Mid-Atlantic Championship Series (MACS)
Indiana, PA
November 3, 2006
By: Jeff Geesey
For Immediate Release: Shaver Victorious in Opening Stanza of MACS’ Big Kahuna
VI at “The Rock”
Steve Shaver, Vienna, WV, claimed his career first Mid-Atlantic Championship
Series victory in the opening stanza of the Big Kahuna VI at Rick and Ernie
Jones’, “The Rock” Allegany County Speedway, Cumberland MD.
Despite bone chilling cold temperatures dipping below the freezing mark, Jones’
Oval Track Promotions stayed the course as the track prep crew provided one of
the best surfaces seen at the track this season. This effort resulted in an
exciting event to warm the brave fans who championed the raw conditions.
Jeremy Miller, the hottest driver in the east, and defending MACS Series
Champion, Mike Balzano paced the 26-car field with eventual winner, Shaver
slotted in sixth on the grid. After one false start, Miller and Balzano fired
the field at the cone as they flew into turn one. Miller was on the inside,
Balzano outside in an all out brawl for the lead. Miller came off of turn two on
top with Balzano fighting fiercely, not only the win, but the Championship as
well. Balzano, a mere 40 points behind current MACS points leader Jason Covert,
needed to gain every available point, with every finishing position being worth
5 more points in his quest.
Miller led lap one over Balzano, Covert, Shaver, and Steve Casebolt. As the
field started lap two, Tim Dohm, who had been riding in eighth, slammed hard
into the outside retaining wall after his left front brake froze sending him
careening into the wall.
The top five remained the same for the double file restart with Miller and
Balzano both pacing the field once again. As the field catapulted into turn one,
a mid-pack skirmish started a chain reaction incident that filtered into the
later third of the pack collecting seven cars in turn two. Caught in the tangle
were Greg Fetters; Doug Burkholder; Gary Stuhler; 2005 WRISCO Aluminum ROY
titlist Devin Friese; John Mason; and David Bloss. Burkholder was the only
driver unable to continue though drove off under his own power.
For the final time, Miller and Balzano paced the field for a double file restart
with Covert lurking in third while Shaver and Casebolt completed the top five.
Once again Miller darted into the lead with Covert snaring second from Balzano
as Casebolt relegated Shaver to fifth.
Covert was hot after Miller, but Miller was completely unfazed by the effort.
While every position was being contended throughout the pack, Shaver clawed his
way back to fourth by lap 4.
In a dramatic twist, Miller while leading lap 9 had an upper control arm break
sending him slamming into the outside retaining wall ending his dazzling
performance. Covert, in second, now inherited the lead as he tried to now gain
points on his closest title contender Balzano who was now dead on his heels.
Shaver held down third over Casebolt and Donnie Moran, who was now riding into
the top five after starting ninth.
Covert brought the field back to life with Balzano strongly pressuring him for
the lead and Championship. The battle waged fiercely as Covert and Balzano were
hooked up in an awesome race. Covert lead until lap 20, when he drifted about
2inches high off his line which was all the opening Balzano needed. Balzano
blasted under Covert, but Covert had lost enough momentum that he was shuffled
back to fifth as Shaver, Moran and Casebolt all blew by.
With Balzano now in the lead, he had to fend off the challenges of his home
state rival Shaver; Moran; Casebolt; and Covert. Shaver looked high and low
sizing his options as he tried to thwart Balzano’s effort. The seasoned veteran
Balzano was undaunted by Shaver’s persistent challenges as lap after lap he
matched Shaver’s every move stopping his effort.
Finally, on lap 29, Shaver found the soft-spot he was looking for in Balzano’s
strategy as he wrestled the lead away; but as with what happened to Covert ten
laps earlier, Balzano was freight trained back to fourth as Moran and Casebolt
followed suit.
With Shaver now in command he was being heavily pursued by Moran, Casebolt,
Balzano and Covert. Casebolt blew into second on lap 31 pushing Moran to third.
Shaver successful held Casebolt at bay for the reaming twelve circuits, though
the Richmond, Indiana driver gave it his best effort it fell but just fell
short. Finishing out the balance of the top five were Balzano, who gained 10
points in his fight for the championship; over Donnie Moran, and Covert who
clings to a 30 point margin in his quest for his first MACS crown. The next tier
of five included Rod Conley, from 12th; Rick Aukland, Andy Anderson, from 11th;
Nick Dickson, and Rick Elliott, from 17th.

Shoemaker dominates Western Md. Nationals at The Rock
October 29, 2006
CUMBERLAND, Md. - Mike Shoemaker couldn't have imagined a better situation. He
set the fastest time, won the heat race, started on the pole and led every
lap of the Red Roof Inn Limited Late Model race during the fourth annual Western
Maryland Nationals on Sunday night at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway.
Shoemaker was invulnerable all day long, capping off the night with the $1,250
win in the 50-lap feature. Bob Jay, Tom Warren, Jim DeArmitt, Glenn Elliott and
Scott Caron won the other five feature races in their respective classes.
The program was condensed into one day after rain and high winds forced
rack officials to call off racing on Saturday night. Drivers were still fighting
with wet and uneven track conditions on Sunday.
Shoemaker seemed to have the track figured out. When the green waved, he took
off from Tim Smith Jr. and Randy Burkholder. Only the six cautions and one
red flag slowed down Shoemaker for the rest of the way. The rest of the field
dwindled quickly.
Burkholder, who won the A&C Racing Engines give away earlier, fell out on lap
12. Smith wasn't able to continue following the fuel stop on lap 24. After
Mike Altobelli Jr. took over second, he, too, had to head to the pits after his
hood came loose. With two laps to go, Shoemaker led the competition by a
straightaway.
Travis Calhoun held second until Matt Sponaugle was able to beat him by a nose
for the runner-up spot at the finish line. Ted Gallaher and George Beckett
completed the top five.
