RACE NOTES - 6/2/07

600 FEATURE GOES WIRE-TO-WIRE WITH NO YELLOWS

A "first" for Airport Speedway was tonight's (6/2) 600 Feature race. Jack Conover, driving JR Culler's Interstate Construction #89, started from the pole as a result of the "6 invert" from his Heat race. The field quickly strung out with Angelo Mercado in pursuit. Bob DeVault quickly moved to third with Randy Oswald and Stewart Carmichael rounding out the top five. Little or no contact with other cars was made during the event for a fast paced, "NO YELLOWS" Feature, that ended with Conover in Victory Lane. Only two cars dropped from the event with mechanical problems, leaving 16 to complete the 25 green flag circuits. Jim  Garrison and John Pruitte did not start.

The 270 Feature had Ken Andreas on the pole. Andreas took the lead on the start. Ryan Pilli got around Jimmy Tippin for second on lap 2. A hard charging David Brown Jr then moved around Pilli on lap 5 to take second. Andreas held the lead thru lap 20 with Brown in tow. However, on the 21st trip, mechanical woes struck the leader in turn 2 handing the lead to Brown's yellow #7 machine and the eventual victory. Pilli, Palmucci, Merriman and Elwell completed the top five. After congratulating Brown on the victory, Andreas noted that this was the second time his motor had let
him down on lap 21.

Barry Pollard was again in Victory Lane ahead of Rich Mellor and Jim Pollard. Courtney Johnson and Matt Budd brought the 125 field to the Green Flag. Johnson and Pollard ran 1-2 opening up a substantial lead thru lap 11. Jim Pollard moved his #11x past Johnson on lap 13. Rich Mellor was able to slingshot past the #11x on the restart on lap 20 and held second at the finish. Jim Pollard, Phil Durham and Matt Budd completed the top five.

Ryan Pilli had his #29 M&H machine on the pole for the 250 Stock Feature. It was Pilli and Elwell thru the early going, even after several Yellow Flag restarts. On the 19th circuit, Elwell was able to get by Pilli as he went a bit wide out of turn 4. Pilli tried to regain the lead on two later restarts, but was unable to make the pass. The Elwell/Pilli duel was followed at the finish by Jon Keller, Ed Wagner and Bryan Radcliff.

Dylon McMahon took the Junior Feature over Ernie Carlisle.


In the 250 Stock Make-up Feature from May 12, it was Richie Keller III over Ed Wagner, Marco Michetti, Ryan Pilli and Rich Keller Jr.

The May 12 Make-up 125 Feature welcomed Jim Pollard to Victory Lane. Pollard, starting third behind Ralph Parks and Shane Braxton, moved to the lead on lap 4 and never looked back.

Three Pole Sitters Claim Victories At Airport Speedway

Three of the four Feature winners went wire-to-wire for their wins. The only exception was the 250 Stock winner, Rich Keller, Jr who began his 25 laps from second. Pole sitter, Marco Michetti was cruising to make it a fourth when motor problems sidelined him on the 21st circuit handing the lead and win to Keller.

The 600cc Feature was all Bill Unglert from the pole as there were no real challengers to his run for the checkers. Several drivers, however, made good moves thru the event to have good finishing positions. Glenn Heverin, starting in 20th spot finished an impressive sixth, while Stewart Carmichael finished fourth from a tenth place start.

Josh Martin picked up his first win of the season in the 270cc Feature from the pole. Chuck Palmucci made a good run to the front finishing in second from a ninth place start. Ken Andreas, Eddie Wagner and David Brown, Jr rounded out the top five.

It was Barry Pollard picking up his third 125cc Feature win. Phil Durham, who started outside pole, had to retire after only two laps with mechanical failure. Shane Braxton took over the second spot and finishing position. Braxton got a run on the leader on a restart, but just couldn't hold on for a pass.

