THE NEW BEDFORD SPEEDWAY

By Dave Harclerode

BEDFORD, PA -  The Bedford Speedway is undergoing a major improvement this fall.  Six hundred loads of red clay, sifted down to half an inch, will be placed on the track in the coming weeks.  This total resurfacing will be the first in several decades, and the very first time sifted clay was used.  The clay was obtained by the Bedford Fair Association, who applied and recieved a grant from the United States government.  Branden Diehl, of Earth Wise Consulting, wrote the grant application, and the New Enterprise Stone and Lime Co. was contracted to sift and haul the clay.  The project will be completed in two to three weeks.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

STUHLER STELLAR IN BEDFORD LABOR DAY 55

By Dave Harclerode

BEDFORD, PA - Bedford Speedway's annual Labor Day 55 has been a long standing race that highlights each season. The track was in tip top shape, and hopefully the Miller Auto Parts Super Late Model fifty-five lap feature was a sneak peak of what's to come at the World of Outlaw Late Model show coming on September 21st. Gary Stuhler started on the pole, lost the lead on the first lap, and worked hard for fifty laps to regain the lead and win the Super Late Model event. Gary took home $,5,055 for his effort. Shawn Claar put his Ford in victory lane for the third time this season in the Bedford Valley Petroleum Limited Late Model division, and Daniel Cornman won the TC Race Cars Street Stock season finale. Derrick Hinish was the winner in a controversial Ritchey Sandblasting Hobby Stock feature event.

When Gary Stuhler starts any race on the pole, it's usually a done deal. Especially at Bedford, where he sits second on the all-time Super Late Model win list with 27 wins. However, Stuhler fell to the runner up spot on the very first lap when Scott Rhodes took command, and appeared to have the race in hand. Rhodes led the first half of the race convincingly, as the field shuffled themselves behind second place runner Stuhler. Bo Feathers, a dominating force at Bedford this season, started 11th and was flying to the front, making it all the way to third by the half way point fuel stop. DJ Troutman, one of only five non-finishers, dropped out early in the event while running in the top five. Jack Pencil, Jeremy Miller, and Wayne Johnson were mired mid-pack, but it was all about to change after the fuel stop. When racing resumed with 28 laps remaining, Feathers charge to the front diminished, as weekly hotshoe Jeff Rine took over the third spot. Chris Harr worked by Feathers, and almost immediately Feathers backslide had him out of the top five. With 22 laps to go, Stuhler turned on the heat and started pressuring Rhodes. The pair ran side by side, or nearly side by side almost identically lap after lap, like a choreographed dance. As the duo up front tried to figure things out, the Miller, Pencil, and Johnson gang was on a stampede. Pencil led the charge, and advanced ten positions to settle into a solid fifth, as Miller followed in sixth, and Johnson, who started 18th battled in seventh. The front four consisting of Rhodes, Stuhler, Rine, and Harr were fast, and the Pencil led charge would go no further. Back at the front, the Rhodes and Stuhler show was running out of laps. With Rhodes on the outside, and Stuhler working the bottom and middle, the cushion in turns one and two started to go away, much to Rhodes' disliking. On the 50th lap, with 5 laps remaining, Rhodes slid up ever so slightly in turn two, and that's all Gary Stuhler needed to pull into the lead. Stuhler held on to take his first win of the season. Rhodes' great run turned even more sour as Jeff Rine stole the second position from him coming off of turn four on the final lap. Chris Harr finished a solid fourth, and was followed by Jack Pencil. Jeremy Miller came home in sixth, followed by Hard Charger Wayne Johnson, Bo Feathers, DJ Myers, and Nick Dickson. Dickson, Myers, and Jeff Miller won the qualifying events. Jack Pencil edged out Wayne Johnson to take his fourth career Bedford Super Late Model Track Championship. Jack also owns 2 Semi-Late Championships at the speedway.

Shawn Claar was victorious in the Bedford Valley Petroleum Limited Late Models. Travis Calhoun battled hard with hopes of winning his first ever Limited Late Model race at Bedford, but Claar was smooth and fast, and held the top position the entire race. Derek Byler was solid all night in the third position, and Mike Shoemaker appeared to have fourth locked up until Randy Burkholder staged a late race charge. Starting ninth, with a cast on his arm from an injury received a few weeks earlier at another area track, Burkholder took fourth from Shoemaker in the waning laps, and nearly stole third from byler at the finish line. Byler was scored third, inches ahead of Burkholder. Shoemaker held on to fifth, and the rest of the top ten went to Mike Duck, Brian Lowery, Tim Smith, Jr., and Howie Bussard. Tyler Hershey and Brian Lowery won the heats. Tim Smith, Jr. earned his second career Bedford Limited Late Model Track Championship.

Daniel Cornman came to win in the TC Race Cars Street Stocks. Starting fifth, Cornman found himself in the lead within a few laps. The majority of the field was showing some sort of damage from a massive pile up in the lone heat race for the division. Cornman earned his 14th career victory at the speedway, and was followed by Bob Jay, Dave Brown, Donald Wyles, and Brian Duffy. Cornman also won the heat race. Bob Jay earned his third Bedford Street Stock Championship. He also owns one Hobby Stock Championship.

The Ritchey Sandblasting Hobby Stock feature capped the evening, and Reed Stickel appeared to be heading to victory. Derrick Hinish was in tow, and Chuck Weyant followed the front pair closely. Running bumper to bumper, the leaders encountered lap traffic in turn three. As Stickel started to work on disposing of a lapped car, there was contact between himself and Hinish. The end result was Stickel spinning and bringing out the yellow. Hinish took command on the restart, and held off Chuck Weyant for the win. Shawn Wyles finished third, Bill Replogle fourth, and Brandon LaSalle fifth. Mandy Jay finished sixth, Stickel rebounded to take seventh, and Ryan Beckett, Jason Gilliland, and Mike Siegele completed the top ten. Weyant and Stickel won the heat events. Chuck Weyant earned his second career Bedford Hobby Stock Track Championship.

The final race of the season will be a record maker. The World of Outlaw Late Models will be on hand Friday, September 21st, racing for the largest purse in Bedford's history. The $10,000 to win show will host some of the best drivers in the country. Camping is free, and there's a $20 utility hook up fee. Call the speedway office at 814-623-0826, or keep an eye on the website for more information in the coming weeks. www.bedfordspeedway.com

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

HAUS, FRIES, WEYANT, AND MORGAN CAPTURE BEDFORD VICTORIES

By Dave Harclerode

BEDFORD, PA - The Bedford Speedway continued it's season long streak of great racing Friday night, and the racing surface was in great condition. Scott Haus won the Miller Auto Parts Super Late Model feature, and Andy Fries won his first ever Bedford Valley Petroleum Limited Late Model feature in a very exciting race. Chuck Weyant inched a few steps closer to the championship by winning the Ritchey Sandblasting Hobby Stock feature, and Ralph Morgan, Jr. won the RWD 4 cylinder special. Tammy Smith, wife of Limited Late Model star Tim Smith, won the powder puff. A brief intermission was planned to induct several great people into the Bedford Speedway Legends Hall of fame, including active Super Late Model driver Larry Wright.

