smith into third on lap two.
Plessinger slowed on the fifth lap to bring out the caution as Bard continued to
lead while tenth starter Deese took third from Smith on lap six. Barrett then
had radiator fan problems and retired to the pits as Deese moved into second for
the restart.
Deese threw his best punch at Bard on lap 12 as Kyle Lear took third the same
circuit and Keith Jackson followed into fourth.
Bard still continued to hold a slight edge on Deese after another restart on lap
16 and then on lap 21 when Jackson drifted to a stop. Plessinger leaked water on
the track the subsequent lap to set up a three lap dash but Bard was up to the
task while Deese also was being challenged by Lear. After his car erupted into a
fireball in his heat, Gary Stuhler came from 17th to finish fourth over Ken
Dickson. Smith ended sixth with Alan Sagi, Brian Booze, Duane Harbaugh, from
23rd, and Wes Bonebake completed the top ten. Smith, Barrett and Jackson were
the heat winners.
From the pole, Chaz Walls pulled ahead in the Bowman event with third starter
Cody Lear grabbing second over Paul Cursey with Cursey taking second on the
fourth circuit while sixth starter Weaver moved him back a spot then next round.
Walls was out front 1.25 seconds when a caution came on lap eight and he
continued to hold a one plus second advantage as Bruce Kane and Steve Axtell Jr.
moved into the third and fourth positions.
On the 20th lap, Walls slipped slightly in the second turn as Weaver was already
there to take advantage. Weaver then set sail after two restarts to beat Walls
to the line by .75 second as Kane came up light at the scales to advance Axtell,
Cursey and Trevor Feathers who restarted on the rear during a lap two caution.
Lear, Donnie Farlling and Andy Fries won the heats.
“Chaz was having the same problem I was down in three and four, the car was
tight right in the middle,” Weaver said. “Every time I thought I could
capitalize on his mistake, we made a mistake and Doug had me slow down. That was
the key to getting past him. I was calm and collective enough when he made the
next mistake and without that, we might not have won.”
Wayne Hawbaker sped off the outside pole to take the pure stock lead over
Stouffer who pulled to the front on the next lap with Bill Ecton Jr. taking the
runner up spot on lap three.
From a sixth lap restart, Ecton continued to keep the pressure on Stouffer to
the end who collected his career fourth triumph by only .25 second at the
finish. Hawbaker, Steve Lowery and Charlie Pensinger were next. Kenny Dillon and
Ecton were the heat winners.
On Saturday’s Memorial Day weekend program, Hagerstown will present the 16th
Annual Richard “Boney” Bonebrake Tribute which is a Three State Flyers Shootout
35-lap open event for the late models. The Hoosier Tire Mid Atlantic late model

WEATHER WINS FOR A THIRD TIME AT HAGERSTOWN
Hagerstown, Md. – April showers have spilled into May as once again, Hagerstown
Speedway has been forced to cancel its Saturday program due to the weather.
Rain was falling earlier today and with the forecast calling for and showing
more precipitation to arrive later this late afternoon, track owner Frank
Plessinger was left with little choice but to cancel the program.
“We’re not having much luck with these early season programs,” Plessinger said.
“This makes the third show lost of our first seven scheduled events.”
The regular show of late models, late model sportsman and pure stocks which also
included the hobby stock cruisers will not be rescheduled.
Next Saturday, May 21, Hagerstown will try again with Student Night which will
feature the Hoosier Tire Mid Atlantic late model sportsman in the Bill Bowman

SPENCE TAKES THE CASH IN HAGERSTOWN’S STEEL BLOCK BANDIT GREG KERR MEMORIAL
By Bob Vores
HAGERSTOWN, MD. -- It wasn’t easy but JT Spence made it look that way Saturday
night at Hagerstown Speedway when he dominated the Steel Block Bandit Greg Kerr
Memorial event aboard the Doug Timmons owned late model sportsman. Spence, of
Winchester, VA set second quick time for the evening, won his heat and then
pocketed $200 after winning the dash for the top six heat winners. He then led
all the way from the pole in the 30-lap Memorial event to win by 2.47 seconds
over Kyle Lear and made it a total payday of $4,300.
