D.J. Troutman wins The Rock-Winchester Challenge

CUMBERLAND, Md. – D.J. Troutman and four other drivers shared a slice of victory lane on Pizza Hut night Friday at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway.

Troutman was once again the big winner against The Rock's Limited Late Model and Winchester (Va.) Speedway's Semi-Late drivers for the $1,000 prize in round three of The Rock-Winchester Challenge.

Both Ryan and Wade Peer scored victories in their respective classes for the second straight race. John Whitfield became the first driver to earn a repeat win in the Sunoco Street Stock race. Bill Brown Sr. battled from last to first in the Classic Racing Series feature. All feature winners received gift cards from Pizza Hut.

In the Challenge race, Troutman marched away from the field early and fended off Allen Brannon for two late restarts to get his second  win in six days. Brannon, Dan Zechman, Matt Emerick and Matt Cosner completed the top five.

Pole-sitter Matt Sponaugle led Brannon when the green flag fell on the 30-lap feature. Troutman picked his way from fifth to third and only needed one more lap to get past Brannon on the inside of turn two.

By la p three, Troutman rolled to the inside of Sponaugle for the lead and by lap seven was already ahead by half of a straightaway. Brannon got second on lap eight, but Troutman was already out of sight when the red flag stopped the race at lap 10 for Travis Stickley.

Sponaugle's early exit on lap 20 left Zechman with third. Brannon couldn't keep up with Troutman on the subsequent restart or the last restart on lap 24. Troutman won by over three seconds.

Whitfield, the current point leader, fought by Brian Duffy in the first half of the 16-lap Street Stock feature to become the first repeat winner in eight races.

Duffy had taken the lead after a tight race with Randy Zechman in the first two laps. Whitfield was running third when two cautions slowed the field on laps two and three. He got second from Zechman on lap four and went to the front over Duffy on the next lap.

With Whitfield now setting the pace, Duffy had his hands full holding off Daryl Whetstone. Whetstone needed the better part of five laps to get around. By that time, it was too late to catch Whitfield, who came to the checkered flag by 10 car lengths.

Duffy, Tony Daniels and Zechman completed the top five.

Bill Brown Sr., who started in the 12th and final spot, needed 11 laps to work his way to the front in the 20-lap Classic Racing Series feature. He won by four car lengths over Brian Diehl, Roland Brown, Jim Crocker and Kurt Welsh.

A red flag quickly stopped the action when Al Daniels rolled off of the turn three wall. When the accident was cleaned up, Brown began to gain spots.

He worked his up to the lead pack, with Welsh, Roland Brown and Crocker before halfway. On lap 11, he passed Welsh off of turn four to get out front. Diehl picked up second four laps later but Brown was already six car lengths ahead.

Wade Peer won by making a three-wide move on lap two to get the lead over Alan Lowery II and Jimmy Moreland in the 12-lap 8- ylinder race. He had started sixth and correctly picked the inside line in turn four after Moreland jumped to the outside of Lowery.

Moreland was the only driver able to stay with Peer by the halfway point. The two drivers had a dozen car lengths over Lowery and James Mongan to decide the race with three laps to go.

Peer kept ahead of Moreland at the finish by two car lengths. Lowery, Mongan and Todd House completed the top five.

Ryan Peer started seventh and got the lead from Nathan Carpenter with three laps remaining in the 12-lap 4-Cylinder feature. Carpenter and Jeff Tuel paced the field from the outset and Peer got a good jump to the third spot.

Peer took second from Tuel on lap three and was able to catch Carpenter when the caution waved at the halfway point. He battled Carpenter on lap eight and finally cleared him in turn one on lap  nine.

Carpenter, Brandon Powell, Steve Riggleman and Tyler Alkire compl etedthe top five.

The Rock will return to action in two weeks for the final event of the  Maryland Clash with the Hagerstown Speedway for "Fill up the TankNight" on Friday, Aug. 15. Gas card giveaways will take place as well as the rescheduled kids' bike races. Street Stocks, Hobby Stocks, 4-Cylinders and 6-Cylinders will also be part of the racing program. D.J. Troutman grabs Clash win during Fair races

CUMBERLAND, Md. – Another Troutman had the winning handle on the Maryland Clash when D.J. Troutman triumphed as part of the annual Allegany County Fair races on Sunday night at The Rock, Allegany  County Speedway.

D.J. drove the same car his father, Dave, took to victory lane in first Clash race in May. He led the final five laps in the battle forthe 1,000 prize between The Rock's Limited Late Model drivers and the Hagerstown Speedway's Late Model Sportsman competitors.

In the other special event for the Fair program, David Puckett won the Randy Simpson Memorial for the Hobby Stocks worth $500, his biggest career victory. Bill Henney, Brian Ringer and Ryan and Wade Peer won features in their respective classes.