Scott Haus sits atop the all-time Super Late Model feature win list at Bedford, and Friday's win was number 34. Scott Haus also holds another record at Bedford, with the most consecutive winning seasons. That streak appeared to be in jeopardy this year. Haus has won atleast one feature event every year since 1995, and he was running out of time in '07 to keep that alive. The streak stays alive at 13 seasons however, as Haus won easily over a great field of cars. There was some grueling battles behind Haus' # 33, as Jeff Rine, Scott Rhodes, Wayne Johnson, and Jack Pencil dueled without mercy. Each driver in that pack had a shot at the championship, but in the end, several will now be out of contention. Rine suffered a late race flat while running in the top five. Although Rhodes ran a great race finishing third, point leader Pencil and Wayne Johnson scored enough points to eliminate him from the chase. The feature rundown was Haus, DJ Troutman, Rhodes, Johnson, and Pencil in the top five. They were followed by newcomer Ronnie DeHaven, Shane Beegle (from 13th), Andy Martz, and Larry Wright. Pencil and Rhodes won the heats. Jack Pencil leads Wayne Johnson by 110 points, with only one point race left coming this Friday.

Andy Fries has a long, storied history at Bedford. A long time crowd favorite in the Super Late Model division, Andy found out he has a huge fan base at Bedford when he made his return in a Limited Late Model a few weeks ago. Pole setter Donnie Farlling grabbed the early lead, and Fries, who started fifth, immediately put on his drive to the front. As Fries and Mike Shoemaker battled for the second position, contact was made in turn two, sending Shoemaker in a ring. Purely a racing incident, the racing resumed after the yellow with Fries now in second, and Shoemaker at the tail. Farlling and Fries battled side by side for many laps. Farlling drove the highside with precision, and always seemed to keep a nose ahead of Fries. However, with just 3 laps to go, Farlling pounded the cushion in turn 4, resulting in a flat tire. The race that had fans on their feet had ended, but there was still excitement in the pack. Shoemaker, who went to the tail on lap nine, went unnoticed by many as he worked his way back to third. Fries held on for the final three laps as Shoemaker and Shawn Claar battled it out for second. Claar won that battle, and was followed by Shoemaker, Travis Stickley, and Jerry Bard. Donnie Farlling, who went to the tail with three to go, worked his way back to sixth in only three laps, and was followed by Brian Lowery, Travis Calhoun, Andy Teno, and Derek Byler. Farlling and Shoemaker won the heats. Point leader Tim Smith, Jr. had a rough night. A stuck throttle sent him spinning into turns one and two on lap nine, and heavy contact was made with Craig Perigo. Both driver's went pitside for the night, but luckily for Smith, he earned enough points to seal the 2007 Limited Late Model Points Championship.

The Hobby Stocks put on a great show, as usual. Chuck Weyant came from his sixth starting spot to secure the lead, and was hounded lap after lap by Derrick Hinish. Things got scary for the front pack on the last lap. The yellow flag came out when Mark Shope's #53 erupted like a monsoon, dumping water all through the racing groove in turns three and four. The lead pack was just coming up on the 53 when the caution came out, and the ice skating started almost immediately. Weyant and Hinish made heavy contact, and Joe Railey went completely around in a circle. Luckily, nobody received race ending damage, and on the restart, Weyant held on for the win. He was followed by Hinish, Bill Replogle, Reed Stickel, and Jason Gilliland. Brandon Lasalle finished sixth, and Joe Railey, Mandy Jay, Charlie Walter, and Ray Shepherd completed the top ten. Weyant remains the point leader, 85 points ahead of Reed Stickel with only one point race remaining. A driver can earn a maximum of 150 points each night, so this one will go to the wire.

The rear wheel drive four cylinders were on hand for a surprise visit. Added late to the schedule, the four cylinders delivered a great show. Ralph Morgan, Jr. and Kyle Wiser ran side by side for much of the race, as the pack ran two and sometimes three abreast. Morgan took his first ever Bedford victory ahead of Larry Duvall, Wiser, Mark Digges, and Dave Leidy, Jr. Sixth through tenth went to Dave Leidy, Sr., Ronnie Garlock, Randy Wible, Brian Miller, and Sonny Williamson. Duvall and Morgan won the heats.

This Friday at the Speedway is the famed Labor Day 55. The final points show for all four divisions, the Super Lates will be running 55 laps for $5,055 to win. The Limited Lates, Street Stocks, and Hobby Stocks will all be on hand for one of the best races each season. The raindate will be September 3rd. Also, mark your calendars for Friday, September 21st. The World of Outlaws Late Models will make their first ever visit to the big Bedford Speedway oval. The Limited Late Models will also be on hand, racing for $1,000. The timing is perfect for the $10,000 to win show, and the speedway recommends making hotel arrangements now because fall is a busy season for Bedford County. Camping will also be available. Call the Speedway office at 814-623-0826 for more details.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

EVERHART AND TROUTMAN SPLIT BEDFORD TWIN 20'S

By Dave Harclerode

BEDFORD, PA -  Six feature races highlighted the evening at the Bedford Speedway Friday.  The Miller Auto Parts Super Late Models ran twin 20 lap features, with Steve Everhart taking the first race, and Dave Troutman the second.  The Bedford Valley Petroleum Limited Late Models ran twin 15 lap features.  Mike Shoemaker won the first event, and Tim Smith, Jr. took the second.  The TC Race Cars Street Stocks saw Bob Jay pocket four hundred dollars for his win, and Reed Stickel, Jr. won the Hobby stock feature.  Uncharacteristic of Bedford, the evening was full of accidents.

The First Super Late Model 20 lap feature started off on the wrong foot, with 6 cars crashing in turn two.  On the restart, Steve Everhart took command and won over Jeff Rine, Scott Haus, Jack Pencil, and Scott Rhodes.  Everhart pulled the # 10 pill for invert, which put racing legend Larry Wright on the pole for the second 20 lap feature.  Again, the first lap saw carnage as nearly the entire field piled up coming out of turn four to complete lap one.  Several top competitors were eliminated.  When the racing resumed, Dave Troutman took the top spot from Larry Wright, but tenth starting Everhart was on the move, with Pencil and 18th starting Chris Harr in tow.  The trio got past Wright, and Everhart took a few laps to run down leader Troutman.  The pair battled for several laps, with Everhart looking to earn a $500 bonus to win both 20 lappers.  On the last lap, Everhart gave his final bid, but his move in turn proved to be costly.  Troutman remained the leader, and Chris Harr was able to slip by Everhart for second.  Harr made an attempt to take the win coming to the checkered, but Troutman held on for his second win of the season.  Following Troutman and Harr was Everhart, Jack Pencil, and Scott Rhodes.  Larry Wright was sixth, and Matt Parks, Brian Booze, Wayne Johnson, and Andy Martz completed the top ten.  Heat winners for the evening were Pencil, Rhodes, and Harr.