Jay took over the race after Dan Zechman suffered an engine problem while
pulling away in the Street Stock feature. Zechman led the first 18 laps and was
in control of the race when his car began smoking come out of turn four.
He coasted into the pit area, leaving Jay with the lead on lap 19.
After Khi Swanger spun on lap 25 while running third, Jay led the field back
under green with Mark Jones and John Whitfield behind. Jones and Whitfield made
contact in turn two one lap later and Jones lost a wheel, ending his chances to
catch Jay.
Jay held off a final lap charge by Bill Heffner to take the checkered flag.
Whitfield ended up third and Scott Whito was fourth. Jones was credited with
fifth.
Warren won the Hobby Stock race for the second-straight year. Warren took the
green flag and led every lap, pulling away from the second-place car of Shawn
Wyles between cautions. Wyles ended up second, 12 car lengths off the lead at
the finish.
Curtis Heath ended up third. Lou Wannyn and Mike Moore completed the top five.
Steve Fadley and Lincoln Ritchey were battling for the fourth spot on lap 17
when both lost wheels coming out of turn four and had to retire.
Caron led the final six laps of the 4-cylinder Small Junk Car race after
starting sixth. He had worked his way up to third when leader Jason Imes
suffered a flat tire coming off of turn four and the second-place car of Michael
Lauffer went high to avoid Imes. Caron drove underneath both cars to get the
lead.
Caron was in control for the remainder of the race and won by a half of a
straightaway over Lauffer and Eric Broadwater. Lauffer and Broadwater got
around Chris Booher on lap six. Booher finished fourth and Dwain Rhodes was
fifth.
Jim DeArmitt lapped the field in the 8-cylinder Large Junk Car race.
Brandie Mills finished second after going a lap down on the final lap. Mel
DeArmitt was third and Tom DeArmitt was fourth.
Glenn Elliott came from the 16th starting position to get the win in the Classic
Cars feature. Elliott came through the field quickly, working his way to third
by lap four. Bill Brown Jr. and Bill Brown Sr. were
running first and second at the time.
Brown Sr. took the lead following a restart on lap seven, and Elliott followed
into second. Kurt Welsh then grabbed the lead from Brown Sr. and Elliott on a
restart on lap 13. Elliott made the winning move by getting around Brown Sr. and
Welsh on the outside when the race restarted following another caution on lap
15. Elliott went on to win by eight car lengths over Welsh and Brown Sr. Jim
Crocker finished third and Brian Diehl completed the top five.
Later, Darryl Winkler drove to victory lane in the non-winners race for the
Classic Cars. Winkler edged out Pete Neal after a side by side battle for the
lead during the final laps.
The Big Kahuna, which was postponed earlier this month, will be held the
following weekend starting with practice on Thursday night, Nov. 2. Two features
for the Pepsi Super Late Models and Mid- Atlantic Championship Series will each
be held on Friday, Nov. 3 and Saturday, Nov. 4.

Troutman wins; Harr becomes champ at The Rock
September 16, 2006
CUMBERLAND, Md. - Back-to-back wins weren't quite enough for Dave Troutman.
Troutman won for the second straight week in the regular season finale
Saturday night at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway. Chris Harr won
the Pepsi Super Late Model track championship over Troutman by finishing third
with a five-point lead in the standings.
Troutman seemed destined for a runner-up finish in the feature also until
race-long leader Bob Salathe's car gave out with three laps remaining. Troutman
won over Jack Pencil. Harr celebrated his second track championship--he
also won in 1996--in victory lane with Troutman.
Others were celebrating too. Matt Emerick scored the first win of his career and
Randy Burkholder won his first track championship in the Red Roof Inn Limited
Late Model division. Tony Daniels won for the first time at The Rock and Travis
Stickley became the new champion in the TC Race Cars Hobby Stocks. John
Whitfield won a wild Street Stock feature with Bob Jay taking the championship.
Jim DeArmitt won the first championship for the new 8-cylinder Junk Cars class
and Paul Gambol was
the feature winner.
Salathe took the lead from Andy Martz at the start of the Super Late Model race
and rode the high line around the track without a hitch until a caution came out
on lap 15. Troutman, who had worked his way up to second by lap eight after
starting seventh, battled with Salathe for three laps but fell back with five
laps remaining. Coming off of turn four on lap 22, Salathe slowed to bring out
the caution and retired.
Pencil, who came from 17th to third, took second from Harr on the restart and
chased after Troutman until the checkered flag. Troutman won by a car length.
Behind Harr in third, Martz was fourth and Wayne Johnson was fifth.
Emerick started on the pole and led all 20 laps of the Limited Late Model race.
He won by a car length over Randy Burkholder. Randy Burkholder came from seventh
to third in just four laps. He passed
Darryl Burkholder for second and battled with Emerick over the last three laps.
Emerick was able to hold off Randy Burkholder's best run on lap 17 when
Burkholder worked his way to the inside. Darryl Burkholder finished third. Al
Shawver and Matt Sponaugle were fourth and fifth.
Whitfield took over the lead after Jay and Jimmy Iser collected each other
on the white flag lap of the Street Stock race. Both were reprimanded to the
rear of the field and Whitfield capitalized. He
picked up his second win of the season by one car length over Shane Molovich.
Jay edged Rodney Mock for third and Buddy Jones was fifth.
Daniels stayed ahead of Marcus VanMeter for all 15 laps of the Hobby Stock
feature. Daniels won by eight car lengths after VanMeter pressured him for
much of the race. Stickley finished third, capping his championship run with
nine regular season wins and 15 top-five finishes in 16 races. Steve Fadley and
Mike Moore completed the top five.
Gambol won for the fourth time by getting the lead from DeArmitt halfway through
the 12-lap Junk Car race. Chad Gambol finished second after passing DeArmitt
with two laps to go. Logan Davis, DeArmitt and Eric Swope completed the top
five.
