HAGERSTOWN READY TO GET UNDERWAY

HAGERSTOWN, MD – It’s just another week before Frank Plessinger’s Hagerstown Speedway is set to get underway with its opening program, however, the speedway has already been busy so far this year with participation in the 24th Annual Motorsports Race Car and Trade Show at Atlantic City, January 16, 17 and remains the only speedway that has taken part in every show since its inception.

The speedway was also part of the 26th Annual Dirt Trackin’ 2009 show at the York (Pa) Fairgrounds the following weekend, January 23-25.

Hagerstown is now ready to put things in gear and will kick off its season with the 24th Annual Race-A-Rama race car show held at Hagerstown’s Valley Mall February 18-20.

Mother Nature was not good to Hagerstown or neighboring tracks during 2008 and lost three of its first five scheduled shows but everything is scheduled and will run if possible.

Opening day follows the race show Saturday, the 21st, the actual Northeast Opener, and reverts back to 1998, the last time 410 sprints were on the opening program. Late models and 410 sprints (for an Octoberfest qualifying spot) appear first with the 22nd being used as a weather make-up date if needed.

That will be followed the next three Saturday’s with big and small block modified programs which will also provide Octoberfest qualifying positions for the season ending October event.

The big block modifieds will again appear for the 100-lap Super Dirt Car Series event, the first program under the lights on Saturday, April 28th, a program that was lost to weather last season.

All point events for championship race contenders will begin the following week on April 4th.

Hagerstown and Winchester Speedways have again teamed up for three combined weekend 40-lap Shootout Series events, April 11th, the second event being the 14th Annual Richard “Boney” Bonebrake Tribute on May 23rd and the final in its second season, the 2nd Annual Red Nininger Memorial scheduled for June 19th.

After having the Schetromph program lost to rain last season, the Lucas Oil Series will again make two appearances, the first on April 25th for the 50-lap 28th Annual Stanley Schetromph Classic. The series returns August 1st for another 50-lap event.

With its only date on the program for the Annual Conococheague event rained out last season and unable to be rescheduled, the World of Outlaw late models will appear twice in 2009. They again are heading up the 28th Annual Conococheague 50-lap event on May 30th and return August 15th for another special 50 lapper.

Noted for its various events honoring those who made racing great in the past, the speedway also has several non-sanctioned events remain over the holiday weekends and include the 44th Annual Johnny Roberts Memorial on July 4th. The 29th Annual Shorty Bowers Bull Durham Championship on August 29th and the 24th Annual McBee/Hays Championship on September 5th that will also be the final late model point event.
Open wheeled sprint fans will have several other events on the schedule as Hagerstown joins the Keystone Cup events with a Thursday evening special on May 21st and will again participate in the PA Speedweek Series with a July 1st Wednesday date. The final appearance will be as part of the Octoberfest program on October 24-25.

There have been speedweeks for the 410 super sprints, now let there be a late model speedweek. Hagerstown will be the first to kick off the seven night 1st Annual Late Model Speedweek on Saturday June 6th.

The 35th Annual Hub City event on September 12th will take a slight twist this season following 358 sprints appearing last year. Due to a 358 scheduling conflict this year, the (Silver Spring) super sportsman will make the trip south of the border for the first time in a number of years and star in their own 50-lap event along with the late models.

Other specials include the Ernie’s 25 Special, another top dollar event for the late models and scheduled July 11th while the pure stocks get recognition in the 14th Annual Cornett Tribute. The late model sportsman contend in the 25-lap Hoosier Daddy the same evening. The 22nd Annual Tommy Thompson Demo Derby is set for August 22nd.

On the non racing side, the Monster Truck Nationals take over the speedway in July for a three night show July 17-19 followed by the two-wheelers of the AMA Flat Track Championship for the 28th Annual Hub City Classic the following weekend, July 25th.
The enduro cars have seven events which will then be squared off in the Championship event as part of the 3rd Annual Shamrock Small Car Nationals along with big money events for the late model sportsman, pure stocks and four cylinders. The Nationals take place September 18-19.

The 22nd Annual Octoberfest 350 brings a halt to the season on October 24-25 with $10,000 going to winners in the late models, big block modifieds, super sprints and small block modifieds followed by the awards banquet set for December 12th.

JUST ANOTHER WEEK UNTIL HAGERSTOWN OPENS WITH LATE MODELS AND SPRINTS

HAGERSTOWN, MD. – Opening day of Saturday, February 21st for Frank Plessinger’s Hagerstown Speedway is right around the corner or is it?

Weather permitting, the half mile Hagerstown oval will open its 62nd season, the actual Northeast Opener, on Saturday the 21stt to a double header program of supers, super late models and super sprints.

The sprint event is the Octoberfest Qualifier, the winner securing a guaranteed starting spot in the premier October event that will close out the season.

This is the first time since 1998 that sprints have been on the opening program since the switch to modifieds. Donnie Kreitz Jr. was the winner during that final opening event. Lance Dewease won both the 1996 and 1997 events. Keith Kauffman (1992) and Steve Smith (1991) were also winners as Mother Nature was victorious the other years since 1990.

February weather hasn’t been too forgiving for late models as the past six openers have been scrapped due to the weather as John Mason was the last February winner in 2002, Rick Eckert in 1992 and 2000, Marvin Winters in 1998, Rodney Franklin, 1997 and Nathan Durboraw, 1991 and 1996.

Pit gates will open at 10:00 a.m. with the grandstands opening at 11:00 a.m. Hot laps begin at 1:00 p.m. with race time at approximately 1:30 p.m.

Should Saturday’s weather be a factor, Sunday will be used as a make up date. Times would remain the same.

For additional information, contact the speedway office at (301) 582-0640. Check the speedways website for any weather related information at: www.hagerstownspeedway.com.
