Hellertown PA’s “Quaker Shaker” Rick Laubach out duels Richie Pratt Jr. to win his 2nd George Wingate Memorial during the Bridgeport/New Egypt challenge series event Tues night on the Famed Bridgeport 5/8th mile clay. Laubach wins his second of the Bridgeport/New Egypt Challenge series and his 20th of his career.

Laurel DE’s Kevin Collins patience and perseverance pays off as he races from a 20th starting spot for his third 358 Sportsman feature win of the season.

Bridgeport Speedway had plenty of great sponsors on hand, including Sal DeBruno & Overhead Doors, Cliff Krause & Supreme Manufacturing, Mike Lyons & Family, DCS Racing, The Racing Realtor, Bill Flannery Automotive, Clean N Shine, Mohrs Graphics and Clean Up Guys for the Wingate Memorial event offering heat winner money, consi winner money and cash for dash to make for an exciting evening of racing.

Several of Dirt Track Racing’s best invaded Bridgeport Speedway for the George Wingate Memorial Tuesday night including some of New Egypt’s best for the 40 lap Big Block Modified Bridgeport/New Egypt Challenge Series feature event. Birdsboro PA’s Scott Irwin started on the pole for the event. At the drop of the green the 14w of Ryan Watt quickly jumped out to a huge lead as he left some of Dirt Racing’s best to battle for position. Ryan Godown and Richie Pratt Jr. began an early battle for the 2nd spot with the #44 of Frank Cozze close behind. It didn’t take long for “Mr. Big Event” #4 of Duane Howard to jump into the top 5 to make his bid on the leaders from his 9th starting spot. Howard soon made his move on Cozze and set his sights on 3rd place of Richie Pratt Jr. Pratt was all over the rear bumper of Ryan Godown and finally got his shot and took it, moving into the 2nd spot on lap 5. Deeper in the field, Jimmy Horton, Rick Laubach, Billy Pauch, Steve Bottcher, Craig Von Doren and Jeff Strunk battled 2 wide in the corners as they tried to race their way into the top 5. Howard had his Modified glued to the bottom as he took the 3rd spot away from Godown and looked as if he was going straight after the leaders of Watt and Pratt. Challenge Series points leader, Mike Iles has begun working his way into the top 10 from his 19th spot. New Egypt regulars Frank Cozze and Keith Hoffman have mechanical problems and pull into the infield with Shawn Reimert as their nights come to an early end on lap 8. Watt has now opened up a commanding lead as he starts to come up on lapped traffic. As Watt starts to deal with heavy traffic, Pratt takes advantage and starts closing the gap. It doesn’t take Pratt long before he reels in the leader of Watt just before the first yellow flies for the 7A of Chic Cossaboone, who spins up to the turn 2 wall on lap 14. The field is now bunched up for a restart which works to the leader Watt’s advantage who longer has to deal with lapped traffic. Watt is still the leader with Pratt 2nd, Howard 3rd, Godown 4th and Laubach now in the top 5 spot for the restart. Watt chooses the outside for the restart but Pratt is all over Watt looking to make the pass on the inside but Watt shuts him down from the hi-side. Mike Iles is also on the move and has now raced into the top five from starting deep in the field. Exiting turn four, Pratt suddenly slows but gets back in the gas after giving the 2nd spot up to Duane Howard but it was short lived as Howard brings out a yellow for a flat tire soon after. On the restart, Watt is still your leader, Pratt is in 2nd Mike Iles is now 3rd Laubach 4th and Steve Bottcher in 5th. Watt maintains the lead from the outside but it’s Laubach that makes a big move and makes the pass on Iles for 3rd and now sets his sights on Pratt in second. Pratt and Laubach now start a 2 wide, side by side battle for the 2nd spot at both ends of the speedway. Billy Pauch has now started to makes his move moving into the top 5 battling Wade Hendrickson who has charged up from 25th starting spot at the half way mark. Watt begins to open up a lead as Laubach and Pratt continue to slug it out for the second until the yellow flies again this time for #71 of Jimmy Horton who’s bad luck continues as he glances of the guardrail in turn 3. On the restart, Watt jumps back to the lead from the outside lane with Pratt all over his bumper as the two race side by side into 1 and 2 then down the backstretch. Pratt sets up Watt heading into turn 3 and dives down hard and low and does a classic slide job up in front of Watt to emerge out of turn 4 as the new leader. Laubach doesn’t take long to make to jump all over a stunned Watt as the 2 begin to slug it out for 2nd spot as Pratt begins to open up a lead. The top five really begin to heat up as Pauch, Bottcher and Chad James go 3 wide at both ends of the track trying to catch the leaders. Laubach now has sent Watt into 3rd as Laubach begins to track down Pratt. With 12 laps remaining, the hard charging Mike Iles has to pull’er into the infield to a steamy stop which ends his great run from the rear of the field early and brings out the caution for what is certain to be an exciting restart. On the restart Pratt jumps back out to the lead with Laubach all over his bumper as Pauch gets a great start and moves into the 3rd spot. Laubach and Pratt slug it out two wide for several laps with Pratt hangin it out high and Laubach stickin to the inside. Coming out of turn 2 Laubach finds the bite he needs and edges Pratt down the back stretch to emerge as the new leader heading into 3. Laubach and Pratt continue to slug it out with Pauch in 3rd, as Bottcher, Watt and Hendrickson battle for the top 5. With five to go, early race leader Ryan Watt develops mechanical problems and brings out the final caution of the evening. Laubach holds off Pratt on the restart to go on to the win, his 2nd Wingate Memorial victory and 20th career win. Pratt holds on to 2nd, a smoking Pauch falls back to 4th and Duane Howard racing back for 3rd from starting in the rear from a early race flat. Wade Hendrickson gets the hard Charger Award as he races to 4th from a 21st starting spot.

