HAGERSTOWN’S SPRINT SPEEDWEEK VICTORY TO SHEPARD
Hagerstown, Md. – After Jeff Shepard and Fred Rahmer put on a driving clinic
with the lead being swapped at least eight times following a 3rd lap restart.
Shepard retook the point on lap 20 and drove away to pick up the Wednesday’s
$5,000 triumph during Night 4 of the 18th Annual Cindy Rowe Auto glass
Pennsylvania Sprint Speedweek. It was the first ever win at Frank Plessinger’s
Hagerstown Speedway for Shepard, of Upperco, MD as he held a 1.63 second
advantage on Rahmer at the line.
“We were on our way here and I thought to myself, ‘I’ve never won at this race
track.’ It’s always bit me,” said the driver of the John and Pee Wee Zemaitis
Zemco sprint car. “I’ve ended up in the infield, out of the park, you name it.”
One thing for certain, the race fans got to see sprints in action, especially at
the front with sliders on every turn until Shepard closed in.
“I don’t think there’s a better racer out there than Fred Rahmer. To get a
chance to race wheel to wheel with him is priceless,” Shepard said. “We were
close. That was the most fun I’ve had in a while. He was good, no question about
it. Lapped traffic plays a hell of a role. I though he was going to pass us
back.”
And then late in the race, Shepard’s engine began showing a whisp of smoke.
“We blew the motor up with about eight laps to go and I thought for sure he was
going to get back around us but the car was good. We worked on it all night,” he
said. ”We didn’t get a good start at the beginning. I did some adjustments under
the yellow inside the car but pretty much determination was what it was.”
With a damp humid night, the track was a while in getting ready but it was
smooth and quick. The top 28 sprints were separated by only .964 seconds in time
trials. For the third straight night, Rahmer was the quick one with a lap of
15.268 and then pulled a number eight inversion.
Shepard began from the pole but Mark Smith powered off the top of turn two to
take command with Rahmer to fourth by the first circuit and took third from Doug
Esh by the second.
The red was displayed on lap three when Doug Esh ended on his side in turn four
and Keith Kauffman got a flat tire out of the deal when he made contact.
On the restart, the show began with Rahmer under, then Shepard back in front,
and more of the same lap after lap until Rahmer finally secured the spot and
broke free on lap nine with Smith and Todd Shaffer trailing Shepard.
Rahmer closed on traffic as Shepard quickly arrived on the scene and became a
challenger again. He blew by Rahmer on the 20th lap and later started showing
some smoke from the car. His lead of 2.2 seconds on lap 27 slowed to 1.63 in the
final circuits.
Shepard’s celebration ended by saying, “Fred’s hard to pass….he came from
eighth…he had a fast race car, but I have two words, Fred WHO!”
Shaffer got by Smith for the third spot on 20th while Brian Leppo picked off
several spots in the closing laps to move into fifth on the final circuit.
Chad Layton was sixth after coming from 16th with defending winner, Lance
Dewease next while Cody Darrah, Brian Paulus and 19th starter Stevie Smith
completed the top ten. Heats went to Layton, S.Smith and Esh while Craig Keel
was the B Main winner.
The speedway returns to action Saturday evening with a full night of racing
entertainment. The 1st Annual Red Nininger Memorial Shootout II 40-Lap Late
Model which is postponed from June 14 the will take center stage with the 13th
Annual Cornett Tribute 20-lap event for the pure stocks as the premier event for
that popular division. The Late Model Sportsman and a postponed 30 lap Enduro
Dash are also included on the program.

ANDERSON SCORES HAGERSTOWN’S POSTPONED ROBERTS MEMORIAL
Hagerstown, Md. – Losing out to the weather on Saturday night, Hagerstown
Speedway used it’s scheduled rain date on Sunday evening and got the show in….
just barely, with Andy Anderson coming away with his first ever victory in the
prestigious 43rd Annual Johnny Roberts Memorial 50 lap event for the Cindy Rowe
Auto Glass late models.
Starting sixth, Anderson, of Martinsburg, WV took the lead from J.T. Spence on
the 13th circuit and held a six eight length lead until arriving at the back of
the field when Spence closed the gap and gave Anderson a real workout the final
ten laps. Anderson won by .72 seconds to become the ninth different winner this
season.
“I was better than him there in the beginning when I got by him,” Anderson said.
“The longer we went, the top started going away on me, I guess. I couldn’t get
through one and two that good. I knew he was on the bottom and my guys were
telling me to run low. We got into lapped traffic and I tried to box him in but
he must have got through there pretty fast.”
The victory was also sweet for Anderson in a new deal he just put together in
the past several weeks.
“This is my own car. I’ve won in everything I’ve been in. I was just hoping I’d
get one in my own car,” he said.
Rain fell just north of the speedway during the program and within 15 minutes of
completion of the fireworks display, another rain shower arrived at the track.
In other racing, Hagerstown’s Mike Warrenfeltz took the victory in the Ernie’s
Auto Enterprises pure stocks with a half length win over Darrin Younker.
Spence started third and stuck his car along the inside to snatch the lead away
from pole setter Steve Gibney and immediately begin to stretch out his lead over
the field. Anderson passed Frankie Plessinger for second just before the caution
flag waved on lap seven and erasing Spence’s nearly six second lead.
Darryl Hills took over the third spot following the restart while 11th starter
Roy Deese Jr. advanced into fourth but was overtaken by six time event winner
and 12th starter, Gary Stuhler on the 16th circuit.
Anderson continued to hold the edge on Spence with a caution on lap 23 when Paul
Crowl spun with a flat left rear. Just before the caution, Stuhler slowed and
was retiring to the pits and overheating engine from a small hole in the
radiator.
Following the restart, Anderson again took off with Spence trailing by several
lengths as Anderson moved into lapped traffic on the 37th lap with Spence
closing. Behind them, Billy Wampler had passed Deese and Hills and was also
closing on the front runners.
Spence was on Anderson’s bumper by the 45th lap and began his assault which
ended on the 47th when Wampler’s engine erupted on the front stretch.
Anderson was pedal down the final three circuits to score the win over Spence
and Deese.
“I wasn’t even going to come back tonight,” Anderson said. “I could hardly sleep
thinking about all I had to change on this thing and then we came back. They all
made fun of me at the restaurant last night calling me ‘Slow Ride’, so I changed
it all around today and it worked out.”
Ninth starter, Jim Yoder ended fourth and Hills completed the top five. Alan
Sagi came from the 15th spot to finish sixth while David Williams, Ronnie
DeHaven Jr., from 17th, Les Hare, from 19th and Jamie Lathroum, from 22nd
rounded out the top ten. Lathroum picked up the Ernie’s Auto Enterprises hard
charger award.
Wampler, Plessinger, Deese Jr. and Anderson were the heat winners for the 35
entries with D.J. Myers topping the B main.