In the 30-lap Maryland Clash feature, Troutman squeezed by Jerry Bard to get the lead out of turn four. Troutman won by five car lengths over Andy Fries and pole-sitter Travis Stickley.

Troutman, who started sixth, eventually worked his way past the competition to get second after a caution on lap one. Bard, who won the second Clash event at Hagerstown earlier in July, had the lead from the outset with Troutman and Fries, who started eighth, giving chase.

Bard got his first challenge for the lead from Troutman on lap 10 butheld him off from the inside in turn two. Bard wasn't in jeopardy of losing the lead until the final caution on lap 24. On the next lap, Troutman drove to the inside and had enough room to clear Bard in a scramble with Fries and Stickley.

Bard ended up fourth with Travis Calhoun picking up fifth from Matt Sponaugle in the closing laps.

Puckett's win seemed improbable after a flat tire on the first lap sent him into the wall. With a new tire in place in time for the restart, he kept out of trouble and fought his way back to get as high as second at the halfway point of the 20-lap TC Race Cars Hobby Stock
feature.

At that time, Puckett took over the lead when the cars of Steve Fadley and Marcius VanMeter collided ahead of him in turn one.  Puckett stayedahead of a charging Fadley by two car lengths for his third victory of the season.

Jason Gilliland was able to avoid all of the incidents to get third ahead of VanMeter and Brandon LaSalle.

Henney pulled out the victory in the 16-lap Sunoco Street Stock feature by holding off Tony Daniels in another race that came down to the closing laps. Daniels tried high and low at various points in the race only to end up a couple of car lengths short at the finish.

Henney first got the lead from Daniels as the two went side by side from the drop of the green. After three cautions through lap nine, the lead cars, including the third-place car of Brian Duffy were nose to tail.

Daniels last charge failed in turn three and Duffy, Mike Warrenfeltz and John Whitfield followed Henney and Daniels across the finish line.

A caution-filled 4-Cylinder race was won by Ryan Peer on what proved to be the final lap as the race was cut short. Peer beat Jeff Tuel on the final lap following a restart on lap seven.

After a red flag incident on the prior lap that involved as many as seven cars, Peer fought off Tuel coming past the white flag. Peer was ahead when another caution flew on the final lap.

Tuel, who had led every lap up to that point, settled for the runner-up spot. Mark Seiler, Steve Riggleman and Chris Booher completed the top five.

Wade Peer won his fourth straight by avoiding a second-lap confrontation in the 6-Cylinder feature. When first-lap leader Jay Imes slowed, Ray Shepherd and Bob Imes tangled in turn four. Peer took advantage of the open lane on the outside to get by.

Peer pulled away from the rest of the field over the remaining 10 laps, winning by nearly 11 seconds over Shepherd, Bob Imes, Harmon
Crites and Robert Kuhn.

The night ended with Brian Ringer becoming a new winner in the 8-Cylinder feature with a fortunate break in the timing of a caution
flag.

Ringer, who overtook leader Jimmy Moreland's struggling car on lap seven, was saved by the caution that came out for another car moments before he would have lost the lead in a spin in turn two.

After being returned to the lead for the restart, Ringer pulled away from Alan Lowery and James Mongan to win by a straightaway. Todd House ended up fourth and Moreland rounded out the top five.

Pizza Hut night is coming up this Friday, Aug. 1 at The Rock. The second round of The Rock-Winchester Challenge will feature the Limited Late Models and their counterparts from the Winchester (Va.) Speedway for $1,000 to win. Street Stocks, 4-Cylinders, 8- ylinders and Classic  Cars will round out the program. For more information visit the speedway's web site at www.therockspeedway.com.

Sponaugle gets second win at The Rock

CUMBERLAND, Md. – Matt Sponaugle picked up his second win of the season by leading the last 13 laps of the Limited Late Model feature on Saturday night at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway.

Three others made trips to victory lane for the first time this season. Mike Harvey prevailed in the Sunoco Street Stock race. Steve Fadley won the TC Race Cars Hobby Stock event and Nathan Carpenter won he Factory Stock 4-Cylinder race. Wade Peer was able to repeat by taking the Factory Stock 6-Cylinder race for the third time.

Sponaugle, who remains in the driver's seat for his second championship, took the lead from Cory Houck in turn two. He cruised through the latter portion of the race until a caution reset the field for the final two laps. He still finished with eight car lengths to spare  over Matt Cosner.

Cosner's runner-up finish was his best on the season. He fell to fourth early as Sponaugle and Jamey Swank chased Houck. When Swank and Houck later were engaged in a hard-fought battle for second in turn two, Cosner took advantage to get second.

Houck ended up third after starting from the pole and leading the opening laps. He gave up the lead to Sponaugle in turn two on lap seven. When Swank closed in on lap 13, the two traded second until a slip-up in turn two on lap 15 dropped Houck to third. Swank headed for the pits.