Laurel DE’s Kevin Collins out bests the field from a 20th starting spot to win the Wingate Memorial 358 sportsman 25 lap feature event. Jimmy Horton the IV sat on the pole for the start of the event and it quickly turned into a battle for the lead at the drop of the green with John Stangle. A couple of early cautions bunched up before the Sportsman settled in for some green flag racing. Stangle jumped out to an early lead with Horton the IV all over his bumper during the early stages. Eric Kormann looked like a man on a mission as he out dueled Ryan Forte and Jack Swain to move into the top three to make an early challenge on the leaders. Swain has problems and soon exits the track as Kormann gets a run on Horton into the 2nd spot as the yellow flies for Jarrad Miller and a flat tire on lap 8. On the restart Stangle is the leader with Kormann 2nd, Chuck Hopkins and Jesse Hill fill out the top 5. Kormann takes Stangle hi on the restart battling side by side before making his move to become the new leader by the half way mark. Stangle starts to lose ground as he begins to slip back into 2nd. Kevin Collins has now raced up on Stangle's bumper and takes the 2nd spot away and sets his sights on the leader Kormann as Stangle is now left behind to battle with Horton, Hopkins and Hill to stay in the top 5. Collins ever so slightly begins to gain ground on Kormann until five to go, leader Eric Kormann breaks on the backstretch and has to pull into the infield making hard charging Kevin Collins the new leader. Jesse Hill continues to do battle for 3rd with Stangle and Roberts has his hands full with Dan Cogdill for 3rd. With three to go, Ryan Forte looses a wheel and gets airborne to bring out the final yellow of the event. Collins holds off Horton on the restart for the win with Stangle 3rd, Hill 4th and Roberts fighting off Cogdill for the top 5 spot. Collins patience and perseverance pays off as he races from a 20th starting spot for his third feature win of the season.

HOWARD AND PRATT JR. CLAIM FIRECRACKER MODIFIED WINS AT BRIDGEPORT SPEEDWAY

By Michael Wisniewski

BRIDGEPORT, NJ (June 29, 2008) - On Firecracker Twin Twenty feature night at Bridgeport Speedway, Duane Howard of Oley, PA and Richie Pratt Jr. of Woodbury Heights, NJ each picked up a Big Block Modified feature win. In the 358 Sportsman contest, Jimmy Horton IV was the victor while Chuck Buchman took the checkered flag in the GM Sportsman race. Current point leader Rich Reider won the Outlaw Stock feature. Corey Anderson was the winner in the Rookie GM Sportsman race.

