Tim Senic wins 2nd Budweiser LM feature of 2008 at the Elkins Speedway

By Bob Reed

Kerens, WV. 8/1/2008. From his outside front row starting position Tim Senic, Elkins, led all 25 laps of the Budweiser LM feature for his 2nd win in 2008 at the Elkins Speedway

At the drop of the green Senic powered around polesitter Billy Holbert going through turns 1 & 2 and took the lead going down the back straight on lap 1 and never looked back. Holbert chased him the entire 25 laps but never made a challenge for the lead. Fourth starting Butch McGill took 3rd at the start and challenged Holbert for several laps until being passed by Chuck Harper on lap 17. Charlie George started 9th and moved through the field and finally passed Joe Loudin for 5th on lap 11 and remained there to the finish.

At the finish Senic had a lapped car plus almost a straight lead over Holbert who was followed by Harper, McGill and George. Heats to Senic and Holbert.

Notes: Senic’s #S2 LM is a Rocket chassis powered by a Draime Racing engine and sponsored by Roy’s RV SuperCenter, Residential Creations, TRE, Hoosier and Roy’s Home Center.

Notes: Only 11 cars tonight with all 11 starting the feature. Only 10 completed all 25 laps. 3 cautions slowed the action. Hard charger was Charlie George who started 9th and finished 5th, a gain of 4 spots.

Kevin Keene, Belington, passed leader Mike Allen on lap 2 and led the final 19 laps for his 2nd J&M Grafix SL feature and first since opening night at the Elkins Speedway.

Veteran John Tallman followed Keene past Allen and challenged him in almost every turn on every lap. Tallman would dive under Keene in the turns but Keene would not get off the top and his momentum allowed him to come off the turn every time with the lead. This went on lap after lap and was only stopped by the many cautions by the cars at the rear of the field.

Allen who was making his first trip to Elkins held on to 3rd through lap12 when Anthony Arbogast got by him. He then ran 4th until the final laps when he had a rear tire go down and he dropped out with a 9th place finish.

At the finish Keene won with Tallman glued to his rear bumper in 2nd, Arbogast 3rd, Cody Hardesty 4th and Brad Harris 5th. Heats to Tallman and Keene.

Notes: Only 10 cars with all 10 starting the feature. 8 were running after 20 laps. 6 cautions slowed the action.

Notes: The #21 of Mike Allen, Oak Hill was the only new car tonight.

Brian Barker, Belington, outraced Joe Wrona on the start for the lead and then held off Jim Bendishaw over the final 9 laps for his first ever Sigler Fabrication SS feature win at the Elkins Speedway.

Barker and last week’s winner Wrona led the 19 car field to the green with Barker taking the lead but it was short as Spec Yokum and Ricky Vest tangled to turn 2 bringing out the first of 5 cautions. On the 2nd start Barker repeated his first start and beat Wrona into turn 1 and led the first lap. He held off Wrona for the first 5 laps until Dusty Swecker and Jim Bendishaw got by Wrona. Swecker ran 2nd for 3 laps until suddenly going pitside and turning 2nd over to Jim Bendishaw.

The veteran Bendishaw then tried every move that he had to get around Barker but Barker used his superior power to make up for his few slip-ups and held off Bendishaw for his first ever win.

Bendishaw finished a very close 2nd with Wrona 3rd, John Redshaw 4th and Jim Byers 5th. Heats to Spec Yokum, Barker and Jim Bendishaw.

Notes: 21 cars in the pits with 19 starting the feature. Only 11 cars running after 15 laps. 5 cautions slowed the action. Hard charger was Jimbo Owens who started 19th and finished 9th, a gain of 10 spots.

Dickie Tharp led all 12 laps of the 4 Cyl feature for his 2nd win in a row and 3rd win of 2008 at the Elkins Speedway. Lester Jenkins followed him the entire distance to finish 2nd while Steve Sisler was 3rd with Alan Sisler 4th and Travis Mullenax 5th.

Notes: Only 9 cars in the pits with 5 starting the feature. Only 4 completed 12 laps.

Zak Kimbrew led every lap of the Mini Wedge feature for his 2nd win of 2008 at the Elkins Speedway. Garret Paugh was 2nd followed by Megan Davis, Ryan Watson and Scott Perine. Heats to Zak Kimbrew and Paugh.

Notes: 14 Mini Wedges tonight. New Mini Wedges tonight were the #21A of Logan Allen and the #8 of Paije Bragg.

Chuck Harper wins RH ‘Dick’ Armstrong Memorial at the Elkins Speedway

By Bob Reed

Kerens, WV. 7/25/2008. Chuck Harper, Beverly led all but lap one of the RH Armstrong Memorial at the Elkins Speedway for his 2nd win of 2008 at the speedway.

Harper and Charlie George led the 21 car field to the green with Harper getting the jump on George but 7th starting Ricky Williams spun in turn 3 collecting 9th starting Paul Wilmoth Jr. which sent both to the tail.

On the 2nd attempt at a start George took advantage of his outside starting position and out raced Harper and led the first lap followed by Harper, Booper Bare, Joe Loudin, Jarrod Hawkins, Mike Balzano, Robbie Blair, Butch McGill, Tim Senic and Steve Wilmoth.

This was the only lap that any one else would lead as Harper got by George on lap 2 and never was headed again.

During the early stages Loudin was dropping back while the rest of the top ten remained fairly steady. Harper had began lapping the rear of the field on lap 10. Paul Wilmoth and Ricky William were charging from the rear and on lap 14 when Skip Hare brought out caution #2 Wilmoth was 13th just behind brother Steve while Williams was 14th. At this point all 21 cars were still running.

Then on lap 17 coming through turn 3 Wilmoth suddenly shut the car off as something went wrong and he coasted to the pits. Williams continued to charge but on lap 25 was involved in a wreck in turn 2 with Loudin and Andy Bond and went to the pits.

At this point Harper led George, Balzano, Bare, Gordon, McGill, Hawkins, Senic, Blair and Steve Wilmoth. On the first couple laps after the green flew George would get under Harper in the turns but in a couple laps Harper would pull out to a comfortable lead and would never be challenged. Over the final 15 laps only 2 cautions on lap 31 for Senic when he blew a motor and stopped on the front straight and then on lap 34 for a spinning Ron Clevenger.

Harper had almost a straight lead over George at the checkered who had a 5 or 6 car length lead over Balzano who was followed by Booper Bare and Bob Gordon. Heats to Bare, George and Loudin.

Notes: 21 cars in the pits with all 21 starting the feature. 15 cars running after 40 laps. 7 cautions slowed the action. Hard charger was Billy Holbert who started 21st and finished 11th, a gain of 10 spots.

Notes: Mike Balzano, Robbie Blair and Ricky Williams were at Elkins for the first time in 2008.

Notes: Harper’s #00H is a Rocket chassis and is powered by a Pro Power Chevrolet engine. His sponsors are J Rod Vending, Rick Sturms Motorsports, Triple H Const, Styer Curbing, Leslie Equipment Co, Millers Used Cars and Hoosier.

Eighteen year old Aaron Barley, Beckley, made his 2nd visit of 2008 to the Elkins Speedway and won his 2nd J&M Grafix SL feature as he led all 20 laps from the pole for the win.

On the first lap coming through turn 2 outside polesitter Tom Harris almost spun and the entire field took evasive action with everyone continuing. This allowed Barley and 3rd starting Greg Roberson, Waynesboro, VA, to jump to a good sized lead with Tom Harris 3rd, Brad Harris 4th and Chad Green 5th. Lap 2 & 3 brought the action to a standstill as 2 cautions bunched the field and eliminated Green, Mike Sturm and Kevin Keene. Arbogast was also in a tangle but with a bent up car lasted until lap 13 before going to the pits. Brad Jarrell was also involved in a lap 2 wreck and lasted until lap 8 before going pitside.

While all of this was going on Barley kept going on and holding off Roberson. Finally when Arbogast went pitside on lap 13 only 4 cars were running with Barley leading Roberson, Tallman and Brad Harris. Barley held his line on the top and Roberson tried him every lap on the bottom but could never get past. At the checkered he was at the rear quarter panel of Barley. Heats to Green and Tallman.

Notes: Only 10 cars in the pits with all 10 starting the feature. Only 4 running after 20 laps.

Seventeen year old Joe Wrona, Smithfield, PA won his first ever feature when he led all 15 laps to capture the Sigler Fabrication SS feature.

At the drop of the green Wrona took the lead with Johnny Singleton 2nd. After a restart on lap 2 multiple winner Dusty Swecker, who had started 6th, took over 2nd and began chasing Wrona but as the race ran caution free the final 12 laps Wrona increased his lead and won comfortably over Swecker with Brian Blake 3rd, last week’s winner Teresa Vaughn 4th and Singleton 5th. Heats to Vaughn and Swecker.

