Charlie George celebrates his birthday by winning the Forest Festival 50 at the Elkins Speedway

By Bob Reed

Kerens, WV. 10/1/2006. Charlie George, Elkins led the final 35 laps of the Forest Festival 50 for his first ever Forest Festival win and his first Budweiser LM win of the 2006 season at the Elkins Speedway. The win was worth $2000 to George.

At the drop of the green outside polesitter Shawn Poling got the jump on polesitter George and led the first 15 laps by as much as a half straight until coming off turn 4 on the 16th lap his engine let go and he slowly coasted to the pits. On the restart George who had been running second assumed the point followed by Chuck Harper, Jarrod Hawkins, Tim Senic, Booper Bare, Dusty Hamrick, Joe Loudin, John Over, John Ward, Robbie Scott, Steve Booth, Jim Pyles, Richard Frazier and Chris Coomer.

Over the next 35 laps George was challenged several times by Harper and by Hawkins. These two put on a battle royale for 2nd and 3rd. Harper would run 2nd for several laps and get up to George and look like he was going to make a run for the lead and then would either go off the back straight or jump the cushion in turn 4 and lose 2nd to Hawkins. Hawkins would then get up close to George but about this time here would come Harper and George would extend his lead. Harper would work Hawkins for a few laps and then get by for 2nd and close the gap on George. This happened 4 or 5 times. On lap 42 Harper dropped back to 4th when both Hawkins and Bare got by him as he jumped the cushion in turn 4 and almost collected the front straight wall. Harper running the extreme top worked his way back and on the final lap passed Hawkins for 2nd. Harper closed up on George but it was too late.

The other mover was Scott who stopped on the track on lap 11 and brought out a caution. He returned on the tail and when the green flew immediately began advancing through the field. By lap 17 he was in 10th and on lap 28 moved to 5th where he finished.

At the checkered the top 10 was George, Harper, Hawkins, Bare, Scott, Frazier (with his best run of the season), Senic, Booth, Over and John Ward. Earlier Scott, Hamrick and Senic won heats.

Notes: George’s #98 Pontiac LM is a MasterSBilt Chassis powered by a Chevrolet Engine. Sponsors are Super Car Wash, Rich Mountain Surveying, Elkins Truck Service and Charlie’s Auto.

Notes: Today October 1st was Charlie George’s birthday so this was quite a birthday present to himself.

Notes: George has had engine problems all year and didn’t race a whole lot. In fact this engine blew up at the Hillbilly as they were taking it off the hauler. His mechanic told me that they had dumped a gallon of super glue down in the carburetor to hold it together for tonight. He said that they really needed this win and the money that went with it.

Notes: Eighteen cars started the feature with 11 running after 50 laps. 9 cautions slowed the action. Hard Charger was Bare who started 14th (after breaking a rear suspension while leading his heat) and finished 4th, a gain of 10 spots.

Notes: New cars were the K2 of John Over and the 83 of Chris Coomer

In J&M Grafix SL action Brad Harris from the pole led all 20 laps for his 3rd feature win of the 2006 season. Harris never really had a challenge as he comfortably led the distance.

For the first 3 laps Michael Jackson held 2nd until he spun and brought out a caution. Phil Jeffries then took up the chase but only for 2 laps as 7th starting Jim McCloud got by. He and Jeffries then exchanged the lead a couple times until Jeffries almost spun in turn 2 on lap 16. Jeffries then dropped to the tail and in turn 4 almost spun again. This time he just pulled to the infield and watched the rest of the race. McCloud held off Jacob Hawkins for 2nd over the final 4 laps.

At the checkered Harris had a nice lead over McCloud with Hawkins close behind and then a few car lengths back to Tracy Cooper and Jackson from the tail. Harris and Jackson won the heats.

Notes: 11 cars started the feature with 9 running after 20 laps. 4 yellows and 1 red slowed the action. Hard Charger was Jim McCloud who started 7th and finished 2nd, a gain of 5 spots.

Notes: New cars were the J4 of Phil Jeffries and the 17 of Rusty Ball.