The 250cc Stock Feature had several position changes thru the field. Eddie Wagner claimed the #2 spot followed by Elwell, Schwander and Bellinger. One spectacular crash during the 250 Stock Heat race had  Bryan Radcliff flip his #8 machine, land on its wheels and was able to drive his wrecked machine thru turns one and two to the infield without a stop.

The finish of the Junior Class was just the reverse of last week's action. This week it was Ernie Carlisle picking up the win over Dylon McMahon.  Ernie's fastest lap of 10.739 was comparable to many of the adults fast times in the Stock Class.

MICRO-SPRINT RACE RESULTS - 4/28/07

Keller, Oswald, Andreas, Pollard and McMahon first under the Checkers

The 250cc Stock Feature featured the Kellers of Logan Twp., NJ. Jon took an early lead past pole sitter Bryan Radcliff followed by brother Rich, III and Dad, Rich Jr. The trio stayed close together thru traffic during the 25 lap event to finish 1,2,3 at the checkers. Brian Radcliff and Todd Elwell rounded out the top  five.

Delaware's Jon Holmquist Jr returned to competition in the 600cc Class after a 10 year hiatus driving one of the newest Stallard machines. However, it was Randy Oswald who picked up the winner's purse in the 600cc Feature going wire-to-wire. Sam Locuson, making his first appearance in a 600 car, put plenty of  pressure on Oswald, but just couldn't get close enough to make the pass.

One of the most exciting features of the night was the 270cc Class. Drew Boyce and Ken Andreas had fans on the edge of their seats as they swapped the lead several times thru heavy traffic. At the checkered flag it was Andreas getting the win as Boyce gave up second place to Cameron Merriman in the closing laps.

Ralph Parks was pole sitter for the 125cc Feature. Last week's winner, Barry Pollard moved quickly to second and hounded Parks thru traffic for 21 of the 25 lap feature. However, a slight slip on 22 by Parks opened the door for Pollard to take the lead and his second win of the season.

The youngsters of the Junior Class didn't leave all the battles to the adults. Ernie Carlisle held an early lead followed by last week's winner, Dylon McMahon. McMahon took over the lead on lap 7 and was again the class of the field. Carlisle stayed in second followed by Zach Short , Heather Colbert and Justin DeLong.

AIRPORT SPEEDWAY GEARING UP FOR 27th SEASON

The Speedway lifts the lid on this year's season with what is rapidly becoming an annual event. The Lid Lifter scheduled for Saturday, April 14th kicks off the racing season. A rain date of April 15th has been included. just in case! All racers are invited to participate. Entry information is currently posted on the Airport Speedway web site. Practice days will again precede the event on both March 24 and March 31. A Rookie School will also be held on those days for new drivers.

Site work at the Speedway is continuing through the winter months. Work includes moving and straightening the outside track barriers, changing some track elevations and, if required, adding some additional clay to the existing track surface. Race fans will be treated to a new lap counter and
top four position counter operated through the present electronic scoring system.

The old Pit Shack is being replaced with a completely new one. It will have better access for drivers as they will be pulling a pill for starting positions this year. A roomier interior will provide better work space for workers doing line-ups and payouts.

A new Race Class to be known as the Junior Class will be tried this year. The Class is now accepting young member drivers, ages 12-15 who want to enjoy motorsport competition in an organized way. There must be at least 10 cars present each race night in order for this Class to take the track. Motors will be the same 125cc and 250cc Stock motors used by the Club's regular competitors. However, the Juniors will not be integrated into the regular Airport Classes and they must stay in their Class for one complete race season. Also, the younger Juniors cannot move to any regular Airport Class until age 14. Complete rules and regulations for the Class are currently being formed and will be released in February or early March. The Juniors will also have a Point Fund for year end payouts.

Finally, some special race night events have already been scheduled. June 16th has been designated as Fan Appreciation Night. July 21st, drivers and pit crews will enjoy an Ice Cream Social. September wraps up the year with the Borthwick and Members' Memorials. 2007 is shaping up to be another
banner year at Airport Speedway.