The pure stocks took off with three and four wide racing during the first
several laps with Brian Swigert leading the first two until Wayne Hawbaker got
past. Warrenfeltz advanced from ninth and took over second on lap four. He
challenged Hawbaker until getting past on the eighth round while Darrin Younker
was using the top line to come from 11th. He moved into second on lap 11 but his
rhythm ended on lap 13 with a yellow flag.
On the restart, Warrenfeltz opened a several car cushion which Younker cut into
on the final lap but ended a half length short. Previous week’s winner and point
leader, Dale Hollidge ended third with Hans Stamberg and Steve Lowery completing
the front five.
Heats went to Stamberg, Bobby Taylor and Swigert while Dave Stouffer Jr. was the
B main winner.
The speedway returns to action with a special Wednesday program, the fourth
night of the Cindy Rowe Auto Glass Pennsylvania Sprint Speedweek 2008 events
along with a special exhibition show featuring the Eastern Museum of Motor
Racing vintage racers.

HAGERSTOWN BEATS THE RAIN AND ENDS NIGHT WITH NEW WINNERS.
Hagerstown, Md. – Hagerstown Speedway finally beat the weather Saturday night,
but not by much on JLG Industries Family and Duron Paint & Wallcovering night.
The pits were barely emptied before it began raining, but not before Ronnie
DeHaven Jr of Winchester, Va. became the eighth different winner this season in
the Cindy Rowe Auto Glass late models while Ashley Barrett, Shippensburg, Pa,
scored his career second win in the Hoosier Daddy 25 to became the seventh
different winner in the Hoosier Tire Mid Atlantic late model sportsman. Current
point leader in the Ernie’s Auto Enterprises pure stocks, Dale Hollidge of
Mechanicsville, Md., sped to his third win of the season while Derek Riley of
Middletown, Md., beat by six inches in his last Enduro Dash, won his career
second event by more than 11 seconds.
Following a lap ten restart, DeHaven Jr. had Alan Sagi knocking on the door but
DeHaven was able to hold off the repeated challenges to win by a length.
“I knew Alan was there, I could see him the whole time. Every time I turned
around he was there,” DeHaven said. “I hate to race like that, I know he had a
better car. That’s saying something about these goats (GRT’s) when you can get
in the middle and run at this place, these things are hard to handle. We’ve had
a monkey on our back for a long time. We got a little bit of luck in the heat
race and maybe we can turn this stuff around. I know Sagi was a little better.
He’s a heck of a racer .You can’t find a cleaner racer out there and I couldn’t
ask for anyone else to be second.”
Steve Axtell Jr. took the lead from the pole in the late model feature to lead
the first circuit, but DeHaven Jr., who started outside, made it short lived
when he charged around the outside. Eighth starting Sagi moved into second by
lap three as DeHaven was cruising nearly two seconds ahead while it was three
seconds from Sagi to tenth starting Kirk Ryan.
Marvin Winters stopped on lap ten with mechanical problems to display the
caution and on the restart, Sagi began putting the pressure on while 11th
starting Gary Stuhler sped around the outside to pass Brent Smith and Ryan and
move into third.
While it appeared Stuhler might steal the show, DeHaven and Sagi never allowed
him close enough to challenge following a lap 17 caution for a piece of debris.
One length separated DeHaven from Sagi who was making life miserable for DeHaven
the last several laps while Stuhler, Jamie Lathroum and Ryan. Paul Crowl
advanced ten spots to end sixth and get the Ernie’s Auto Hard Charger award with
Roy Deese Jr., from 14th, Brent Smith, David Williams and 15th starting Andy
Anderson to complete the top ten.
D.J.Troutman, Smith and Mike Lupfer won the heats while Nathan Durboraw was the
consy winner after becoming involved in a heat race incident that caused
extensive damage to his racer.
Barrett, scheduled to start fourth, slid up to the outside pole when Paul Cursey
spun on the second attempt to get the late model sportsman under way. Barrett
grabbed the lead away from Fred Harden off turn four to lead the first lap and
continue with a dominant run the entire race. Following a ninth lap restart,
Barrett gradually began inching away until he was in traffic and had two cars
and 2.9 seconds between he and Harden at the finish.
“I have to thank Pete and Fran Neuder.. Mom and Dad, if not for them, I’d still
be running street stocks,” Barrett said. “It was a big step moving up to this
class. The competition is so tough. There are so many different changes you can
make to the car. We’ve been second two times…so close I knew we could get one if
we got a break and we got one tonight.”
Barry Miller came from ninth to take third from Scott Palmer on lap 22 while
Terry Flaherty began and ended fifth. Pete Weaver came up ten spots to finish
sixth followed by Dylan Yoder, Andy Fries, Cory Houck and Richard Walls, from
17th. Heat wins went to Barrett, Palmer and Eugene Conlee while Walls was the
consy winner.
While Dave Mikolajski led the pure stocks over Steve Lowery and Kevin Keefer
from the outside pole in three and four wide racing, Hollidge was on the move
and was to second on lap seven and continued into the lead the next circuit. He
never looked back and stretched his lead to 3.90 seconds at the finish as
Mikolajski held off a last lap challenge from Lowery. Keefer and Danny Beavers
completed the top five. Hollidge was the J&M Sportsworld Hard charger after
starting 11th. Mikolajski, Hans Stamberg and Dave Stouffer Jr. were heat winners
with Kenny Dillon taking the consy victory.
“The guys were leaving me enough room to squeeze in on the bottom and I stayed
right off the guardrail and get the left rear down in the mud and drive it off
the corners,” Hollidge said.
After taking the lead and showing the way the majority of the last enduro race,
Derek Riley got beat by Krazy Kenny Thomas by six inches, but after pulling the
number one, he wasn’t going to let it happen again. Riley put the pedal to the
floor and was more than 11 seconds ahead of outside pole setter, Matt Smith
while Thomas came from 29th to end third. Other former winner, Mark Vegh
followed Thomas to end fourth with Robin Koogler taking fifth.
The speedway returns to action Saturday June 28th for the 43rd Annual Johnny
Roberts Memorial, 50 laps for the Cindy Rowe Auto Glass late models, along with
the Hoosier Tire Mid Atlantic late model sportsman and the Ernie’s Auto
Enterprises pure stocks plus a famous gigantic Zambelli fireworks display.

HAGERSTOWN RAINED OUT AGAIN, NININGER MEMORIAL POSTPONED
Hagerstown, Md. – It’s happened again! Saturday night again became the preferred
night for rain to arrive at Hagerstown Speedway. With late afternoon showers on
hand and more on the way (that did arrive later), the only option was to call
the program and make adjustments to the upcoming schedule.
The highlight of the evening was to be the 1st Annual Red Nininger Memorial
40-lap event for the Cindy Rowe Auto Glass late models which was part of
Shootout II in the Winchester/Hagerstown Shootout series. Also affected was the
Hoosier Daddy Hoosier Tire Mid Atlantic late model sportsman 25-lap event.