Notes: During this feature one of the track officials had a very bad accident. On a lap 13 stoppage of action Denzil “Snuffy” Pritt was pushing the car of Donnie Lewis to restart it. The pushbar of Snuffy’s ATV caught in the rear spoiler of the Lewis car and when Lewis’s car started it jerked the ATV violently. Snuffy was tossed off and landed on the track. The ATV then dug into the track, bounced into the air and landed on top of Snuffy.

The EMTs and Firemen were immediately on the scene and stabilized him. They transported Snuffy to the hospital in Elkins.

Word was received back that he was sitting up and joking with the nurses but was going to be air lifted to either Pittsburgh or Morgantown.

One of the track officials stopped and spoke with him and he was in good spirits. He did recognize the person. Snuffy may have a fractured skull. He has blood behind his right eye and the hospital staff wanted to send him to a facility with a neurological team.

In Miller’s Used Car AMRA Modified action old timer Deck Defibaugh showed everyone that he can still wheel a race car as he led all 15 laps from the outside pole for the win. Deck was driving the car normally driven by son Jason.

Polesitter Louie Krushansky pressed him for the first 13 laps until he messed up and Darren Glover took 2nd . At the checkered Deck led Glover, Krushansky, Clifton Cochran and Paul Wilmoth Jr. Heats to Krushansky and Defibaugh.

Notes: 15 cars started the feature with all 15 still running after 15 laps. Only 1 caution on lap 3 slowed the action. Hard Charger was Kevin Doyle who started14th and finished 10th, a gain of 4 spots.

Notes: New cars tonight were #66 Matt Cosner and #31 Mike Murphy. Murphy just recently purchased a modified and this was his first race. Andre Layfield was out for the first time this year. Paul Wilmoth was also in a new car designed and built by Jerry Haselau and Rick Strickler. They were using this race to work out the bugs as they are planning on running the car at the DTWC.

A first time ever winner in Elkins Builders Supply/Guardian Fiberglass PS action was Dusty Swecker as he led all 12 laps from the pole. Swecker held off a hard charging Johnny Singleton for the entire distance as Singleton challenged him on almost every lap but Swecker was equal to the challenge. Ninth starting Randy Bohan worked his way to 3rd by lap 6 and got close but could never challenge the two leaders for position. At the checkered Swecker was followed closely by Singleton and Bohan with 13th starting Mike Duritsky 4th and 21st starting Tom Newman 5th. Heats to Swecker, Singleton and Kevin Collins.

Notes: 25 cars in the pits with 24 starting the feature. After 12 laps 15 were still running. Only 3 cautions slowed the action. Hard charger was Newman who started 21st and finished 5th, a gain of 16 spots.

Notes: New cars were Tim Ferguson #F4, Kevin Collins #84, Tom Newman #38, Bo Karwatske #32, Singleton #J15, Mike Duritsky #90 and Bob Nelson #99.

In Leslie Equipment Co 4 Cyl Action Terry Conrad won his 14th feature of the year as he led all 12 laps from the outside pole to best Ronnie Cooper, Dave Summers, Tom Simpson and Jeff Pennington. Heats to Cooper and Conrad.

Notes: 13 cars started the feature with 10 running after 12 laps. Only 2 cautions. Hard charger was Tom Simpson who started 11th and finished 4th, a gain of 7 spots.

Notes: Dave Summers and Dave Gabbert were out in matching cars for the first time this year. Summers was in Gabbert’s 2005 car while Gabbert had a new car. Also Tom Simpson was driving the #9 which is usually driven by Chris Waugh. Jeff Pennington was out for the first time this year driving the #5 of Arlie Sigley. Mike Lewis showed up with a new car. Seems they bought a new chassis and put all of their running gear from the old car into this one. It was even painted bright Tangerine and was nicely lettered.

Garrett Paugh finely tied his dad’s record of 7 feature wins in a year when he won this week’s Broughton’s Sports & Trophy World Mini Wedge feature over Lindsey Smarr, Lexi Howell, Megan Davis and Kaylee Yokum. Smarr won the heat.

Notes: Dad Neal Paugh won his 7 features in the LM division also at the Elkins Speedway.

This was the last scheduled race at the Elkins Speedway for 2006. See you in 2007. For further information check our website @www.elkinsmotorspeedway.com.