After two unsuccessful starts due to one caution and one red flag, the first twenty lap feature for the Big Block Modifieds got underway with Mike Franz taking the opening lap lead but Brian Kressley moved to the point on lap two. Duane Howard was quickly moving towards the front and had reached the fourth position by lap five when a caution was brought out for Dave Howard hitting the outside wall of turn one. On the restart, Duane Howard passed the top three cars like a rocketship to take the lead. Wade Hendrickson assumed the runner up spot on lap seven and was looking to mow down Howard. Howard encountered heavy traffic on lap sixteen and Hendrickson closed the gap significantly. With Howard still weaving his way through traffic, Hendrickson pulled beside the leader exiting turn two of lap eighteen but Howard maintained the lead the rest of the way for his thirty third career victory at Bridgeport Speedway. Hendrickson finished in second place followed by Kressley, Mike Iles and Franz.

With a twelve car inversion from the finish of the first feature, the second feature began in a similar fashion as two yellow flags slowed the start. On the third try, Gary Hager of Stewartsville, NJ broke out to the lead with Howard moving to second place on lap two. A caution on lap 3 for Ray Swinehart allowed Duane Howard to zoom by Hager on the restart for the lead. On the same restart, Wade Hendrickson, Richie Pratt Jr. and Steve Bottcher followed Howard around Hager. Howard appeared to be in cruise control until his car slowed on lap eleven entering turn one and he took his car into the pits. Hendrickson became the new leader with Pratt Jr., Bottcher, Hager and Iles behind him. On lap sixteen, Hendrickson appeared to briefly slow down coming out of turn four, which allowed Pratt Jr. to take the lead. Pratt Jr. led the remaining laps to capture his third win of 2008. After crossing the finish line in second place, Hendrickson appeared to have had a power steering failure and crashed hard into the turn one wall. Bottcher, Hager and Iles completed the top five. Chad James, Duane Howard and Brian Kressley were the heat race winners. After his Big Block Modified showed smoke in his heat race, Mike Iles used a back up car in winning the consolation event.

John Scarpati Jr. was the early leader in the 358 Sportsman race. Moving from his fourteenth starting spot, Jimmy Horton IV had moved to the fifth position on lap four. After two restarts on lap four and one on lap five, Horton IV was in the runner up spot and began to press Scarpati Jr. for the lead. On lap ten, Horton IV completed a turn one pass for the lead. Horton IV pulled away in the final laps for his second win of the year. Scarpati Jr. finished well in third after being passed by sixteenth place starter Jarrad Miller on lap seventeen. Sean Gunther and Dan Cogdill completed the top five. Rob Roberts, Don Bogey, and Guy Germano won the 358 Sportsman heat races.

Gino Postorivo was the early leader in the GM Sportsman feature. Numerous yellow flags caused a single file restart on lap five with Postorivo ahead of Chuck Buchman, Mike Barone, teammate David Bell and John Micek. Buchman began to close in on the leader and launched himself past Postorivo on lap eight. Barone wrestled the second position from Postorivo two laps later. Barone inched closer to the leader in the final laps but Buchman held on for his second win in 2008. Barone, Postorivo, John Micek and David Bell rounded out the top five.

In the Outlaw Stock race, Rich Reider shot to the lead immediately from his sixth starting spot. Reider led all fifteen laps and cruised on to his sixth win of the year. Tom Wills, Ken Watson, Jeff Dirkes and Draper Ellis filled out the top five.

Corey Anderson led all eight laps to claim his second Rookie GM Sportsman feature in 2008. Bob Burgess ran a strong race and finished in second place. Brandon Guyer came home in third place. Jason Bittner and Joey Milza completed the top five.

NOTES: With his primary ride unavailable, Jimmy Horton was the driver of Rusty Smith’s R2 Big Block Modified. After retiring early in the first Modified feature, Horton did not start the second feature. Chad James, last week’s feature winner, was running a strong fifth in the first Modified feature when the motor expired on lap fourteen. Unfortunately, James did not compete in the second Modified feature. John Scarpati Jr.’s third place finish in the 358 Sportsman event was with a 1999 Troyer chassis.