Notes: 14 cars in the pits with all 14 starting the feature. Only 9 completed all 15 laps. Only 2 cautions slowed the action. Hard charger was Dusty Swecker who started 6th and finished 2nd, a gain of 4 spots.

Notes: The #15 of Joe Wrona, Smithfield, PA was the only new car tonight.

Dickie Tharp led all 10 laps of the 4 Cyl feature for his 2nd win of 2008. Only 5 cars tonight so no heats. Tharp bested Randy Linaburg, Lester Jenkins, Zack Williams and Daniel Simpson.

Notes: The #2 of Lester Jenkins made his first visit of 2008 to the speedway.

John Sinnett won his 2nd consecutive and 2nd of the year as he led all 10 laps of the Hornet feature. Donnie Wamsley and Walt Foster chased him the entire distance but Sinnett could never be passed. Sinnett won with Donnie Wamsley 2nd, Foster 3rd, David Bunnell 4th and Jason Moore 5th.

Notes: Only7 cars so no heats.

In Mini Wedge action Ryan Watson passed Garrett Paugh on the final lap for his 2nd feature win of 2008. Paugh ended up 2nd with Zak Kimbrew 3rd, Megan Davis 4th and James Nelson 5th. Heats to Paugh and Zak Kimbrew.

Notes: 14 Mini Wedges in the pits tonight.

Paul Wilmoth wins 6th Budweiser LM Feature of 2008 at the Elkins Speedway

By Bob Reed

Kerens, WV. 7/11/2008. From his inside pole starting position Paul Wilmoth, Clarksburg led all 25 laps of the Budweiser LM feature for his 6th win of 2008 at the Elkins Speedway and 13th of 2008 in Central WV.

On the first attempt at a start 11th starting Shawn Poling stopped at the end of the back straight bringing out the first caution of the night. At the same time Bob Gordon pulled into the infield with a broken driveshaft. Poling returned on the tail while Gordon was towed to the pits ending his night.

On the next start both Wilmoth and 3rd starting Butch McGill took off leaving outside polesitter Joe Loudin in 3rd followed by 4th starting Billy Holbert, Skip Hare, Richard Frazier, Charlie George, Tim Senic, Steve Booth and Jamie McCloud. The field remained in this order until lap 3 when George, Poling and Josh Coffman tangled in turn 4 with all 3 going to the pits.

The running order was now Wilmoth, McGill, Loudin, Holbert, Hare, Senic, Frazier, Booth, McCloud and Sampson. On the restart Senic got by Hare but this was the only change for the next few laps.

Wilmoth increased his lead over the next 13 laps and began lapping cars on lap 16. On lap12 Holbert got by Loudin for 3rd and on lap 15 by McGill for 2nd. On lap 19 both Loudin and Senic got by a fading McGill but the next lap Senic slipped in turn 1 & 2 and McGill, Hare and Frazer got by him. Then the 3rd caution flew on lap 21 when Sampson and McCloud tangled. This bunched the field for the final 5 laps.

When the green flew Holbert challenged Wilmoth for a lap or two until Wilmoth got his rhythm back and he began building up his lead again. At the checkered he had a 10 car length lead over Holbert who had almost the same lead over 3rd place Loudin. In the final 5 laps Senic was charging and was making up for his mistake but made another when he lost it on the last lap. He went across the line as the last car running. McGill ended up 4th with Skip Hare 5th. Heats to Wilmoth and George.

Notes: 14 cars started the feature with only 9 running 25 laps. 3 cautions slowed the action.

Brad Harris, Belington, won his first J&M Grafix SL feature of 2008 by leading all 20 laps from the pole position.

Three cautions slowed the action before a lap was in the books. On try #1 Derrick Blake, Tom Harris and Nick Corley got together in turn 2. On try #2 Rick Sturm spun in turn 2 and finally on try #3 Kevin Keene spun in turn 1. Try #4 was single file with Brad Harris leading the field followed by Shane Hitt who trailed him the entire distance.

Chad Green was 3rd until lap 3 when he, Nick Corley and Kris Southern brought out a caution which sent both to the pits. John Tallman then assumed third and harassed Hitt the rest of the distance. Arbogast came back from the tail for a 4th place finish while Corley was 5th. Heats to Green and Tallman.

Notes: 13 cars in the pits with 12 starting the feature. Only 7 running after 20 laps. 5 cautions slowed the action. All 5 cautions were in the first 2 laps. Hard charger was Nick Corley who started 11th and finished 5th, a gain of 6 spots.

Teresa Vaughn won her first ever PS feature at the Elkins Speedway. Vaughn assumed the lead on a lap 13 caution when leader Ricky Vest and Spec Yokum got together in turn 3 while fighting for the lead and both received flat tires.

Vaughn then held off Randy Thornhill for 2 laps for the win with Samantha Rogers 3rd for her best finish ever, Mack Wimer 4th and Jimbo Owens 5th. Heats to Yokum and Thornhill.

Notes: 15 cars in the pits with 14 starting the feature. Only 6 cars running after 15 laps.

Notes: This race was a demo derby from the first lap. On lap one Thornhill and Dusty Swecker who were on the front row got together coming off turn 2 with Swecker spinning. Brian Blake and Brandon Kerr made contact with Swecker. While they were stopped Robin Maxson hit the rear of Swecker full speed. Swecker’s #21 was heavily damaged. Several other wrecks resulted in much body damage with several cars being towed or pushed off.

Terry Styer made his 2nd visit of the year and won the 4 Cyl feature as he led all 12 laps. Dickie Tharp and Dave Summers chased him the entire distance but could never get close enough to challenge for the lead. Last weeks winner, Dave Gabbert and 2 time previous winner, Thomas Simpson were involved in a lap 2 caution which eliminated Simpson with right front damage.

Gabbert did recover for a 4th place while Steve Sisler recovered from a lap 6 spin for a 5th place finish. Heats to Styer and Steve Sisler.

Notes: 12 cars in the pits with 11 starting the feature. Only 8 running after 12 laps. Hard charger was Dave Summers who started 9th and finished 3rd, a gain of 6 spots.

John Sennett won his first Hornet feature of 2008 at the Elkins Speedway. Sennett passed David Wamsley on lap 2 and led the final 9 laps for the win. David Wamsley was 2nd followed by Eddie Stanley, Rob Conrad and David Bunnell. Heat winner was Donnie Wamsley.

Tim Senic wins first LM feature of 2008 at the Elkins Speedway

By Bob Reed

Kerens, WV. 7/11/2008. Tim Senic, Elkins took the lead on a lap 22 caution when leader Bob Gordon spun in turn 3 and collected 2nd running Billy Holbert. Senic, who had started 7th was charging toward the front, assumed the lead and led the final 4 laps for his first Budweiser LM win at the Elkins Speedway since May 25, 2007.

Steve Booth and Holbert led the 17 car field to the green with Holbert taking the lead followed by Booth, Butch McGill, Bob Gordon, Chuck Harper, Charlie George, Senic, Paul Wilmoth, Joe Loudin and Brad Hudson. On lap 2 McGill took 2nd while Wilmoth dropped Senic to 8th. Holbert began building up a big lead while Gordon was on the move as he took over 3rd on lap 3 and then 2nd on lap 9. Senic and Wilmoth were also going forward as both had gotten by Harper and Booth.

The first caution of the night flew on lap 13 when Richard Frazier and Josh Coffman tangled in turn 2. This took away Holbert’s big lead and put Gordon on his tail. At this point the top 10 was Holbert, Gordon, McGill, George, Wilmoth, Senic, Harper, Loudin, Hawkins and Hamrick. All 17 cars were still in action with only Ron Clevenger 1 lap down.

When the green flew it only took Gordon two laps until he passed Holbert for the lead and he then began building up a big lead of his own while Holbert also had a big lead over the rest of the field. Gordon had almost a straight lead and was catching the end of the field when he entered lap 3 on the 22nd lap and just looped it. Gordon was sitting crossways in the middle of the track. Holbert tried to miss him by going above but his car slid into Gordon and he was involved which sent him to the tail. Senic who was almost a half straight behind Holbert slowly went by the two cars and assumed the lead when the green came out.

Senic drove away from Butch McGill to win by 5 car lengths for his first win of 2008 at the Elkins Speedway. McGill was 2nd followed by George, Harper and Jerrod Hawkins.

Heats to George, Gordon and Wilmoth.