Mikey Hay and Matt Emerick completed the top five.

Harvey picked up his first Street Stock win by getting around Tony Daniels just before Daniels had to head for the pits with a problem in the 16-lap Street Stock feature.

Harvey, who started on the pole, trailed Randy Zechman after the first lap. Zechman's car quit on the next lap, touching off a couple of spins as the field tried to avoid him on the backstretch. Harvey led Daniels for the restart and Daniels drove low in turn four to get the lead.

Daniels led by as much as 12 car lengths until Harvey took over on lap nine. Harvey won by 10 car lengths over Rick Wright, John Whitfield, Roy Whitfield and Kevin Deremer.

Fadley charged to the front when the Hobby Stock race went green, sticking to the bottom in a three-wide race into turn three with Joe Railey and R.T. Troutman. The move paid off when Fadley pulled ahead out of turn four.

Brandon LaSalle, David Puckett and Marcius VanMeter all had turns in the second spot to make a run at Fadley. VanMeter couldn't stay with Fadley for the last lap and ended up second. Puckett and LaSalle were third and fourth while Railey got the fifth spot.

Wade Peer won the 6-Cylinder feature by getting by Ray Shepherd with two laps remaining. Shepherd had led the first five laps by a healthy margin until Peer, who started fifth, eventually caught up.

After a couple of cautions on laps 8-9, Peer took his shot at the lead on the outside in turn two. Peer drove away for the victory as Shepherd struggled to get to the finish with what appeared to be a flat tire. Joe Readd, Matt Stickley and Harmon Crites completed the top five.

A wild start in the 4-Cylinder race sorted out with Ryan Peer and Jason Riggleman setting the pace over Carpenter. Peer lost a wheel one lap later and Riggleman led Carpenter and Brandon Powell on the restart.

Carpenter took the lead in turn four the next time around. He was in command for the rest of the race while the nearly all the positions in the top ten changed hands repeatedly.

Jeff Tuel climbed from 17th to third and got by Dwain Rhodes on lap seven to get second. Rhodes ended up third while Powell, who had  to pit for a flat tire on lap six, worked his way back to fourth. Jay Fry completed the top five.

Brandon Inglish lost a top-five finish on the last lap with a spin and others, including previous feature winner Mike Lauffer, had to head to the pits early.

The annual Allegany County Fair races will be held on Sunday, July 27 starting at 7 p.m. Rides open at 2 p.m. Two special events will be part of the program. The rescheduled second race of The Rock-Hagerstown Clash will offer up $1,000 to win for the Limited Late Models. The Hobby Stocks will be competing for $500 to win the second Randy Simpson Memorial. Pencil wins Shultz Memorial at The Rock

CUMBERLAND, Md. – Jack Pencil was on his way to get the checkered flag when a caution put the brakes on his victory celebration.

Pencil had to hold off D.J. Myers on a one-lap dash to the finish to win the Dwane Shultz Memorial on Friday night at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway.

Two first-time winners on the season were among the other five winners. Jim Sayler won the Street Stock event and James Mongan won the Factory Stock 8-Cylinder race. Repeat winners were Marcius VanMeter, Wade Peer and Mike Lauffer.

Pencil's win came after leading 23 of the 25 laps for the Super Late Model feature. He got the lead on lap two from Randy Burkholder  afterstarting fourth.

Pencil led by as much as a dozen car lengths through lap 17 and cleanly cleared a couple of lapped cars before getting the white flag.

The late caution put Myers, who had worked by Burkholder on lap 16, on his bumper. When the race resumed for the final lap, Myers got a good run on the bottom through turn two but couldn't stay close enough to Pencil for the finish.

Sayler picked up bonus money for a prior win by taking the checkers in the Street Stock 16-lap feature. Tony Daniels kept the race competitive for the lead until lap nine. Sayler eventually pulled away by more than a dozen car lengths.

Daniels ended up second. John Whitfield edged Randy Zechman for third at the finish line. Zechman made a late charge after starting 10th.  Polesitter Rick Wright was fifth.

VanMeter won the TC Race Cars Hobby Stock feature for the fourth time this season by getting around Steve Fadley and David Puckett in a hard-fought race for the lead through lap six.

Fadley had taken the lead from Joe Railey on lap two as VanMeter and Puckett worked their way up from the sixth and seventh starting spots, respectively.

Puckett first got by VanMeter for second then VanMeter retook the spot and went to the outside of Fadley coming off of turn four on lap six.

VanMeter led Puckett the rest of the way to finish. Fadley, Railey and R.T. Troutman completed the top five.

Lauffer got his second win of the season when leader Jeff Tuel had to head for the pits when his hood came loose on lap seven. Tuel led from lap two up to that point.