A demolition derby will be held on Saturday, Sept. 23. The Big Kahuna with the
Mid-Atlantic Championship Series will be held on Oct. 5-7.

D.J. Troutman wins Shultz Memorial at The Rock
August 19, 2006
CUMBERLAND, Md. - D.J. Troutman claimed the Dwane Shultz Memorial race for his
third win of the season in Pepsi Super Late Model action on Saturday night at
The Rock, Allegany County Speedway. He led the entire 25-lap distance while
Wayne Johnson capped off a superb run with the runner-up spot.
In other action, Matt Sponaugle also won for the third time in the Red Roof Inn
Limited Late Models. Travis Stickley won his 10th of the season in the Hobby
Stocks and Bob Jay was in victory lane for the fifth time in the Street Stocks.
Alan Shives finished off the night with his first 8-Cylinder Junk Car win.
D.J. Troutman, who started on the pole, led uncontested over Dave Troutman
through the majority of the race. Three cautions kept Dave Troutman within a
half of a straightaway.
Johnson rallied from the eighth spot in the high groove to get to fifth over
Charlie Schaffer by lap 12 and for fourth over Jeff Miller on lap 15. After the
final caution on lap 17, Johnson passed Rodney Sweitzer for third and set his
sights on the leaders.
While D.J. Troutman was out front by a comfortable margin, Johnson finally
caught Dave Troutman for second with two laps to go and made the pass in turn
two. He finished 11 car lengths behind D.J. Troutman at the finish.
Dave Troutman, Sweitzer, Chris Harr, Doug Burkholder, Miller, Chuck Clise, Shane
Beegle and Schaffer finished third through 10th.
Sponaugle held off Howie Bussard over the last 15 laps in the 20-lap Limited
Late Model race. Sponaugle took the lead from Travis Calhoun after a pair of
cautions in the first two laps.
Bussard moved into second on lap four and chased down Sponaugle, getting side by
side for the lead on and off for the next few laps. Sponaugle prevailed through
the halfway point and Bussard couldn't get by in the last half of the race.
Sponaugle won by three car lengths.
Matt Emerick picked up three spots to finish third. Al Shawver and Travis
Calhoun completed the top five.
Jay, the Street Stock point and wins leader, cautiously passed Rick Wright under
slippery track conditions following intermission five laps into the 16-lap
event. He went on to win by a half of a straightaway over Wright.
Just three cars took the checkered flag. Buddy Jones was the third car across
the line. Travis Kennell was fourth but did not finish. Jimmy Iser Jr. was
credited with fifth after an earlier mishap.
Stickley's tenth Hobby Stock win became memorable after he had to be towed to
victory lane following a collision with runner-up Marcus VanMeter in turn one
after the finish of the 15-lap race.
VanMeter led for five laps, taking over when leader Tony Daniels got a flat tire
in turn four on lap six. Stickley was running in third at the time. VanMeter
held off Stickley until lap 10 when Stickley got to the inside in turn four.
Stickley and VanMeter were nose to tail for much of the final four laps with
Stickley taking the checkered flag with VanMeter close on his bumper. After
passing the finish line, the two cars smashed into each other when Stickley
began to slow down and VanMeter did not.
Reed Stickel Jr. came from the seventh starting spot to get third by the finish.
Steve Fadley and Jacob Hinton finished fourth and fifth.
Shives held off Paul Gambol's bid to win his fourth straight race in the Junk
Cars. Shives got the lead from Jim DeArmitt following a restart on lap seven.
Gambol came from seventh and closed in on the outside to keep the race close
until the finish.
The next event at The Rock will be Sunday, Aug. 27 for the Super and Limited
Late Models and Hobby Stocks. Warm-ups start at 5:30 p.m. and racing begins at 6
p.m.

Burkholder, Shawver, Armstrong win Late Model races at The Rock
July 29, 2006
CUMBERLAND, Md. - Doug Burkholder won the for the second time, cruising through
the final half of the Pepsi Super Late race on Saturday night at The Rock,
Allegany County Speedway.
Tyler Armstrong and Al Shawver split the Twin 15-lap Red Roof Inn Limited Late
Model features. Mike Warrenfeltz emerged as the winner late in the Street Stock
race and Reed Stickel Jr. broke through for his first win in the TC Race
Cars Hobby Stocks.
Burkholder, who started on the pole, fought off Wayne Johnson after the first
lap to take the lead. Chris Harr moved in to second on the next lap and Jack
Pencil moved up to fourth on the third lap behind Burkholder, Harr and Johnson.
Harr was trying to keep pace with Burkholder when his car suffered a mechanical
failure and slowed to bring out the caution. The race resumed with
Burkholder still in command over Pencil while Charlie Schaffer moved into third.
Burkholder held off Pencil through one more caution on lap 17 and won by a
straightaway over Pencil. Schaffer exchanged third with Johnson with four laps
to go. Johnson ended up fourth and Shane Beegle finished fifth after getting
around Brent Smith in the closing laps. Dave Troutman, D.J. Troutman, Smith,
Chuck Clise and Dave Bloss finished sixth through 10th.
Armstrong took the lead from Matt Sponaugle on lap three and led the rest
of the way in the first Limited Late Model feature. Armstrong won by a
straightaway over Matt Emerick, who worked his way up to second over Sponaugle
with four laps to go. Sponaugle then held off Kevin Weyandt for the third spot
and Andy Fries was fifth.
After inverting four spots for the second feature, Armstrong ran into early
trouble when he tangled with Randy Burkholder on the first lap. On the restart,
Sponaugle jumped out to the early lead over polesitter Kevin Weyandt.
Shawver started seventh and climbed to fifth on lap six. His big move came after
a caution for the second-place car of Weyandt. Shawver went to the outside
of Howie Bussard and Emerick to get second on the restart. He stayed on the
outside to pull even with Sponaugle on the next lap and took over the lead in
turn two.