The first 15 lap Limited Late Model feature was won by Mike Shoemaker.  Shoemaker started fourth, took the lead, and fended off advances from DJ Troutman to win his second feature of the season.  Andy Fries came from 10th to finish 3rd, and Donnie Farlling and Tyler Hershey completed the top ten.  Ten cars were inverted for the second feature, which put Tim Smith, Jr. on the pole.  Smith took command, and Andy Fries again charged from midpack.  This time from eighth, Fries caught second place running Rick Singleton, and the battle was on.  Unfortunately for both drivers, the battled ended with Fries' car resting on top of Singleton's car in turn three.  Singleton retired from the race, but Fries remarkably was able to continue after changing a tire.  Fries ultimately did retire from the race though, as a collision in turn three with Nathan LaSalle ended both driver's night.  Brian Lowery assumed the second spot after the Singleton/Fries incident, and held on, following Smith to the checkered.  John Hedge was third, Tyler Hershey fourth, and Donnie Farlling fifth.  Sixth through tenth went to DJ Troutman, Travis Calhoun, Craig Perigo, George Beckett, and Mike Shoemaker.  Heat winners were Hedge, Troutman, and Perigo.  A scary accident in the first heat involving Shawn Claar caused a very long red flag period.  Claar managed to walk away after his car hit the outside backstretch wall head on at full throttle.  The car appeared to be destroyed.

Bob Jay earned his seventh Street Stock win of the season the hard way, from the back.  Jay and Rick Cragan crashed on the first lap, sending Cragan pitside, and Jay to the tail.  Within a few laps, the dominating Jay was in the lead, and eventually taking the checkered.  Brandon Hoover, Tim Wyles, Donald Wyles, and Jason Douglas completed the top five.  Jay was the lone heat race winner.  With only one race remaining for the Street Stocks, Bob Jay only needs one more win to tie Kevin Weyandt, who is the division's all-time feature winner at the speedway.

In Hobby Stock action, Reed Stickel started third, and took the lead by the 5th lap.  Pressured hard from 5 time winner Derrick Hinish and 4 time winner Chuck Weyant, Stickel remained cool and earned his second victory of the season.  Following Stickel, Hinish, and Weyant was Brandon LaSalle and Jason Gilliland.  Mandy Jay finished sixth, with Ray Shepherd, Justin Milburn, Ryan Beckett, and Terry Thomas completing the top ten.  Stickel and Charlie Walter won the heat events.

This Friday, August 24th is Legends of Bedford Speedway night.  The Super Late Models, Limited Late Models, and Hobby Stocks will be on hand plus several legends of racing from the past.  The Street Stocks will take the night off.  Just around the corner on August 31st is the annual season ending Labor Day 55, the final point race for all four divisions, with the Super Lates running 55 laps for $,5,500.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

FEATHERS WINS A CLOSE ONE AT BEDFORD

By Dave Harclerode

BEDFORD, PA - It was Blackburn Russell night at the Bedford Speedway Friday, and the evening's racing event was a good one. Potentially damaging midweek heavy rains had little affect on the Speedway surface, and the track was smooth and fast, as it has been for most of the season. Bo Feathers won his third Miller Auto Parts Super Late Model feature of the season, in a thrilling race which saw four lead changes in the first 5 laps. Brian Lowery ended a long cold streak by winning the Bedford Valley Petroleum Limited Late Model feature, and Bob Jay continued his dominance, winning the TC Race Cars Street Stock feature event. In the Ritchey Sandblasting Hobby Stock division, point leader Chuck Weyant took his fourth win of the season.

Bo Feathers and Jeff Rine made up the front row of the starting lineup for the Super Late Model main event, and immediately the pair got down to business. Very reminiscent of the incredible show the duo put on back on May 4th, Feathers and Rine ran side by side, exchanging the lead several times early in the race. In the May 4th event, it was Rine running the top side, with Feathers giving chase on the bottom. The roles were reversed on Friday night, with Feathers rolling the top, and Rine giving chase on the bottom. The pair raced like that the entire event, with Feathers gaining a slight advantage each lap up to the mid-race mark. Meanwhile, Wayne Johnson and seventh starting Steve Everhart were mirroring the front pair. Johnson on top, Everhart on the bottom, the pair battled fiercely lap after lap. One of the big stories of the evening was weekly crowd thriller Jack Pencil. Pencil, who had to leave the pre-race staging area for a quick pit stop, was relegated to the last place starting position just before the field took the green. From his last place position, Pencil took off, taking the field to school like a good middle school math teacher would. By lap 19 Pencil was in the 5th position, but his charge to the front got a little bit tougher when he came upon the Johnson and Everhart duo. As those two drivers battled side by side for the third position, Pencil worked hard for some racing room to get by. Pencil found his speed on using the top side of the track, but this is where Johnson had his best line. Several times the the trio came off of turn 4 three wide, but Pencil always managed to get squeezed back to the tailgunner position. At the front of the pack, Jeff Rine's bid for the lead started to wane in the final few laps, and Bo Feathers went on to victory by five car lengths. Second place Rine had a tire go down on the cool down lap, and was very fortunate there wasn't a late race caution. The three car battle for third ended up with Johnson securing the spot at the line, followed by Pencil and Everhart. Chris Harr, who ran solid all race finished sixth, and Nick Dickson, Scott Rhodes, Dave Troutman, and Scott Haus rounded out the top ten. Haus won his heat race event in convincing style, completely decimating the field as he ran blistering lap times. That magic seemed to slip away at feature time though, as Haus slipped five positions during the event. Other heat race winners were Harr and Johnson.

Brian Lowery earned his first ever Bedford Speedway Limited Late Model feature win, but it wasn't easy. Running the top groove, Lowery was pressured by DJ Troutman for much of the race. Troutman actually took the lead from Lowery on lap 11, but a caution for Lincoln Ritchey negated the lead change. The pair, both hailing from Hyndman, PA, ran 1-2 for the remainder of the race. Lowery made contact with the outside wall with two laps to go, but stayed in command and took home the win. Troutman settled for second, and Mike Shoemaker, Tim Smith, Jr., and pole sitter Andy Teno completed the top five. Sixth through tenth went to Shawn Claar, Travis Calhoun, Tyler Ritchey, Robbie Black, and George Beckett. Claar and Calhoun won the heat events.

Bob Jay started seventh in the Street Stock feature, and it only took 9 laps to get to the top spot. Michael Stiffler took the lead from Travis Brown on the second lap, but mechanical problems slowed Stiffler's ride, and Jay had a relatively easy time winning the event. Brandon Hoover wound up second, his career best finish at Bedford. Rick Cragan, who suffered a late race flat, recovered for third, Brown finished fourth, and newcomer Chris Chamberlain brought his new Chevy home in fifth. Stiffler won the heat race. The win was Jay's 19th career Bedford Street Stock win, which puts him 2 wins behind all-time division win leader Kevin Weyandt.

Chuck Weyant extended his point lead in the Hobby Stock division by earning his ninth career win at the big Bedford oval. The race got off to a rough start when a lapped car bunched the leaders up in turns three and four on the fourth lap, which led to a big mid pack pile up. Gary Morder, Ray Shepherd, Justin Milburn, Eric Weyant, and Jason Gilliland sat in a mangled pile just past the scoreboard. Weyant and Gilliland retired from the race with heavy damage, including a fire under Weyant's number 88e which was put out by the Bedford Fire Dept. When racing resumed, all went smoothly as Chuck Weyant led Reed Stickel to the finish. Charlie Walter finished third, Shawn Dunmyer fourth, and Brandon LaSalle fifth. Rounding out the top ten was Mike Siegele, Ryan Beckett, Shepherd, and Milburn. Chuck Weyant and Charlie Walter won the heat races.