Lauffer won comfortably over Scott Krumanacker while Tuel fought his way back to third on the final lap. Twelfth-starting Dwain Rhodes and Steve Riggleman finished fourth and fifth.

Mongan won for the first time by hanging on to the lead as his car sputtered on the last two laps of the 12-lap 8-Cylinder race.

Mongan moved to second behind leader Jamie Mills on the first lap and had to fight off Alan Lowery to get the lead following a caution on lap two.

Once in the lead, Mongan had to only keep his car running to get the victory. He had 10 car lengths to spare over Lowery. Jimmy Moreland was third. Randy Peer and Brian Ringer rounded out the top five.

The 12-lap Factory Stock 6-Cylinder race ended with Wade Peer once again out front, leading by nearly a half of a lap over Ray Shepherd. Jay Imes finished third while Derek Iser was fourth and Harmon Crites was fifth.

The next race is scheduled for Saturday, July 12 with Limited Late Models, Street Stocks, Hobby Stocks, 4-Cylinders and 6-Cylinders. The date was changed from July 13. For more information visit the speedway's web site at www.therockspeedway.com.

CUMBERLAND, Md. – Wet weather continued to be the big winner in 2008, taking away another race on Friday night at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway.

Zechman gets first Late Model win at The Rock

CUMBERLAND, Md. – Dan Zechman, David Puckett, Daniel Cornman and Wade and Ryan Peer took victories on Sunday night The Rock, Allegany County Speedway.

For Zechman, his first Limited Late Model win at The Rock came after he led 19 of 20 laps. Puckett's win was his second in the TC Race Cars Hobby Stock division while Cornman ended up in victory lane after a last-minute decision to get behind the wheel of his Sunoco Street Stock. The father-son duo of Wade and Ryan Peer won the Factory Stock races on Father's Day.

The races were rescheduled due to Friday night's thunderstorms and drivers were greeted with sunny skies for the fifth regular season event of the 2008 season.

Zechman, who started fourth, took the lead after Travis Calhoun's car stumbled out of turn four on lap one. Zechman eventually led by as much as 2.5 seconds over Mike Duck. He saw his lead dwindle to about seven car lengths before the checkered flag.

Four cautions in the event all came before lap four and the field sorted out through the remainder of the race with Zechman, Duck, D.J.
Troutman, Jamey Swank and Steve Bard in the top five.

Cornman, the defending class champion for the Street Stocks, triumphed in his first start of the year by getting the lead on lap four. Cornman started fourth, took third at the outset and moved up to second when early leader Chris Chamberlain spun out in turn two.

While Darryl Whetstone assumed the lead, Cornman got it two laps later. When Whetstone bobbled in turn one, Cornman took advantage to get underneath of him.

Five more cautions shuffled the field, including the final one for the second-place car of Brian Duffy, who was attempting to chase down the leader. John Whitfield ended up second. Jim Sayler, Tony Daniels and Chamberlain finished third through fifth.

Puckett, who started fifth, worked his way to the front of the Hobby Stock field in two laps. He ended up with the lead when Jason Gilliland went wide in turn three and crashed in turn four.

After the restart, the top four, including Bill Replogle, Derrick Hinish and Jimmy Sacco, were nose to tail. Replogle made another run
on lap seven but Puckett held him off in turn four.

Replogle eventually fell out with engine problems on lap 11 and Puckett cruised to victory by three-quarters of a straightaway over  Sacco. Hinish, Replogle and Herb Hilliard were credited with third through fifth in the finishing order.

Ryan Peer won the 4-Cylinder race for the third time after he got around Dwain Rhodes and Ed Vogel on the second lap. Peer pulled away  from the rest of the field until Jeff Tuel closed his lead down to a margin of victory of five car lengths.

Tuel worked his way to second on lap eight and Brandon Inglish looked to have a solid third-place finish until a last-lap crash left him 12th. Vogel also had problems by lap seven and retired.

Jason Thompson, Steve Riggleman and Cindy Rhodes completed the top five.

Wade Peer ended up in victory lane for the first time since 1999 by winning the 6-Cylinder feature to conclude the night. He led the final five laps after taking the lead from Bob Imes.

Imes got the early jump on the high side over Peer, Matt Stickley and Harmon Crites. Peer closed in and first tried the bottom without success to pass Imes. For lap seven, Peer switched to the high side and pushed past Imes in turn two.

Imes ultimately spun and finished fourth. Stickley was second over Crites.

The Rock will continue racing on Friday, June 20 at 7:15 p.m. Promoter Rick Jones has announced additional possible winner's purse increases and a date change for the July 13 race to Saturday, July 12. For more information visit the speedway's web site at www.therockspeedway.com.

Troutman scorches field at The Rock

CUMBERLAND, Md. – D.J. Troutman, Jimmy Moreland and Marcius VanMeter scored repeat wins in their respective classes on Sunday evening at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway.