CHAD JAMES GETS HIS FIRST BIG BLOCK MODIFIED VICTORY AT BRIDGEPORT SPEEDWAY

BRIDGEPORT, NJ (June 22, 2008) - On a beautiful warm Saturday evening in Southern New Jersey, Chad James from Laurel, Delaware captured his first ever Big Block Modified main event in thrilling fashion. In the 358 Sportsman feature, Jesse Hill was the victor and his brother, Travis Hill, was the winner in the GM Sportsman event. Rich Reider won an exciting Outlaw Stock race. Jason Bittner claimed his second win of the season in the Rookie GM Sportsman contest.

In the twenty five lap feature event, Brian Kressley and Rich Acolia led the field of Big Block Modifieds to the green flag with Kressley assuming an early lead. Third position starter James grabbed the lead from Kressley on lap four. Richie Pratt Jr. vaulted to second place on lap five and began pursuing the leader. Sixteenth place starter Duane Howard had motored up to the third position by lap six. With these top contenders directly behind him, James continued to drive a masterful race on a very fast track as he turned a fast lap time of 108 MPH on lap seven. After a restart on lap eight, James still had the J&J Shop #27 machine in front with Pratt and Howard continuing their pursuit of the lead. A caution on lap seventeen for Steve Transue brought the field together one final time. With James choosing the inside position on the restart, he maintained the lead and held off a hard charging Pratt Jr. in the final laps for the victory. A jubilant first time winner, James climbed onto the roof of his car on the frontstretch and was greeted by a large contingent of family and crew members in victory lane. Pratt Jr., Duane Howard, Steve Bottcher and Wade Hendrickson completed the top five finishers. Heat winners were James, Pratt Jr., and Chic Cossaboone.

Bill Klingmeyer seized the lead in the 358 Sportsman event from his pole starting position and survived several cautions to lead the first thirteen laps. From his ninth starting spot, Jesse Hill advanced to the second position on lap four. Erik Kormann passed Hill for the runner up spot on lap six but Hill returned the favor 2 laps later. Following a lap ten restart, Hill continued to close the gap and gained the top spot on lap fourteen. Hill led the remaining laps for his second victory of the season. Running a very strong race, Klingmeyer finished in second place. Erik Kormann came home in third position followed by Kevin Collins and Jarrad Miller. Tom Solderich, Kormann, and Klingmeyer were the winners of the 358 Sportsman heat races.
In the GM Sportsman contest, veteran driver Rich Jackson sprinted out from his front row starting position and led the first four laps. Following a lap four restart, Jon Haegele passed Jackson for the lead. Hill moved to the second position on lap 5 and ascended to the top spot on the next lap. Hill upheld the lead for the remaining laps to get his second victory of the year. Pat Hires finished in the runner up spot. Haegele, John Micek and rookie Corey Anderson filled out the top five. Hill and Haegele were winners in the GM Sportsman qualifying events.

Bill Miller, Ken Watson, Tom Wills and Rich Reider put on a racing display in the Outlaw Stock feature. With Miller and Watson swapping the top spot during the first eight laps, Reider and Wills maintained a very close pursuit of the top two runners. After moving to second on lap nine, Reider wrestled the lead from Watson on lap ten. Reider pulled away in the final laps for his fifth checkered flag. Watson held on for second place. Miller, Wills and Bob Hopely completed the top five.

Jason Bittner led all eight laps and became the first repeat winner of 2008 in the GM Rookie Sportsman feature. Brandon Guyer finished a strong second. Bob Burgess, Tom Moore Jr. and Joey Milza rounded out the top five.

NOTES: Mechanical woes continue to plague Jimmy Horton this season. Driving the Lincoln Auto Body Modified, Horton’s engine showed considerable smoke in his heat race and he did not participate in the feature. Ray Swinehart returned to action but his night ended with engine problems during his heat race. Veteran Sportsman driver Jack Swain made his first Bridgeport Speedway start in 2008 and finished ninth in the feature.