Originally just a regular four division show, this Friday's event has been turned into a grand affair. Friday, August 17th, the Super Late Models will be racing Twin 20's for a $1,000 to win each. The Limited Late Models will be running Twin 15's for $ 500 to win each. There will be a $500 Bonus to any driver who can win both features in their division. Qualifying for the events will be via pill draw and heat races for the first feature. The first winner will then draw a pill for inversion for the second feature. The extra purse money doesn't stop with the late models, as the Street Stocks will be running for $ 400 to win, and the Hobby Stocks will be racing for double the regular purse. The annual Powder Puff will be the nightcap for what will be a great night of racing. Fans will be permitted to enter the pits at 6:15pm for driver autographs. Hot laps will be begin at 7pm, with racing starting at 7:30. General admission will be $15, and $25 for the pits.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

CORNMAN BAGS OVER A THOUSAND DOLLARS IN BEDFORD STREET STOCK SPECIAL

By Dave Harclerode

BEDFORD, PA -  The Bedford Speedway had their annual Walt Aikey Memorial Street Stock Special Friday evening, and Daniel Cornman led all 30 laps to take home the $600 winner's share plus over $400 in lap money, which was generously donated by fans and local businesses.  The Super Late Models had the week off, but the Limited Late Models stepped up and put on a great show for the late model diehard fans.  Shawn Claar won his second feature of the season, and he too earned an extra $225 in lap money on top of his winnings.  Charlie Walter won for the first time in his career at Bedford in the Hobby Stock division, and received an extra $175 in lap money on top of his prize money.

The Walt Aikey memorial has become an annual event that many in the TC Race Cars sponsored Street Stock division look forward to.  It's the highest paying event for the division at the Speedway, and cars from all over the region are invited to come and take on the Bedford regulars with a "your own track's rules" format.  Daniel Cornman, a regular at the Rock Speedway in Cumberland is no stranger to Bedford.  His win Friday night was his 13th Street Stock win of his career at Bedford, he fended off some of the best in the business.  Bill Henney, the 2006 Aikey Memorial winner was knocking at the door for the second half of the 30 lap event, but Cornman was up for the challenge, keeping Henney at an arm length all the way to the checkered.  Jamie Swank came home third, and Donald Wyles was the first Bedford regular across the line in fourth.  Greg Cornell finished fifth, and was followed by Scott White, Brandon Hoover, Greg Hainsey, Terry Wyles, and Bob Jay.  Jay, who has been on a hot streak at Bedford, dropped out of the race with a broken rear while running fourth.  Donald Wyles and Henney won the qualifying events.

In Bedford Valley Petroleum Limited Late Model action, Shawn Claar was victorious, but not without a fight.  Tyler Hershey, Tim Smith, Jr., and Andy Fries all battled relentlessly until Fries finally secured the spot and started reeling in race leader Claar.  Fries appeared to have everything working in fine condition and was giving Claar a very serious challenge for the top spot when a caution came out with four laps to go.  The caution was unkind to Fries, and a mechanical malfunction ended his strong bid for the win.  In the final laps, Smith slipped by into second, and followed Claar to the checkered.  Fries battled a broken suspension part and came home third, followed by Hershey and Mike Altobelli, Jr.  Unfortunately, Altobelli refused to allow a post race engine seal check, and was disqualified.  Robbie Black was then scored in the fifth spot, with Andy Teno sixth, Randy Burkholder seventh, and Jerry Bard, Bob Dunn, and Mike Shoemaker rounding out the top ten.  Teno was the hard charger, advancing 11 positions.  Hershey, Fries, and Bard won the heat race events.

Charlie Walter ran a fine race to win the Ritchey Sandblasting Hobby Stock feature.  Relatively a newcomer, Charlie held many of Bedford's top Hobby Stock drivers at bay on his way to victory.  Following Walter was Chuck Weyandt, Reed Stickel, and former division ace Shawn Wyles, who just recently came out of retirement.  Mandy Jay was fifth, and sixth through tenth went to Brandon LaSalle, Jason Gilliland, Eric Weyant, Ray Shepherd, and Justin Milburn.  Walter and Stickel won the heats.

The Classic Cars were on hand for the first time ever at Bedford, and the 305 engine, coupe bodied, street stock style chassis cars put on a great show.  Bill Brown, Sr. won this inaugural event, fending off a hard charging Glenn Elliott, who came all the way from the 13th starting spot.  Kurt Welsh, Brian Diehl, and Joe Snodgrass rounded out the top five.  Completing the top ten was Roland Brown, Jack Yingling, Jim Crocker, Joe Alder, and Mike Schultz.  Brown, Sr. and Welsh won the heat events.

The Miller Auto Parts Super Late Models will be back in action this Friday, along with Limited Late Models, Street Stocks, and Hobby Stocks for a regular 4 division show.  Also included will be another round of kid's car rides, which will start at 6:15pm.  Hot laps will begin at 7pm, with racing at 7:30.  Coming Friday, August 17th - it's Twin 20's for the Super Lates, and Twin 15's for the Limited Lates.  There will be $500 added to the Street Stock purse, and the Hobby Stocks will be racing for double purse.  Please call the speedway office with questions regarding this schedule change on the 17th.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

TROUTMAN, SHOEMAKER, JAY AND WEYANT WIN BEDFORD FAIR RACES

By Dave Harclerode

BEDFORD, PA - Every driver wants to perform well at the Great Bedford Fair race. A capacity crowd and a race that's as old as the speedway are a few of the reasons drivers work hard to excel on fair night. The track surface was in excellent shape Friday, and four drivers earned the right to stand in victory lane in front of thousands of fans. Dave Troutman earned his first ever Bedford Speedway Super Late Model win, and Mike Shoemaker turned a cold season hot by winning a wild Limited Late Model feature. Bob Jay earned his 5th Street Stock win of the season, and Chuck Weyant won his third of the season in the Hobby Stock Division. The Fair race has now been dubbed the Dick Koontz Memorial, with Friday being the first one. Dick was a long time Fairboard member and race director, and is sorely missed by all at the speedway.

Dave Troutman was untouchable in the Super Late Model main event. Starting on the pole, Troutman immediately grabbed the top spot and assumed control. The racing behind him was exciting, as Chris Harr and Jeff Rine battled side by side for second for much of the race. Jack Pencil, who started 9th, worked his way up to fourth to make it a 3 car battle. Unfortunately for Pencil, a flat tire with 4 laps to go send him to the tail of the field after a brief stop in the pits. Two other drivers were also putting on a great show the entire race. Scott Haus, who started 16th, and Steve Everhart (started 14th) were charging through the field. Using the bottom, top and middle, the pair made an impressive run all the way to the top five. At the finish, it was Troutman winning comfortably over Harr, Rine, Everhart, and Haus. Wayne Johnson finished sixth, and Ron Delano, Scott Rhodes, Chuck Clise, and Jeff Miller rounded out the top ten. Heat race winners were Dave Troutman, Jeff Rine, and DJ Troutman.