The Nininger Memorial has been moved to July 5th which will also include the
13th Annual Jim Cornett Tribute for the Ernie’s Salvage pure stocks and late
model sportsman.
The Hoosier Daddy event will be advanced just one week, to this Saturday, June
21.
So far, there have only been ten events completed and eight related to weather,
seven lost completely and one with events rescheduled and completed over several
other dates.
“This is unbelievable, it’s always on Saturday night,” said promoter Frank
Plessinger. “About five years ago, it rained out so many times. With the
Memorial events we already have, the Nininger event was a good addition to the
schedule. We can only hope for a nice July 5th which will give fans a good line
up of races over the holiday week along with the Roberts Memorial and Sprint
Speedweek.”
The speedway returns to action Saturday June 21st for a regular show of Cindy
Rowe late models, the Hoosier Daddy HTMA late model sportsman event and Ernie’s
pure stocks. The season’s third Enduro Dash is also included on the program.
Pit gates open at 4 p.m., grandstands open at 5 p.m and warm ups begin at 7 p.m.

BOAT YOUNGEST ON RECORD FOR FIRST USAC TRIUMPH, D. J. MYERS ENDS LATE MODEL
DROUGHT DATING TO 3/06
Hagerstown, Md. – Despite a 93 degree temperature that tied the 1984 record for
the hottest June 7th, 16 year old Chad Boat cared less about the heat when he
exited his sprint following his career first USAC Sprint Car victory at
Hagerstown Speedway, one that made him the youngest driver on record to score a
victory. Boat, of Phoenix, Ariz, and son of Indianapolis 500 veteran, Billy
Boat, led three laps from the pole, and then regained the spot to lead the final
22 circuits of the 30-lap event.
“This Maxim Chevy car was awesome tonight,” Boat said. “I hate running the
bottom. I hated Big Diamond the other night. I wanted to come to a place with a
big cushion. We weren’t supposed to come here. We were supposed to go to
Winchester (Indiana) tomorrow but we decided to come here.”
Cole Whitt, also 16, who finished in the runner up spot two seconds back, held
the record for only two days, after scoring his first ever victory at Big
Diamond Speedway as part of the Eastern Swing. Whitt’s finish made him the new
series point leader.
D.J. Myers, of Greencastle, Pa. was the Cindy Rowe Auto Glass late model winner
after scoring his first win since March 2006. Myers started fourth, passed Jack
Pencil to take over on the 13th lap and later beat David Williams by 2.5
seconds. Car owner Greg Gunter was on hand for the team’s first victory.
“I finally got a little bit of luck this evening,” Myers said. “I’d rather be
lucky than good. My boys have worked so hard this season…the things we’ve been
having. We keep saying we have a monkey on our back. Finally we kicked him off
and kicked a little dirt on him.”
Qualifying second in the semi-consolation, Boat began from the pole and quickly
took off as second row starters Whitt and Brad Short took up the next spots
before outside pole setter, Levin Jones could get settled in.
Whitt snatched the lead on the fourth before the caution waved on lap 5 when
several cars got together in turn one and two and involved Jones, who had
dropped to ninth.
Whitt led on the restart, but Boat ran the top side and regained the point on
lap nine. Cautions on laps ten and twelve regrouped the field as Boat continued
his line around the top with just over a half second advantage while Whitt
rounded the bottom and Robert Ballou held the third spot.
Boat entered the rear cars on lap 23 and began to stretch out his lead two laps
later. With three to go, Ballou got high in the fourth turn as 11th starter,
Jerry Coons Jr. got by to take control of third. Ballou gathered it back in to
only lose one spot as ninth starter, Damion Gardner ended fifth. Trailing them
were Brady Bacon from 16th, Tracy Hines, Brady Short, Dave Darland and 21st
starter, Bob Ream.
Twenty six entries were on hand with Chris Windom, Shane Golobic and Coons Jr.
won the heats with Hines winning the consolation.
After two attempts to get the late models under green, the backstretch lights
went out with a 20 minute delay in correcting the problem and having them
relight. Jack Pencil took the lead over Steve Axtell Jr. as Myers quickly
grabbed the runner up spot on the second circuit.
On lap four after sixth place J.T. Spence came to a stop, the lights again went
out when getting ready for the restart. The race was again restarted with Pencil
looking for his first ever Hagerstown win while Myers looked to get rid of the
monkey and Brent Smith trailed them.
Myers sped into the lead on lap 13 while Smith had 11th starter Gary Stuhler and
David Williams, from 14th, wanting his position with Stuhler taking it on the
15th lap and Williams passing Stuhler for the spot two laps later.
Myers found himself with a 4.4 second lead over Williams on the 18th lap when
Pencil’s car shut off and he was able to refire and drive on but Al Shawver
Sr.’s spin brought out the yellow.
Myers retook the green and began to edge away from Williams and went on for the
2.5 second victory.
“The races aren’t won by the driver, they’re won by the whole crew,” Myers said.
“Tonight, we were working together good. It was hot as heck, but we came
through.”
Stuhler, Roy Deese, from 13th and Smith completed the top five while Jim Yoder
(10th), Les Hare (17th) and Alan Sagi, from 24th to earn the Ernie’s Salvage
Yard hard charger award were next. Jamie Lathroum ended ninth after spinning on
the initial start and came from the rear and tenth went to Nathan Durboraw, who
also came from the rear after pitting when the lights went out on lap four.
Heats winners for the 31 entries were Axtell, Smith and Pencil while Ronnie
DeHaven won the consolation.
The speedway returns to action Saturday June 14th for the second of three events
of the Winchester/Hagerstown Shootout series, the 1st Annual Red Nininger
Memorial, a 40 lap event for the Late Models along with the Hoosier Daddy 25-lap
Late Model Sportsman event and Pure Stocks.
Pit gates open at 4 p.m., grandstands open at 5 p.m and warm ups begin at 7 p.m.

Thunderstorms Force Cancellation Of Saturday‘s World of Outlaws Late Model
‘Conococheague 50’ At Hagerstown Speedway
HAGERSTOWN, MD: A torrential morning thunderstorm and a forecast of heavy rain
later in the afternoon that did become a reality forced cancellation of Saturday
night’s World of Outlaws Late Model Series ‘Conococheague 50’ at Hagerstown
Speedway.
It was the first rainout of the 2008 season for the WoO LMS but the sixth
complete loss to Hagerstown plus another race night which forced postponements
to other dates. The national tour had completed 12 A-Mains without a
weather-related postponement or cancellation until this time.
The 27th Annual ‘Conococheague 50’ was set to be part of the WoO LMS for the
third consecutive season. WoO tour and speedway officials are looking at options
of another suitable date to reschedule the long running prestigious mid season
event.
“Hagerstown Speedway is one of the top tracks in the nation for dirt Late Model
racing and promoter Frank Plessinger has always been a key supporter of the
World of Outlaws Late Model Series,” said WoO LMS director Tim Christman.