Wade Hendrickson’s Jakes Marine sponsored Modified survives a hot and steamy Big Block Modified feature on a Tacky Fast Bridgeport clay Saturday night to win his 3rd of the season. Laurel DE’s Kevin Collins races to his 2nd feature win of the season, dedicates win to his recuperating father in the 358 Sportsman Feature event. Flemington, NJ’s John Micek reigns supreme in the GM Sunoco Sportsman slug fest feature to earn his 2nd Feature Win of the season. “Rapid” Rich Reider out duels Ken Watson Sr, for his fourth win of the season in the outlaw stock feature event. Bob Burgess gets his 1st win from a 5th starting spot in the GM Rookie Feature.

Lawrenceville, NJ’s Wade “The Flyin Farmer” Hendrickson races from deep in the field to capture his 3rd Feature Win of the Season. Hendrickson’s Jakes Marine sponsored Modified survives a hot and steamy Big Block Modified feature on a Fast Tacky Bridgeport clay Saturday night with 2 and 3-wide racing through out the corners in the feature event. The #19B of Brian Kressley started on the pole for the start of the event and quickly jumped out as the race leader. Deep in the pack Jimmie Chester, Ryan Watt, Chic Cossaboone, Wade Hendrickson and Jimmy Horton begin dissecting their way into the top 10. Kressley starts to open up a nice lead followed by Scott Irwin and Bob Sarkisian before the #14 of Watt breaks going into turns one on lap 5. With the field lined back for a restart Kressley resumes the lead at the drop of the green with Irwin 2nd, Sarkisian, third, followed by Steve Bottcher and Ray Swinehart. Sarkisian quickly uses the restart to his advantage as he moves by Irwin for 2nd followed by Bottcher and Gary Hager. Heat appears to become a factor as several drivers including Mike Frantz, Don Barone, Jimmie Horton and Chad James have their nights cut short by the half way mark. Hendrickson has now started to work on the top 5 driver of Hager. Bottcher is now starting to work on Sarkisian for the 2nd spot and doesn’t take long to make the pass. Iles begins to make a charge on the top five with Hendrickson close behind. A mid race yellow bunches the field for a restart which works in Hendrickson’s favor. Iles and Hendrickson quickly take advantage and move into he top 5 as the leader Kressley gets a right rear flat and coasts to stop as Bottcher moves into the lead. As the field goes back to green, Hendrickson jumps into the 2nd spot, Iles battles Sarkisian for 3rd followed by Cossaboone and Swinehart into the top 5. Hendrickson now has his sights on the new leader of Bottcher and doesn’t take long to start applying pressure. Bottcher appears to be faster on the backstretch but Hendrickson seems to reel him in through 3 and 4 and down the front Stretch. As Hendrickson slowly reels in Bottcher the two begin a 2wide battle in the corners with Bottcher Hi and Hendrickson staying on the Low side at both ends of the speedway. Hendrickson finally get the edge and comes out of turn 4 as the new race leader. Hard charging 3rd place Mike Iles breaks heading down the front stretch coming to a stop in turn 4 bringing out a late race yellow with 5 to go. Hendrickson jumps back out to the leader from his inside starting spot holding off Steve Bottcher to take the checkered for the third time this season. Bottcher finishes 2nd, Chic Cossaboone 3rd, Richie Pratt Jr. and Jimmie Chester finish out the top 5. Wade Henderickson’s victory tied him for 4th all time on the Bridgeport feature win list with Kenny Brightbill with 36.

