ELKINS, WEST VIRGINIA- Just when it looked like another speedway might be destined for closure, the Skidmore family and promoter Norm McDougal came to the rescue of the Elkins Raceway. The new Elkins Raceway is ready to race in 2011! Promoter Norm McDougal and track manager Jim Skidmore and his crew have an exciting season of high-power racing action planned at the 3/8 mile speedtrack in the the mountains! This good news also brings great news for the American Motor Racing Association who will once again be the sanction of the modified division.

Elkins has been a long-time supporter of the AMRA. In 2011 it has posted a $500, $300, $250, $200, $175, $150, $140, $130, $120, and $100 from 10th through 24th payoff for the modifieds. Friday, May 6 is opening night for the highly touted speedway.

Norm McDougal has been around racing for many years and in several different capacities. This year he will try his hand at promoting with Jim Skidmore as track manager.

"The AMRA is proud to have Elkins Raceway back in its line-up," said AMRA president Larry Keefer. "Elkins has been associated with AMRA for many years. We were saddened when we thought we might lose the track, but now thanks to Norm McDougal and Jim Skidmore, racing will once again be prominent in the West Virginia mountains. Not only is Elkins a great place to watch a race, but the scenery is beautiful. It makes a good weekend get-away for the fan wanting to make a weekend of it."

Built in 1952, Elkins Raceway has seen some of racing's biggest stars pass through its gates. The semi-banked 3/8 mile oval has seating for 4,000 and runs Friday night's throughout the summer. Feature attractions are the Super Late Models, Semi-Lates, AMRA E-mods, Street Stocks, Hornets, and Mini-Wedges.

Elkins Motor Speedway is located just North of Kerens, WV off US 219 and is 8.5 Miles North of Elkins, WV or 14.5 Miles South of Parsons, WV. K-C will host the Road Warriors May 7th and Super Weekend for Modifieds will be held at Natural Bridge and Beckley June 10 and 11th.

Elkins Speedway 2011 Schedule

4/23/2011. Promoters at the Elkins Speedway have just released a Tentative Schedule for the 2011 Racing Season.

Highlight of the schedule at the present time is the 41 lap 11th Annual Chuck Gear Memorial on Friday June 17 paying $3000 to the winner. This race is a UFO doubleheader with the Thunder Valley Raceway, Central City, PA which also pays $3000 to the winner. This weekend has a total UFO purse of $31,000.

Also scheduled for SLM are the Richard G. Skidmore Memorial sponsored by Seneca Satellite on July 22 paying $2000 to the winner, with a $500 Dash for Cash by Roy’s RV Supercenter Plus $1000 to win sponsored by Performance Motor for the Valley Supply FASTRACK LMs, the RH Armstrong Memorial on August 19 (Details are forthcoming) and the Elkins Raceway Fall Festival Topless 52 for Super Lates + RR on Sept 30.

Other highlights are the Betty’s Boots SS Special on opening night paying $500 to the winner, the Rich Mountain Auto SS Special on June 10 paying $500 to the winner and the Fox’s Pizza Den of Elkins SS Special on July 15 paying $500 to the winner.

Miller’s Used Cars who sponsors the E-mods also has specials scheduled on May 27, $800 to the winner, June 24, $300 Bonus to the winner and Aug 26, $300 Bonus to the winner.

Roy’s RV Supercenter also is adding extra money to the Valley Supply FASTRACK class on June 3 with a $1000 Special.

There is also a Hornet special scheduled on July 1 paying $200 to the winner.

Many other activities including Candy Rushes , Gold Rushes, Bike Races and Pit Crew Challenges are scheduled throughout the year.

Elkins Speedway to open 2011 Season with new Promoters

4/23/2011. When the 2010 racing season closed at the Elkins Speedway speculation began as to who the promoters for the facility would be for 2011. Over the winter several names were mentioned as potential buyer and or promoter but nothing came to fruition until recently when Norm “Mac” McDougal, a well know race car owner and sponsor stepped up. Mac as everyone knows him will be the promoter with Jim Skidmore being the Track Manager.

For 2011 these two racers are in charge of the speedway as Mac owns the No 7 LM which is currently driven by Billy Holbert and sponsors several other cars including the LM driven by Josh Richards and the FASTRACK LM driven by Derek Rogers. Jimmy who will handle the daily management of the track is the son of Richard Skidmore who was one of the original members that built the speedway in 1952. The Skidmore family has been involved with the track for decades and Jimmy has performed every task at the track including prior stints as manager and promoter.

Prep work is well underway and the track will host an open practice on Friday night, April 29 for all 7 divisions (LM, Fastrack LM, E-Mods, SS, Hornets and Mini-Wedges). This Test and Tune session will last from 6PM until at least 10PM.

The regular season will kick off the following Friday night, May 6 with the Betty’s Boots Street Stock Special, paying $500 to the winner. All other classes will have regular racing. For regular nights gates open at 5PM with Hot Laps at 7:30 and racing at 8PM.

For 2011 Elkins will utilize the standard UFO Super Late Model rules for weekly racing. The Crate LMs will use the FASTRAK rules with the E-mods using AMRA rules. The SS will use the same rules as 2010 with the Hornets using the same rules as Tyler County. Mini-Wedges run under the MWRA rules.