“Everyone with the series –from the teams to the officials – looks forward to a
race at Hagerstown, so we’re all disappointed that the weather took a turn for
the worse this weekend.”
Hagerstown Speedway, of course, holds a historic place in the WoO LMS record
books. It is the only track that has held a WoO LMS event in each of the tour’s
first six seasons – 1988-1989, and 2004-2007.
Racing resumes this Saturday, June 7th with the USAC Wingless Sprints in action
for the second consecutive season accompanied by the Cindy Rowe Auto Glass late
models and will include TeamRAACE drivers Alan Sagi and his car owner Scott
LeBarron.
The RAACE Foundation “The Race Against Abuse of Children Everywhere” will have
their first TeamRAACE Membership Program Hospitality event of 2008. TeamRAACE
members will be treated to an evening of members only hospitality access behind
the main grandstands. Hospitality includes food, drinks and a special member
only autograph session.
TeamRAACE Membership Program engages individuals, race tracks, corporations,
sanctioning bodies and race teams to help The RAACE Foundation raise awareness
and funds through an incentive based membership program. With a Discount Program
through The TeamRAACE Membership Program, members can purchase discounted
Hagerstown Speedway admission tickets among many other products and services.
Individual TeamRAACE Memberships cost $40 and includes: Child Sexual Abuse
Education and Awareness Materials to share with friends and family members, the
RAACE to $2,000,000 Fundraising Kit, Name Listing on www.RAACE.org, TeamRAACE
Member Card, TeamRAACE Key Chain & T-Shirt, TeamRAACE membership Vehicle
Sticker, Bi-Monthly Racing Report, Discount Program and Hospitality Access.
The highlight of the evening is the “Race Against Abuse of Children Everywhere”
charity auction to benefit The RAACE Foundation. Many stars have donated race
used sheetmetal, driving suits, and tee shirts.
TeamRAACE driver Stevie Smith has donated a fan experience for one lucky person.
According to Smith: “Smith Racing will offer one lucky person the opportunity to
be crew member for the night. During the Hagerstown Speedway Pennsylvania
Speedweek show on Wednesday, July 2nd, we will provide a pit pass, official crew
tee shirt and view from the Hauler. Of course, we will also put them to work in
the pits. Hopefully, we can educate another fan as to why we are out here racing
for kids. The RAACE Foundation needs your support, so we are happy to donate
anything we can to the cause.”
For those that don’t know – Smith Racing, Alan Sagi and Scott LeBarron and
others donate their paint schemes to The RAACE Foundation, because according to
Stevie Smith: “It is the right thing to do.” To learn more about how abuse

TROUTMAN’S 151 EARNS BONEBRAKE TRIBUTE AND HAGERSTOWN FIRST, LEAR’S 151 ALSO
VICTOROUS WHILE YOUNKER DOUBLES
Hagerstown, Md. – With two #151’s winning on Saturday night at Hagerstown
Speedway, D.J.Troutman drove the one to victory and added his name as a winner
of the 40-lap 13th Annual Richard ‘Boney’ Bonebrake Tribute for the Cindy Rowe
Auto Glass late models.
Handily winning his heat to take a front row start, Troutman, Hyndman,Md.,
dropped to third and patiently waited the car to come to him as he battled
Nathan Durboraw for 11 laps before one miscue was then opportunity to charge
past, lead the final three laps and win over the 2002 event winner by 1.81
seconds.
“Actually I feel like crying, “Troutman responded about capturing his first ever
Hagerstown victory. “I’ve been down here watching races since I’ve been three
years old. To race with Nathan Durboraw for the win…this is absolute the best
win I’ve ever won. I can’t believe I’m standing here.”
It was also Old Timers Night as more than a dozen former champions and winners,
both at Hagerstown and various other speedways in the 60ies,70ies and 80ies were
on hand to meet with race fans and later interviewed during intermission by the
former “voice of the Hagerstown Speedway”, Frank Sagi. They earlier met at a
luncheon at the nearby Gateway Seafood House where numerous reenactments of
races from the past were shared.
Kyle Lear of Severn, Md. scored his second win and career third of the weekend
in the other #151, having won his career second Hoosier Tire Mid Atlantic late
model sportsman event during a postponed May 3rd event held Friday night. Lear
surged ahead of race long leader Nick Pappas on the 15th lap and later won by a
half length over Ashley Barrett who also trailed during his Friday win.
“We’ve been trying to get the runs in but it’s been raining these weekends,”
Lear said. “We finally got it dialed in this weekend.”
There also was a #94 in victory lane, not once, but twice, as Darrin Younker of
Berkley Springs, WV doubled up by winning a May 3rd postponed event for the
Ernie’s Salvage Yard pure stocks to start the night despite losing power
steering on lap five, while returning to end it with the scheduled feature
triumph.
“We like it when its slick, there’s no better racing,” Younker said following
his second win.” We could enjoy this one better. Between myself and Justin
Snodderly, we had enough parts to fix this thing. It was a lot easier to win
with power steering.”
After the restored #B2 of Richard Bonebrake paced the field for the start of the
Tribute event, Frankie Plessinger got the drop on Troutman to lead while sixth
starter Durboraw was into third by the second circuit and then took the runner
up spot from Troutman on the sixth circuit.
Plessinger led by more than a second when the only caution waved as Ronnie
DeHaven Jr. came to a stop. Following the restart, Plessinger and Durboraw put
on a show lap after lap with Plessinger rounding the middle and Durboraw on top
as Plessinger shut the door until the 25th circuit when Durboraw edged ahead off
the fourth turn with Troutman following as Plessinger’s mount was not handling
the same.
Troutman then closed in and began to mount his challenge while Jim Yoder and
Marvin Winters also moved in on the front duo with ten to go.
Just one slip by Durboraw allowed Troutman to surge past leaving Durboraw in the
clutches of Winters in an all new mount to get by on the white flag lap but
Troutman was not to be caught and captured the prestigious win by 1.81 seconds.
Winters and Durboraw were next as Yoder and Plessinger completed the top five.
Kirk Ryan was sixth while Gary Stuhler, seventh, was the Ernie’s Salvage Yard
hard charger after starting 19th. Roy Deese Jr., Dan Stone, from 16th and Billy
Wampler rounded the top ten. Heats for the 36 entries went to Troutman,
Plessinger, Durboraw and Winters while Andy Anderson was the consolation winner.
With one lap in the books of the late model sportsman event, Cody Lear and Brian
Lessley got together on the backstretch as Lessley spun around triggering a
multi car incident. Nick Pappas reassumed the lead over Scott Palmer while Lear
began from the 12th starting former winner’s position and was into third by the
seventh lap. Pappas remained steadfast as Lear moved into the runner up spot on
the 12th and then charged off the fourth turn to lead three laps later.
Following the next lap was Ashley Barrett and on the outside of Lear actually
ahead when an 18th lap caution for Pappas in turn two set up a two lap shootout.
Barrett was strong but needed the lost momentum and settled for his second
runner up of the weekend, a half length back. Palmer broke his bad luck and
ended third with Richard Walls and Michael Collins completing the top five.