Shawver remained in control the rest of the way for his second win. Sponaugle,
Bussard, Tyler Hershey and Fries completed the top five.
Warrenfeltz won for the fourth time after a race-long battle for the lead
with Jimmy Iser, Bob Jay and Jamey Swank. Iser started on the pole and led Jay
and Warrenfeltz through the first six laps. Jay suffered a flat that forced him
to the pits on lap six and took him out of contention.
Warrenfeltz moved up to second on the restart and tried for several laps to get
by Iser. Iser was holding on through the corners and Swank joined in to make it
a three-car race through the halfway point. Swank shot past
Warrenfeltz in turn three on lap 11, then went side by side with Iser for the
lead on lap 13. Warrenfeltz came back in turn four and drove underneath both
cars to finally get the lead. He went on to win by 12 car lengths. Jay made it
back to second over Swank at the finish. John Whitfield and Iser were fourth and
fifth.
Stickel won for the first time at The Rock, leading all 15 laps of the Hobby
Stock feature. He started on the pole and built a big lead through the first
caution on lap five for oil on the speedway. Nine-time winner Travis Stickley
was running fifth at the time and made a jump to second within the next lap.
Stickel was ready for Stickley following the second and final caution on
lap eight, and pulled away for the victory by 10 car lengths. Stickley as second
and Steve Fadley was third. Jacob Hinton edged Mike Moore for fourth at the
finish line.
The Rock will be off until Saturday, Aug. 19, featuring the Dwane Shultz
Memorial for Super Late Models. Also scheduled are Limited Late Models, Street
and Hobby Stocks and 8-cylinder Junk Cars. Warm-ups are at 6:30 p.m., and racing

Pencil wins Fair Race at The Rock
July 23, 2006
CUMBERLAND, Md. - Jack Pencil led all the way to capture the victory in the
annual Allegany County Fair event on Sunday night at The Rock, Allegany County
Speedway.
Pencil won for the second time, his first since April, in the Pepsi Super Late
Model race. Randy Burkholder was back in victory lane in the Red Roof Inn
Limited Late Model feature while Mark Jones and Travis Stickley won the stock
classes. Paul Gambol and Scott Caron won the junk
classes.
Pencil started on the pole and took off at the green with Bo Feathers following
him to second. Pencil initially pulled away from Feathers, but Feathers regained
ground to within a car length when the first caution came out.
When the race resumed, Feathers closed in again within six laps but fell back
when the final caution came out on lap 19. After two more laps, Feathers was
unable to keep up and Pencil won by 11 car lengths.
Chris Harr moved up from seventh at the start to finish third. D.J. Troutman was
fourth and Andy Anderson got around Gary Stuhler for fifth late in the race.
Stuhler, Dave Troutman, Wayne Johnson, Doug Burkholder and Bob Gordon completed
the top ten.
Burkholder beat Al Shawver to the finish line in the 20-lap Limited Late Model
race after a side-by-side battle for the lead in the final three laps. The win
was Burkholder's fourth.
Burkholder led Justin Kann and Tyler Hershey for most of the race. Shawver, who
started seventh, was up to fourth by lap seven. By lap 17, Burkholder was in
control and navigating through traffic when the
caution came out.
On the restart, Shawver passed Kann and Hershey to get to second in the high
groove in the second turn. He stayed in the high groove around turns three and
four to get to the outside of Burkholder. Burkholder and Shawver raced side by
side through lap 19. Burkholder managed to beat Shawver to the finish line by a
car length. Kann, Matt Emerick and Hershey completed the top five.
Jones, who has nine wins at the Hagerstown Speedway and one earlier at The Rock
this season, won the 16-lap Street Stock race in a close finish by less than a
car length over Bob Jay. Jones led every lap, though Jamey Swank, and later in
the race, Jay were close behind.
Jay made his way through the field after starting seventh. He passed Mike
Warrenfeltz for third on lap 14 and got underneath Swank on the next lap for
second. However, he was unable to get underneath Jones on the final turn.
Swank, Warrenfeltz and John Whitfield completed the top five.
Stickley won the TC Race Cars Hobby Stock event for the ninth time this season
after Tony Quade was disqualified for a technical violation in post-race
inspection.
Quade led the final 10 laps after passing Steve Fadley on lap three. He was 10
car lengths ahead of Stickley at the finish. Stickley edged Fadley, which in
ended up being the winning move, at the end. Tony
Daniels, Lincoln Ritchey and Mike Moore were credited with third through fifth.
Gambol won the 8-cylinder race for the third straight time. He got the lead from
Alan Shives on the backstretch of lap four and won by three-quarters of a
straightaway over Shives, Chad Gambol, Jim DeArmitt and Brandie Mills.
Caron led the entire 4-cylinder race for his second win this season. Caron was
pulling away from Jeremy Swank through the middle of the race. Jim Kennell ended
up second after Swank went up against the wall in turn three on the last lap.
Andy Shaulis, Steve Yokum and Kevin Beers were third through fifth.
Racing continues at The Rock next Saturday with the Super Late Models, Twin 20s
for the Limiteds at $500 to win each, and also the Street and Hobby Stocks.

Harr wins for third time at The Rock
July 8, 2006
CUMBERLAND, Md. - Chris Harr started ninth, dodged spinning cars in front of him
at the start, captured the lead and drove away for his third win on
Saturday night at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway.
Joining Harr with victories in other classes were Al Shawver, Travis Stickley,
Bob Jay and Paul Gambol.
Harr was in the last row when the Pepsi Super Late Model field rolled off the
grid and dodged the first wreck when Charlie Schaffer, the polesitter, spun in
front of the field in the second turn. Doug Burkholder also spun during the
confusion.
On the restart, Wayne Johnson and D.J. Troutman tangled in turn three racing for
the fourth spot to bring out the caution again. Harr moved up two more spots for
the second restart and raced to third when the green came out.
