Your Question For Clay Campbell:
Why are the turns concrete at Martinsville Speedway and the
straightaways asphalt? |
 |
Clay's Answer:
|
Not long after
my grandfather (track founder H. Clay Earles) first paved
Martinsville Speedway in 1955, he began having problems
with the asphalt |

coming up in
the turns during the races. There was so much braking
coming into the turns and power coming off, the asphalt
would often pull up. At some point he visited a test track
that was concrete. It planted a seed. He figured the
concrete would not pull apart like asphalt. So, in 1976,
he reconstructed the bottom two lanes of the turns with
concrete. Some people laughed at him and said it wouldn’t
work…well, in over 30 years, we’ve only had to replace it
once.” |
