Season Opener at
Delmarva Motorsports Park shows new winners
By Buck Buckholz
The season opener on Saturday night showed the packed grandstands that its
anyone's race this year as new winners emerged from the ranks of a great field
of cars.
The 27o Micro Sprints started the night out with a great race. Twelve cars took to the track after tow heat races. Heat winners Eddie Wagner and Ryan Wozunk started behind the new car of Amanda McCloskey on the point for the Delaware start. McCloskey had a great handling car as she led the first lap and stayed in front of a racy field behind her. McCloskey had a big lead at one time, but the field bunched back up with as lapped traffic became a factor early in the race. The fifteen-lap feature went off without a caution and McCloskey flew to her win ahead of Ryan Wozunk. Wozunk and Eddie Wagner fought it out for the second spot for the whole race with Wozunk finally getting by and holding the spot. Kellie Lewis looked strong in her newly painted ride for fourth and JT Knight took fifth.
The 600 Micro Sprints had a great field of cars as well with former winner Brian
Carber showing the way to the win. Billy Thompson started on the point and took
the field into the first turn. Carber, seeing his opportunity, looked to the
outside and took the lead down the back straight. Lap four saw the field come
under caution as Stephanie Jones got into the turn two wall, almost flipping her
car over. Hank Stellar II tried to avoid and laid his car on the side, bringing
everyone to a stop. When the green flag dropped again, Carber took off. During
the race he had a full straight lead over Billy Thompson, who was racing hard
with Jon Warfield for the second spot. With Carber out front, the race behind
him heated up as Warfield tried to get around the Thompson to no avail. Joe Kay
made a return to the track with a great run in fourth and Snookie Vent worked
his way all the way from the back of the pack to take fifth.
The Pro Mod Lites saw a new winner as Scott Tessman took his very first win in
the #9 car. Tessman had to hold off 2008 Champion, Jimmy Wills, who tried every
part of the track to get around. The start of the race had Shawn Weber out
front, and the lady of racing did a great job staying in front of Tessman and
Wills. At the halfway point, Weber bobbled just a bit in turn four and allowed
Tessman to squirt under with Wills right on his bumper. Weber tried to regain
her spot, but settled for a great run in third just ahead of Tony Aguilar who
got around Donnie Ackenbrack late in the race.
Junior Mod Lites also had a new winner as Derek Magee brought his #96 car home
in the top spot. Magee also had to watch the back as Tyler Hughes applied the
pressure for the whole race, trying to take the win away. The two young racers
had the crowd on their feet several times as Hughes would look to the inside and
then outside for the spot, but Magee did a great job holding Hughes behind him.
James Hill watched from the third spot, also applying some pressure to the two
front runners, but eventually dropped back just a few feet and took third. Adam
Weber and Trent Willey moved up from the Rookie Mod Lites last year to finish in
fourth and fifth.
The Rookie Mod Lites have a new face this season, and it looks like he's there
to serve notice that he's following in his father's footsteps in Victory Lane.
Brandon Watkins had to come from the back of the pack and get to the lead,
holding it for the entire race. Josh Clark took second after a shaky start with
Craig Webb, as the two got together and Webb had to end his night early with
damage to the car. Young Chace Biron took third and Webb was the fourth place
car.
The TUSA Mod Lites put on a great race as Jimmy Wills took his first win of the
season early in the quick cars. Wills stayed out front after several cautions
kept bunching the field up. Kirk Miles had a great run in second, despite part
of the body of the car working as drag on the driver's side. Kirk had to fend
off Kevin McKinney, who had Curt Miles Jr behind him. Miles Jr. got around
McKinney and set his sights on his father, but ran out of laps and had to settle
for third, with McKinney right on his bumper. Shawn Weber had her second great
run of the night taking fifth.
The new 3/4 scale Late Models had their inaugural run for the season. Kerry King
Jr. won the heat race, but the invert put him to the back for the feature. Dylan
"The Millsboro Missile" Evans, started on the point and stayed there as the cars
stayed nose to tail for the entire race. Seemingly equally matched, the cars
raced hard in their first showing for the fans. Evans came home with the win and
King Jr. worked his way to the second spot. Long time car owner Charles Jarvis
took fourth ahead of former Pro Mod Lite driver Ray Guliver. The fans will get a
chance next week to find a name for the new division, that promises to be one of
the fan favorites.
The Delmarva Chargers were again as exciting as racing can be with an early
crash on the front straight when Darryl Brown brushed the wall in the middle of
the pack, taking three cars with him to the infield. Side by side racing for the
whole twenty-five laps kept the fans screaming for more as the front wheel drive
cars did battle. Punky Chism hung behind the pack, but finally got the lead
ahead of Kyle Tubbs and went on to win the race. It may be Chism's only win of
the year, as he sold the car on the front straight after the win. Tubbs came
home second with Chris Higgins in third and Tyler White bringing his great
looking car home in fourth. Joe Waters took fifth after he dropped out on the
last lap in the Subaru.