Chuck Clise held off Bob Salathe to take the early lead. Harr took second in
turn three two laps later and followed Clise until lap nine, when he drove to
the inside in the second turn.
Harr went on to win by a straightaway over Clise and Burkholder. Salathe and
Schaffer completed the top five.
Shawver won the Red Roof Inn Limited Late Model race for the first time by
clinging to the lead in the last few laps as Randy Burkholder tried to get by.
Shawver started on the pole and was comfortably leading as Burkholder was
picking his way through the field after starting seventh. Burkholder was fifth
by lap three, took fourth from Robbie Black on lap five and passed Matt Emerick
and Travis Calhoun to get second.
Burkholder closed the gap to Shawver from a straightaway to six car lengths when
the caution came out on lap 18. After the restart,
Burkholder battled side by side in turns one and two with Shawver. The
two made slight contact on the backstretch, Shawver retained the lead
and Burkholder couldn't make another move in the remaining lap.
Black finished third while Calhoun and Emerick completed the top five.
Jay scored his fourth Street Stock win by leading every lap. He started
on the outside pole and went on to win by a half of a straightaway over
Jamey Swank.
Jay was never challenged while out front. Behind him, Swank battled with
Buddy Wilson over the second spot for the final eight laps. Swank held
on to second at the finish with Wilson on his inside. John Whitfield and
Jimmy Iser finished fourth and fifth.
Stickley won for the eighth time, seventh in the regular season, by
taking the lead from Chris Chamberlain and holding off Brandon LaSalle
in the 15-lap TC Race Cars Hobby Stock feature.
Stickley started sixth and drove to the front over Chamberlain and Reed
Stickel Jr. on a restart with one lap complete. After LaSalle and
Chamberlain got together racing for second on lap 10, LaSalle chased
Stickley for the final five laps. Stickley held on for the victory with
LaSalle on his bumper at the finish line.
Stickel lost a tire and had to pit on lap four but made his way back to
third at the finish. Mike Moore and Steve Fadley finished fourth and
fifth.
Gambol won the 8-cylinder Junk Car race for the second straight time,
grabbing the lead from Jim DeArmitt on lap nine. DeArmitt led the race
early as Gambol got the runner-up position on lap seven. Gambol won by
eight car lengths. DeArmitt, Chad Gambol, Jeff Proud and Logan Davis
completed the top five.

Burkholders take victories at The Rock - Allegany Co. Speedway
CUMBERLAND, Md. - Doug Burkholder won the Pepsi Super Late Model race, and
shortly after watching his father take the checkered flag, Randy Burkholder won
the Red Roof Inn Limited Late Model race on Saturday night at The Rock, Allegany
County Speedway.
The victory was the first of the season for Doug Burkholder, who became the
eighth different Pepsi Super Late Model winner. Randy Burkholder's win was his
third of the season.
In other races, Brandon LaSalle put an end to Travis Stickley's five-race win
streak in the TC Race Cars Hobby Stocks. The win was LaSalle's first this
season, as was John Whitfield's victory in the Street Stocks. Bill Brown Sr. won
the Classic Cars race.
Doug Burkholder started on the pole and took the lead when the 25-lap race
began. Behind him, Wayne Johnson held second and Chris Harr moved up to third on
the first lap. Chuck Clise and Bob Salathe were running fourth and fifth.
Burkholder got away from the field early in the race, leading Johnson, Harr and
the others by half of a straightaway through eight laps. During that time, Harr
had closed in on Johnson for second and eventually made the pass on lap nine
entering turn one. Harr was able to track down Burkholder over the next 11 laps,
getting to within a car length on lap 18.
Harr chased Burkholder through two restarts on laps 21 and 23 but wasn't able to
make a move. Burkholder won by six car lengths.
Bob Salathe was able to take the fourth spot after the first caution and traded
third with Wayne Johnson after the second caution. Johnson, Salathe and Clise
finished third through fifth. Dave Troutman, Dave
Bloss, Shane Beegle and Charlie Schaffer rounded out the finishing order.
Randy Burkholder didn't have the luxury of starting on the pole as his father
did, but he made his way to front in short order in the 20-lap Limited race. He
started fifth and avoided a crash in the first turn
involving four cars at the start.
When the race resumed, Burkholder took second from Shawn Claar and closed
in on leader Howie Bussard. Burkholder followed Bussard until lap nine, when he
pulled to the inside coming off of turn four and took the lead.
Burkholder, who leads the championship point standings, went on to win by a half
of a straightaway over Bussard. Kevin Weyandt, who started 10th, finished third.
Matt Emerick and Claar completed the top five.
LaSalle led the final 13 laps of the 15-lap Hobby Stock race, holding off
Stickley for the final four laps in the victory. LaSalle ended Stickley's win
streak, which began on May 20, by a car length at the
finish.
LaSalle took the lead from Reed Stickel Jr. in turn two on the second lap. Steve
Fadley was running third and Stickley, up from seventh, was fourth at the time.
After three straight cautions on lap four, Fadley moved to second on the fifth
lap and Stickley took third on lap six. LaSalle wasn't able to get away from
Fadley or Stickley through the halfway point.
Stickley moved to second on lap 11 over Fadley and followed LaSalle for
the next lap. Stickley tried to find a way around LaSalle on the final two laps,
but was denied as LaSalle kept his car on the bottom.
Fadley, Stickel and Jacob Hinton completed the top five at the finish.
Whitfield won for the first time by leading all 16 laps of the Street
Stock feature. He took the lead from the pole while Jimmy Iser and Bob Jay made
passes up to second and third in the first three laps.
Whitfield led by five car lengths until the first caution on lap eight. Iser
took advantage of a restart one lap later to try to get the lead. He shot
to the inside of Whitfield in turn one but lost control and
spun. Whitfield resumed the lead over Jay but Jay retired on lap 10.