In Limited Late Model action, pole sitter Andy Fries looked to emulate Troutman's Super Late Model run by getting out front early, and staying there until the end. It was a good plan, and it almost worked, but others in the field had different ideas. George Beckett hounded Fries lap after lap, and just would not let him get comfortable. Pulling along side several times, Beckett was unable to take the top spot away. Mike Shoemaker, who started 7th, worked his way up to third, got past Beckett for 2nd, and he took over where Beckett left off. It came down to the final lap. Fries held the same line that had kept him out front all race long, but Shoemaker made a last ditch effort going into turn one. Driving his car deep and high into the corner, Shoemaker made his car stick, and the pair came out of two side by side. Running the high side and again driving it deep, Shoemaker had the pass completed by the time they came out of turn 4. The fans were on their feet as Shoemaker, fist pumping the air in triumph, took the checkered just inches ahead of Fries. Beckett turned in a solid run finishing third, ahead of Tim Smith, Jr. and Derek Byler. Sixth through tenth went to Dave Troutman, who was pulling double duty, Donnie Farlling, Tyler Hershey, Andy Teno, and Craig Perigo. Fries, Troutman, and Smith won the heat events.

Bob Jay continued his winning ways in the Street Stock division. Starting on the pole, most on hand figured after the season he's had, Jay would win easily. Not so. Second starting Johnny Harr immediately grabbed the first spot, and led for 3 laps until Jay made the move for the lead. Ninth starting Michael Stiffler also passed Harr, and at the finish it was Jay, Stiffler, Harr, Greg Hainsey, and Brandon Hoover. Rounding out the top ten was Greg Cornell, Shelly Beegle, Jason Douglas, Greg Imler, and Rick Cragan.

Chuck Weyant came all the way from the 9th starting position to win the Hobby Stock feature event. Weyant was followed to the line by Charlie Walter, Curtis Heath, Derrick Hinish, and Shawn Wyles. Sixth through tenth went to Reed Stickel, Jamie Kohan, Devin Weyandt, Mark Shope, and Terry Thomas. Derrick Hinish, Shawn Wyles, and Chuck Weyant won the heat events. There was a total of 6 cautions in the feature. Several newcomers were on hand, with most of them performing well.

Next week at the speedway, it's the Walt Aikey Memorial for the Street Stocks. Also on hand will be the Limited Late Models, Hobby Stocks, and the Classic Cars will make a visit to the big Bedford oval. The Super Late Models will take the week off. Gates open at 5pm, with hot laps at 7pm, and racing at 7:30.

Bedford Speedway

The 72 lap Paul Johnson Memorial saw a very happy Bo Feathers in Rickets Construction Victory Lane, winning it for the 4th time. It was double jeopardy for Feathers, because he had just came off a big MACS win in Bedford, Pa. the night before. There were 28 cars trying to take the green flag in the memorial race but only 24 could start the field. Polesitter, Allan Brannon, took the green and led the field till the first caution would fly on lap 2. At the caution, 4th place starter, Denny Bonebrake would go pitside with mechancial trouble. Brannon would continue to lead but J.T. Spence wasn't going to allow that too happen for long. Taking over the lead by lap 4, Spence was out front and looking very smooth till he would come to turns 1 & 2 where the 0 of Lewis Hudson would turn sideways, leaving Spence no where to go but come to a stop side by side with Hudson. Spence now would have to tag on to the rear of the field, handing the lead over to the 00 of Bo Feathers on lap 22. By this point, Feathers would have to contend with 2nd place runner Tommy Armel and Allan Brannon. On the restart Feather jumped out front and he looked like he had no intention of giving up this special victory. With a fuel stop coming soon, Feathers started lapping the field and looking like he was in cruise control around the track. On lap 40 all the cars were stopped for a quick fuel stop, but at the start of the race, caution #7 would fly with several being caught up in turns 1 & 2. These cars included Gerald Davis, Ronnie Dehaven Jr., Jonathan Dehaven, and Jeremy Miller. Davis & Miller were able to continue but the Dehavens would go pitside. At this point of the race, with so many cautions beforehand only 15 cars would restart on lap 42. By lap 45, the race was on for 2nd place, between Tommy Armel and Allan Brannon with Wayne Walls and Booper Bare finishing out the top five. Bare who started in 18th position was moving up on the slick track and managed to capture 4th place by lap 60. With only 12 laps left and Feathers way out front it looked like this would be the way it would end and so it did. With Bo Feathers capturing his 4th Paul Johnson Memorial, Tommy Armel came home 2nd, Allan Brannon in 3rd, Booper Bare was 4th and Wayne Walls Jr. ended up 5th. Finishing out the top 10 was Walter Crouch, Brian Tavenner, Tony Crim, Brad Omps and Wayne Johnson. Heat winners went to Andy Anderson, Denny Bonebrake, and J.T. Spence. Consy winner was Ronnie Dehaven Jr. The Ernies Salvage Yard Hard Charger went too Booper Bare.
The Pro-Imaging LLC Semi-Late division saw Dennis Lamb in victory lane for the 6th time this season.
Lamb, who started on the pole took the green flag and led every lap of the 15 lap feature. Bubby Dillman who finished 2nd respectively, tried on each restart but with Lamb hugging the bottom, the outside groove just wasn't there for Dillman. When the 2nd caution fell on lap 5 it was Lamb, Dillman, Sean Dawson, Rob Nichols and the 01 of Moe Harden in the top five, but by lap 10 the names had changed and a hard charging Brian Buckler who was last weeks winner had moved to 4th and now would make things interesting in the last few laps. When the last caution fell on lap 13, Buckler had moved to third and was on the move but would run out of laps with Lamb taking the win. Dillman would come home 2nd, Buckler was 3rd, Nichols was 4th and Matt Hardy, with a great finish, in 5th. Heat winners went too Dillman & Buckler. The Rose's Plumbing Hard Charger went to Buckler who started 12th and finished 3rd.
The Niningers Tire & Auto Sale Pure Stocks saw its 10th different winner in victory lane, with Bobby Franklin taking the checkered.
Franklin started on the pole with the 170 of Ed Mclellan starting alongside. With the wave of the green flag, Franklin would jump to the front and never look back, leading every lap of the 15 lap feature. The real battle on the race track would be for 2nd place, between Mclellan and Matt Kerns. These two cars ran side by side for a couple of laps till the 42* of Kerns, would eventually grab 2nd and stay there for the remainder of the race. By lap 10 it would be Kerns fighting Franklin for the lead, with these two drivers racing bumper to bumper, and the #15 of Michael Carter racing side by side with #8 of Bobby Gladden for 3rd and 4th place respectively. In the end it would be Franklin taking the checkered with, Kerns, Carter, Gladden, and Donnie Kenney rounding out the top five. Heat race winners went too Donnie Kenney and David Kaiser.
The Trademaster Drywall 4 Cylinder division saw Roger Whitlock coming across the checkered flag in fine fashion. The 22 car field had 3 cautions during the 15 lap feature but that didn't stop a great race that had fans on their edge of their seats for the last few laps of the race. Whitlock started on the outside pole and held off Chuck Johnson and Mark Diggs to take the victory. Whitlock led every lap but by lap 6, Whitlock and Chuck Johnson was bumper to bumper around the track. By lap 10 Diggs, who was last weeks winner and started 12th, was starting to close in and make his was to the front. By lap 12, Diggs had grabbed 2nd, with Johnson a close 3rd. With 15 laps narrowing, it was white flag time and it was Whitlock & Diggs but now Greg Keister was closing in for 3rd, Johnson 4th and the 12C of Delmas Moreland, 5th. When the checkered fell, Whitlock would come across the line first, along with Diggs, Keister, Johnson and Moreland. Heat winners went too Ed Gageby & Diggs.
Next Saturday, July 21, the Winchester Speedway will host a regular show for LM, SL, PS, and 4C, sponsored by Mayhew Chevrolet of Romney W.V. Also on the agenda will be Kids Night at the races, make a poster of your favorite driver. See you at the races.