“Doug and them build one hell of a piece. They have the knowledge and equipment,
I just had the privilege of driving it,” Spence said. “We wanted to win this
race. Doug quarter midget raced with Greg and I knew Tanner and them pretty good
so we wanted to see if we could win. I’ve know Tanner for a couple years now.
He’s helped on my car. You couldn’t find a nicer family. Greg used to come to
the shop and shoot the breeze about racing. This means a lot to win this one.”
Krazy Kenny Thomas of Keedysville, MD was victorious in the hobby stock cruiser
division after taking control of the feature with five laps remaining and
winning by a length over Kenny Thomas.
Spence surged forward on the start to beat defending series champion Walker
Arthur off the second turn while Lear pulled ahead of Rick Singleton and Andy
Fries to take third on the third circuit.
After a fourth lap yellow, Rick Hulson, who earlier set fast time, slowed with
mechanical problems to retire on the seventh circuit as three cars got together
in turn one trying to avoid his slowing racer but were able to continue for the
restart.
A 12th lap caution for a spin in turn four had Spence still continue to pull
ahead of Arthur by more than a second until the 17th circuit, when fourth quick
timer Andy Fries retired with mechanical problems.
Spence was even stronger following the final restart and pulled away more than
two seconds by the 22nd circuit and approached the rear of the field. Lear kept
the pressure on Arthur and took the runner up spot on the white flag lap as
Spence was into the rear cars and then stretched the distance on the final lap
to 2.47 seconds and a lapped car back to Lear and Arthur.
“When you start on the pole and lead all the way, you have everything to lose,”
Spence said. “I lost my brakes there with about five laps to go and that one
lapped car about put me in the infield. I was going into three and four with my
foot to the floor on the brake and on the gas at the same time trying to get it
to turn.”
Tyler Armstrong came from ninth to get past 12th starting Bo Feathers for fourth
with five circuits to go while Feathers ended fifth. D.J.Troutman was sixth with
Rick Singleton, Al Shawver Jr. from 14th, Kenny Moreland and 18th starter Mike
Walls completing the top ten.
At 52 entries, the field was the largest ever assembled for a Steel Block Bandit
event as Rick Hulson’s 19.090 second trip around the half mile was quick time of
the evening. Heat wins went to Walker Arthur, Spence, Lear, Andy Fries, Rick
Singleton and Booper Bare. Sean Merkel and Matt Parks scored the B Mains
Gary Proctor led the first circuit for the hobby stock cruisers while Mark Vegh
sped past on the second lap and Thomas passed Proctor and then began looking at
the options to get past Vegh. Thomas got past but Vegh came back to pull ahead
and made contact with Thomas off the second turn just as a caution came out.
Vegh’s tire went flat under yellow as Thomas took over for the restart while
Kenny Thomas was on his bumper for the restart and along with Proctor, gave it
their best over the final laps. Krazy Kenny Thomas prevailed by a length at the
checkered as Danny Holmes and Larry Hurley followed Proctor to complete the top
five.
There will be no racing this Saturday, May 7 but the Hagerstown Firefighter’s
Bonanza Extravaganza will take place at the speedway. Racing action returns on
Saturday, May 14th with a regular three division show of late models, late model
sportsman and pure stocks plus will also include the hobby stock cruisers.

Richards Opens Three State Flyers Series With Saturday Hagerstown Victory
Steve Lowery Claims Season Second Pure Stock Triumph
By Doug Watson
Total domination. That’s the best way to describe Shinnston West Va.’s Josh Richard’s season opening “Three State Flyers Series” win Saturday at the Hagerstown speedway. In scoring his first feature win of the season at Hagerstown, the defending and two-time World of Outlaw’s series late model champion, became the third different winner in the three-week old season at the venerable Maryland Half-mile.