Whitfield won by six car lengths over Travis Kennell and Iser. Jay and Rick
Wright finished fourth and fifth. Brown was in command of the Classic Cars race
for the entire 20-lap distance. Only the caution flags seemed to be able
to slow down Brown. Jamie Lloyd ran second for much of the race with Kurt
Welsh and Jim Crocker behind.
The final caution on lap 17 allowed the field to catch Brown for the restart.
Lloyd, Welsh and Crocker began dicing for the second and third spots while Brown
was pulling away again. Brown crossed the finish line with a half straightaway
lead over Crocker. Lloyd edged Welsh at the finish line for third and Fred
Cullum was fifth.
The next race at The Rock is Saturday, July 8, for round two of the BedRock
Shootout. Warm-ups begin at 6:30 p.m. Heats start at 7 p.m. Super and Limited
Late Models, Street and Hobby Stocks, and 8-cylinder Junk Cars will be
competing. For more information about The Rock, visit

D.J. Troutman wins again at The Rock
June 17, 2006
CUMBERLAND, Md. - D.J. Troutman handled the field for the second time this
season and Travis Stickley won his fifth straight on Saturday night at The Rock,
Allegany County Speedway.
Troutman won the Pepsi Super Late Model race and Kevin Weyandt scored the Red
Roof Inn Limited Late Model win, both by leading every lap. Stickley and Bob Jay
won with passes on the final lap of the TC Race Cars Hobby Stock and Street
Stock races. Jamey Swank led the final five laps of the 4- ylinder race for the
win.
Troutman took off from the outside pole and into the lead over Doug Burkholder
at the start of the 25- lap race. He stayed well ahead of Chris Harr on two
restarts with eight laps to go for the win by a margin of a half straightaway.
Harr took second from Burkholder on lap two, but Troutman was already out to a
10 car length lead. Troutman led Harr by as much as a straightaway before losing
some ground between the 14th and 16th laps.
Back to back cautions on the 17th and 18th laps allowed Harr to keep
Troutman in sight, but Troutman pulled away with five laps to go to seal the
win.
Dave Troutman ended up third, taking the spot away from Burkholder on the lap 18
restart. Burkholder, Jack Pencil, Chuck Clise, Wayne Johnson, Shane Beegle,
Charlie Schaffer and Dave Bloss finished out the top 10.
Weyandt, driving for injured point leader Matt Sponaugle in the No. 8 car,
nearly lost the lead to a charging Randy Burkholder on lap nine. Weyandt
led from the start over Shawn Claar and Al Shawver.
Burkholder was on the move by lap six and passed Shawver and Claar by lap eight.
He appeared to have the advantage on Weyandt going into turn four on lap nine
when his wheel broke away, sending him spinning and also causing Claar to spin.
Weyandt avoided the spin and was never
challenged again, leading Howie Bussard to the finish line by a half
straightaway. The win was Weyandt's second this season.
Bussard scored his best finish of the season in the runner-up spot. Shawver,
Claar and Matt Emerick completed the top five.
Stickley kept his win streak alive, dicing with Lincoln Ritchey for the
last five laps of the 15-lap feature. Stickley started seventh and had to work
his way to the front while Ritchey led the race after starting
on the outside pole.
Nine laps into the race, Stickley made it to second over Shawn Wyles,
George Beckett, Brandon LaSalle and Reed Stickel Jr. On the next lap, he drove
to the inside of Ritchey for the lead. The two cars remained side by
side-Ritchey on the outside and Stickley inside-each time around.
Ritchey was ahead at the finish line through lap 12, then Stickley pushed
ahead on the inside to lead lap 13.
Stickley emerged with the lead on the final lap on the back straightaway and
came around to take the checkered flag. Ritchey beat Wyles to the finish line by
a bumper for second. LaSalle and Phil Wilhelm completed the top five.
The victory was Stickley's sixth in the regular season and seventh overall at
The Rock in 2006. He has never finished worse than second.
Jay won for the third time in the 16-lap Street Stock feature, taking the lead
from Daniel Cornman in the first turn of the final lap. Jay then held off
Cornman's final charge in the fourth turn to take the
victory by four car lengths.
Cornman had led the race from the start while Jay started seventh. Rick
Wright moved up to second ahead of Jimmy Iser, Jay, Travis Kennell and Buddy
Wilson two laps into the race.
Jay got by Wright for second on lap seven and chased Cornman for the next eight
laps. Jay went inside of Cornman and grabbed the lead after taking the white
flag. Cornman, Wright, Wilson and John Whitfield completed the top five.
Swank came to the front of the 4-Cylinder field halfway through the 10-lap
feature after starting eighth. Scott Caron took the lead after the first lap
while Swank was up to second by lap three. Swank grabbed
the lead from Caron on lap five but Caron and Ron Roach Jr. touched while racing
for second, bringing out the caution for Roach before the lap was complete.
Caron resumed the lead.
Swank wasted no time on the restart to take back the lead, taking to the high
side in turn one. He went on to win by a half of a straightaway over Caron. Jim
Kennell finished third. Eric Broadwater and Kevin Beers finished fourth and
fifth.
Warm-ups begin at 6:30 p.m. and heats start at 7 p.m. for the next event at The
Rock on Saturday, June 24. Super and Limited Late Models, Street and Hobby
Stocks, and Classic Cars will be competing. For more information about The Rock,

Stuhler ties record for wins at The Rock
June 11, 2006
CUMBERLAND, Md. - Gary Stuhler tied the record for the most feature wins
all-time at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway on Sunday night.
Stuhler, the 2003 track champion at The Rock, tied two-time champion Bob
Salathe's record for feature wins with his first regular season victory this
season at The Rock. Stuhler won the Mid-Atlantic Championship Series event back
in April, and became the seventh different regular-season winner by passing
Scott Haus at the halfway point of the 25-lap Pepsi Super Late Model feature.
Mark Jones won the first race of the Street Stock Tri-Track Championship and
Travis Stickley continued his dominance of the TC Race Cars Hobby Stock division
with his third straight victory. Paul Gambol won for the first time in the
8-cylinder Junk Car race.