An emotional Kevin Collins from Laurel DE races to his 2nd feature win of the season, dedicates to his recuperating father in the 358 Sportsman Feature event Saturday Night. Reigleville, PA’s John Pursell makes his return the 5/8th mile clay and starts on front row with pole sitter Tom Miller for feature event. Pursell quickly jumped into a battle with pole sitter of Miller before a caution flew for a spinning John Scarlatti on the backstretch. On the restart, Pursell gets a great start and races Moore to the corners to become the new leader. Kevin Collins who started deep in the field in 12th soon began to work on traffic front his way to the front as the early laps begin to sly by. Pursell quickly began to open up a sizeable lead on the rest of the field with Miller in 2nd and John Kelly in 3rd. The big battle on the track for the feature was between the drivers of Eric Kormann, Randy Yaple, Jarrad Miller, Horton IV and Chuck Hopkins with the six swapping positions many times through out the event. Hopkins put on a Hi Line, rim riding show as he preferred the hi-side during the slug fest. Meanwhile Collins methodically worked the field racing his way into the top 3 but it looked like Pursell was going to be out of reach until a late race yellow bunched the filed for a single file restart. On the restart Pursell is your leader but Collins sits up on the wheel and keeps on Purcell’s bumper as the hit the corners. Collins gets a run coming off turn 2 taking Pursell 2 wide into 3 and 2 wide through out with Collins winning the battle com9ing of 4 as the new leader with 4 to go. Collins holds on to win his 2nd feature of the season with Pursell 2nd, Tom Miller holding on to 3rd, John Kelly 4th and Chuck Hopkins racing hard into the top 5 spot. Hopkins gets the hard charging award for the Rim Riding Show from 15th starting spot into the top 5.
“Rapid” Rich Reider out duels Ken Watson Sr, for his fourth win of the season in the outlaw stock feature event. The #9Bill Miller jumped out to a quick lead at the drop of the green the dynamic duo of Watson and Reider put their weekly slug fest as the two worked their way through traffic to charge to the front. Reider quickly took charge of Watson as the raced to the front passing Miller for the lead. A scary incident occurred mid race for #80 0of Ben Niedhardt. As Niedhardt exited turn 4 his outlaw stock erupted into flames with and apparent oil fired and coasted to a stop in the front stretch infield bringing out a RED flag condition. Neidhardt exited the car as the speedway safety crews quickly extinguished the fire. Reider held off Watson for his 4th win of the season, Watson 2nd Jim Honeker 3rd and Bob Dooly and Bob Hopely rounding out the top 5.
Flemington, NJ’s John Micek reigns supreme in the GM Sunoco Sportsman slug fest feature to earn his 2nd Feature Win of the season. As usual the GM Sunoco Sportsman class put on another exciting feature event often racing 3wide Saturday night on the Bridgeport clay. Several cars got a littlel over eager as a multi car altercation occurred in turn 4 before a lap could be completed. The #98 of Michael Cogdill started on the pole and looked like the man to beat early as he jumped out to the lead at the drop of the green. The race quickly turned into a any ones race as the top 5 slugged it out chasing down the leader of Cogdill. The #61 of John Haegele and Micek ran side by side for several laps swapping positions several times at both at both ends of the speedway. The race eventually turns into a 3 car battle for the lead between Cogdill, Micek and Haegele. The top 3 continue side by side action with neither able to knock Cogdill out of the top spot for most of the event. A late race yellow on lap 10 bunches up the field one more time as a car spins in turns 3 and 4. Cogdill jumps back out to the lead but enters turn 2 a bit to high and has to get out of the gas. Micek takes advantage and snags the lead heading down the back stretch. Mecik holds on for the few remaining laps to capture a very hard earned 2nd feature win of the season. Haegele makes a last lap pass on Cogdill for 2nd with Travis Hill 4th and Mike Barone taking the top 5 spot.

By Michael Wisniewxki

BRIDGEPORT, NJ (May 25, 2008) - In twin twenty lap features for the Big Block Modifieds, Steve Durand and Mike Iles each claimed a victory at Bridgeport Speedway on Saturday, May 24. Curt Michael took home his second victory of the season in the URC Sprint feature. In the 358 Sportsman main event, Chuck Hopkins of Williamstown, NJ was the victor. Chuck Buchman won the GM Sportsman feature.

In the first twenty lap modified feature, Durand, a resident of Mahwah, NJ, blasted from his second starting position past pole sitter Brett Hoffman into the lead. Iles, who started in the fourteenth, quickly moved to the third position on lap five just behind second place runner Bob Sarkisian. Iles passed Sarkisan on lap seven and tried to catch the front running Durand. Durand continued to lead the race and began to encounter lapped traffic on lap fifteen. Iles drew up to Durand’s rear bumper on lap 16. On the final lap, Iles pulled along the inside of Durand on the final turn but Durand held on for his second career big Block Modified victory. Iles, Sarkisian, Jimmy Chester and Chic Cossaboone rounded out the top five.