After scoring a win in the dash, Richards earned the pole for the start of the 35-lap Stanley Schetrompf classic. As the pack took the green flag Richards, wheeling his Ernie Davis owned Rocket no.25, out-dragged fellow front-row line mate Kyle Lear as they raced into turn one. From that point on, it would be a race for second as Richards would go on to lead every lap of the event earning the $3000 pay day that went along with it.
However, as Richards lead, The race for second was quite intense. Eventual runner-up Kyle Lear held the spot the entire distance but had to withstand the constant pressure from Austin Hubbard and Jamie Lathroum that kept the crowd on their feet. As Richards took the checkered flag, Lear would come home second for his best-ever late model finish at Hagerstown with Hubbard settling for third. Tenth-starting Jason Covert would place fourth and Dylan Yoder would claim the Round Hill Auto Service hard charger award as he came from 13th on the grid to round out the top-five.
“I really enjoy racing here at Hagerstown, it’s always a lot of fun.” Race
winner Josh Richards stated in victory lane. “This is one of the best tracks
I’ve raced on all year so far, there wasn’t a bump on it. I just hope it was a
good show for the fans.” A well-prepared race car made Richards job that much
easier. “ I cant thank Ernie and Connie Davis and all the people who help with
this car.” Richards said. “This Roush/Yates engine in this car is so strong, but
the track was a little slick tonight, so I had to be really careful with the
throttle.” Late race lapped traffic was the only scare Richards faced the entire
event. “You just never know how big of a lead have so you have to be really
careful in lapped traffic, but the cautions came when we needed them, and
everything turned out good.”
Heats for the 30 Nininger’s Tire and Auto Center Challenge late models went to Richards, Jamie Lathroum and Kyle Lear with Jerry Bard claiming the consolation.
The Ernie D’s pure stocks were also part of the program and when it was all said and done, current point leader Steve Lowery became the first repeat winner of the season in the divisions 15-lap event. Bill Ecton and Billy Ecton Jr. brought the field to the initial green flag of the race. Bill Ecton would lead one lap before sixth starting Eddie McClellan took the top spot on lap-two. McClellan, who would go on to lead the remaining laps of the contest, would have to repel the advances of tenth-starting Steve Lowery to post the win. However, McClellan failed a post-race inspection, handing the win over to Lowery. Drew Fitzsimmons came home second, Bill Ecton held on for third, Charlie Pensinger was fourth and Wayne Hawbaker completed the top-five. Coming from tenth to first, Lowery also claimed the Turner Bowling Centers hard charger award.

NEW TEAM AND ALL, STUHLER’S WINS HIS FIRST TIME OUT
Hagerstown, Md. – Following two wins last season including the season ending
Octoberfest, Gary Stuhler came right back for the first time in 2011 in a brand
new Rocket chassis late model and with a brand new team to claim victory on
Saturday evening at Hagerstown. In a six car inverted field, the Greencastle Pa.
veteran led all the way from the pole to post his career 129th victory by 1.75
seconds over Nick Dickson in a final four lap run to the checkered.
Running only one race previously at Hagerstown late last season, Kenny Moreland
of Waldorf, Md. made it look easy as he also led all the way from the pole with
a six car invert for his career first Hoosier Tire-Mid Atlantic late model
sportsman win at the facility, holding off Steve Axtell Jr. by a mere .44
seconds. Kenny Dillon, Hanover, Pa. also got the number one spot for the Ernie
D’s pure stock feature to later record his career 23rd win by only three feet.
Stuhler took the green over Keith Jackson while third starter Dickson took the
runner up spot away on lap four. Stuhler continued to maintain a second
advantage lap on Dickson lap after lap as fifth starter Roy Deese Jr. moved past
Jackson on the tenth circuit and closed in as did Jim Bernheisel who took over
the fourth spot on lap 13.