Stuhler started fifth and captured the fourth spot on the initial start. Haus,
Jack Pencil and Scott Rhodes settled into the top three positions. After a
caution on lap two, Stuhler took third away from Rhodes.
Haus was pulling away from Pencil and Stuhler by lap 11. Stuhler had chased down
Pencil for the second spot. Under caution, Pencil's car stopped on the track
with a mechanical problem, giving the second spot
to Stuhler for the restart.
Stuhler needed just two more laps to get by Haus. He took the inside line on
Haus on the backstretch and shot by coming out of turn four on lap 13. Stuhler
drove away from the field over the final half of the
race, beating Bo Feathers to conclusion of the race by a straightaway.
Feathers passed Haus after a restart following a delay to cleanup oil on the
track. Haus ended up third with Rhodes finishing fourth and Chris Harr taking
fifth. Doug Burkholder, Wayne Johnson, Brent Smith, Chuck Clise and Charlie
Schaffer completed the top 10.
Jones made it to the lead with five laps left in the 20-lap Street Stock
feature. Jones had to fight to the front after starting 10th.
Mike Warrenfeltz started on the pole and led Bob Jay and Donnie Kenney Jr.
around for the first lap. Six cautions helped keep the field close through the
first half of the race.
With Warrenfeltz and Jay out front, the rest of the top five shuffled several
times. Jimmy Iser, Terry Carlyle, Kenney, Ashley Barrett and Mike Bennett all
took turns in the top five. Bennett worked his way up to third by lap four and
Jones followed into fourth by lap seven. Jones took third from Bennett on lap
10.
Problems for Warrenfeltz took him out of the running on lap 13. Jay assumed the
lead with Jones in second for the restart. Jones pressured Jay for the next lap
and got to the inside of Jay in turn two on lap 14. The two raced
side by side to the third turn where Jones took control of the race. He went on
to win by a half of a straightaway over Jay, Bennett, Dan Zechman and Barrett.
Stickley took over the lead for the remainder of the race on lap seven from
Marcus VanMeter in the TC Race Cars Hobby Stock feature. Stickley started
seventh and raced his way to second by the fifth lap. At that point, VanMeter
had a sizeable lead but a caution on lap six brought the field back together.
VanMeter and Stickley raced side by side for most of the next two laps. A
caution stopped Stickley from taking the lead on lap seven. Stickley beat
VanMeter back to the starting line on lap eight as the caution came out again.
VanMeter lasted just one more lap before slowing on the speedway and retiring
from the race.
Stickley won by one car length over Reed Stickel Jr. Stickel passed Mike Moore
for second with five laps remaining. Chris Chamberlain, Brandon LaSalle and
Moore completed the top five.
Gambol chased down R.C. Horn and Kevin Cooke in the first three laps to get the
lead and won by 10 car lengths over Horn in the 12-lap Junk Car race.
Cooke led the first three laps as Horn and Gambol closed in. Gambol went to the
high side around Horn and Cooke in turn two on the third lap. Horn, Cooke,
Jim DeArmitt and Chad Gambol completed the top five.
Racing continues at The Rock this Saturday, June 17. Warm-ups begin at 6:30 p.m.
Heats start at 7 p.m. Super and Limited Late Models, Street and Hobby Stocks,
and 4-cylinder Junk Cars will be competing.

Harr first to repeat at The Rock
June 3, 2006
CUMBERLAND, Md. - Chris Harr became the first driver to return to victory lane
in the Pepsi Super Late Model division, winning for the second time this season
on Saturday night at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway.
Other winners included Matt Sponaugle, who was in control for the entire race to
win again in the Red Roof Inn Limited Late Models, and Travis Stickley, who won
for the third straight time in the TC Race Cars Hobby Stocks. Bob Jay won for
the second time in the Street Stocks and Eric Broadwater won for the first
time in the 4-cylinder Junk Car race.
Harr started on the pole and dominated the 25-lap Pepsi Super Late Model race.
He led by as much as a straightaway over runner-up Dave Troutman before a last
lap crash gave Troutman a chance to stay close at the finish. Harr wound up
winning by four car lengths over Troutman. Harr had several big
leads throughout the race only to see cautions slow the pace down. Jack Pencil
briefly captured the second spot from Troutman and chased Harr for two
laps. Pencil retired from the race on lap nine.
Harr was leading by two seconds over Troutman with one lap to go when Shane
Beegle, who was having his best run this season holding the fourth position,
appeared to cut a tire that sent his car careening into the outside wall on the
frontstretch. Beegle's car rolled off the wall on its roof but he escaped
injury in the crash. A delay under the red flag followed and the race resumed
for one lap with Harr out front.
Behind Harr and Troutman, Chuck Clise raced to a third-place finish. He took the
third spot from Beegle on lap 16. Charlie Schaffer finished fourth and Doug
Burkholder was fifth. Coleby Frye, Wayne Johnson, Greg Fetters, Beegle and Dave
Bloss completed the top 10.
Sponaugle overcame a scrape with a lapped car and was able to continue for the
victory in the 20-lap Red Roof Inn Limited Late Model race over Randy
Burkholder. Sponaugle led the entire race.
Burkholder grabbed second on lap 10 but still trailed Sponaugle by a half of a
straightaway when Sponaugle was hit in the right rear as he was attempting to
lap Nathan LaSalle. Sponaugle's car received only minor damage and he
resumed the lead for the restart.
Two more cautions kept Burkholder close, including the final one with two laps
to go. Sponaugle won by four car lengths. Al Shawver, Darryl Burkholder and
Kevin Weyandt completed the top five.
Jay battled with John Whitfield to capture the 16-lap Street Stock
feature. Whitfield was in command of the race from the pole while Jay passed
Mike Warrenfeltz to get to second on lap 11 and challenge for the lead.