PENCIL FLYING HIGH IN IMPRESSIVE SWEITZER MEMORIAL WIN

By Dave Harclerode

BEDFORD, PA - All four divisions ran for extra money and extended laps in the annual Bob Sweitzer Memorial race at the Bedford Speedway. Jack Pencil came from mid-pack to take the $2,100 to win 30 lap Miller Auto Parts Super Late Model main event. Tim Smith, Jr., also came from mid-pack to win the $1,100 to win 30 lap Bedford Valley Petroleum Limited Late Model Feature. Michael Stiffler earned his first ever victory at Bedford in the 25 lap TC Race Cars Street Stock special, and Derrick Hinish earned his fifth victory of the season in the 25 lap Ritchey Sandblasting Hobby Stocks.

The Super Late Model 30 lapper was a great opportunity for the local boys to get dialed in for next week's MACS race, and Bedford Speedway/MACS regular Jack Pencil appears to be ready. Second generation driver Andy Martz and Coleby Frye made up the front row when the full field of cars took the green, and Martz immediately took the point and paced the field. A big turn 4 crash in the first few laps sent many top competitors to the rear of the field, including Scott Rhodes, Larry Wright, TJ Wright, Wayne Johnson, Jeff Miller, and Nick Dickson. Dickson was sidelined after the accident. On the restart, Martz again held the point and kept Coleby Frye in check as the laps dwindled down. Three cars were on the move, most noticeably Jack Pencil. Pencil ran the high groove, almost scraping the wall lap after lap in turns 3 and 4. Each lap, he guided his #14 with precision, using an unusual line rarely seen at the big Bedford oval. Coming from his 9th starting position, Jack put on a show as picked of car after car, and going three wide to pass Ron Delano and Eric Zembower. When the field took the 1/2 way flags, Pencil flew around Martz on the top for the lead and never looked back. Jeff Rine and Gary Stuhler were also on the move, but used the bottom groove to make their advancements. Rine advanced 9 spots to take home seventh, and Gary Stuhler worked up to 10th from his dismal 25th starting spot. Pencil, Martz, Frye, Eric Zembower, and Greg Fetters completed the top five at the checkered. Sixth through tenth went to Chris Harr, Rine, DJ Myers, DJ Troutman, and Gary Stuhler. Troutman, Zembower, and Martz won the qualifying events. Although there were 27 cars on hand, the consi was scrapped and the decision was made to start all 27. One car wasn't able to start, so 26 cars took the green. It was the third win of the season for point leader Pencil, and the 20th of his career at Bedford.

Tim Smith, Jr. became the first repeat winner of the season in the ultra competitive Limited Late Model division. Smith paid attention has Jack Pencil decimated the field using the high side in the feature prior to the Limited Lates, and he put a plan together that had the same results. Similar to the Super Late feature winner, Smith also started in the 9th position. Smith was patient at first, waiting for the field ahead of him to sort itself out. Once he hit the top groove, the position advancements came quick. Donnie Farlling held the top spot as Howie Bussard, George Fireball Beckett and Craig Perigo battled for third. Smith zoomed by everyone, taking his second win of the season. Farlling nailed a solid second, and Perigo won the battle for third, ahead of Beckett and Bussard. Mike Shoemaker, Tyler Hershey, Randy Burkholder, Shawn Claar, and Mike Altobelli, jr. completed the top ten. The similarities between Pencil and Smith Friday night were almost eerie, as Smith also scored his 20th career victory at the Speedway in his respective division. Smith, Beckett, and Tyler Hershey won the heats.

Michael Stiffler drove a flawless race in the Street Stock feature, fending off a flurry of challenges from Bob Jay and Dave Brown. Stiffler started on the pole, and in just a few short laps, seventh starting Bob Jay was on his tail. Jay made a challenge for the lead every single lap, pulling side by side, doing everything possible to gain the top spot. But Stiffler maintained his line lap after lap, unfazed by the screaming Ford of Jay right beside him. With 12 laps to go, Jay got under Stiffler going into turn 3, but had to spin the car to avoid contact. This put Dave Brown on Stiffler's tail, and on the restart, Brown nearly snagged the lead. Stiffler stayed strong though, and fended off the challenge. Jay was able to work all the way back to 2nd to put on a late race challenge, but it was Stiffler picking up the victory ahead of Jay, Brown, Travis Brown, and Brandon Hoover. Jay won the lone qualifying event.

Derrick Hinish won his 4th consecutive Hobby Stock feature, and 5th of the season Friday. Hinish advanced 7 spots to take the win ahead of Reed Stickel and Mandy Jay, who slipped by early race leader Chuck Weyant late in the race. Weyant held on for fourth, and Shawn Dunmeyer took home fifth. Jason Gilliland, Devin Weyandt, Bob Brumbaugh, Eric Weyant, and Matt Thomas completed the top ten. Heats were won by Hinish and Bill Replogle.

The MACS Super Late Models will invade Bedford on Friday, July 13th for a 50 lap $5,000 to win special. The Hobby Stocks will be on hand racing for double purse, and ADDED to the program will be the Limited Late Models, racing 30 laps for $1,000 to win. Gates open at 5pm, with warm ups at 7pm, and racing at 7:30pm. General admission will be $20, and $30 for the pits.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

KAUFFMAN ON A RAIL AT BEDFORD'S INAUGURAL SPEEDWEEK SHOW

By Dave Harclerode

BEDFORD, PA -  Keith Kauffman is the all-time Bedford Speedway feature winner, and Sunday night he proved why.  The Cindy Rowe Auto Glass Pennsylvania Speedweek Series made it's first ever visit to Bedford, the show was a huge success.  Kauffman stuck to the big Bedford oval like glue, and took home the $ 5,000 winner's paycheck for the Middleswarth Potato Chip team.  In other action, Bob Jay won his fourth Street Stock feature of the season.  The Williams Grove Old Timers were also on hand with a display on the midway, and some hot laps before the big sprint car main event.