Heats for the 30 entries went to Walls, Collins and Barrett while Jerry Bard won
the
In the May 3rd postponed pure stock event, Steve Lowery led until Wayne Hawbaker
took over on lap five while Younker, coming from tenth left a big puff of smoke
on the fifth lap when he lost power steering and took over second. Younker
passed Hawbaker on the eighth circuit to hold off Hawbaker by only .53 second in
a one lap shootout. Point leader Dale Hollidge came from 12th to finish third
over Drew Fitzsimmons and Bobby Taylor, the J&M Sportsworld hard charger from
18th.
In the scheduled event, Hawbaker led from the outside pole while Younker was
charging around the outside towards the front to drive past Brian Swiger on the
eighth and then Hawbaker on the tenth. Mike Warrenfeltz, making his season first
start, moved into second on the 12th but Younker actually opened a slight margin
on him in the final three circuits to win by 1.88 seconds. Two time winner, Hans
Stamberg was next with Hawbaker and two time winner, Hollidge ending fifth.
Younker was the J & M Sportsworld hard charger. Heats for the 32 entries went to
Hollidge, Mike Sanders and Younker with Dave Stouffer Jr. winning the
consolation.
The speedway returns to action Saturday as the World of Outlaw Late Models
Series makes their only appearance of the season for the 27th Annual
Conococheague 50-lap event accompanied by an Ernie’s Salvage Yard pure stock
special.

BYLER AND LEAR SPLIT WINS ON SPECIAL CHARITY NIGHT AT HAGERSTOWN
Hagerstown, Md. – Derek Byler and Kyle Lear split the Hoosier Tire Mid Atlantic
late model sportsman features held Friday night at Hagerstown Speedway as part
of the Special Exhibition Charity Race night. Grandstand admission was free with
donations taken to benefit Speedway Children’s Charity.
Both drivers were patient and the races ended in their favor. Byler of
Alexandria, Pa, started alongside Ashley Barrett on the front row in the 25 lap
Exhibition event as Barrett showed the way for the first 14 laps until making
one slip and Byler was past. He continued on to score his first ever Hagerstown
triumph by 1.41 seconds over Barrett.
Lear of Severn, Md., tracked Tyler Armstrong following a ninth lap caution in
the postponed May 3rd ARCH Night event until getting the lead on lap 14 when
Armstrong slid high in the fourth turn as Lear sped by to later pick up the win
by 3.8 seconds over James Myers.
Krazy Kenny Thomas of Keedysville, Md was the Enduro Dash winner in the event
postponed from May 3rd. Thomas started 21st and after moving into second on the
21st lap, closed a four second gap on Derek Riley but it wasn’t over until the
checkered as Thomas won over Riley by a mere six inches.
Ashley Barrett, who just had a cast removed from his arm two weeks ago following
an earlier racing accident, showed the way over Byler through several caution
flags with Byler beginning his challenges at the midway point. He tried his luck
on a seventh lap restart and pulled alongside but Barrett powered back but on a
14th lap restart, Byler, dove low and came out on top. He enjoyed just over a
three second lead when a caution bunched the field on lap 22 and then following
a subsequent one the next lap, pulled ahead of Barrett 1.41 seconds in the final
two circuits.
“My dad has been bringing me here since I was a kid to watch,” Byler said, “To
win at Hagerstown, it’s awesome, there’s no other word to describe it. I knew we
were good, I knew if I just kept my cool and stayed calm, I could pull it off.”
Jerry Bard ended third after starting eighth with Andy Fries (14th) and Tyler
Armstrong completing the top five. Heats went to Barrett, Shawn Jones and Wayne
Walls Jr. as Robbie Black was the consolation winner.
In the postponed May 3rd feature, Armstrong powered away from the pole with
James Myers chasing while Lear was picking off one car at a time after starting
eighth. Armstrong was 4.6 seconds ahead when Lear moved into second before the
only caution waved on lap nine.
Armstrong was battling a tight handling race car following the restart and a
slip on the 11th lap allowed Lear to close in, but the one on lap 13 completely
opened the door for Lear to speed on past and open up a more than two second
lead in one lap. Myers then got past Armstrong as did Jerry Bard and several
others but Lear was long gone and continued on to clinch his career second
Hagerstown win by 3.8 seconds over Myers.
“Tyler started to push there about three laps before I got to him,” Lear said.
“It was bound to happen eventually and then it happened. Once that yellow came
out, he had a little more pressure on him.”
Shawn Jones ended third and held off 11th starting Andy Fries at the line as
10th starting Pete Weaver completed the front five finishers. Heats completed on
May 3rd were won by Myers, Fries and Armstrong while Dylan Yoder was the
consolation winner. Bruce Kane was the hard charger in both events.
The speedway returns to action tonight (May 24th) with the Memorial Day weekend
special, the 13th Annual Richard Boney Bonebrake Tribute along with Old Timers
night. The late model sportsman will also compete along the pure stocks in a
double feature, the one being postponed from May 3rd.
Pit gates open at 4 p.m., grandstands open at 5 p.m and warm ups begin at 7 p.m.

LES HARE AND MOTHER NATURE SPLIT HAGERSTOWN WINS
Hagerstown, Md. – Following an ARCH night rain out on May 3rd and the Cindy Rowe
Auto Glass late model feature postponed two weeks at Hagerstown Speedway, Les
Hare had no problem with the wait. It’s been a long time coming for the
Stewartstown, PA veteran, although not a regular for numerous years, it was his
first Hagerstown score since June 22, 1996 and career fourth.
“I almost lost my way (to victory lane), it’s been so long,” Hare said. “I
brought my youngest son with me tonight and the last time I took him, I won. I
think he’s going along all the time now.”
For the third consecutive race date and sixth time this season of 12 events,
Mother Nature intervened. Rain arrived before qualifying was completed in all
divisions on scheduled Student Night with the entire event cancelled and rain
checks being honored for 18 months.
The Maryland Clash, Limited /Late Model Sportsman Hagerstown/ Allegany County
event will be made up as part of the July 5th program as will the Enduro Dash
event that was lost.
When David Williams had a suspension problem and his fender brace was wearing
two grooves in his tire, Hare took the top spot before the last caution flag
waved on lap 16. He led the final ten circuits to edge Gary Stuhler by .72
seconds.
Frankie Plessinger held a slight advantage on Dave Troutman Jr. on the first lap
but slipped high in the second turn as Troutman and several other cars drove by
including sixth starter, David Williams who took over following a second lap
restart when Paul Crowl came to a stop in turn four.
Williams appeared to be the car to beat until he started showing some smoke
before the halfway mark when he was just over two seconds ahead of fifth
starting Hare, who took second from Troutman on lap five.
Williams slid high in the second turn of the 15th lap as Hare and Stuhler
scooted on by for the top positions as the caution then waved the next circuit
to regroup the field.