Two laps later, Jay and Whitfield touched racing side by side for the lead,
sending Whitfield for a spin on the backstretch. Though the caution came out,
Whitfield kept his car moving and was not penalized to the rear of the field. He
resumed the lead over Jay with Warrenfeltz and Daniel Cornman close behind.
Jay nearly had the lead again on lap 14 when the caution came out to slow the
field again. With one lap to go, Jay finally completed the pass, driving inside
of Whitfield coming off of the fourth turn. Cornman edged Whitfield on the last
lap for the runner-up spot at the finish. Whitfield, Warrenfeltz and
Travis Kennell finished third through fifth.
Stickley's third straight win appeared as effortless as ever as he moved quickly
to the front from the seventh starting spot and grabbed the lead from Marcus
VanMeter on a lap six restart.
VanMeter worked his way to the front and into the lead over Shawn Wyles by the
third lap. Stickley was running third at the time and also moved ahead of Wyles
three laps later just before the caution came out.
On the restart, Stickley drove on the outside of VanMeter in turn two and pulled
ahead in turn three.
Wyles recaptured second from VanMeter on a lap nine restart but Stickley drove
away and left the rest of the field a half of a straightaway behind at the
finish. Wyles beat out VanMeter at the finish line for
second. Tony Quade was fourth and Steve Fadley beat out Brandon LaSalle at the
finish for fifth.
Broadwater led the final seven laps of the 10-lap 4-cylinder Junk Car race in
the win. Broadwater, who had finished second in the previous two races, took the
lead from Jim Kennell on the high side coming out of turn four.
He won by a half of a straightaway over Kennell at the conclusion. Kevin
Beers, Scott Caron and Ray Shepherd rounded out the top five.
The Rock will switch to Sunday evening for its next race on June 11. The first
leg of the Tri-Track Championship for Street Stocks plus Super Late Models,
Hobby Stocks and 8-cylinder Junk Cars are scheduled. Warm-ups begin at
5:30 p.m. Heats start at 6 p.m. For more information about The Rock, visit

D.J. Troutman becomes sixth winner at The Rock
May 27, 2006
CUMBERLAND, Md. - D.J. Troutman became the sixth winner in as many races, taking
the Pepsi Super Late Model victory on Saturday night at The Rock, Allegany
County Speedway.
In the special 25-lap TC Race Cars Hobby Stock race, Travis Stickley won for the
second straight time. Kevin Weyandt, Jimmy Iser Jr. and Brian Shaffer were each
in victory lane for the first time this season in other divisional races.
D.J. Troutman started on the pole and beat Dave Troutman out of corners on the
start to secure the lead with Chris Shuey, Chuck Clise and Charlie Schaffer
running third through fifth.
D.J. Troutman escaped a potential problem early when his hood dislodged.
Track officials removed it for safety considerations during an unrelated
caution on lap four and he retained his starting spot.
After the caution, the D.J. and Dave Troutman continued to set the pace while
last week's winner, Chris Harr, made several moves into the top five after
starting ninth. Harr captured fourth on lap five, and after the second
caution of the race on lap eight, grabbed third away from Shuey in turn two.
D.J. Troutman continued to pull away in the second half of the race, leading
Dave Troutman by nearly a straightaway until the final caution brought the field
back together on lap 17. D.J. Troutman went on to win by two seconds over Dave
Troutman.
Harr, Shuey and Clise completed the top five. Schaffer, Greg Fetters, Wayne
Johnson, Doug Burkholder and Shane Beegle finished sixth through 10th.
The 25-lap TC Race Cars Hobby Stock race got off to a rough start with Mandy Jay
and Mike Moore crashing on the backstretch. Jay's car climbed the wall and
rolled over once, bringing out the red flag.
Brandon LaSalle led the field back under green with Lincoln Ritchey and Stickley
following. Marcus VanMeter joined the top four on lap three as Stickley and
Ritchey raced side by side behind LaSalle.
Stickley drove inside of LaSalle on the next lap and continued side by side for
most of the next lap. Stickley motored ahead in turn two for the lead and began
to pull away.
A caution on lap 11 gave Ritchey the chance to pass LaSalle on the restart, and
VanMeter moved up to third two laps later.
Stickley led VanMeter, who moved to second with five laps remaining, to the
finish by four car lengths. Ritchey and LaSalle ended up third and fourth. Reed
Stickel Jr. finished fifth.
Weyandt won the 20-lap Red Roof Inn Limited Late Model race by holding off Matt
Sponaugle for the final six laps. Weyandt left from the pole with the lead over
Matt Emerick and Tyler Hershey for the first quarter of the race.
Sponaugle started fifth and came into contention with passes for the third spot
on lap seven and the second spot on lap 13. He closed in on Weyandt and tried
for the lead with two laps to go.
Sponaugle drove to the inside of Weyandt in turn one, only to fall behind on the
backstretch. He tried again in turn three and failed to make the pass stick.
Weyandt didn't allow the bottom lane to open again and won by four car lengths.
Emerick, Randy Burkholder and Hershey completed the top five.
In the 16-lap Street Stock race, Iser started on the pole and led every lap,
clinging to the lead over Bob Jay and Daniel Cornman at the finish.
With Iser out front, Jay made his way to second in the first four laps
while Cornman took third on lap six. Two cautions kept Jay and Cornman
within striking distance of Iser.
Jay tried the high side on Iser with two laps to go and Iser kept his car on the
bottom to stay ahead. Iser beat Jay and Cornman to the finish line by two car
lengths. Travis Kennell and John Whitfield finished
fourth and fifth.
Shaffer scored the 8-Cylinder Junk Car win over two-time winner Jim DeArmitt by
two car lengths in the12-lap feature. Chad Gambol, Alan Lowery II and Rel
Breedlove finished third through fifth.
Racing continues at The Rock on Saturday, June 3. Warm-ups begin at 6:30 p.m.