The best in the business were on hand for the 410 sprint show, with 24 cars taking time trials.  Brian Leppo set fast time with a blistering 16.647 lap, which blew away the old track record set by Lance Dewease in 2001.  Alan Cole won the opening heat race, and Niki Young won the second.  Cliff Brain won third qualifying event, which had a scary event on the frontstretch.  Jim "Cowboy" Kennedy had a huge oil fire shooting from under the hood as he sped down the frontstretch.  Jim managed to get the car stopped in turn one, and emerged unharmed.  The A-main feature event went 30 laps without any major incidents.  Kauffman started on the pole, and immediately grabbed the lead at the drop of the green.  Stevie Smith was in tow, but could never get any closer than one car length.  The action on the track was fierce, with many battles happening throughout the field.  Doug Esh, Kevin Nouse, and Cliff Brian thrilled fans as they ran right against the wall in turn three.  Kauffman took the checkered to earn his 7th career Bedford victory, and was followed by Stevie Smith, Speedweek opening night winner Greg Hodnett, Todd Shaffer, and Lucas Wolfe.  Sixth through tenth went to Mike Wagner, TJ Stutts, Lance Dewease, Kevin Nouse, and Chad Layton.

The TC Race Cars Street Stock feature was one of the wildest of the season.  Bob Jay and Jamey Swank ran door handle to door handle nearly the entire race, trading paint and rubber almost every lap.  Michael Stiffler was the early race leader, until Swank caught and passed him for the lead.  At first, it was Swank, Stiffler, and Jay in a 3 car battle, but once Jay got by Stiffler, it was a two car show.  Lap after lap, the the Swank and Jay show had fans on their feet.  Finally, Jay completed the pass after the pair drove deep into turn one, nearly hitting the outside retaining wall.  Swank held on for second, and was followed by Stiffler, Dave Brown, and Donald Wyles.  Jay and Swank won the heat events.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

PENCIL EARNS 50TH CAREER BEDFORD WIN

By Dave Harclerode

BEDFORD, PA -  Bedford's own Jack Pencil became the first driver in the track's 71 year history to win 50 feature events when he won the Miller Auto Parts Super Late Model main event Friday night.  The win was Jack's 19th Bedford career Late Model win, and combined with previous Semi-Late and Street Stock wins, Jack is the all-time feature win leader.  Tim Smith ran a superb race to win the Bedford Valley Petroleum Limited Late Model feature, and Bob Jay won his third TC Racecars Street Stock feature of the season.  Derrick Hinish, who has had quite a season already, amassed his fourth win of the season in the Ritchey Sandblasting Hobby Stocks.

It was a big night for Jack Pencil.  His win Friday made him the first repeat winner of the season in the Super Late Model division, and it also moved him from third place into first in the points championship.  Pencil started the feature event on the pole, and immediately put his car into cruise control in the top groove.  Chris Harr worked his way into second from his sixth place starting spot, and a late race caution on lap 18 put him right on Pencil's tail.  Pencil was too strong though, and held on for the win.  Harr was second, Dave Troutman third, Eric Zembower fourth, and Greg Fetters fifth.  Steve Everhart, Scott Rhodes, Scott Haus, Andy Martz, and Ron Delano rounded out the top ten.  For the second week in a row, Scott Haus was the man on the move, this week moving up seven positions from the 15th starting spot.  Jeff Rine fell from second in points to fifth when severe engine problems hampered his evening.  Buddy Lape from Lakewood Amoco drove all the way to Woodbury with his rollback to pick up the Bob Elbin owned # 92 back up car to salvage some points.  Troutman, Harr, and Delano won the qualifying events.

Tim Smith put his Ford in victory lane for the 19th time in his career in the Limited Late Model division.  Mike Shoemaker paced the field for most of the race, but Smith, who started fifth, was on his tail with 10 to go.  Smith worked hard, but was cautious and waited for the right moment.  That moment came with 6 laps to go, when Smith zoomed by into the lead coming off of turn four.  Smith won by several car lengths over Shoemaker, Randy Burkholder, Mike Altobelli, Jr., and Matt Sponaugle.  Sixth through tenth went to Shawn Claar, Derek Byler, Travis Calhoun, Robbie Black, and Justin Kann.  Kann and Burkholder won the heats.

Bob Jay earned his 16th career Street Stock feature win.  Jay, who started eighth, picked his way through the field until he was on race leader Travis Brown's tail.  Brown, who was looking to pick up his first Bedford victory, was overtaken by Jay and was left to battle for second with Brandon Hoover once Jay checked out.  At the finish, it was Jay, Brown, Hoover, Donald Wyles, and Tim Brindle.  Johnny Harr, Rick Cragan, Greg Hainsey, Michael Stiffler, and Greg Imler completed the top ten.  John Whitfield finished the event in 2nd, but a post race inspection deemed his car to be illegal, and he was credited with last place.  Halfway through the feature event, a power failure led to a 20 minute delay as two banks of lights went out on the frontstretch.  Hoover and Jay won the heat races.

Derrick Hinish started seventh, and finished first in the Cruiser Hobby Stock nightcapper.  Reed Stickel was second, point leader Chuck Weyant third, Tyler Ritchey fourth, and Mandy Jay fifth.  Rounding out the top ten was Brandon LaSalle, Jason Gilliland, Ray Shepherd, Eric Weyant, and Matt Thomas.  Shawn Dunmeyer and Reed Stickel won the heat events.

The next race at the speedway will be Wednesday, June 27th.  The Sweitzer Memorial Wednesday night Invitational will pay $2,000 to the winner of the Super Late Model race, and over $1,000 to the winner of the Limited Late Model race.  Also on hand will be the Hobby Stocks.  There will be no racing Friday, and Sunday, July 1st the PA Sprint Car Speedweek Series will be on hand along with the Street Stocks.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

RINE, ALTOBELLI, JAY, AND HINISH WIN BEDFORD FEATURES

By Dave Harclerode

BEDFORD, PA - After suffering 2 rainouts in a row, the Bedford Speedway finally got the weather it needed to put racecars on the track. The cloudy day led to a perfect track surface, giving the racers the ability to race where ever they wanted to on the track. Jeff Rine, who ran the high groove, was hooked up like a slotcar as he won the Miller Auto Parts Super Late Model main event. Mike Altobelli, Jr. ran the low groove, and had an awesome battle with Al Shawver to win the Bedford Valley Petroleum Limited Late Model event. Bob Jay put his Ford in victory lane for the second time this season in the TC Racecars Street Stocks, and Derrick Hinish earned his third win of the season in the Ritchey Sandblasting Hobby Stocks. The Williams Grove Oldtimer's Assoc. was also on hand with a display of vintage racecars on the midway. The old cars hit the track just before hot laps for some play time, bringing back memories for many fans.