Chuck Harper wins 4th LM Feature of the year at the Elkins Speedway

By Bob Reed

Kerens, WV. 8/25/2006. Chuck Harper, Beverly, WV clinched the 2006 Elkins Speedway Budweiser LM Points Championship in style with his 4th feature win of the year on Friday night.

Harper said after the race: “We started out slow but after Stevie’s tires went away we finished strong.” He also commented about his championship: “This is my first championship since I won the MACS title in 2003. We didn’t start out to get this one but since we stayed near home all year we got it and it is a bonus.”

Harper won the first heat to earn the pole for the feature but lost the lead at the drop of the green to 2nd heat winner and outside polesitter Steve Wilmoth. Wilmoth opened up leads of 5 to 6 car lengths over the first 17 laps but Harper hounded him constantly. Finally on lap 17 Wilmoth who was running the high groove got extra high in turn 3 & 4 and Harper buzzed by on the bottom. Harper immediately opened up a half straight lead and over the final 9 laps was never really challenged for the lead.

Wilmoth whose tires were fading badly had his hands full with Butch McGill who got up beside him several times in the final laps but each time Wilmoth pulled him down the straight and maintained second.

Gary Dalton was the big mover as he almost spun in his heat while challenging Richard Frazier for the lead, finished 5th and started 10th in the feature. By lap 7 Dalton quickly moved to 5th behind Shawn Poling. He and Poling then carried on quite a battle through the checkered with Poling holding him off.

Richard Frazier had a good run going until he and Tim Senic tangled on lap 5 coming off turn 2. Frazier then stopped on the track on lap 21 and went pitside.

At the checkered Harper led Wilmoth by a half straight with McGill 3rd, Poling 4th and Dalton 5th. Heats to Harper and Wilmoth.

Notes: Harper’s #00H Rocket is powered by Pro-Power built Chevrolet and is sponsored by J-Rods Vending, Rick Sturms Motorsports, Melvin’s Automatic Transmissions, Leslie Equipment Co, Triple H Construction and Hoosier.

Notes: 13 cars started the feature with 9 running after 25 laps. 5 Cautions slowed the action. Dalton was the hard charger by gaining 5 spots from 10th to 5th.

Jacob Hawkins, Fairmont, WV won his 3rd J&M Grafix SL feature of the year by leading all 20 laps. On the first attempt at a start polesitter Dusty Hamrick led outside polesitter Jim McCloud but a spin in turn 1 by Brad Harris which collected Robert Radcliff and Kelly Cooper brought out a yellow. With these 3 now on the tail Hamrick again got the jump on McCloud and looked to lead the first lap but both he and McCloud almost spun in turn 4. This allowed 4th starting Hawkins, 3rd starting John Tallman and 6th starting Kevin Keene to slip beween them and take first, second and third. The first lap after this almost wreck was Hawkins, Tallman, Kevin Keene, Hamrick, Brad Harris and McCloud. Hawkins and Tallman were now fighting for the lead with Hawkins holding the upper hand and maintaining the lead. On lap 14 while lapping cars Keene got tangled with Cooper and Nick Corley and which sent him to the tail. Then on lap 16 in traffic while running 4th Hamrick’s #55 erupted in steam and stopped on the back straight. Everyone missed him but Hamrick was done for the night.

At the checkered Hawkins led Tallman with Brad Harris several lengths back in 3rd with McCloud 4th and Keene from the tail 5th. Hats to Hamrick and McCloud.

Notes: Tallman with his 2nd place finish clinched the 2006 J&M Grafix Seasons Points Championship for SL.

Notes: 10 cars started the feature with only 7 running after 20 laps. Only 3 cautions slowed the action. Hard charger was Hawkins who started 4th and won, a gain of 3 spots.

Notes: Dusty Hamrick who has been running LM, changed engines over the week. This was a test as Paul Wilmoth is scheduled to drive the car at Tyler in the Hillbilly 50 for Steel Block LM next Friday.

Brent Trimble, Grafton, WV, driving the ‘Throwin Dirt’ House Car won his 2nd Miller’s Used Cars AMRA Modified feature of the year by leading all 15 laps. Trimble got the jump on polesitter Tom Sigler who chased him the entire 15 laps.