Stuhler was into the rear of the field on lap 17 as the first of two cautions
then came out on lap 19 when seventh runner Duane Harbaugh had problems and
retired. Two circuits later seventh runner Brent Smith became involved with a
lapped car to send both off on the hook.
Stuhler easily stretched out his lead in the final circuits with Deese holding
to third over Bernheisel while Greg Satterlee came from 13th to finish fifth.
Jackson was followed by Alan Sagi, Kyle Lear, Frankie Plessinger and Tyler
Hershey to complete the top ten. Heats went to Bernheisel, Deese Jr. and Marvin
Winters.
“Everybody put a whole team effort in this deal,” Stuhler said. “All these guys
have worked their tails off and there have been a lot of long nights. They’ve
been up every night this week pretty late, Saturday’s and Sunday’s. It was just
a good night. We got a good starting spot and everything worked out for us.”
Moreland quickly put his car into the first turn before Scott Palmer and began
stretching his lead lap after lap while eighth starter Axtell Jr. was putting on
a driving exhibition around the top of the turns and heading towards the front.
He passed Palmer on lap 12 prior to the first caution being displayed as
Moreland lost a 5.4 second lead.
Moreland took off under green while Andy Fries moved to third but the next
caution on lap 17 was for him after coasting to a stop. Again, Moreland was off
and running but Axtell didn’t make the final circuits easy as they came from the
final turn bumper to bumper.
“Every caution that came was one too many,” Moreland said. “I was looking at the
scoreboard and I was on the wheel, keeping it straight the best I could. I have
two wins at home (Potomac) and now wanted to go out and get some wins someplace
else. Hagerstown is definitely the place to be. A lot of good guys have won
here, it means a lot.”
Third went to the previous week’s winner, Pete Weaver, who was the Checkered
Flag Lube/St. Thomas Towing hard charger after coming from 12th. He was followed
by Trevor Feathers and Glenn Elliott. Wayne Walls Jr., Donnie Farlling, Palmer,
Tom Wagner and Mike Walls were next. Heats went to Feathers, Weaver and Walls
Jr.
Dillon surged to the front but third starting Dave Stouffer Jr. was on his
bumper and pestering him from the first lap while previous week’s winner Steve
Lowery was up from the 12th spot by the third lap. Dillon held onto his racer
several times following contact on the backstretch but went on to claim the win
by three feet over Stouffer and Lowery. Charlie Pensinger and Wayne Hawbaker
were next.
“I hate starting on the pole as everyone expects you to win but it’s just great
to be here this early in the year,” Dillon said. “This is my favorite type of
track to race on. When it’s tacky, I’m good.”
Hagerstown Speedway returns next Saturday, April 16th, with a regular three
division show plus will also include the hobby stock cruisers for their second
appearance. Warm ups begin at 7:00 p.m.

MILLER STEALS A LATE LEAD FROM RICHARDS TO SCORE HAGERSTOWN SPEEDWAY’S OPENER
Hagerstown, Md. – For the first time since August 2009, it was Miller Time
during Saturday evening’s brisk opening event at Hagerstown Speedway. Jeremy
Miller of Littlestown, Pa. chased defending season opening race winner and World
of Outlaw Late Model champion for 24 circuits before using lapped traffic to
charge around him and head to the checkered with 1.69 seconds and two lapped
cars to spare. It was Miller’s career 28th triumph which tied him for ninth on
the all time late model win record.
“If you’re the leader and it’s happened to me before, you have all the wrong
places to go,” Miller said. “You have everything to lose and the guy in second
has everything to gain and that’s what happened here. Josh is definitely one of
the best. Even when I was out there running second, I wanted to beat him, but if
I’d finished second to him, that would have been an awesome run for us.”