Notes: 18 cars in the pits with 17 starting the feature. 16 were running after 25 laps. Only Gordon dropped out after his spin and contact from Holbert. Only 2 cautions. Hard charger was Skip Hare who started 17th and finished 10th, a gain of 7 spots.

Notes: Senic’s #S2 is a Chevrolet powered Rocket and is sponsored by Roy’s RV Supercenter, TRE, Residential Creations and Hoosier.

Joel Prosser making his first visit of 2008 to the Elkins Speedway captured the J&M Grafix SL 40 Lap Special worth $600 to the winner.

Tom Harris and Prosser led the field to the green with Harris taking the lead over Prosser, Kevin Keene, Brad Harris and Chad Green. Through the first 20 laps the only change in this order was when John Tallman got by Chad Green on lap 3 for 5th. The rest of the field couldn’t keep running as most of them either were causing cautions or dropping out. At the 20 lap mark only 8 cars were running.

Then on lap 21 coming through turns 3 & 4 the driveshaft came out of the leader’s car and he drifted to a stop. This handed the lead to Prosser which he never relinquished.
Tallman took advantage of cautions as on the restarts he would get by the car in front of him. He used this to his advantage to get by both Brad Harris and Kevin Keene to get to 2nd from where he pressed Prosser over the final 17 laps. He tried every trick that he knew to get Prosser to move off the top but Prosser never made a mistake and held on for the win. At the checkered Tallman was at the rear quarter of Prosser but Prosser had the win with Tallman 2nd, Keene 3rd, Jim Cochran 4th and Chad Green 5th. Heats to Green and Nick Corley.

Notes: Only 12 cars in the pits with all 12 starting the feature. Only 8 running after 40 laps. Only 6 ran all 40 laps. Hard charger was Tallman who started 7th and finished 2nd, a gain of 5 spots.

Notes: Prosser’s #77 is a KOM Legal SL and draws its power from Miller Equipment Co Racing Engine parts. It is sponsored by Dutch Pantry Restaurant, Crown Services, AMSOIL and Hoosier.

Todd Dennis in his first visit to Elkins in several years passed leader Teresa Vaughn on lap 8 and led the final 8 laps for his first ever PS win at the Speedway. Vaughn hung on for 2nd while last week’s winner Dusty Swecker was 3rd with Ricky Vest 4th and Speck Yokum 5th. Heats to Dennis and Swecker.

Notes: Todd Dennis is the son of former Elkin’s track champion and many time winner L.J. Dennis of Markleysburg, PA. Back in the 60s and 70s L.J. drove the famous Rainbow ‘7’ which was owned by Dick Armstrong.

Notes: 17 cars in the pits with 15 starting the feature. Only 11 running after 15 laps. Only 1 caution slowed the action. Hard charger was Ricky Vest who started 13th and finished 4th, a gain of 9 spots.

Dave Gabbert won his first 4 Cyl feature in 2008 by leading all 12 laps from the pole. Dave Summers challenged him for the first 4 laps but almost spun on lap 5 and dropped back. Steve Sisler took 2nd for one lap until Dickie Tharp passed him and began challenging Gabbert but Gabbert fended off all challenges. He led by several car lengths over Tharp with Sisler 3rd, Summers 4th and Alan Sisler 5th. Heats to Travis Mullenax and Tharp.

Notes: 11 cars in the pits with10 starting the feature. Only 7 finished. Only 1 caution. Hard charger was Alan Sisler who started 10th and finished 5th, a gain of 5 spots.

Notes: New cars tonight were the #D1 of Dave Gabbert, the #15 of Dave Summers and the #1B of Bob Moore. Gabbert in 2005 won many features with this same car.

Ryan Watson won his first ever Mini Wedge feature over a 13 car field.

Butch McGill captures 8th Annual Chuck Gear Memorial at the Elkins Speedway

By Bob Reed

Kerens WV. 7-5-2008.

Butch McGill, West Union driving the Leggett Motorsports Ford powered Rocket LM made his first victory of 2008 at the Elkins Speedway a big one as he captured the 35 lap 8th Annual Chuck Gear Memorial and its $3008 winners prize.

Shawn Poling and McGill led the field to the green but 3 yellows cut the field by 4 before an official lap was recorded. On the first caution Poling lost it in turn 2 and collected Steve Wilmoth, Dusty Hamrick and Gary Lyle. Poling retired while Wilmoth went pitside and changed a rear tire. On the second one Skip Hare and Lyle tangled in turn 2. Both continued but Hare retirined after only running 4 laps. The third one involved Kris Southern, Tracy Sampson and Brad Hudson with all three done for the night.

On the fourth try at a start McGill and Chuck Harper led the field as Wilmoth who would have inherited the outside pole after all of these cautions was now on the tail. McGill jumped to an immediate lead over Harper with Joe Loudin 3rd, Jacob Hawkins 4th and Senic 5th.

The top 5 remained in this order until lap 22 when Hawkins finally got past Loudin for 3rd and began challenging Harper. The action was in the 2nd 5 as Dusty Hamrick who had gone to the tail on lap 1 was charging. On lap 2 he was 11th, the next lap he was 10th and almost a straight behind the 9th place car of Steve Wilmoth. By the 20th lap he had run down Wilmoth and was challenging him. On lap 23 he got by Wilmoth for 7th and on lap 32 passed Charlie George for 6th where he finished.

In the meantime Hawkins who was challenging Harper finally got by him for 2nd on lap 24 and began chasing McGill. Several times he showed McGill his nose in the turns but never made a real serious challenge for the lead. Harper faded at the finish as Senic nipped him on the final lap for 3rd.

At the checkered McGill led Hawkins, Senic, Harper and Loudin. Heats. To Wilmoth and Poling.

Notes: McGill’s #1MC is a Rocket chassis and is Ford powered. His sponsors are Jenkins Ford, KFC, EC Construction, Buckhannon Discount Tire, NAPA and Poske’s.

Notes: 16 cars started the feature with 10 running after 35 laps. 6 cautions slowed the action. Hard charger was Jacob Hawkins who started 8th and finished 2nd, a gain of 6 places.

Notes: One new car tonight was the #10 of Gary Lyle, Hyde Park, Pa.

Chad Green, Wendel, won his first ever J&M Grafix SL feature when he passed leader Mike O’Brien on lap 4 and led the final 17 laps for the win O’Brien held off Anthony Arbogast for his best finish ever in SL with Kevin Keene 4th and Tom Harris 5th. Heats to John Tallman and Keene.

Notes: Only 10 cars tonight with 9 starting the feature. 3 cautions slowed the action.

Dusty Swecker won his 5th PS feature of 2008 by leading all 15 laps. After cautions on the first 3 attempts to start the feature, the fourth attempt was single file. Swecker who was on the pole took off and led every lap. Fourth starting Spec Yokum got to 2nd on the 1st lap but trailed by a wide margin the entire distance to finish 2nd with Dave Riggs 3rd , Mack Wimer 4th and Brian Blake from the rear 5th. Heats to Swecker and Yokum.

Notes: 18 cars in the pits with 15 starting the feature. Only 9 running after 15 laps. 4 cautions with 3 before an official lap.

Thomas Simpson won his 2nd 4 Cyl feature of 2008 when he passed leader Zac Williams on lap 10 and led the final 3 laps for the win. Williams from the outside pole looked to have his first ever win when he drifted high in turn 4 on lap 10 and Simpson dove under him and took the lead. The next lap Williams did the same thing again in the same turn and lost 2nd to Dickie Tharp. Williams finished 3rd with polesitter Travis Mullenax 4th and Steve Sisler 5th. Heats to Steve Sisler and Thomas Simpson.

Notes: Only 10 cars with all 10 starting and finishing the feature. Mike Murphy got his #22 Pinto out of mothballs for the rest of the year.

David Bunnell won his first ever Hornet feature at the Elkins Speedway as he passed John Stinnett on lap 2 and led the final 9 laps for the win. Lawrence Wimer passed Stinnett on lap 5 for 2nd. Stinnett held on for 3rd with #11 4th and Walt Foster 5th. Heats to Bunnell and David Wamsley.

Paul Wilmoth Jr wins 5th Budweiser LM Feature of 2008 at the Elkins Speedway

By Bob Reed

Kerens, WV. 6/27/2008. On a night when racing legend Rodney Combs was in attendance driving a replica of his famous JW Hunt sponsored #5 car from the 1980s when he lived in Lost Creek, WV, Paul Wilmoth Jr continued his hot streak with his 5th win at the Elkins Speedway and 12th win of 2008.