With Williams still hanging on to third, he got sideways in turn three of the
20th circuit as eighth starting Kirk Ryan , Roy Deese Jr., from 12th and 15th
starter Billy Wampler charged past.
Hare wasn’t shaking Stuhler, who was close enough to smell Hare’s exhaust but
unable to mount a challenge as Hare got to the line .72 seconds ahead.
“I’ve been doing this a long time and I looked over at the score board and saw
90 (Stuhler),’ Hare said. “I thought ‘Well, he’s going to have to earn it, I’m
running as hard as I can.’ I know Gary is tough wherever he goes, so I was just
trying to stay on my line and not make any mistakes and it paid off.”
“Clair Leiphart put me in this car a few years…we ran limited that one year and
decided to come back to super lates. Diehl Motor Company, if it wouldn’t be for
them, we wouldn’t be here.”
Ryan, Deese and Wampler finished off the top five spots while 14th starter, Alan
Sagi ended sixth while Williams, Nathan Durboraw, hard charger Jack Pencil from
23rd and 17th starting Jamie Lathroum completed the top ten.
Heat races held May 3rd were won by Ryan, Steve Gibney, and Durboraw while J.T.
Spence won the consolation
While Student Night was progressing without delay with a full pit area of 37
late models, 37 late model sportsman and 28 pure stocks plus 25 enduro cars, Han
Stamberg, Bobby Taylor and Steve Lowery were Ernie’s Salvage yard heat winners.
In the second attempt at getting the Maryland Clash event in the records books,
Barry Miller, Dave Troutman Jr and Robbie Black had won heats with Matt
Sponaugle leading with two to go in the fourth heat when the rains arrived.
On Friday, May 23rd, the special charity late model sportsman event was
scheduled and it now includes two sportsman features including the postponed May
3rd event along with the Enduro Dash from that same night. Admission is free,
but donations will be accepted for Speedway Children’s Charity.
Pit gates open at 4 p.m., grandstands at 5:00 p.m. and warm ups begin at 7:30
p.m. Check the speedway website for any changes in weather at:

STUHLER OPENS THE WINCHESTER/HAGERSTOWN SHOOTOUT I SERIES WITH #124
Hagerstown, Md. – Friday night was all Gary Stuhler as “Mr. Smooth” made it look simple while he opened the Winchester/Hagerstown Shootout I Series opener at Hagerstown Speedway with his career 124th triumph. The Greencastle, Pa. veteran lined up third in the heads up start for the Cindy Rowe Auto Glass late models and after taking the lead from Mike Atherton on the third lap, was in a league of his own, taking the checkered flag 3.66 seconds ahead of Tommy Armel in the 40-lap event.
“We have to thank Mark Richards and Rocket Chassis and Integra Racing Shocks for this,” Stuhler said. “My whole crew has been working hard. We struggled a little bit there. We’ve been plugging away.”
“I have to dedicate this win to my car owner, Glenn Nininger. He had open heart surgery and he’s recuperating. He’s the one that puts all the money up for this deal. He’s not with us tonight, but we’re with him so I thank him and thank all my sponsors and my son for keeping this car nice looking. This is just a big effort by a bunch of people, I just get all the glory standing out here.“
Also getting to victory lane was Barry Miller of Three Springs, Pa. who went to the line second in the Hoosier Tire Mid Atlantic late model sportsman feature but ended with his first win since last season’s opener when Gene Conlee was disqualified for an engine head infraction.
“I’d have rather crossed under the flag first. I don’t know what the situation was there, but I’ll take it,” Miller said. “The car has been really good. We got a new rear end over the winter and it really helped. We have more adjustments to fine tune the car.”
Picking up his second win of the season in four weeks of racing was Dale Hollidge of Mechanicsville, Md. Hollidge took over on lap nine and was 1.8 seconds ahead of Dean Holmes at the finish.
“The car was pretty much perfect tonight,” Hollidge said. “We’re still making some changes on it and making it a little better and better. We started way back in 11th and were able to drive up through there. It was just a smooth night.”
With a heads up draw, Mike Atherton led the first two circuits until Stuhler took charge off the second turn and began to drive away and by the tenth circuit was more than six seconds ahead of Atherton and seventh starting Armel.
Stuhler was into the rear of the field on lap 15 and later had three cars and five seconds separating him from Atherton when the first caution waved on lap 21.
While Stuhler took off on the restart, Armel grabbed the runner up spot as Atherton had Jamie Lathroum and Andy Anderson challenging with Anderson taking the third spot on lap 25.
Stuhler had stretched his lead to more than four seconds over Armel when another caution flag waved on the 31st circuit and continued his dominance in the final circuits by driving away to 3.66 seconds at the checkered.
Armel and Anderson were next with Atherton and 11th starting Jason Covert completing the top five. Mike Lupfer was next while Jim Bernheisel came from 18th for seventh followed by Lathroum, Alan Sagi (13th) and Jim Yoder (15th). Heats for the 42 entries were won by Atherton, Tyler Hershey, Stuhler and Scott LeBarron while J.T. Spence and Brent Smith split the two consolations.
Gene Conlee led the late model sportsman from the pole over Robby Beall while Miller moved into third after starting sixth. Miller took on the ninth lap and trailed Conlee by more than two seconds when a 16th lap yellow was displayed. Conlee drove past the flag stand .69 seconds ahead of Miller but failed a post race inspection of the engine heads.
Brian Lessley ended second followed by Andy Fries, Terry Flaherty and Scott Palmer from 13th. Tyler Hershey was sixth with Cody Lear, Beall, Steve Axtell, the St.Thomas Towing/Checkered Flag Lube hard charger, and Richard Walls completing the top ten. Heats for the 30 entries went to Miller, Lessley and Shawn Jones with Allen Brannon winning the consolation.
Dave Stouffer took the lead from Dave Mikolajski on the second lap and held off Danny Beavers while Hollidge moved into the picture who got by both to take the pure stock lead on lap nine. Following a ninth lap restart, he began stretching his lead to 1.8 seconds over Dean Holmes who grabbed the runner up spot from Stouffer on the white flag lap. Stouffer ended third with Darrin Younker coming from the rear after a second lap incident that also involved two time winner Hans Stamberg who followed Lin Sutphin to the line in sixth. Bill Ecton Jr., Younker and Stamberg won the heats while Bill Reitober was the consolation winner.
The speedway returns to action Saturday, April 26th for the 27th Annual Stanley Schetromph Classic, a 50-lap event sanctioned by the Lucas Oil Series for the Cindy Rowe Auto Glass Late Models along with the Hoosier Tire Mid Atlantic Late Model Sportsman competing in the first Maryland Clash event, a combined 30-lap event with The Rock, Allegany County Speedway, paying $1,000 to win and $100 to start
Pit gates open at 4 p.m., grandstands open at 5 p.m and warm ups begin at 7 p.m. Check the speedway website for any changes in weather at: www.hagerstownspeedway.com or contact the speedway office at 301-582-0640.