The three drivers, along with new winners Brian Duffy and Jeff Tuel, fought off the competition and the sweltering heat.

Troutman dominated for the second time in three races in the Allegany Scrap Limited Late Model race. He won by well over half of a track after starting on the outside front row.

Matt Sponaugle picked his way up to second by lap six but couldn't keep pace with the leader. Dan Zechman, Travis Stickley and Matt
Cosner completed the top five.

Moreland won his third Factory Stock 8-Cylinder race in a row over Wade Peer, Matt Stickley, Joe Rodgers and Alan Lowery.

Moreland, who started seventh, and Peer tangled for the lead with two laps to go. The incident occurred as the leaders came up on the car of Joe Readd and Moreland took the blame after the race.

Peer had led the race from lap three after getting the lead from Stickley.

VanMeter got off to a fast start in claiming his third TC Race Cars Hobby Stock feature win. He started at the back of the field and took advantage of an opening on the high side as the race went green to pick up four spots.

From that point, he tracked down leader Steve Fadley on the second lap to gain the top spot. VanMeter won by nearly two seconds over Fadley, Jason Gilliland, David Puckett and Jimmy Sacco.

Following a lengthy intermission to soak the track, Duffy won the first feature of the night for his first win since the 2005 season. By winning the Sunoco Street Stock feature, Duffy collected a bonus from winning a feature the previous night at another speedway.

Rick Wright was the runner-up for the second straight week. Wright nearly caught Duffy by the halfway point but fell back until the  first caution with three laps to go.

Duffy prevailed by three car lengths over Wright, Chris Chamberlain, John Whitfield and Randy Zechman.

Tuel made his return to the speedway following a nasty crash in April and hung on after a few tense moments at the end of the Factory Stock 4-Cylinder feature.

Tuel, who led every lap, was nearly collected following a bumping incident in the second turn with two laps to go. He went on to win by eight car lengths over Ryan Peer, Dwain Rhodes, Tyler Alkire and Steve Riggleman.

The Rock will be back in action on Friday, June 13 with Limited Late  Models, Street Stocks, Hobby Stocks, 4-Cylinders and 6-Cylinders. For more information about The Rock, visit the speedway's web site at www.therockspeedway.com.

Dave Troutman wins Maryland Clash opener

CUMBERLAND, Md. – Dave Troutman led the entire distance to get the win in the opener for the Maryland Clash on Friday night at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway.

The five other classes in action produced four new winners as Bryan Kerns won the Sunoco Street Stock race, David Puckett won the TC Race Cars Hobby Stock race, Brian Diehl won the Classic Car race and Ray Shepherd won the Factory Stock 6-Cylinder race. Ryan Peer scored his second win in the Factory Stock 4-Cylinders.

The Bud Light No. 7 that D.J. Troutman drove to victory three weeks ago carried Dave to another resounding win as the Clash between The Rock and Hagerstown Speedway finally got underway with clear skies.

In the fifth attempt—two other dates at each track were met with  rain—to kick off the mini-series for the Limited Late Models and Late Model Sportsman cars, Troutman had the competition covered throughout the night.

He won his heat race, started on the pole and led comfortably throughout to claim the $1,000 prize at the end of 30 laps. Six cautions and a few lapped cars kept the second-place car of Andy Fries, the two-time Hagerstown champion, within sight.

Fries made up some distance when Troutman approached a pack of cars at halfway, but lost his momentum when he was unable to clear  traffic himself. Troutman was strong on the restarts and went on to win by a half of a straightaway.

Tyler Armstrong and Matt Sponaugle waged a battle for a position in the top five for much of the race. The two drivers spent laps 9-10 side by side for the fifth spot. Sponaugle temporarily held on. As Kyle Lear and Scott Palmer had problems, Sponaugle and Armstrong moved up third and fourth.

Armstrong finally cleared Sponaugle with four laps to go and Terry Flaherty rounded out the top five over Jerry Bard and Jamey Swank.

Kerns was a joyful winner after taking the No. 43 car built for his father to victory lane in the 16-lap Street Stock feature. Kerns started from the pole and went on to win by two seconds over Rick Wright, Jerry Robinson, Randy Zechman and Randy Wible.

Kerns led by as much as a half straightaway when the first of four cautions came out for a spin by Wible. Kerns went on uncontested through the other cautions.

Wright got around Zechman with two laps remaining for second and held off Robinson to the checkered flag.

Puckett picked up a hard-fought victory in the 15-lap Hobby Stock feature over Marcius VanMeter and Steve Fadley. The win was  Puckett's first.

He took over the lead with a move on the outside of Fadley in turn three on lap two. VanMeter, who started seventh, closed in to make it a two-car battle to the finish.