Charlie George and Butch McGill on the front row with Paul Wilmoth and Combs in the second row led the 16 car field to the green. Three cautions before an official lap eliminated Skip Hare and Josh Coffman. When the race finally got an official start, McGill led George, Paul Wilmoth, Combs and Shawn Poling. McGill built up a 5 or 6 car length lead while Wilmoth was working George for 2nd. Combs was comfortably in 4th while 9th starting Bob Gordon jumped to 6th on the first lap and then passed Poling for 5th on lap 2 but couldn’t touch Combs.

On lap 5 Paul Wilmoth worked past George and began his chase of the leader. Steve Wilmoth and Bo Feathers also moved up as they closed in on Gordon and began challenging him for 5th. On lap 13 when the caution flew for a slowing Jim McCloud McGill still led Paul Wilmoth, George, Combs, Gordon, Steve Wilmoth, Tim Senic, Feathers and 14th starting Dusty Hamrick.

When the green flew McGill again built his lead to 4 or 5 car lengths over Paul Wilmoth. On lap 17 Senic moved around Steve Wilmoth for 6th and started pressuring Gordon for 5th. On this same lap Wilmoth changed his line coming through turns 3 & 4 from the bottom and middle of the track to the top and immediately closed up on McGill. On lap 18 going through turns 1 & 2 Wilmoth sailed around McGill on the top and came out on the back straight with the lead. He then led the final 8 laps for the win.

On lap 22 Steve Wilmoth got back by Senic for 7th and then on lap 24 passed Gordon for 5th.

At the checkered Paul Wilmoth led McGill by 6 or 8 car lengths with George 3rd, Combs 4th and Steve Wilmoth 5th. Heats to Combs and Paul Wilmoth.

Notes: 17 cars in the pits with 16 starting the feature. 10 cars running after 25 laps. 5 cautions slowed the action. Hard charger was Dusty Hamrick who started 15th and finished 9th, a gain of 6 spots.

Notes: Wilmoth’s #B1 LM is a Rocket chassis powered by a Chevrolet engine built by JR. Sponsors are Midcap Land and Timber, RRAMCO Inc, NAPA Auto & Truck Parts, Braden Drilling LLC, DKM Hauling and Hoosier.

Notes: Joe Loudin went off the track in turn 3 & 4 during hot laps and hit one of the Euclid tires doing considerable damage to the rear of his #5 which ended his night.

Notes: During intermission Rodney Combs signed autographs for the fans on the front straight. He also was available all night for drivers and fans in the pits.

Billy Brown, Clarksburg won his first J&M Grafix SL feature of 2008 by leading all 20 laps. From the outside pole Brown got the jump on polesitter Larry Hoover and held off Hoover for 19 laps.

Hoover challenged Brown several times but he had to contend with Keven Keene for the first 9 laps until Shane Hitt finally worked by Keene for 3rd and then he began challenging Hoover. Hoover looked to have a sure 2nd but on the final lap coming off turn 4 his car quit and he coasted across the line in 7th.

Brown also had problems on the final lap as his car began smoking and it let out a loud noise as he crossed the line for the win. When he came back after being weighed it quit and Brown said that it had blown up. He was pushed to the pits after pictures.

The final order at the checkered after all of this action on the last lap was Brown, Hitt, Keene, John Tallman and Chad Green. Heats to Anthony Arbogast and Brown.

Notes: 11 cars started the feature with only 8 running after 20 laps. 3 cautions. Hard charger was Hitt who started 6th and finished 2nd, a gain of 4 spots. One new car tonight was the #3 of Mike Sturm.

Notes: Brown’s win was also only his 2nd ever as he won one SL feature last year at the Speedway.

In Miller’s Used Cars AMRA Modified Action only 3 cars showed up tonight and only 2 chose to run the feature. Phil Jeffries had engine problems after 4 laps so on the next lap Mike Murphy was given the checkered flag.

Dusty Swecker won his 4th PS feature of the year of 2008. Swecker had clutch problems in his heat and had to start 17th in an 18 car field. On the first lap Swecker had jumped to 10th but on lap 4 was involved in a wreck which eliminated front runners Speck Yokum, Randy Thornhill and Brian Barker. Both Swecker and Randy Bohan were sent to the tail at this point.

From the drop of the green Johnny Singleton led with last week’s winner Ricky Vest 2nd for the first 3 laps and then Brandon Kerr for the next 3. Then on lap 7 Singleton pushed up high in turns 3 & 4 and Kerr took the lead. Kerr held the lead for 3 laps until he slid high in turns 1 & 2 and Singleton and Swecker dropped him to 3rd.

Singleton held the lead only one lap as he again pushed up high in turn 3 & 4 and Swecker drove by for the lead and the win. Singleton held onto 2nd for his best finish ever with Kenny Vest 3rd, Bohan 4th and Jimbo Owens 5th. Heats to Spec Yokum and Teresa Vaughn.

Notes: 17 cars started the feature with 11 running after 15 laps. 6 cautions. Hard charger was Swecker who started 17th and finished 1st, a gain of 16 spots.

Dickie Tharp led every lap of the 4 Cyl feature for his first ever feature win at the Elkins Speedway. Mike Simpson chased him for the first 2 laps until Travis Mullenax took up the chase on lap 3 but he broke on lap 9 and went pitside.

Tommy Simpson passed brother Mike on lap10 for 2nd and a late caution closed up the field but Tommy Simpson could never get close enough to make a challenge for the lead and Tharp went under the checkered with a 4 or 5 car length win over Tommy Simpson with Mike Simpson 3rd, Steve Sisler 4th and Rick Kesler 5th. Heats to Travis Mullenax and Tharp.

Notes: 11 cars started the feature with 8 running after 12 laps. 2 cautions. Hard charger was Thomas Simpson who started 7th and finished 2nd, a gain of 5 spots.

Notes: 1 new car was the #1T of William Riley

In Mini-Wedge action Megan Davis won her 3rd feature in a row and 3rd of the year at the Speedway. This week she was followed across the line by Zak Kimbrew, Garrett Paugh, Scott Perine and Kaylee Yokum. Heats to Davis and Paugh.

Notes: 13 cars tonight. New cars were the #83 of Trey Watson and the #95 of Austin Watson.

Next week racing at the Speedway will be held on Saturday July 5th. For further info check the website @www.elkinsmotorspeedway.com.

Paul Wilmoth Jr wins 4th LM Feature of 2008 at the Elkins Speedway

By Bob Reed

Kerens, WV. 6/13/2008. Paul Wilmoth Jr from his 3rd starting spot took the lead from polesitter Brad Hudson in turn 3 & 4 on lap 1 and led every lap for his 4th Budweiser LM win of 2008 at the Elkins Speedway.

Brad Hudson and Steve Booth led the 17 cars to the green with Paul Wilmoth and Butch McGill right behind them. Wilmoth worked by both Hudson and Booth to lead the first lap. Booth trailed Wilmoth the first lap followed by McGill, Hudson and Steve Wilmoth. In turn 4 of lap 2 Booth spun on his own in front of the field bringing out the only caution of the night. He collected Joe Loudin, Skip Hare and Billy Holbert with everyone else managing to miss the melee. Loudin had sheet metal damage and continued while Hare and Booth were towed off. Holbert only had a left rear flat, went to the pits and returned on the tail.

When the green flew McGill gave Wilmoth a contest for a couple laps and the two did make contact coming off turn 2 on lap 3 with Wilmoth getting sideways but kept going and immediately began increasing his lead. He built up a lead of ˝ track by lap 10 which he maintained through the middle of lap 25.

From the early stages of the race McGill ran 2nd followed by Steve Wilmoth, Bob Gordon and Chuck Harper. But in the latter stages both Gordon and Jake Hawkins came on strong. Gordon, hooked up on the bottom, got by Steve Wilmoth on lap 13 and began chasing McGill. Finally on lap 23 he got McGill for 2nd and closed within about 6 to 8 cars of Paul Wilmoth when Wilmoth had a flat left rear on the last lap coming thru turns 3 & 4. Hawkins who started 13th ,was running 7th on lap 10, moved around Harper on lap 13 and Steve Wilmoth on lap 24 to finish 4th.

Wilmoth did have a scare as he had a flat right rear on the last lap coming through turns 3 & 4. He slowed down and the huge lead of ˝ track was to his advantage. Gordon closed to within 6 to 8 car lengths of Wilmoth as Wilmoth took the checkered at a very slow rate of speed and then limped to the pits on only the wheel. After going across the scales his crew put on a new wheel and tire and he came back out for his interview and pictures.

At the checkered Paul Wilmoth led Gordon, McGill, Hawkins and Steve Wilmoth. Heats to Gordon and McGill.

Notes: Wilmoth told me that his flat was a result of the contact with McGill. He said that he knew the tire was going down earlier.

Notes: 18 cars in the pits with 17 starting the feature. 12 running after 25 laps. Hard charger was Jake Hawkins who started 13th and finished 4th, a gain of 9 spots.