DEESE CONTINUES STRONG WITH BACK TO BACK TRIUMPHS; WEAVER, STAMBERG ALSO SCORE
Hagerstown, Md. – Roy Deese Jr. stormed through the Cindy Rowe Auto Glass late
model field from the 12th position on Saturday evening to later celebrate in
Hagerstown Speedway victory lane for the second consecutive week. It was just a
week ago that the Laurel, Md veteran landed his first victory since May 2005 and
the five time champion is already atop the Cindy Rowe points standings.
“I’ll tell what you what makes this thing go, Rocket chassis and Russell Baker
race engine,” Deese said. “I’ve never had an engine run so good. I tried to be
patient. The car got a little loose but it came to me as the race went on. I’m
real excited to be in victory lane again.”
As the race progressed from two initial restarts the rest of the way under the
green, Deese powered into fifth by the second lap and took runner up honors
behind eight time champion, Nathan Durboraw on lap 18. Deese finally exited turn
four on lap 22 with the lead and sped away to a 1.78 second triumph over
Durboraw.
“Nathan’s a great competitor,” Deese said. “Any time you can run wheel to wheel
with Nathan…he’s a good guy, he races good, hard, clean, you beat Nathan, you
had to earn it.”
In other racing, Pete Weaver, of nearby Williamsport, Md. began on the point
with a three car inversion and took the opportunity to post his first Hoosier
Tire Mid Atlantic late model sportsman victory since August 2006. He scored the
win by 2.78 seconds over fifth starter, Scott Palmer.
“It’s a lot easier starting from the pole,” Weaver said. ”It was a little cooler
tonight so we ran a little bit harder stuff. We had to really try to keep some
heat in the tires. But it all worked out well.”
Hans Stamberg of Hedgesville, WV was victorious for the second time of the
season in the Ernie Auto Salvage pure stocks and inherited the lead when Darrin
Younker broke with two laps remaining. Stamberg won by .31 seconds over Bobby
Taylor.
“It took me a while working on Bobby to get around him and then I found some
good brown dirt down next to the rail,” Stamberg said. “Even I had caught
Darrin, I don’t think that would have worked. He knows what he’s doing.”
Mark Vegh of Frederick, Md started off the Enduro Dash season with his more than
eight second win over Matt Smith following a side by side race through traffic
with Krazy Kenny Thomas until Thomas spun on lap 25.
Following two attempts to get the six car inverted late models under way, Kirk
Ryan jumped to the front as third starter, Durboraw quickly occupied the second
spot with pole setter Billy Wampler next and Les Hare having to deal with Deese
by the second lap. Deese was past Wampler for third by lap six but Wampler
didn’t give up easy. Deese came back to secure the spot on lap ten and then
chase down Durboraw and Ryan.
Durboraw took the lead from Ryan on lap 14 while Deese patiently kept trying his
options until getting by Ryan on the 18th and figuring a plan to get past
Durboraw.
Deese used turns three and four to make the pass stick as he sped into the lead
on lap 22 as Mike Lupfer had closed the gap and running right with Durboraw and
Ryan but Deese was fleet footing to the checkered. Alan Sagi took fifth spot on
the final lap after coming from 11th while Wampler was next. Jim Yoder came from
15th to finish seventh with Marvin Winters (13th), Hare and Paul Crowl
completing the top ten.
Heats were won by Brent Smith, Deese Jr., and Darryl Hills while the consolation
went to Brian Booze.
Weaver grabbed the late model sportsman lead from the point over Terry Flaherty
while Kyle Lear and Scott Palmer took up the next positions. Palmer passed Lear
on lap 7 and he and Flaherty could see Weaver pulling away and was more than
three seconds ahead by a lap15 caution. Palmer powered around the high side of
Flaherty following the restart but Weaver was saying “catch me if you can” as he
stormed towards the finish to arrive 2.78 seconds ahead while Palmer, Flaherty
and Lear ran nip and tuck to the finish with Palmer ending second with Lear
winning third with two to go while Barry Miller joined in to take fourth from
Flaherty on the final circuit. Derek Byler came from 13th to end sixth and earn
the Checkered Flag Lube/St Thomas Towing hard charger award. Andy Fries, Jerry
Bard, Dylan Yoder and Mike Walls completed the top ten. Lear, Flaherty and
Weaver won the heats.
Darrin Younker stormed into the lead from the fourth spot over pole sitter Bobby
Taylor while fifth starting Stamberg arrived to begin challenging Taylor as
Younker had things under control. Stamberg finally got past Taylor on the tenth
circuit and was ready to settle for second until Younker suddenly slowed to a
stop. Stamberg went on to post the win over Taylor by .31 seconds as Dean Holmes
and previous weeks winner Dean Hollidge was a close fourth. Kevin Dayhoff ended
fifth. Stamberg, Danny Beavers and Younker won heats as Lin Sutphin won the
consy.
Danny Holmes and William Crook were early enduro leaders as Krazy Kenny Thomas
took over on lap nine. Vegh began challenging him the next lap as they began a
race through traffic, splitting cars, weaving in and out as Vegh took over on
lap 19. Six laps later Thomas spun, leaving Vegh’s closest competitor, Matt
Smith, more than eight seconds behind.
The speedway returns to action Friday April 19 for the first of three events of
the Winchester/Hagerstown Shootout series, a 40 lap $3000 to win, $300 to start
event for the Late Models along with the Late Model Sportsman and Pure Stocks.
Pit gates open at 4 p.m., grandstands open at 5 p.m and warm ups begin at 7 p.m.

Roy Deese, Jr. Wins Cindy Rowe Auto Glass Feature At Hagerstown
Hagerstown, Md. – The question was not if, but when it would happen. Five time
Hagerstown Speedway late model champion Roy Deese Jr. stood proudly in victory
lane Saturday night after winning his first Cindy Rowe Auto Glass feature in
nearly three seasons. His last triumph was May 7, 2005. What a way to make a bid
towards a sixth title but to win the season opening points event.
The Laurel, Md. veteran started outside pole in the four car inverted start and
beat pole setter Gary Stuhler into turn one. Stuhler hung close but never enough
to mount a serious challenge as Deese took the win by .47 seconds.
“By golly, it feels good to be back…it’s been a long time since I’ve won a race
here,” Deese said. “The fans have been great, the track has been great. We’ve
had a great surface to race on every night this year. We got way behind on
technology after I got a little sick and we’re finally starting to catch up.
Gary is a good racer and he raced me clean. We’ve been having some problems with
the brake system and the pedals on the floor. Thank goodness this one is over.”
Another winner starting off atop the Hoosier Tire Mid Atlantic points standings
was St. Thomas, Pa.’s Richard Walls who began from the pole in the six car
inversion and battled the entire distance with 16-year-old Dylan Yoder, whose
dad, Jim Yoder, had claimed his first Hagerstown win the previous week. Walls
eventually beat Yoder by one length for his career 25th victory while
celebrating his 25th Anniversary season.
