Lathroum Denies Jackson, Takes Potomac’s "Bobby Allen Memorial”

By Doug Watson

Budds Creek, MD- Mechanicsville Maryland’s Jamie Lathroum collected his third feature win of the season in last Friday night’s 55-lap, $2000-to-win, Bobby Allen Memorial at Potomac Speedway.

Front-row starters Daryl Hills and David Williams brought the field down to the green flag with Hills taking the lead on lap-one.

Williams then got racy as he slid by to take the lead from Hills on the second circuit and appeared to have the car to beat. However, fate stepped in as Williams broke a drive shaft on the 8th lap forcing him from the event. Third starting Keith Jackson then took the top spot and looked to be well on his way to his second Potomac late model win of the season as he led effortlessly until the 54th lap. Fifth starting Lathroum had worked his way to second and as the duo came off the fourth turn for the checkered, Lathroum found a good bite up top to nip Jackson at the line by about a half a car length to take the win.

“It’s truly an honor to win this event.” Lathroum stated from victory lane. “I can remember Bobby Allen’s cars down here when I was a kid and I’m glad I could win this event for my crew chief Huey Wilcoxon, he used to work for Bobby Allen.” With his win, and David Williams misfortune, Lathroum pulled within four-points of Williams in the season point standings with just one event left on the schedule. Jackson hung on for second, early leader Hills took third, Roland Mann was fourth and Ray Kable Jr. completed the top-five. Heats for the 21 cars on hand went to Williams, Jackson and Lathroum.

“Williams Flawless in Potomac Season Opener”

By Doug Watson

Budds Creek, MD- Avenue Maryland’s David Williams was victorious in last Friday night’s forty-lap Cody Endicott memorial, as Potomac speedway kicked-off it’s 36th season of racing in Southern Maryland.

Andy Anderson and David Williams brought the field down to the initial green flag. Anderson quickly flexed his muscle as he jumped out to the early race lead. Anderson’s lead would be short-lived, however, as David Williams found the top-side of the speedway to his liking and swept by Anderson to take the race lead on the tenth circuit.

Once in the lead, Williams proved he had the dominate car as he would control the final thirty-laps of the event to score the very popular $2000 victory, his 19th career Potomac late model feature win.

“It was survival out there tonight.” Williams stated in victory lane. “There were a lot of good cars here tonight that didn’t finish the race.” Rain during the week caused rougher than usual track conditions for the event. “My guy’s gave me a great car tonight and I feel as though we’re getting our rhythm back, and it sure doe’s feel good to run up front again.”

Keith Jackson, after a lap eight yellow sent him to the rear, came charging back through the field to take runner-up honors in the main, his best-ever Potomac effort. Early race leader Andy Anderson settled for third, eighteenth starting Ray Kable Jr. collected fourth and Roland Mann drove a steady race to round out the top-five. Heats for the twenty-four cars on hand went to Roy Deese Jr., Williams and Jeremy Miller.

Kyle Nelson, a former hobby stock champion at Potomac, scored a flag-to-flag win in the sixteen-lap street stock feature for his first-ever win in the division. Chuck Bowie took second, Dale Hollidge was third, Jimmy Jessmer was fourth and defending street stock champion Ed Pope completed the top-five. Heats for the nineteen cars on hand went to PJ Hatcher, Pope and Bowie. In other action, Jason Murphy scored the win in the fifteen-lap hobby stock feature and Greg Gunter annexed the twelve-lap four-cylinder main event.