For the second twenty lap modified feature, Gary Hager and Jimmy Horton sat on the front row and Hager jumped out to the lead. Hager, who hails from Stewartsville, NJ, led the first twelve laps. From his tenth starting spot, Iles had maneuvered his #711 modified to the fourth position by lap six. Iles passed Wade Hendrickson on lap eight and Jimmy Horton on lap ten to move into second place. Iles caught Hager on lap twelve and passed him on lap thirteen for the lead. Iles led the remaining laps for his first checkered flag in 2008. Hager, Hendrickson, Cossaboone, and Horton filled out the top five. Heat winners for the Big Block Modifieds were Durand, Brian Kressley and Steve Bottcher. Don Barone won the consolation event.

In the URC Sprint main event, front row starter Michael led the initial eight laps. Michael entered lapped traffic on lap six and second place runner Chris Coyle began to inch closer to Michael. Coyle took the lead on lap nine and appeared to be on his way to victory lane. Several cautions brought the field back tightly and Michael was able to regain the lead on lap seventeen following a restart. Coyle fought back valiantly on the final lap but appeared to lose traction in turn two and Michael went on to claim his thirty-seventh career URC victory. Coyle, Justin Collett, Randy West and JJ Grasso completed the top five. A strong and competitive field of thirty-two URC sprints invaded Bridgeport Speedway with heat race victories going to Michael, Scott Pursell and Coyle. Mark Bitner won the Don Ott "B" Main.

Tom Miller quickly charged to the lead in the 358 Sportsman feature and led the first two laps. Following a restart on lap two, Chuck Hopkins grabbed the point by passing Miller. Hopkins survived numerous cautions and drove off to his first victory in 2008. Jarrad Miller finished in the second position. Jimmy Horton IV, Brett Ballard and Eric Kormann rounded out the top five. Dan Cogdill, Bob Lineman Jr. and Hopkins were winners in the 358 Sportsman heats. Guy Germano picked up the victory in the consolation race.

In the GM sportsman feature, Chuck Buchman took advantage of his second starting position and assumed the lead on lap one. Leading all twelve laps of the curfew shortened event, Buchman survived a late race challenge from John Micek. Rounding out the top five were Travis Hill, Pat Hires and Jon Haegele. Micek and Buchman were victors in the qualifying events.

NOTES: Veteran Modified drivers Ed Firth and Dave Stonebreaker made their first starts in 2008. After finishing in third place in the second Big Block Modified heat, Richie Pratt Jr. brought out his back up ride and re-qualified through the consolation event.

SPRING RAINS SOAK BRIDGEPORT SPEEDWAY’S MAY 17th COLLEGE NIGHT
By Michael Wisniewski

BRIDGEPORT, NJ (May 18, 2008) - Spring 2008 has been unkind to Bridgeport Speedway. The latter part of this past week saw additional rain that persisted into late Friday night. On Saturday May 17, the Bridgeport Speedway track crew worked diligently and tirelessly to get the track in shape for General Floor’s College Night featuring a Smashmasters Demolition Derby. Unfortunately, the latest precipitation created a very soggy racetrack. Following a meeting among officials and drivers, Bridgeport Speedway management cancelled the program due to the soggy track conditions by citing the importance of driver’s safety and integrity of racing equipment. As an appreciation for the race teams, which did travel to Bridgeport Speedway on May 17, it was announced that those drivers would receive fifty competition points added to their 2008 point total.

“Starlit Saturday” night racing will resume on Saturday, May 24 at 6:30 PM with a very special Memorial Day weekend race program featuring twin twenty lap features for the Big Block Modifieds. Also, the URC Sprints return to the ultra fast 5/8th mile dirt oval for their second appearance of 2008. Plus, 358 Sportsman and GM Sportsman will be in competition. General Admission for this super holiday show is priced at $22 for adults. As always, kids 12 and under will be admitted free to the grandstand. General Admission wristband holders from the cancelled May 17 show will be charged $6 for this special event upon return of their unused wristband. Unused May 17 wristbands may also be redeemed towards purchasing General Admission for events scheduled for May 31 or June 7.

Billed ‘The Fastest Dirt Track in the East’, Bridgeport Speedway is a banked 5/8th mile dirt oval, featuring a dirt 1/4 mile oval embedded in the center, and is located in Southern New Jersey -- just minutes from Pennsylvania and Delaware at exit 14 off of I-295.