At the checkered Trimble led Sigler, Darren Glover, Sam Henderson and Delmas Whiteman. Heats to Sigler and Trimble.

Notes: 2nd place finisher Sigler had clinched the 2006 Miller’s Used Cars AMRA Modified Season Championship prior to running the feature.

Notes: 11 cars started the feature with only 7 running after 15 laps. 8 cautions slowed the action at times to a crawl. Hard charger was Whiteman who started 11th and finished 5th, a gain of 6 spots.

Anthony Arbogast won his 7th Elkins Builders Supply/Guardian Fiberglass PS feature of the year and clinched the 2006 points championship by leading every lap for the win.

On the first 2 attempts at a start outside polesitter Frank Wine got the jump on polesitter Arbogast but each time a spin negated the start. Finally on the 3rd attempt at a clean start Arbogast got the jump on Wine and never looked back. For the first 5 laps Wine held onto 2nd but on lap 6 he spun with help in turn 4 and was sent to the tail. Kris Southern took up the chase but even though he was never more than 2 or 3 cars lengths behind Arbogast he never challenged for the lead. At the checkered Arbogast led Southern, Pat Frazier, Rusty Ball and Anthony Cacace. Heats to Anthony Arbogast and Wine.

Notes: 24 cars in the pits with 23 starting the feature. Only Randy Bohan failed to make the call. 15 were running at the checkered. Hard charger was Anthony Cacace who started 17th and finished 5th, a gain of 12 spots.

Terry Conrad got back on the winning track with his 13th Leslie Equipment Co 4 Cyl win of the 2006 season. Needless to say with 13 wins in 15 races Terry is the 4 Cyl season points champion.

From the pole Conrad led all 12 laps to win over Dave Mullenax, Arlie Sigley, Tommy Simpson and Mike Lewis. Heats to Conrad and Dave Mullenax.

Notes: 14 cars started the feature with 10 running after 12 laps. Only 2 cautions. Hard Charger was Kenny Rowback who started 14th and finished 9th, a gain of 5 spots.

Notes: Mike Lewis was out for the first time this year. When I was joking with him about it they said: “We moved it to mow the grass and since it ran we decided to bring it to the race track.” The car looked like they hadn’t touched it since last year.

Lindsay Smarr won her first Broughton’s Sports & Trophy World Mini Wedge feature of the year as she led every lap and won by a wide margin over last week’s winner Garrett Paugh, Zak Kimbrew, Ryan Watson and Megan Davis. Paugh won the heat.

Garrett Paugh was the 2006 Mini Wedge Season Points Champion.

This was the last regular season race at the Elkins Speedway. The next scheduled race is the Forest Festival 50 for Budweiser LM paying $2000 to the winner on Saturday Sept 30th. Regular racing in all other classes. Gates open at 4PM with racing at 7PM.

Paul Wilmoth Jr wins first LM feature of the year at the Elkins Speedway

By Bob Reed

Kerens, WV. 8/18/2006. From the outside pole position Paul Wilmoth Jr, ‘The Gambler’, Clarksburg, WV led all 25 laps of the Budweiser LM feature for his first 2006 win at the Elkins Speedway.

Wilmoth stated after the race: “I think we have finally figured out all of our problems and hope that with all the big races coming up that we will run this good in them.”

Wilmoth started on the pole of the 2nd heat and led all 10 laps to earn the outside pole of the feature. At the drop of the green for the feature he powered around polesitter Dusty Hamrick and led going away. At the checkered he held almost a straight lead over Hamrick while Hamrick had a few car lengths on Tim Senic, Gary Dalton and Butch McGill.

Wilmoth’s only close call came on lap 17 as he lapped Steve Booth. As Wilmoth went to go around Booth on the top going down the back straight Booth unexpectedly came up the track and Wilmoth was forced off the track. Two wheels went over the edge of the track but he came back on without any damage and continued on.