Notes: New cars tonight were the #1 of Trey Martin and the #8 of Greg Elrod. Also Ron Clevenger was out for the first time this year with his #2P.

Notes: During hot laps Dusty Hamrick went off turn 3 backwards and hit the Euclid tires lining the fence line and damaged his #55. It took two wreckers to remove his car from the tires. He was sitting on top of one tire and against another so one wrecker had to lift the car while the other one pulled it away. Dusty was unhurt but his night was over.

From his inside pole starting position Anthony Arbogast led all 20 laps of the J&M Grafix SL feature for his 2nd win of 2008 at the Speedway. All of the action was behind Arbogast as 2nd starting Shane Hitt chased Arbogast for the first 17 laps and challenged him several times. Arbogast was using the high line and Hitt would dive under him in the turns and get his nose in front but Arbogast would pull ahead going down the straight. This happened almost every lap. Then on lap 19 going into turn 1 Kevin Keene who was running better as the laps ran down dove under Hitt and took his line away. When Hitt started to dive under Arbogast as he had been doing he didn’t see Keene and the two made contact with Hitt spinning off the top of the turn. He came back up on the track and made a couple of swipes at Keene and the officials sent him off which ruined his good run for the night.

Arbogast then held off Keene the final laps with Chad Green 3rd, Jamie McCloud 4th and John Tallman 5th. The only heat to McCloud.

Notes: Only 9 cars with 8 starting the feature. 2 cautions slowed the action.

Notes: One new car tonight was the #27 of Trevor Feathers.

Vic Vandergrift did it again as he led every lap for his 5th Miller’s Used Cars AMRA Feature of 2008. Vandergrift from the pole led Jason Defibaugh, Phil Jeffries, Nolan Dalton and Mike Murphy in this order the entire 15 laps. Dave Defibaugh who started outside pole slid off turn 1 on the first lap and went to the pits. Jason Defibaugh won the only heat.

Notes: Only 7 cars with 6 starting the feature. Only 5 ran the entire distance.

Notes: One new car was the #D2 of Nolan Dalton.

Ricky Vest passed leader Dusty Swecker on a lap 9 restart and led the final 6 laps for his first ever PS feature win at the Elkins Speedway. Swecker hung on for 2nd followed by Randy Bohan, Brandon Kerr and Teresa Vaughn. Heats to Swecker and Vaughn.

Notes: After 8 years of trying Vest finally won his first ever feature.

Notes: 15 cars in the pits with 14 starting the feature. 11 running after 15 laps. 4 cautions.

Notes: When Teresa Vaughn won the 2nd heat, it was her first ever heat win.

Travis Mullenax from the outside pole got the jump on pole sitter Tommy Simpson and led all but two laps for his 2nd 4 Cyl feature win of 2008. Simpson led him on laps 4 and 9 but Mullenax was faster on the top than Simpson in the middle of the track and held off Simpson for the win. Dickie Tharp passed Steve Sisler on lap 7 for 3rd and Zak Williams ran 5th all night. The only heat was won by Mullenax.

Notes: 8 cars with all 8 starting the feature. Only 6 finished. Only 1 caution.

Megan Davis out dueled Garret Paugh, Scott Perine, Zak Kimbrew and Kaylee Yokum for her 2nd straight and 2nd Mini-Wedge feature of the year. Heats to Davis and Perine.

Next week at the Elkins Speedway is the 2nd visit of 2008 of the IRS series for LM paying $5000 to the winner. For further info check the Elkins website @ www.Elkinsmotorspeedway.com.

Paul Wilmoth Jr. wins 3rd LM Feature of 2008 at the Elkins Speedway

By Bob Reed

Kerens, WV. 6/6/2008. Paul Wilmoth Jr. Clarksburg passed early leader Bob Gordon on lap 13 and led the final 13 laps for his 3rd win of 2008 at the Elkins Speedway.

Gordon and Shawn Poling led the field to the green with Gordon immediately jumping to a big lead with 3rd starting Paul Wilmoth and Poling fighting for 2nd. On lap 4 Wilmoth finally working under Poling in turns 1 & 2 and finished the pass going down the back straight. He then began chasing Gordon who had almost a full straight lead at this point. Wilmoth over the next 6 laps was unable to close the gap. Then on lap 10 as Gordon was coming up on the rear of the field Mike Lewis and Skip Hare made contact in turn 3 & 4 right in front of Gordon and he had to stop to keep from hitting them.

Gordon was given his spot back and continued to lead the field and opened up another good sized lead over Wilmoth. On lap 13 his good night ended when he went into turn 1 too hard and sailed off the top of the track and brought out caution #2. This gave the lead to Wilmoth who took off at the green and built up his own big lead over Charlie George who was now in 2nd.

Wilmoth had to survive one scare on the last lap as Skip Hare spun in turn 4 and stopped sideways in the middle of the track. Wilmoth slid to a stop to avoid hitting him and was given his spot back. He then led the final lap for the win.

Charlie George got by Poling on lap 12 for 3rd, inherited second when Gordon went to the tail but never challenged Wilmoth for the lead even though he was closing the gap near the finish. Wilmoth led George, Loudin, Steve Wilmoth, who passed Chuck Harper on the last lap for 4th, and Harper at the finish. George and Paul Wilmoth won the heats.

Notes: 16 cars in the pits with 15 starting the feature. 13 were running after 25 laps. Only 3 cautions tonight. Hard charger was Butch McGill who started 11th and finished 6th, a gain of 5 spots.

Notes: Mike Lewis, Mt Lake Park, Md. was out with a new car which he just bought. It is a steel block and he plans on running it in SL but because he didn’t have enough hard tires to run SL he had to run LM tonight.

Notes: Richard Frazier went over the top of the track in turn 3 during hot laps and hit the Euclid tires. He had some damage underneath the car and was towed off. He failed to come out for his heat or the feature.

Notes: Paul Wilmoth Jr. won his 3rd feature of the year at Elkins and 9th total in 2008.

John Tallman passed leader Chad Green on lap 6 and led the final 15 laps for his first J&M Grafix SL win of 2008 at the Elkins Speedway.

After 2 attempts at a start Green from the outside pole got the jump on polesitter Tallman. On the first attempt at a start 5th starting Kris Patterson got sideways in turn 2, causing everyone behind him to take evasive action. Anthony Arbogast got turned around, stopped with sheet metal damage and was the only car relegated to the rear.

When the green flew the next time Green powered around Tallman in turns 1 & 2 on the top and took off down the back straight to lead lap 1 with Tallman 2nd, Brad Harris 3rd, Cody Hardesty 4th and Southern 5th. After 1 complete lap Arbogast brought out the 2nd caution as he stopped in turn 1. On this restart Sonny Conley moved around Southern for 5th.

On lap 6 Tallman got by Green for the lead and the next lap Green began dropping back through the field. He went pitside the next lap. The top 5 was now Tallman, Harris, Hardesty, Conley and 9th starting Shane Hitt. Harris tried Tallman several times over the final 15 laps but never seriously contested for the lead. Hitt spun on his own in turn 4 on lap 7 and went to the tail. He did return for a 5th place finish. Conley went to 4th when Green dropped out on lap 7 and got by Hardesty on lap 11 for 3rd. He then began contesting Harris for 2nd on almost every lap but could never get by him. Robbie Scott who had moved into 5th on lap 7 moved into 4th on lap 14 dropping Hardesty to 5th.

On lap19 the order changed when Conley and Harris made contact. Harris kept going but Conley stopped with Scott and Billy Brown also being collected.

After the restart and at the finish the order was Tallman, Harris, Hardesty, Southern and Hitt. Heats to Southern and Conley.

Notes: 15 cars started the feature with 11 running after 20 laps. 4 cautions. Hard charger was Kevin Keene who started 15th and finished 7th, a gain of 8 spots.

Notes: New cars tonight were the #1 of Bubby Tharp Jr. and the #7 of Dave Gump. Jamie McCloud was driving Tom Harris’s #11 as Tom was off fishing in a tournament.

From the pole Phil Jeffries led all 15 laps of the Miller’s Used Cars AMRA Modified feature for his first win of 2008 at the Speedway.

On the first attempt at a start polesitter Dave Defibaugh looped it in front of the field in turn 1 collecting 4th starting Vic Vandergrift and 6th starting Mike Murphy. This moved Jeffries to the pole and Jason Defibaugh to the outside pole.

On the next start Jeffries took off with Jason Defibaugh in tow followed by Vandergrift, Dave Defibaugh, Cliff Cochran and J.R. Messenger. Messenger dropped out on lap 2 and everyone else ran in this order for 15 laps. Jason Defibaugh was within 2 to 4 car lengths of Jeffries the entire distance but could never mount a serious challenge for the lead.