VnMeter tried the high side to get around Puckett. After running side by side throughout lap six, Puckett prevailed. VanMeter stayed within a car length but couldn't make another move before the finish. Fadley, R.T. Troutman and Jimmy Sacco completed the top five.

Peer, a rookie driver, put himself in contention with five laps to go. He won the 4-Cylinder race by 10 car lengths over Rob Prinkey.

Prinkey set the pace through lap seven. Peer, who started sixth, had climbed up to second by lap three. After racing side by side for the entire lap, Peer fought off Prinkey in turn four for the lead.

Dave Friend Jr., who started 14th, ended up third. Dwain Rhodes and Jason Riggleman completed the top five.

Diehl led the entire 15 laps of the Classic Car feature for the win over Joe Snodgrass. The top five cars broke away early before cautions began to slow the pace. The rest of the top five changed hands among Snodgrass, Pete Neal, Al Daniels and Brooks Coleman.

Snodgrass eventually secured second on lap seven. He trailed Diehl to the finish by five car lengths. Neal held off Daniels until lap 13 when Daniels spun under green and dropped to the rear. Bill Brown Jr. and Coleman completed the top five.

Shepherd managed to pick up the win in the inaugural 6-Cylinder race despite a sour engine.

Shepherd led Wade Peer through lap nine when his engine picked up a miss and began to smoke. Despite the failure, Shepherd continued on, caught Peer with one lap to go and recaptured the lead.

Peer, Bob Imes, Matt Stickley and Jay Imes completed the top five.

The Rock will be back in action on Sunday, June 8 with Limited Late Models, Street Stocks, Hobby Stocks, 4-Cylinders and 8- ylinders. For more information about The Rock, visit the speedway's web site at  www.therockspeedway.com.

Troutman tops The Rock-Winchester Challenge field

May 3, 2008

CUMBERLAND, Md. – Except for running low on fuel near the finish, D.J. Troutman otherwise dominated the 30-lap feature on the first night of The Rock-Winchester Challenge on Friday at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway.

Troutman led 26 laps and averted his only roadblock to the checkered flag—fuel mileage. He had to be pushed into victory lane after running low on fuel. He earned $1,000 for the win between The Rock's Allegany Scrap Limited Late Models and the Semi-Lates from the Winchester (Va.) Speedway.

The Rock's drivers fared well against their Winchester counterparts by taking the top seven spots. Dan Zechman, Jamey Swank, Travis Stickley and Matt Sponaugle completed the top five. Matt Cosner and Jimmy Iser finished sixth and seventh. Winchester drivers Allen Brannon and C.J.Brown were eighth and ninth. Matt Emerick completed the top 10.

Sponaugle, the pole-sitter, led until lap three over Troutman. Troutman took the lead in turn two underneath Sponaugle. From that point, Troutman built a steady lead over Sponaugle, Brannon and Emerick through the halfway point.

A series of cautions between laps 15-19 slowed the pace and knocked Emerick out early. As the finish approached, Sponaugle began to lose ground. Brannon briefly claimed second but broke three laps short of the finish. Zechman, Swank and Stickley eventually got by Sponaugle in the top five.

The other four feature events were competitive until the final laps. John Whitfield took the win in the Sunoco Street Stock race on the final lap. Marcius VanMeter and Jimmy Moreland won their second straight in the TC Race Cars Hobby Stocks and Factory Stock 8-Cylinders, respectively. Jason Thompson won his first-ever feature in the Factory Stock 4-Cylinders.

Whitfield chased Mike Warrenfeltz for 15 of the 16 laps, claimed the lead when Warrenfeltz had a problem on the right rear and held off Randy Zechman to the final corner.

Warrenfeltz could never get away from Whitfield and Zechman made it a three-car race at the halfway point. When Warrenfeltz was forced out of the race coming to the white flag, Zechman went side by side with Whitfield into the final turn.

Whitfield prevailed by half of a car length and Rick Wright, Ray Sheetz and Roy Whitfield completed the top five.

VanMeter won the 15-lap TC Race Cars Hobby Stock feature again by taking over the lead from Steve Fadley. Fadley lost a tire with three laps remaining. The two drivers had been locked in a three-way battle for much of the race along with David Puckett.

VanMeter, who started sixth, went on to win by a straightaway over  Puckett, R.T. Troutman, Scott Jones and Fadley.

Thompson started second and assumed the lead after a first-lap, multi-car crash in turn two reset the field of the 12-lap 4- cylinder feature.

He led by as many as 12 car lengths until a late caution allowed the competition to arrive once again. When the race resumed, Thompson stayed ahead of Jason Riggleman and Rick Jenkins to win by five car lengths. Nick Iski and Jim Kennell rounded out the top five.

Moreland won his second straight 8-Cylinder feature by taking to the high side of the speedway against Wade Peer following a restart on lap four. Moreland went on to win by five car lengths over Peer.