Fourth starting Senic got by 3rd starting Holbert on the start and this is where he finished. Last week’s winner Dalton started 5th and jumped to 4th on lap 2 and began challenging Senic for 3rd but Senic held him off the entire distance. Sixth starting McGill followed Dalton around Holbert on lap 4 and was in the mix with Senic and Dalton most of the rest of the way but never gained a spot. Eighth starting Chuck Harper moved past 7th starting Jarrod Hawkins on the start and finally got by Holbert for 6th on lap 21. Steve Wilmoth was right behind all of this action but never could pass any of them even though he was right there several times. All the action was between these cars as Wilmoth and 2nd place Hamrick were not challenged.

Heats to Hamrick and Wilmoth Jr.

Notes: Wilmoth’s Rocket #B1 is owned by Gary Midcap and is sponsored by Adkins Timber Products, M&H Trucking, Midcap Land & Timber, NAPA Auto Parts, Rocket Chassis and Integra Shocks.

Notes: 16 cars in the pits with 14 starting the feature. 12 were running after 25 laps. Only 2 cautions slowed the action. Hard charger was Richard Frazier who started 13th and finished 10th, a gain of 3 spots.

Notes: Robbie Scott’s car shut off while running 4th in the 1st heat and his crew could never figure out the problem so they loaded up before the feature.

Jim McCloud won his first J&M Grafix SL feature of the year as he led all 20 laps from the outside pole.

On the first attempt at a start Eric Hudkins, Billy Brown and Robert Radcliff all spun in turn 2. On the 2nd attempt at a start Tom Harris lost a right front tire on his car on the front straight and was towed off. Jacob Hawkins went to the pits on this caution but returned on the rear. On the 3rd start McCloud powered around the top of polesitter Brad Harris and never looked back. Only three more cautions (on lap 10 for Eric Hudkins, on lap 18 for Billy Brown and Radcliff and on lap 18 when Brad Harris spun Hawkins in turn 4) slowed McCloud as he crossed the line with a 4 or 5 car length lead over Kevin Keene who was holding off John Tallman, Tracy Sampson and Brad Harris who had to come from the tail after being sent to the tail on lap 18. Heats to B. Harris and McCloud.

Notes: 11 cars started the feature with 7 running after 20 laps. 6 cautions (with 3 on the first lap) slowed the action. Hard charger was Radcliff who started 9th and finished 6th, a gain of 3 spots.

Notes: Mike Jackson hit a tire on the inside of turn 1 and barrel rolled his car in the air once during hot laps. Mike was unhurt and mostly sheet metal damage was done to the #4M. With help from his crew and a few others the car was fixed and Jackson started the feature.

Notes: Tom Harris is now driving the #3 which has been driven by Mike Sturm and Kenny Vest. Last week Harris took the engine from his modified and put it in the #3.

Dave Defibaugh won his 3rd Miller’s Used Car’s AMRA Modified Feature of the year by leading every lap for the win. Because of the time limit, the race only lasted 8 laps. The checkered flew along with the 5th caution on lap 8.

Last week’s winner Jason Defibaugh was involved in two of the cautions with one being serious when he spun at the end of the front straight and went into the area near the caution light near where the ambulance and fire trucks are parked. He was pulled out and continued after considerable delay. When he spun Jason was running 2nd in a group with Dave Defibaugh, Louie Krushansky and Brent Trimble. There wasn’t enough green laps to do much racing but Dave Defibaugh was the class of the field with Krushansky nipping at his heels all the time. When the checkered flew Dave Defibaugh led Krushansky, Trimble, Darren Glover and Donnie Nething. Heats to D. Defibaugh and Trimble.

Notes: 14 cars in the pits with 13 starting the feature. 12 were running at the checkered. 5 cautions. Hard Charger was Delmas Whiteman who started 12th and finished 8th, a gain of 4 spots.

Notes: Darren Glover and Donnie Nething made their first appearances of the year.

Anthony Arbogast won his 6th Elkins Builders Supply/Guardian Insulation PS feature of the year by leading every lap from the pole. This feature also ran over the time limit and only ran 10 laps.

Three cautions on the first lap plus with the number of cars needing towed and the time used to realign the field the race ran over the time limit. Arbogast from the pole got the jump on outside polesitter Kris Southern and held off Southern for the first 5 laps and the 3rd starting Frank Wine the final 5. At the checkered Arbogast led Wine, Southern, 17th starting Lynn Moore and last week’s winner Rusty Ball. Heats to Arbogast, Southern and Wine.