Notes: Cliff Cochran was out for the first time this year. Mike Murphy brought out his new car. It is the one that he bought from Dave Defibaugh over the winter and he was waiting on a new engine.

Dusty Swecker won his 3rd PS feature of 2008 when he passed leader Spec Yokum in lapped traffic on lap 13. From the drop of the green polesitter Yokum had led the field while 3rd starting Swecker who moved into 2nd on lap 2 had chased him through lapped traffic but Yokum was holding off his every challenge. Finally on lap13 going through turns 1 & 2 Yokum took the bottom around Kenny Vest and Robin Maxson while Swecker took the high side. Yokum got hung up and Swecker took the lead and went on for the win. Yokum finished a close 2nd with Randy Bohan in his best finish of the year 3rd, Brian Barker 4th and Sarah Vaugh 5th. Heats to Swecker and Brandon Kerr.

Notes: 17 cars in the pits with16 starting the feature. Only 10 running after 15 laps. No cautions. Hard charger was Randy Thornhill who started 16th and finished 7th, a gain of 9 spots.

Notes: Yokum told me after the race that he broke a water pump in the latter laps of the race and water was pouring down on his front tire. This caused him not to be able to steer the car real good. He said that this was why he couldn’t get through those lapped cars in the last couple laps of the race.

Notes: When Brandon Kerr won the 2nd heat it was his first ever heat race win.

Notes: Robert Isner was back with his restored car. Several weeks ago it was burned to the ground in a garage fire but he has redone it completely.

Tommy Simpson brought out a new car and just was breaking it in tonight for son Daniel so he did it right. He passed leader Dickie Tharp on lap 7 and led the final 6 laps for his first win in several years at the Speedway. The next lap Tharp went off the back straight and Steve Sisler, Travis Mullenax and Mark Digges dropped him to 5th where he finished. Heats toTravis Mullenax and Kenny Rowback.

Notes: 12 cars started the feature with 10 running after 12 laps. Only 2 cautions. Hard charger was the 38 of Mark Digges who started 11th and finished 4th, a gain of 7 spots.

Notes: One new car this week was the #97 driven to victory by Tommy Simpson.

This week Jason Moore waited until the last lap to make his move to win his 2nd Hornet feature of 2008. Moore passed leader David Bunnell in the 4th turn on lap 10 for the win. David Wamsley was a close 3rd with Rob Singleton 4th and Ivan Wamsley 5th. Heats to Singleton and Moore.

Notes: 10 cars started the feature with all 10 running after 10 laps. Only 2 cautions. Hard charger was David Bunnell who started 9th and finished 2nd, a gain of 7 spots.

Megan Davis won her first Mini Wedge feature of 2008 in a tight 8 lap battle with Zak Kimbrew, Kaylee Yokum and Garrett Paugh. At the checkered Davis led Zak Kimbrew, Yokum, Paugh and Scott Perine. Heats to Zak Kimbrew and Ryan Watson.

Next week is fan appreciation night with the hill only $8.00. Regular racing in all classes. For further information check the website @ www.elkinsmotorspeedway.com

Allen Brannon wins S.M.A.R.T. Series and Billy Holbert wins LM at the Elkins Speedway

By Bob Reed

Kerens WV. 5/30/2008. Allen Brannon, Winchester, VA passed race long leader Greg Roberson on lap 32 and led the final 9 laps to win the Steel Block Mid Atlantic Racing Tour (S.M.A.R.T.) Series opener at the Elkins Speedway.

Roberson and John Tallman led the 23 car field to the green with eventual winner Brannon back in 7th. At the drop of the green Tallman powered around Roberson in turns 1 & 2 and led going down the back straight but a spin by Jimmy Richards stopped his good run requiring a complete restart.

On the next start Tallman again got another real good run on the top thru 1 & 2 and led the first lap with Roberson 2nd, Chad Green 3rd, Freddie Carpenter 4th and Anthony Arbogast 5th. Brannon was 8th. On lap 2 Roberson who was working the middle of the track got by Tallman for the lead. The next lap the 2nd caution flew slowing the field when Don Woodruff looped it. At this point the lineup was Roberson, Tallman, Green, Carpenter, Arbogast, Billy Brown, Brannon, Jared Almarode, Bubby Dillman, Derick Quade, Kris Southern, Tom Harris, Spencer Liggon, Kevin Keene, John Reedy, Brad Harris, Louis Timberlake, C.J. Brown, Ted Kehrer, Joe Clutter, Mitch Miller, Richards, and Woodruff.

When the green flew Roberson immediately opened up a 6 to 8 car length lead over Tallman who had a 2 to 4 car length lead over Green with the rest of the field behind. The only mover in the top ten was Brannon who on lap 7 got by Brown and then the next lap Carpenter for 5th. Then on lap 9 Joe Clutter who was at the tail of the field spun and brought out a caution. On this caution Arbogast went to the pits. This moved Brannon to 4th.

During this green flag period Carpenter who had slipped back to 6th slid off the top of turn 1 & 2 on lap 12 and dropped back to 12th.

This time when the green flew Brannon was all over the tail of Green who was pressuring Tallman with Roberson maintaining his 6 to 8 car length lead. Ninth place Kris Southern stopped in turn 4 on lap 16 bringing out caution #5 and stopping this battle for 2nd.

On the restart Brannon again motored off while Green dove under Tallman going into 1 with Brannon on Tallman’s rear bumper. These three raced this close until lap 20 when Brannon passed both Green and Tallman in turn’s 1 & 2 and took over 2nd. He immediately began closing the gap to Roberson. He got up behind Roberson and dove under him in turn 1 & 2 and looked to have him passed when a caution flew on lap 22.

At this point Roberson led Brannon, Tallman, Green, Almarode, Quade, Dillman, Carpenter, Brad Harris and Reedy.

Roberson took off at this green but had Brannon glued to his rear bumper with Tallman and Green now battling for 3rd and 4th with Quade nipping at their heels. On lap 31 a wisp of smoke appeared to come from the rear of Roberson’s car going down the front straight. Then coming through turns 3 & 4 on lap 32 Roberson slowed with a flat right rear. He stopped on the front straight and went pitside, returned but was 1 lap down.

Brannon now led Tallman, Quade, Green, Carpenter, Almarode, Reedy, Liggon, Timberlake and Keene.

The race ran caution free for the last 9 laps. During this period Quade got by Tallman for 2nd on the last lap while Carpenter got by Green for 4th on lap 35. The big loser in the final laps looked to be Bubby Dillman as he was running in the top 10 with 12 laps to go and ended up a lap down in 16th spot at the finish.

At the checkered Brannon led Quade, Tallman, Carpenter, Green, Almarode, Timberlake, Reedy, Liggon and Keene. Heats to Roberson, Tallman, Carpenter and Green.

Notes: 23 cars from 4 states (MD, NC, VA, WV) in the pits with all 23 starting the feature. 15 cars running after 40 laps. 10 cautions slowed the action. Hard charger was Ted Kehrer who started 23rd and finished 11th, a gain of 12 spots.

From his outside front row starting spot Billy Holbert, Fairmont led all 25 laps of the Budweiser LM Feature for his first win of 2008 at the Elkins Speedway. Butch McGill from his 4th starting position followed Holbert on the first lap and immediately began challenging for the lead. When Steve Booth spun in turn 4 on lap 2 Holbert’s lead was tenuous at best. At this point Holbert led McGill, Rod Gibson, Jamie McCloud, Chuck Harper, Joe Loudin, Tim Senic, Bob Gordon, Charlie George, Steve Booth, Skip Hare, Shawn Poling and Josh Coffman.

When the green flew Holbert began increasing his lead and soon had a 6 or 8 car length lead and was increasing it every lap. McGill ran a strong second through lap 15 when 8th starting Gordon got by and began chasing Holbert. Fifth starting Harper then passed McGill for 3rd on lap 19 and 10th starting George passed him on lap 23. On lap 24 Gordon almost lost in coming through turn 4 and dropped from 2nd to 4th as both Harper and George got by him.

At the checkered Holbert led by almost a straight over Harper, George, Gordon and Senic. Heats to McCloud and Loudin.

Notes: Holbert said after the race: “I was watching the new scoreboard and could see that Butch (McGill) was back there. I could also see him a couple of times. Then when I saw that he was no longer in second I wandered what happened.” “The track was smooth all night and made it very nice.” “For some reason I was more relaxed tonight being out front than other nights being in the back.”

Notes: From what Holbert said this new scoreboard is useful to the drivers.

