READING, PA
RACING REUNION ENDS SUCCESSFUL WEEK LONG RUN AT FAIRGROUNDS SQUARE, DATES AND
PLANS IN PLACE FOR 2010 SHOW
The NAPA Auto Parts Reading Racing Reunion & Car Show presented by Lee Myles
Transmissions ended a successful week long show on Saturday night. One-hundred
and fourteen race cars of various divisions squeezed inside the walls of the
Fairgrounds Square Mall (Reading, PA) to remember the racing past, present and
future. The crowds all week were solid and again, the Friday night portion of
the show was the blockbuster. The Mall was jammed with race fans taking their
first look at the many new race cars of 2009 and at the same time, collecting
autographs from the many Legends of Racing, including stars like Gerald
Chamberlain, Jimmy Keppley, Freddy Adam, Earl Derr, Russ Smith, Russ Delp and
Bobby Braxton just to name a few. Without a doubt, the excitement and energy of
this show supports that there is still a lot of interest in local short track
racing. The impressive turnout is also a good indication that the weekly race
tracks should expect strong fan turnout.
Looking to 2010, the Car Show will return to the Fairgrounds Square Mall,
opening on Sunday, February 21 and continuing through Saturday, February 27
marking the twenty-fifth anniversary of the show and thirty-one years since the
last race at Reading. During the Friday night Reunion, Event organizers Bob and
Donna Miller announced that they are in the final negotiation stage to
transition this show into the capable hands of local publicist Brett Deyo. "Both
Donna and I really enjoyed doing this show for twenty-four years. We made so
many friends and had the opportunity to meet many of the true legends of racing.
Some of our fondest memories include our time with Tommy Hinnershitz, Al Tasnady,
Larry Dickson, Gary Bettenhausen and Mario Andretti. We feel good about our
efforts of preserving the memories of Reading and that is something we will
continue to do with increased involvement through the Reading Racing Historical
Society. It's just time to bring some new and fresh ideas to the show, and
that is something Brett Deyo can certainly deliver. I will be in the
background to help him in any way I can."
With support from Troy Wink Racing and approval by the Fairgrounds Square Mall
Management, the Miller's will be placing a plaque in the floor of the Mall,
showing the exact location of victory lane. The plan is to have the plaque in
place for next year's twenty-fifth anniversary event.
The 2009 edition of the Reading Racing Reunion was one of the most ambitious
shows in history, with plenty of activities taking place daily. A big hit during
the week was the Randy's Raceway HO race track, the display by the Reading
Racing Historical Society and the SmashMasters Demo Derby Exhibit. Several
drivers took part in Celebrity Bartending and driver interviews were presented
nightly. On Saturday, approximately fifty people took part in the "Find the
Landmarks" walking tour of the Fairgrounds. With help from the Fairgrounds
Square Mall and access to the blueprints, the group was able to locate the
Reading Victory Lane, Flag Stand, Announcers Booth, turns and backstretch as
well as the location of the Dallas French Fry Stand in the infield. The tour
lasted about one hour and covered the grounds both inside and outside the Mall.
Special car show awards were presented and winners include:
Best Appearing Go Kart- - Dakota Kohler
Best Appearing Quarter Midget- - Lauryn Seigfried
Best Appearing Micro Sprint- - -Tyler Fisher
Best Appearing Late Model- - - Chuck Schutz
Best Appearing Open Cockpit- - - Dave Shirk (ARDC)

FAIRGROUNDS SQUARE MALL PREPS FOR RACE CAR INVASION ON SUNDAY. . . . . .
NAPA AUTO PARTS READING RACING REUNION & CAR SHOW PRESENTED BY LEE MYLES TO OPEN
SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 22
For the twenty-fourth consecutive year, the Fairgrounds Square Mall in Reading,
PA will open their doors and welcome an invasion of race cars and race fans as
the NAPA Auto Parts Reading Racing Reunion & Car Show presented by Lee Myles
Transmissions begins its week long run on Sunday. The Fairgrounds Square Mall,
sits firmly over the sacred ground that was once home to one of our nation's
most popular dirt tracks. The Reading Fairgrounds Speedway, in popularity and
national exposure would equal such tracks like Knoxville and the Williams Grove
Speedway. Although the Reading Speedway no longer exists, the memories,
both good and sad, live on each year during this very special reunion.
Race cars of all divisions will be on display at the Fairgrounds Square Mall
from Sunday, February 22 to Saturday, February 28. Many of the cars on
display will be current day race cars that compete at the local weekly short
tracks. There will also be a strong presence of restored race cars. Some cars
are originals, while others are outstanding duplications of race cars that once
competed at the Reading Fairgrounds.
This show offers a boast to kickoff the start of the fast approaching 2009 local
short track racing season. Many local speedways and race teams will be handing
out their 2009 schedules with hopes of luring you to one, or many of their
action packed racing events. There are numerous weekly racing events taking
place in the northeast and in fact, you'll find some of the best racing and
strongest car counts right here.
At the local short tracks, the parking is free, you can buy a program book for
under $3 and the concession treats are usually very good and priced reasonably
for a single spectator or a family of five. Admission tickets are also priced
with a family in mind. You can arrive at a local short track thirty minutes
prior to the start of the event and find a good seat. An entire night of racing
could include ten to fifteen events and be completed on average in 3 to four
hours.
What still remains impressive, is watching one of these local heroes climb out
of their car in victory lane, with raccoon eyes from the flying dirt,
perspiration dripping from their face to the ground, to seeing the adrenalin
spiked winner climb to the roof of their car waiving the checker flag. This
is a local hero of the short track racing scene.
So this week, visit the Fairgrounds Square Mall and take a look at the vast
variety of divisions of race cars and while you're there, find the local short
track nearest to you, get a schedule and plan to take in a show in 2009. You
won't be disappointed.
Along with the many race cars on display, there is also numerous activities and
special appearances taking place every day of the show. Check out the very busy
Reading Racing Reunion & Car Show Schedule of events.
This show is presented through the support of NAPA Auto Parts and Lee Myles
Transmissions with special thanks to the Fairgrounds Square Mall. The show is
organized by Bob and Donna Miller of Speedway Promotions LLC.
The Grandview Speedway (Bechtelsville, PA 19505) is located thirty minutes from
the Fairgrounds Square Mall. Grandview Speedway is a one-third mile high
banked dirt oval presenting weekly stock racing every Saturday night from April
to October. Grandview Speedway offers numerous special events including the
high profile mid-week racing series, Thunder on the Hill, celebrating its
twentieth season in 2009. The Thunder Series host top classes like the 410
Sprints, USAC Wingless Sprints, WoO Late Models, ARDC Midgets, URC Sprints plus
Big Block Modifieds and the very popular 358 Modifieds. Location, directions