Notes: 25 cars in the pits with 24 starting the feature. Only 15 were running after 10 laps. Hard charger was Lynn Moore who started 17th and finished 4th, a gain of 13 spots.

Ronnie Cooper, Sandyville, WV won the regularly scheduled Leslie Equipment Co 4 Cyl feature when newcomer Steve Cruse, who had taken the checkered in first, was disqualified for being to light at the scales. Cruse started 11th in the field and on lap 3 passed polesitter Terry Styers and ran away. Cruse led by a straight when the 13th starting Cooper finally passed Tom Simpson for 2nd on lap 8. Cooper closed some of the gap but finished 2nd with Tom Simpson 3rd, Kenny Rowback 4th and Styers hanging on for 5th. The order was then changed moving Chris Waugh to 5th. Heats to Terry Conrad and Styers.

Notes: 18 cars in the pits with 17 starting the feature. 16 were running after 12 laps. Only 3 cautions slowed the action. Only Conrad, who came out, ran the pace lap and then pulled off with engine problems failed to run the entire distance. Hard Charger was Cooper who started 13th and won, a gain of 12 spots.

Notes: This win by Cooper broke the winning streak of Terry Conrad at 12.

Cooper also won the make-up feature from July 28th. Since he had won a heat that night he started on the pole alongside Mike Murphy and led all 12 laps for his 2nd Leslie Equipment Co 4 Cyl feature win of the night. Murphy held on for 2nd followed by Rowback, Tom Simpson and Waugh.

Notes: 12 cars started the feature with 11 running after 12 laps. Only 1 caution slowed the action. Hard charger was Michael Cromer who started 12th and finished 8th, a gain of 4 spots.

Garrett Paugh won his 6th Broughton’s Sports & Trophy World Mini Wedge Feature of the year by besting Lindsey Smarr, last week’s winner Zak Kimbrew, Ryan Watson and Megan Davis.

Notes: Garrett with this win tied his dad’s record of 6 wins in a year at the Elkins Speedway. Neal won 6 features one year in LM in the nineties.

Notes: Scott Webley was out for the first time ever. This was the first time that he had ever been in a Mini Wedge.

Next Friday night Aug 25th is the final regularly scheduled points race at the Elkins Speedway for 2006. The only other race after next week is the Forsest Festival 50 on Sept 30th paying $2000 for Budweiser LM with regular racing in all other classes.

Chuck Harper wins 3rd feature of the year at the Elkins Speedway

By Bob Reed

Kerens, WV. 7/28/2006. Chuck Harper, Beverly, WV led all 25 laps of the Budweiser LM Feature at the Elkins Speedway for his 3d win of the 2006 season.

Harper said in the winner’s circle: “The only thing I did to the car from the heat to the feature was change a gear to make it go faster down the straight’s.”

Harper started outside pole of the first heat, led all ten laps for the win, started on the pole of the feature and never looked back. Outside polesitter Tim Senic and 3rd starting Billy Holbert chased him the entire distance but could never challenge for the lead. Fifth starting Steve Wilmoth got into 4th on lap 2 but could advance not further. Tenth starting Gary Dalton steadily worked his way toward the front and passed Butch McGill for 5th on lap 14 but that was where he finished.

At the checkered Harper led Senic, Holbert, Wilmoth and Dalton. Heats to Harper and Senic.

Notes: Harpers #00H is a CJ Rayburn chassis powered by a Pro-Power built Chevrolet. Sponsors are J-Rods Vending, Rick Sturm Motorsports, Melvin’s Automatic Transmissions, Leslie Equipment Co, Triple H Construction and Hoosier

Notes: 14 cars started the feature with all 13 running at the checkered. Only 3 cautions slowed the action. Hard Charger was Dalton who advanced 5 spots from 10th to 5th.

In J&M Grafix SL action John Tallman from the outside pole also led the entire distance for his 3rd win of the year at the Elkins Speedway. This was Tallman’s 2nd win in a row.

Tallman and teammate Billy Beachler led the field to the green with Tallman getting the jump and leading all 20 laps. Brad Harris crossed the line 3rd with Kevin Keene 4th and Tracy Sampson 5th. Heats to Beachler and Tallman.