Notes: 14 cars in the pits with 13 starting the feature. 12 cars running after 25 laps. Only two cautions. Hard charger was Charlie George who started 10th and finished 3rd, a gain of 7 positions. One new car was the 16 of Rod Gibson.

Notes: Holbert’s #7 is a Rocket chassis, powered by an engine built by Frankie Rose and is sponsored by Ace Metal Works and MountainTech.

Notes: Jamie McCloud driving his dad’s #5M started 3rd and held his own for the first time ever in a LM. He finished a strong 9th.

Notes: In hot laps John Parsons went off turn 3 backwards at full speed and hit the Euclid tires at the edge of the property. Parson’s #57 had extensive damage to the right side as he hit 2 tires. One hit the right front tire and damaged the right front suspension and the right header. The other hit the right rear quarter and did extensive body damage with some possible frame damage. This was a big blow to a low budget racer.

Jason Defibaugh led all 15 laps of the Miller’s Used Cars AMRA Modified Feature for his first win of 2008 at the Elkins Speedway. Vic Vandergrift who had won the previous 4 weeks chased him the entire distance. On lap 10 Vandergrift got under Defibaugh in turn 4 with the 2 making hard contact. Defibaugh wiggled and was going to lose the lead. Vandergrift slowed and allowed Defibaugh to regain his momentum. Vandergrift never got close again and Defibaugh took the win followed by Vandergrift, Phil Jeffries, Louie Krushanky, Tom Sigler, Robin Ours and Mike Murphy.

Notes: Only 7 cars in the pits with all starting and finishing the feature. No heats because of the 10 car rule.

Spec Yokum won his 3rd PS feature of 2008 when he passed Randy Bohan on lap 12 and led the final 3 laps for the win.

At the drop of the green last weeks winner Dusty Swecker from the pole took the lead but coming through turn 4 spun in from of the field. Luckily no one hit him but outside polesitter Dusten Isner wasn’t as lucky as he ended up with damage and was towed off.

On the restart Brian Blake who purchased an engine from Yokum last week led. Blake led until he almost lost it in turn 2 and was passed by Johnny Singleton, Bohan and Yokum. Singleton led for 2 laps until Bohan got by. Bohan then looked like the winner but he had problems and Yokum passed him for the lead on lap 12. Bohan immediately went pitside.

At the finish Yokum had a 10 car length lead over Singleton who was followed by Blake, Randy Thornhill, who had gone to the tail on lap 7, and Sarah Vaughn. Heats to Kyle Thomas and Swecker.

Notes: 20 cars in the pits. 19 started the feature with only 10 running after 15 laps. Only 4 cautions. Hard charger was Justin Chipps who started 19th and finished finished 7th, a gain of 12 spots.

Notes: New cars were the 97 of Kyle Thomas and the 17F of Justin Chipps.

Mark Digges, Winchester, VA made his first ever trip to the Elkins Speedway productive as he won the 4 Cyl Feature. Digges who leads the Winchester Speedway 4 Cyl points took the lead from Joe Mullenax on lap 4 and led the final 9 laps for the win. His #38 had to be pushed to winners circle as the transmission shifter was broken and the car was locked in gear. Also the header was broken and the car was making funny noises all night.

Last week’s winner Travis Mullenax started 9th and on lap 8 worked to 2nd but could never challenge Digges for the lead. He finished 2nd over Dickie Tharp with Joe Mullenax 4th and Steve Sisler 5th. Heats to Terry Styler and Zac Williams.

Notes: 14 cars in the pits. All 14 started the feature with 11 running after 12 laps. Only 2 cautions. Hard Charger was Steve Sisler who started 13th and finished 5th, a gain of 8 spots.

Notes: New cars tonight were the 38 of Digges, the 17L of Randy Linaberg, the 15M of Butch Mayo, the 423 of Terry Styler and the 33 of Justin Styler.

Garrett Paugh won his 2nd Mini Wedge feature of 2008 when he led every lap to best Zak Kimbrew, Megan Davis, Scott Perine and James Nelson. Heats to Perine and Zak Kimbrew.

Notes: 10 minis tonight.

Chuck Harper wins first of year at the Elkins Speedway

By Bob Reed

Kerens WV. 5/23/2008. From his outside pole starting position Chuck Harper, Beverly, driving the J-Rods Vending, Sturms Motorsports Custom powered Rayburn LM led all 25 laps to win his first feature of 2008 at the Elkins Speedway.

Harper told me after the race: “I’m glad this race wasn’t any longer. Look at my left rear tire.” I did and it was going flat.

At the drop of the green outside polesitter Harper took the lead from polesitter Brad Hudson with 3rd starting Paul Wilmoth Jr following him in 2nd with 5th starting Joe Loudin 3rd, 4th starting Tim Senic 4th, 7th starting Shawn Poling 5th, Hudson 6th, 6th starting Steve Wilmoth 7th, 9th starting Billy Holbert 8th , 10th starting Richard Frazier 9th and 11th starting Bob Gordon 10th.

With Harper on the top and Wilmoth running the middle these two put on quite a show for the entire 25 laps as Wilmoth was under Harper on both ends of the track on almost every lap and the two raced side by side for several laps down both the back and front straights. At the finish Wilmoth was at the rear quarter of Harper as he took the checkered for his first win of 2008 at the Elkins Speedway.

Back in the pack Tim Senic ran a strong 3rd and ran mostly unchallenged. Joe Loudin ran 4th for the first16 laps until Steve Wilmoth got by. Then on lap 18 Billy Holbert got by and the next lap Bob Gordon did the same dropping him to 7th where he finished. 14th starting Butch McGill moved into the top 10 on the first lap and on lap 7 had moved to 8th where he finished. Dusty Hamrick started 16th and finally got into the top 10 on lap 24 where he finished. The big loser of the night was Hudson who started on the pole and dropped back quickly at the start, went pitside once and finished 15th.

At the checkered Harper led Paul Wilmoth Jr, Senic, Steve Wilmoth, Holbert, Gordon, Loudin, McGill, Frazier and Hamrick. Heats to Senic and Shawn Poling.

Notes: 18 cars in the pits with 17 starting the feature. 14 were running after 25 laps. Only 6 cautions slowed the action. Hard charger was McGill who started 14th and finished 8th, a gain of 6 spots.

Notes: Richard Frazier and John Parsons were out for the first time this year.

Anthony Arbogast won his first ever J&M Grafix SL feature at the Elkins Speedway when he passed Randy Gordon on lap 3 and led the final 13 laps. Arbogast held off opening night winner Kevin Keene who chased him the final 8 laps after he got by Tom Harris on lap 8. Harris ran 3rd until a lap 14 restart and he ended up a disappointing 7th. Robbie Scott driving one of Sonnie Conley’s cars then got to 3rd but could never get close enough to Arbogast or Keene to threaten for the lead.

At the finish Arbogast led Keene, Scott, Shane Hitt and Cody Hardesty. Heats to Keene and Arbogast.

Notes: 16 cars in the pits with 15 starting the feature. Only 8 running after 15 laps.5 cautions slowed the action. Hard Charger was Robbie Scott who started 15th and finished 3rd, a gain of 12 spots. Joe Clutter, Mike O’Brien and Robbie Scott were out for the first time this year.

Notes: Arbogast moved up from PS last year. He has only driven a SL 4 times this year and has been improving every time out.

Vic Vandergrift remained undefeated at the Elkins speedway. This week he led all 30 laps of the AMRA Modified Road Warrior Tour event for his 4th straight win at the track. At the finish the first 5 spots were all locals as Vandergrift led Dave Defibaugh, Jason Defibaugh, Louie Krushansky and Tom Sigler.

At the start polesitter Vandergrift jumped into the lead over Mark Dickson, Dave Defibaugh, Phil Jeffries, Robin Dustin, Jason Defibaugh, Krushansky, Sigler, Kenny Johnson and Donnie Nething. On the 2nd lap Krushansky, Sea Boggess and Mike Murphy tangled in turn 2 bringing out caution #1. Boggess stopped in turn 3 on lap 4 bring out the 2nd caution with damage which was apparently caused from this incident.

After this incident which sent Krushansky to the tail he was the show. While Vandergrift, Dickson, the two Defibaughs and Sigler were racing up front Krushansky was charging. Jeffries had dropped out on lap 8. Krushansky was running the bottom because everyone else was on the top and the track was open on the bottom. Every lap or so he passed a car and on lap 13 caught and passed Sigler for 5th. He did get by Jason Defibaugh once but Jason did get him back later. On lap 28 while fighting for position the last change in the lineup was made when Dave Defibaugh was under Dickson in turn 1 and the two made slight contact with Dixon going off the top of the turn bringing out the 8th and final caution of the night. This sent Dickson to the tail and ruined his good night.