Defending Hoosier Tire Mid Atlantic late model champion Pete Weaver of nearby
Williamsport was victorious while Chambersburg, Pa.’s Steve Lowery collected his
career second win in the Ernie D’s pure stocks. Kenny Thomas of Greencatle, Pa.
was the inaugural winner of the new hobby stock cruiser division.
Weaver raced 13 laps with 2006 to 2009 champion Andy Fries on his bumper,
alongside or in front of him for one lap to exit turn four with Fries still
alongside as Weaver picked up his career 18th win by less than six feet to move
him to fourth on the all time winners list. Lowery moved into contention before
the halfway mark and seized the lead on the tenth circuit to continue on for a
three foot victory over Eddie McClellan. A five time enduro winner, Thomas got
past Brandon Churchey with three circuits to go and won by less than a length.
Following the season opening cancellation the previous weekend, Miller, Weaver,
Lowery and Churchey are now atop the Miller Light Race for the Championship
Point Fund standings.
With a heads up start, Richards sped into the first turn but Miller stayed with
him as they immediately pulled away from Alan Sagi and began closing on the rear
cars by the seventh circuit. Richards had passed one car before the yellow was
displayed and on the restart, Miller didn’t let him escape as they again opened
nearly three seconds over Sagi, Jerry Bard and Tyler Hershey.
Following a lap 15 yellow, Miller still remained on Richards’ rear bumper as
they closed on the rear of the field on the 23rd circuit and Richards got past
the first with several looming ahead. When Richards remained low into the third
turn, Miller seized the opportunity to head around the outside and take the spot
to speed to the checkered.
“I want to dedicate this to mom,” Miller said. “She’s had some rough times over
the winter but looks great now. We’re hoping for the best for her and also my
wife Julie. We found out a couple months ago she’s expecting.”
“This is a brand new car out of the box. I put more effort into this car than
probably when I built my street stocks. It was a lot of hard work. There isn’t a
piece on this thing that I didn’t have a hand in.”
Richards took the runner up position with Sagi, Bard and Roy Deese Jr, finishing
fifth after getting past Hershey with three to go. Hershey, Duane Harbaugh,
Jamie Lathroum, Denny Bonebrake and Nick Dickson completed the top ten. Heat
winners were Richards, Miller, Hershey and Sagi.
Weaver was quick on the throttle at the start to beat Paul Cursey into the first
turns but then Fries moved into second on lap five and following a lap seven
restart, Fries was not allowing Weaver any room for error. The two gave third
runner Terry Flaherty a show as Fries kept up his assault until taking the lead
on lap 13, only to have Weaver wheel his racer back past and hold on until the
finish.
“I want to thank Andy for racing me clean,” Weaver said. “I knew he was there. I
kinda snoozed there and he got up beside me so I had to get back up on the
wheel. We’re glad to pull this one off.”
Flaherty ended third with Scott Palmer and Weaver’s son Justin, finishing fifth.
Cody Lear came from 17th to sixth to collect the Checkered Flag Lube/St. Thomas
Towing hard charger award. Heat winners were Cursey and Weaver.
Stouffer Jr. pulled ahead of Darrin Younker on the start while fifth starting
Lowery took the runner up position on the fourth lap and began challenging
Stouffer. Lowery finally cleared Stouffer on lap ten and then had to fend off
the charge of Eddie McClellan for the final four circuits to score the win by
three feet. Stouffer was third with Kenny Dillon and Drew Fitzsimmons next.
Heats went to Stouffer and Younker.
The inaugural hobby stock cruiser feature saw Brandon Churchey pull out front in
the non-stop event while pole setter Thomas had to run him down. Making the pass
to lead the ninth lap, he continued on for the win while Mark Vegh and Krazy
Kenny Thomas ended in the next positions when Churchey was disqualified
following post race inspection.
Next Saturday, April 9th, Hagerstown Speedway will to action return with a
regular three division show excluding the hobby stock cruisers. Warm ups begin
at 7:00 p.m.