REUNION & CAR SHOW
The Reading Eagle has for a long, long time, been a very good friend and
supporter of local short track racing and in 2009, their support will take an
even stronger presence.
A special preview for the 24th Annual NAPA Auto Parts Reading Racing Reunion &
Car Show presented by Lee Myles, will be included in the Sunday, February 22
edition of The Reading Eagle. This preview will coincide with the opening day of
the week long Car Show that will take place at the Fairgrounds Square Mall on
the 5th Street Highway in Reading. The Mall replaced the one-half mile Reading
Speedway on this very property thirty years ago. Included in this preview will
be the activities and events taking place at the show, driver appearances, a
brief historical recap of racing at Reading and plenty of current day racing
news.
The Reading Racing Reunion will open on Sunday, February 22 and continue through
Saturday, February 28. At least one-hundred race cars will fill the Fairgrounds
Square Mall providing many with a sneak preview of the new race cars of 2009 and
at the same time, displaying restored and replica cars that raced at Reading
thirty to fifty years ago. It's a great mix of the new with very fond memories
of racings past. Event coordinators are also organizing a Fairgrounds walking
tour as one of the activities. Using blueprints of the property, the walking
tour will point out key locations on the property such as the grandstands, the
flag stand, the turns, the infield stage and the most photographed area, victory
lane.
Through sponsorship from Pioneer Pole Buildings Inc. and Alpine Building & Post
Supply, the Reading Eagle has announced a new column that is dedicated to local
racing in the area entitled "The Racing Roundup" that will be written by Brett
Deyo. The column will kick off on March 6 and run for thirty-nine consecutive
weeks, appearing every Friday. The column will encompass all racing in the
Reading area including dirt Modifieds, Sportsman, Late Models, URC Sprints, ARDC
Midgets, Micro-Sprints and more. The Reading Eagle will also cover all Big
Diamond and Grandview Speedway events in the coming 2009 racing season.
There is plenty to see and do including meeting representatives from many of the
local speedways and getting your copy of their 2009 schedule of events. They'll
be racing movies going on, driver interviews and opportunities all week long to
meet and greet drivers from the past, present and future.
Several drivers will also take part in Celebrity Bartending, Monday through
Thursday nights at Ronies Exeter Cafe at 9th & Exeter. Tips collect each night
will be donated to the American Cancer Society-Berks Unit. Check out the show
schedule of events for all the details.

JANUARY 11, 2009
February 22 to February 28. . . . . .
READING RACING REUNION & CAR SHOW TO REMEMBER READING FAIRGROUNDS, THIRTY YEARS
AFTER CLOSING
The twenty-fourth Annual NAPA Auto Parts Reading Racing Reunion & Car Show will
return to the Fairgrounds Square Mall for the week long show opening on Sunday,
February 22 and running through Saturday, February 28. This year's show will
have an especially special meaning, as it represents thirty years since the
closing of the Reading Fairgrounds Speedway. The Fairgrounds Square Mall now
occupies the property that was once known as the "Home of Champions", the
Reading Fairgrounds Speedway. Very few today, remember the importance of
what went on at Reading, its drivers, its owners and the extraordinary people
who filled the grandstands every weekend.
"The Reading Racing Reunion & Car Show started as a way to keep the memories of
the Reading Fairgrounds alive and strong. The drivers and car owners who
competed at Reading always seemed bigger than life, strong in character and
determination and at the same time, always accommodating to the thousands of
race fans who cheered them on week after week. In all that, we can't forget the
voice of the Reading Fairgrounds, announcer Warren Ruffner who was as much
a hero as the very drivers and owners. Last but certainly not least, is Lindy
Vicari, now deceased, the driving force in making this weekly happening exactly
that, " commented event organizer Bob Miller.
The memories of Reading will be remembered and enjoyed during the week long show
as the Reading Racing Historical Society will have a strong presence at this
event. Many drivers and owners who once competed at Reading will be on hand
along with a great selection of photos, special collectibles and many restored
race cars.
Along with the Reading memories, the Reading Racing Reunion & Car Show will
salute present day racing with a huge display of current day race cars
representing a variety of local speedways, clubs and racing organizations.
During this event, Randy's Raceway of Kutztown, PA will have an HO scale slot
car race track open to the public all week. The track is a six lane oval that