Matt Stickley finished third after overcoming a flat tire. Todd House survived a brush with the backstretch wall to finish fourth and Rel Breedlove ended up fifth.

Racing continues Friday, May 9 at The Rock with Limited Late Models, Street Stocks, Hobby Stocks, 4-Cylinders and 6- ylinders. Kids' bike races will also be held. Racing begins at 7 p.m.

Sponaugle victorious at The Rock

April 18, 2008

CUMBERLAND, Md. – Matt Sponaugle led the entire distance for the Allegany Scrap Limited Late Model win to start the regular season on Friday night at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway.

In other feature action, Randy Zechman picked up the win in the Sunoco Street Stocks. Marcius VanMeter took the honor in the TC Race Cars Hobby Stocks. Ryan Peer was a new winner for the Factory Stock 4-Cylinders and Jimmy Moreland was declared the winner for an 8-Cylinder race that reached a frightening conclusion.

Sponaugle broke away from the field after taking the lead on the initial start of the 20-lap Limited Late Model feature. Matt Emerick gave chase after emerging with second from a shuffle in turn two.

After lap four, the race went without a caution. Sponaugle led by as much as half of a straightaway before giving up some ground to Emerick in the closing laps. Sponaugle crossed the finish line with about eight car lengths to spare over Emerick.

Daniel Cornman held off Jamey Swank to finish third. Travis Stickley rounded out the top five.

Zechman contended with John Whitfield on a restart on lap eight to get the 16-lap Street Stock win. Zechman led from the start and held off Whitfield on the backstretch following the race's only caution.

Whitfield stayed within a couple of car lengths before Zechman got away to a six car length lead at the conclusion. Behind Whitfield, Rick Wright, Roy Whitfield and Justin Bonnett rounded out the top five.

Hotly contested racing up front continued in the Hobby Stock class. In that 15-lap event, VanMeter turned back a couple of challenges from Steve Fadley in the final four laps. VanMeter earned the victory by a car length over Fadley, David Puckett, Joe Railey and R.T. Troutman.

Puckett finished fourth after running as high as second. A broken  wheel cost him several spots on lap 11.

The restart provided the excitement between VanMeter and Fadley. Fadley jumped to the inside of VanMeter in turns one and two but VanMeter prevailed on the backstretch to retain the lead.

Peer picked up his first-ever win at the speedway by a half of a straightaway over the 4-Cylinder field in the 12-lap race. He raced to the lead on the backstretch of the opening lap after starting fourth.

The rest of the top five spots shuffled frequently behind Peer. His biggest threat came from 15th-starting Nathan Carpenter on a restartat lap four. Peer recaptured the lead on the backstretch and Carpenter fell out two laps later.

Brandon Powell ended up second after a tight battle with third-place finisher Dwain Rhodes. Jason Thompson finished fourth and Daniel Wratchford worked his way back into fifth by recovering from a couple of problems earlier in the race.

The 8-Cylinder race took a shocking turn on the final turns for driver  Ray Shepherd. After powering into the lead on the final lap of the2-lap feature, Shepherd's car veered hard into the turn three wall.  The force blasted Shepherd over the wall.

Luckily, he emerged from the car and reported only some soreness after the crash. With the turn of events coming on the final lap, Moreland was awarded the win for the crossing the finish line over Jason Imes, James Mongan and Alan Lowery.

The Rock hosts the first round of the Maryland Clash for Limited Late Model and Late Model Sportsman cars from the Hagerstown Speedway on Friday, April 25. The race is set for 30-laps and pays $1,000 to win. The bonus, sponsored by A&C Racing Engines, will be calculated based on the three rounds at each track.

The Street Stocks, Hobby Stocks, 4-Cylinders, 6-Cylinders and Classic Cars are also scheduled to compete. Warm-ups are scheduled for 6:45 p.m. For more information, visit the speedway's web site at www.therockspeedway.com.

Clanton claims MACS opener at The Rock

April 13, 2008

CUMBERLAND, Md. – Shane Clanton fought off Billy Decker to claim the 2008 Mid-Atlantic Championship Series (MACS) opener at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway on Saturday night.

Clanton, of Locust Grove, Ga., won $5,000 for the 50-lap event. In other action, Chad McClellan captured the $1,000 Limited Late Model prize and Michael Lauffer won the Factory Stock 4-Cylinder feature.

In blustery conditions, Clanton paced the field for much of the race. He briefly lost the lead to Decker on lap 37, and then regained it for the final 11 laps. Clanton had an eight car length edge at the finish.

Decker, of Unadilla, N.Y., and Tim Fuller, of Edwards, N.Y., finished second and third. Parkersburg, W.Va., driver Mike Balzano and Gettysburg, Pa., driver Jeremy Miller rounded out the top five.