At the finish Vandergrift led Dave Defibaugh, Jason Defibaugh, Krushansky and Sigler. Heats to Vandergrift, Dave Defibaugh and Dickson.

Notes: Only 17 cars in the pits with all 17 starting the feature. Only 11 running after 30 laps. 9 cautions. Hard Charger was Donnie Nething who started 11th and finished 6th, a gain of 5 spots. Krushansky went to 13th on lap 2 and came to 4th at the finish,, a gain of 9 spots.

Notes: Vandergrift has led every lap of every feature at the Elkins Speedway so far in 2008. He is on a roll and the competition has been some of the best.

Dusty Swecker won his 2nd PS Feature in a row and 2nd of the year as he led all 15 laps for the win. 2 time winner Spec Yokum was a distant 2nd with Brian Blake 3rd, Johnny Singleton 4th and Teresa Vaughn 5th. Heats to Kenny Vest and Swecker.

Notes: 18 cars in the pits with15 starting the feature. 12 running after 15 laps. 5 cautions. Brian Blake was the hard charger as he advanced 11 spots from 14th to a 3rd place finish.

Notes: New cars were Mike Frazier, Randy Thornhill and Mack Wimer.

Travis Mullenax won his first 4 Cyl feature ever at the Elkins Speedway. Dickie Tharp from the outside pole led the first 5 laps but on lap 6 3rd starting Travis Mullenax caught and passed him. Mullenax then held off Tharp over the final 7 laps for his first ever win. Tharp held on for 2nd with Rick Kesler 3rd, Steve Sisler 4th and Joe Mullenax 5th. Heats to Travis Mullenax and Tharp.

Only 11 cars with all 1l starting the feature. 10 were running after 12 laps. Only 2 cautions. New cars were Daniel and Tommy Simpson.

Jason Moore ran off and hid for the feature win in the new Hornet class for front wheel drive cars. Moore won by over a half track with the rest of the field fighting for second. Brothers David and Donnie Wamsley were 2nd and 3rd with Billy Martin 4th and Lawrence Wimer 5th. Heats to John Sinnett and David Wamsley.

Notes: 11 cars in the pits with 10 starting the feature. All 10 were running after 12 laps. No cautions.

No results from the Mini-wedges but I was watching and #24 Scott Perine won the feature.

Kerens, WV. 4/18/2008. On opening night at the Elkins Speedway Paul Wilmoth Jr, Clarksburg, passed leader Butch McGill on a lap 21 restart and led the final 9 laps to win the “Spring Fling 30” and its $1500 prize.

After the redraw Joe Loudin who had finished 2nd in the 2nd heat and Dusty Hamrick who finished 3rd in the 1st head started on the front row while Wilmoth who finished 2nd behind McGill in the 1st heat started 8th and McGill started 3rd.

At the drop of the green Loudin, Hamrick and McGill led the field while Wilmoth was in 7th. The first 3 remained this way with Wilmoth picking off a car a lap. On a lap 6 restart for a tangle between Birch Hare and Tim Senic in turn 2 Wilmoth moved around Billy Holbert for 4th. He immediately began closing the gap to McGill and working to get around him.

Loudin and Hamrick at this point held a 4 or 5 car length lead over McGill and Wilmoth with Holbert, Shawn Poling and Charlie George another 4 or 5 car lengths back leading the rest of the field. They remained this way until lap13 when Loudin broke an axle going though turn 1 and spun. Hamrick in trying to avoid him went off the top and apparently broke a radiator as steam flew out of the #55. Loudin’s #5 caught on fire and brought out a red flag and the fire department.

McGill was now the leader followed by Paul Wilmoth, Holbert, Poling, George and Steve Wilmoth. When the green flew Wilmoth began working McGill hard. Every lap he got under McGill. One lap he dove under him going into turn one and the next lap he did the same in turn 3 but could never make the pass as McGill held his line and never made a slip. Finally on lap 21 brother Steve Wilmoth brought out the final caution of the night as he spun off the top of turn 3 & 4 while battling George and Poling for position.
This was what Paul Wilmoth needed. When the green flew he laid back and got a run going down the front straight and dove under McGill, slid up in front of him in turn 2 for the lead and the race was over. He sped off to a 5 or 6 car length lead which he maintained over the final 9 laps for the win. McGill was a solid 2nd followed by Holbert, George and Poling. McGill and George won the heats.

Notes: 15 cars in the pits. All 15 started the feature with 10 running after 30 laps. 5 cautions slowed the action. Wilmoth was the Hard Charger as he started 8th and won. So much for not being able to pass at Elkins!!!!!!!!! One new car was Josh Coffman while Brad Harris and Billy Brown moved up from SL.

Notes: Paul Wilmoth had some week. Tuesday night he went to the WoO Show at Lernerville and got wrecked in hotlaps. The car needed a rear clip. Wednesday he completely disassembled the rear of the car and cut off the rear clip. Thursday he took it to the Rocket Shop and they welded on a new rear clip. Thursday evening his crew reinstalled all the rear suspension, rearend, gas tank and all the body work. Just to come to Elkins. The way the car ran it didn’t look like it had ever been damaged. This was Wilmoth’s 2nd win in two outings this year as he won the Tyler County opener two weeks ago.

In J&M Grafix SL action Chad Green drew the pole position on the redraw and took off at the drop of the green flag. Green looked like a sure winner for 3 laps but on lap 4 going through turn 1 & 2 he looped the car and ended his good run.
At this point outside polesitter Kevin Keene, Belington assumed the lead and held off Chad Hardesty over the final 16 laps for the win. At the finish Keene led Hardesty, Sonny Conley, Jeff Maxwell and Shane Hitt. Heats to Keene and Maxwell.

Notes: 12 cars in the pits with 10 starting the feature. Only 6 finished. Hard charger was Conley who started 9th and finished 3rd, a gain of 6 spots. New cars tonight were the 2 of Shane Hitt, the 8A of Anthony Arbogast (from PS), the 77 of Larry Hoover (from 4 Cyl) and the 18 of T.J. Salango.

Vic Vandergrift, Fairmont won the Miller’s Used Cars AMRA Modified Feature on the first lap as he got a good start from his 6th starting spot and led every lap for his first win in 6 years at Elkins. 4th starting Dave Defibaugh got trapped behind a car on the start and all he could do was chase Vandergrift for 15 laps. With only one caution on lap 1 these two never slowed and were the class of the field as only Tom Sigler and Mike Murphy were on the same lap at the checkered. Heats to Vandergrift and Dave Defibaugh.

Notes: 12 cars in the pits with 9 starting the feature. Hard charger was Vandergrift who started 6th and won. He passed 5 all on the first lap. One new car was the 10 of Robin Ours. Rod Lanham changed his number from 13 to 7.

Notes: Louie Krushansky had a new car. In his heat he got in a tangle and the right rear quarter panel was damaged. In the feature he only ran 1 lap and retired with mechanical problems. Not a very good debut.

Spec Yocum led all 15 laps of the PS feature for the win. Dusty Swecker was the show. He was attempting to make a pass for the lead on lap 3 when he spun and went to the tail. He then spent the next 7 laps getting back to second. By this time Yocum had almost a straight lead and Swecker began closing it in chunks. He got up to Yocum on the final couple of laps but could never get close to make a pass as he either ran into lapped cars on slipped up. At the checkered Yocum led Swecker, John Maxwell, Johnny Singleton and Kenny Vest. Heats to Yocum and Randy Bohan.

Notes: 18 cars in the pits with 14 starting the feature. Only 8 running after 15 laps. One new car, the 26 of Brian Blake. Samantha Rogers has changed her number from 12R to 9R.

From his 3rd starting spot Kenny Rowback won the 4 Cyl Feature by leading all 12 laps. For the first 6 laps Steve Sisler and Rick Kesner chased him until they tangled in turn 2 which sent Kesner pitside. This put Joe Mullenax on his tail but Mullenax had nothing for Rowback as he held on for the win over Mullenax, newcomer Dickie Tharp, Zac Williams and Steve Sisler.

Notes: Only 10 cars in the pits with 9 starting the feature. Only 6 finished. New cars: the 3 of Dickie Tharp and the 5 of Daniel Connors. Steve Sisler is now in the 7 while Alan Sisler is in the 6.

Zac Kimbrew led every lap of the Mini Wedge feature to win over newcomer Scott Perine, last years points champion Garret Paugh, Ryan Watson and James Nelson. Heats to Megan Davis and Zak Kimbrew.

Next week at the Elkins Speedway is regular racing in all classes. For further information check our website @ www.elkinsmotorspeedway.com.