The fact that Jeff Rine started on the outside pole and won, and Ron Delano started on the pole and finished second may sound like it was a ho-hum race. This was not the case. Rine and Delano were blistering fast, and the action behind them was incredible. Twenty-seven cars started the feature event, and 23 finished. Wayne Johnson, Eric Zembower, and Andy Martz ran a tight race for third early, but it wasn't long before 9th place starter Jack Pencil was working the highside of the track, and earned the third spot by lap 11. Scott Rhodes was also a man on the move, as he used both the top and the bottom of the track to come from 12th to fourth. Behind the top three of Rine, Delano, and Pencil, the action was fierce as cars covered the track top and bottom, battling all the way to the finish. Scott Haus may have been one of the most impressive drivers of the night, starting 26th and and passing 19 cars to take home seventh. The top five at the checkered was Rine, Delano, Pencil, Rhodes, and Johnson. Following them was Zembower, Haus, Andy Martz, Chris Harr, and DJ Troutman. Chuck Clise, Rine, and Nick Dickson won the qualifying events for the 28 car field. The win was Rine's fourth of his career at Bedford.

Al Shawver led the area's best Limited Late Model drivers to the starting line, and immediately took the top spot. By the second lap though, Mike Altobelli, Jr. was pounding out at the door. After 2 laps of working Shawver hard, Altobelli made an aggressive move coming off of turn four. The pair ran metal to metal down the frontstretch, and by the time they hit turn 2, Altobelli had the top spot. Altobelli pulled out to a slim lead, but a caution canceled the margin. On the restart, Shawver through caution to the wind, diving to the outside and pulling even with the race leader. Altobelli was tough on the bottom though, and prevailed for the victory. Shawver settled for second, with Tim Smith, Jr. third, Donnie Farlling fourth, and young Randy Burkholder came all the way from 15th to finish fifth. Completing the top ten was Mike Shoemaker, Travis Stickley, Shawn Claar, Robbie Black, and Travis Calhoun. Smith and Shawver won the heats. The win was the sixth of Altobelli's career at Bedford.

Bob Jay is as tough as they come in the Street Stock world. Jay drew the number one pill for the feature lineup, and this did not bode well for the rest of the field. Jay led all 18 laps, and was never seriously challenged. Rick Cragan earned the second spot after original second place finisher Terry Wyles was disqualified for a rule infraction. Former Bedford Street Stock star Johnny Harr made his return to the division, and finished third on his first time out. Brandon Hoover and Willie Ling completed the top five. Cragan and Jay won the heat events.

Chuck Weyant and Shelly Beegle brought the Hobby Stocks to the green flag in the final event of the evening. Almost immediately, Reed Stickel jumped from fifth to second as Chuck Weyant led the event. The pair ran side by side for two laps until contact between the two brought out the first caution. Weyant went to the rear of the field, and Stickel made a quick stop in the pits, and returned, lined up dead last. Derrick Hinish inherited the lead on the restart, with rookie sensation Tyler Ritchey on his tail. Mandy Jay drove a great race, and worked by Ritchey for second as Hinish led comfortably. They finished like that, Hinish, Jay, and Ritchey. Amazingly, Chuck Weyant and Reed Stickel picked their way through the field to come back and finish fourth and fifth. Brandon LaSalle, David Riley, Mike Siegele, Jason Gilliland, and Ray Shepherd completed the top ten. Stickel and Hinish won the qualifying events.

Next Friday, June 22nd is Kid's Night at the Speedway. There will be an autograph session with the drivers, and the kids will get a chance to show their racing skills in the annual Kid's Bike Races. You can pre-register for the event by calling the speedway office at 814-623-0826. The Miller Auto Parts Super Late Models, Bedford Valley Petroleum Limited Late Models, TC Racecars Street Stocks, and Ritchey Sandblasting Hobby Stocks will be on hand for a regular points event. Gates open at 5pm, hot laps at 7pm, and racing at 7:30pm.

Coming, Wednesday, June 27th, it's the Bob Sweitzer Memorial Wednesday Night Invitational, paying $ 2,000 to win in the Super Late Model division. The Limited Lates will be racing for $1,000 to win, and the Hobby Stocks will also be on hand for double the regular purse. This will be a non-point event in all divisions.

WAGNER EARNS FIRST BEDFORD WIN

By Dave Harclerode

BEDFORD, PA - It was a long night, but well worth the wait Friday night at the Bedford Speedway. Heavy rain hit the speedway shortly after 5pm, causing a delay that lasted over two hours. The track crew, along with many racecars, worked the speedway back into shape, and the end result was one fast racing surface. The Miller Auto Parts Super Late Models were racing for 30 laps and $2,000 to win, and Waylon Wagner wowed fans by passing superstar racer Gary Stuhler on lap 18 to win the Spring Championship event. The Bedford Valley Petroleum Limited Late Models were also racing for extra money and extra laps, and Shawn Claar led flag to flag to pick up the win. Donald Wyles earned his first ever TC Race Cars Street Stock victory at Bedford, and Derrick Hinish became Bedford's first repeat winner this season when he won the Ritchey Sandblasting Hobby Stock feature.

Thirty Super Late Models were in the pits, and the competition was fierce. Gary Stuhler started on the pole for the 30 lap main event, and immediately set the pace with Shawn Claar following, and Waylon Wagner third. A hard crash in turn four on lap four brought out the first caution of the race. Rick Singleton, Coleby Frye, and Ron Delano all ended up on the hook and taken pitside. On the restart, Stuhler pulled away to a comfortable lead as Wagner disposed of Claar and trailed several car lengths back. Slowly, Wagner began to gain on Stuhler's # 90, and with 12 to go, made the pass for the lead in turn 3. The action throughout the pack was wild, to say the least. There was intense racing throughout the field the entire race. Bo Feathers was the man on the move, coming from 15th all the way to third at one point, but late in the race slid back to sixth. At the finish, it was Wagner, Stuhler, Travis Dillman, Bob Salathe, and DJ Troutman. Sixth through tenth went to Feathers, Mike Lupfer, Scott Haus from the 18th starting spot, consi winner Jeff Miller from the 22nd starting spot, and Chris Harr, who started last. Qualifying event winners were Lupfer, Salathe, and Wagner.

Shawn Claar, who had a great run in the Super Late Model feature before dropping out with mechanical problems, was set to start on the pole for the Limited Late Model feature. The 25 lap feature was filled with cautions, possibly due to the extremely fast racing surface. There wasn't a straight piece of sheet metal anywhere. Claar dominated the event, but it wasn't a walk in the park. Tim Smith, Jr. came from his 11th starting position to second, and with two to go was knocking on the door. Smith made it interesting, causing Claar fans to hold their breath for the final laps, but Claar ran a good line and held on for his second career Bedford Limited Late win. Smith followed in second, Bob Dunn third, Tyler Hershey fourth, and rookie Travis Stickley fifth. Rounding out the top ten, it was Travis Calhoun, Donnie Farlling, Randy Burkholder, Mike Altobelli, Jr., and Shawn Jones. Heats went to Brian Lowery, Robbie Black, and Shawn Claar.

Every single car that started the Street Stock feature had never won a Bedford street stock race before. The only two previous winners in the line up, Bob Jay and Terry Wyles, both were no shows for the feature due to mechanical troubles. Donald Wyles battled Mike Stiffler throughout the 15 lap event, with Wyles picking up his first ever win. Stiffler was second, Greg Imler third, and Jason Douglas and Rick Cragan completed the top five. Bob Jay won the lone heat race.

Derrick Hinish won his second career Hobby Stock feature, taking the checkered well after 1am. Hin