The win was the first ever on the series and at the speedway for Clanton, who regularly travels the country with the World of Outlaws tour.

Clanton headed off Decker in turn one for the lead at the start. Three cautions in the first eight laps kept the field close but Clanton pulled away by a dozen car lengths between the third caution and lap 14. Decker and Chub Frank, who earlier moved up to third over Balzano, closed in as Clanton approached the back of the field.

After the fourth caution on lap 21, Clanton couldn't shake off Decker. The two lead cars were nose to tail on lap 31 when they began to catch traffic again.

Decker made his first move on lap 34 but Clanton held on. With Frank now joining the battle, Decker took the lead on lap 37 on the  low side in turn three.

Clanton regained the lead on lap 38 by taking to the high side while Decker tried to negotiate traffic in turn four. Frank fell out of third on lap 42 to bring out the final caution and Fuller got by Balzano on the restart to set the field for the finish.

Rounding out the top 10 were Gary Stuhler, Shannon Babb, Jason Covert, Rick Eckert and Ricky Elliott. Forty cars were on hand.

McClellan shot in front of Mike Shoemaker on lap four and led the distance to claim the 20-lap Limited Late Model feature.

McClellan, who started fourth, jumped around Tim Smith and Jamey Swank for second after one lap. Shoemaker, the pole-sitter, gave way to McClellan on lap three but couldn't hold him off again on lap four.

McClellan went on to win by six car lengths. He led by as many as a dozen car lengths until Shoemaker caught up in traffic after halfway. The race went without a caution after lap two when Swank and Smith spun at both ends of the track.

Matt Sponaugle ended up third after starting sixth. Eighth starter Mike Duck was fourth and Travis Stickley completed the top five.

In the Factory Stock 4-Cylinder feature, Lauffer started sixth and gained the top spot from Jeff Tuel on lap three. One lap later,  Tuel lost a wheel and flipped wildly in turn three to end his night.

With the loss of Mark Seiler one lap earlier, Lauffer was left out front to hold off Ryan Peer for the remainder of the 12-lap feature. Lauffer went on the finish out the race a couple of car lengths ahead of Peer.

Brandon Powell worked his way up to third only to lose six spots when his car slowed on the last lap. Dave Friend Jr. ended up third. Nick Iski, who started 13th, ended up fourth and Nathan Carpenter completed the top five.

The Rock will begin its regular season for Limited Late Models, Street Stocks, Hobby Stocks, Factory Stock 4-Cylinders and 8- ylinders on Friday, April 18. Warm-ups are scheduled for 6:45 p.m. For more information, visit the speedway's web site at  www.therockspeedway.com.

The Rock hosts MACS opener Saturday

April 6, 2008

CUMBERLAND, Md. – The Mid-Atlantic Championship Series (MACS) picks up where it left off when the new season begins on Saturday at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway.

The Western Maryland Open 50 gets the season started for the both the MACS tour and the speedway. Super Late Model drivers will be competing for $5,000 to win the feature. The Limited Late Models will be competing for $1,000 to win and the Factory Stock 4-Cylinders will share the opening night of racing.

The 2007 MACS tour ended with Jason Covert celebrating a win on the first night and his second series championship on the final night of The Big Kahuna at The Rock last October. Covert leads the list of 2008 championship hopefuls and a new crop of rookies.

Drivers expected to compete include several familiar with The Rock: Jack Pencil, Chuck Clise, Greg Fetters, Mike Altobelli Jr. and Ron Delano Jr. The latter three are competing with Thomas Baker, Coleby Frye, Russell King, Donnie Lingo Jr. and Tony Lombardi for MACS Rookie of the Year in 2008.

A former winner in the Renegade DirtCar Series at The Rock, Mike Balzano, and Pennsylvania drivers Alex Ferree, Nick Dickson and Matt Lux round out the pre-season list of championship contenders.

Pit gates open at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The grandstands open at 3 p.m. Warm-ups are scheduled for 5-5:30 p.m. Qualifying for the MACS will follow before heats. General admission is $25 for adults and pit admission is $35.

The race is the first of 22 nights at The Rock in 2008. Other highlights on the schedule include two mini-series: The Rock/Hagerstown Clash, a trio of $1,000 to win races in conjunction with the Hagerstown Speedway for Limited Late Models and the two Rock/Winchester (Va.) Speedway Challenge races. Bonus money is up for grabs at the conclusion of those events.

The annual Allegany County Fair race is scheduled for July 27. The Independent Racing Series (IRS) will make its first appearance on Aug. 22 for $5,000 to win for Super Late Models.

The Big Kahuna VIII will conclude the MACS season once again on Oct 2-4. The race will pay $12,000 to win this year, the second-largest payday ever at The Rock.

Finally, the 6th Western Md. Nationals ends The Rock's season by offering $2,500 to win for the Limited Late Models on Oct. 23- 5.