“He could get up beside me, but I could pull him down the straightaway,” Walls
said. “That’s the cleanest race that people like to see. Any time you can run a
clean race like that…if I’d finished second, I’d just been as happy. I knew he
was there, I gave him all the space he wanted and we just got lucky.”
Dale Hollidge also starts out with the Ernie’s Salvage Yard pure stock points
lead with a .25 second victory over previous weeks winner, Hans Stamberg.
Hollidge led all the way from the outside in a three car inversion.
“The car started to get a little tight up there the last three or four laps and
picking up a little push,” said Hollidge of Mechanicsville, Md. “I saw him
sneaking to the inside but it was enough to hold him back.”
Deese grabbed the lead over Stuhler as the two veterans took off with Billy
Wampler closing in and joining them with a comfortable distance back to J.T.
Spence.
Lap ten spelled disaster for a number of drivers when tenth running Greg Fetters
and a few others getting together coming off turn two with Fetters ending
sideway nearing turn three as cars scattered. Brent Smith ended up side down
with Steve Axtell Jr. atop him while eight others were involved.
The race resumed with Deese, Stuhler and Wampler still showing the way with just
over three seconds back to Spence by lap 18 when Deese caught rear cars. Keith
Jackson spun on lap 21 as Spence blasted around Wampler on the restart and 12th
starting Jim Yoder following along but they came to the line in that order while
Scott LeBarron held the fifth spot.
“I have to thank Russell Baker Racing Engines,” Deese said. “I’ll tell you, when
I come off the corners, I better have a plan as this thing is going down the
straightaway in a hurry.”
Wampler ended sixth with Darryl Hills, Ray Kable Jr, Kirk Ryan from 24th to pick
up the Ernie’s Salvage hard charger award and Paul Crowl coming from 18th to
finish tenth.
Heats for the 38 entries were Wampler, Kable Jr., Deese Jr. and Stuhler while
Brent Smith was the consy winner.
It took a third attempt to get the Hoosier Tire Mid Atlantic late model
sportsman feature underway, the second attempt resulting in nine cars involved
in a turn two incident with several returning.
Walls took over but soon had fifth starting Yoder close in by lap two. After a
fourth lap restart, Yoder began giving Walls a workout as he led the fifth lap
but Walls again pulled ahead to hold a slight advantage. Yoder repeatedly tried
to make the low side work and pulled alongside every lap until the finish as he
ended one length back. Pete Weaver had a front view the entire race while Nick
Pappas and Cody Lear, from 16th completed the top five. Jerry Bard came from the
initial start incident to finish sixth with Scott Palmer, Rick Stouffer (18th),
defending two time champion and previous weeks winner, Andy Fries who returned
from a first lap incident which broke his steering to finish ninth. Kyle Lear
came from 23rd to end tenth and pick up the Checkered Flag Lube./St. Thomas
Towing hard charger award aboard the Chuck Cox racer. Fries, Yoder and Tyler
Armstrong were heat winners.
Hollidge led from the outside pole while Stamberg quickly grabbed second as
Darin Younker claimed third. Stamberg drafted Hollidge the entire distance and
made several attempts to get to the inside but both cars were so equal and the
top side being a little quicker around, Stamberg had to settle for second.
Younker retained third with Dave Stouffer and Bobby Taylor completing the front
five. Stamberg, Hollidge and Kevin Keefer were the heat winners with Dean Holmes
winning the consolation and coming from 19th to finish sixth.
The speedway returns to action Saturday April 12 for a regular three division

YODER CLAIMS FIRST HAGERSTOWN WITH THE OLDEST CAR IN THE STABLE
Hagerstown, Md. – “This is so cool. I always wanted to win here and I’m so glad
I finally did it,” said a very happy Jim Yoder as he celebrated his career first
Hagerstown Speedway victory on Saturday night. “This thing flew down the
straight-aways. This is the oldest car we have. It’s a 2000 and should be worn
out, but it’s the fastest thing we got.”
Yoder, of Selinsgrove, Pa. started from the pole in the eight car inverted Cindy
Rowe Auto Glass late model feature to lead all the way and claim the win by less
than a length over defending champion J. T. Spence.
Other features on Grand Opening night were just as fast and exciting as two time
defending champion Andy Fries of Mercersburg, Pa claimed the Hoosier Tire-Mid
Atlantic late model sportsman win while Hans Stamberg of Hedgesville, WV
blistered the track in the Ernie’s Salvage Yard pure stocks with a new track
record of 6 minutes 14 seconds to finish eight seconds ahead of Dean Holmes.
Yoder and Marvin Winters brought the late model field to green but by the third
lap, Yoder already was showing he was in a different time zone and two seconds
ahead. Winters held to second until fifth starting David Williams took the
runner up spot on lap six but Spence, who started alongside, blew by two laps
later. By then, Yoder was just over four seconds ahead and was two cars into the
rear of the field when Winters coasted to a stop on lap 12.
Following the restart, it was one real battle for second just over a length back
as Spence, Williams and Roy Deese Jr. were putting on a driving show until Greg
Fetters came to a stop on lap 15.
The restart saw the same as there was no let up behind Yoder as Alan Sagi had
closed in from his 12th starting spot but he watched Deese challenge Williams
while Williams was giving it his all to get around Spence and Spence gave it is
all the final circuit and came up just short at the finish.
“I knew those guys were there and I was just keeping my line, trying to keep it
going slow in,” Yoder said. “That’s the biggest thing you have to learn here. I
guess we always went too fast in over the years since I’ve been coming here and
I finally got it straight and figured out.”
In order, Spence, William, Deese Jr., and Sagi while 10th starter, Devin Friese
ended sixth, followed by Jamie Lathroum, from 18th, Gary Stuhler, from the consy
win and 21st, Ronnie DeHaven and D.J. Myers.
Heats went to David Hills, Deese Jr., Spence and Williams, while Stuhler won the
consolation after becoming involved in a third heat race incident.
Barry Miller led the late model sportsman from the outside pole in the six car
inverted start but Fries, from sixth, was ready to challenge by the first lap
completion as he went to the high side and took over. Jerry Bard took third with
Terry Flaherty next but both dropped out with mechanical problems on laps nine
and ten with Yoder’s son, Dylan taking over third with Kyle Lear into fourth.
The final ten laps remained under green as Fries and Miller held a two second
lead on Yoder but after taking the white flag, Yoder slowed in the first turns,
the victim of a right front flat, possibly from contact with Bard when he slowed
unexpectedly on lap ten.
“It’s great to start the year out like this,” Fries said. “I remember last year,
first night out, Barry Miller, he beat me and I ran second. I thought, ‘Man, I
don’t know if I can get him if he stays on the top’, but he drove to the bottom
and left the top open, I said ‘It’s my race’ because I like that high side.”
Lear continued on to finish third over Fred Harden and Richard Walls, who
corrected some problems in his heat and came all the way from 20th spot. Paul