Notes: Tallman broke a shock with 5 laps to go but with his lead managed to hold off Beachler even though a caution came out on lap 17 which caused him some concern.

Notes: Tallman’s #37 Cropper powered Lazer Chassis is owned by Tommy Pennington and is sponsored by Shag’s Lumber, Swecker Engineering, Pizza Hut, Elkin’s Shop’N’Save, Miller’s Used Cars and Butch’s Place.

Notes: 11 cars in the pits tonight with only 9 starting the feature. 8 were running after 20 laps. Only 3 cautions. Hard Charger was Keene who gained 2 spots from 6th to 4th. Jim McCloud has his #5M renumbered 4M tonight, ran the heat but had mechanical problems and didn’t come out for the feature.

“Lucky Louie” Krushansky, Morgantown from the pole also led all 15 laps of the Miller’s Used Cars AMRA modified feature for his 5th win of the year. Outside polesitter Tom Sigler chased him for the first 6 laps until Jason Definbaugh got by and took up the chase but Krushansky was not to be overtaken. At the finish Krushansky led Defibaugh, Sigler, Sparky Davison and newcomer Cody Giles. Heats to Krushansky and Sigler.

Notes: Krushansky’s #23 is sponsored by Dalton Brother’s Lumber Co, Dairy Delite, Bulldog Logging, Tax Tech and Jack’s Auto.

Notes: This was Wine’s first ever feature win.

Notes: 20 cars in the pits with 18 starting the feature and only 11 still running after 6 laps. Hard Charger was Tim Moore (driving Randy Arbogast’s #112) who started 18th and finished 6th, a gain of 12 spots.

Butch McGill wins 2nd Budweiser LM feature of the year at the Elkins Speedway

By Bob Reed

Kerens, WV. 7/14/2006. From the pole Butch McGill, West Union led all 25 laps of the Budweiser Late Model Feature for his second win of the year at the Elkins Speedway.

McGill said: “The track was really smooth. I knew that they would get it right and finally did. It was slick but tacky tonight and smooth. Give me a smooth track anytime!”

McGill started on the pole of the first heat and led all ten laps to earn the pole for the feature. Then in the feature he led the entire distance to win by over a straight over last week’s winner Gary Dalton. While McGill seemed to be in cruise control all of the action was in the middle of the field. Dalton who started 7th in an 8 car heat and got to 2d on lap 7 where he finished to winner Joe Loudin and Loudin carried on a battle royale from lap 1 through lap 19 when Dalton finally worked under Loudin coming off turn 4 and made the pass coming to the stripe. By this time McGill had over a straight lead and Dalton could not cut into it over the final 6 laps. Also while Dalton and Loudin were fighting for 2nd Richard Frazier in 4th with his finest run of the year was waiting for either one to make a mistake which never happened.

While the all this was going on Dusty Hamrick, Tim Senic, Steve Wilmoth, Shawn Poling, Billy Holbert and Chuck Harper were side-by-side and nose-to-tail on every lap with positions changing almost every turn. Jared Hawkins was also in this mix up through lap 17 when he abruptly pulled out.

All this action was non-stop as only one caution for the spinning Skip Hare on lap 3 slowed the action.

At the checkered McGill led Dalton by over a straight with Dalton several car lengths over Loudin who was trailed closely by Frazier with Dusty Hamrick in 5th. McGill and Loudin won the heats.

Notes: 15 cars in the pits with 14 starting the feature. 13 were running after 25 laps. Only Hawkins pulled out and Charlie George who had engine problems while running 2nd in his heat failed to start.

Notes: McGill’s #1MC Taurus is Ford powered and is a Rocket chassis. It is owned by Leggett Motorsports and sponsors are Jenkins Ford, Mitchell Drilling, KFC Weston/Elkins/Buckhannon, NAPA Auto & Truck Parts, West Union, Poske’s Performance Parts, Lee Phillips Enterprises, Triple Supply and Hoosier.

Notes: Dwayne Moreland is now the driver of the #69 previously driven by John Ward. Donnie Dotson was back this week as he now has his engine repaired. Donnie told me tbat everything he has is for sale.

Notes: Last Tuesday Butch McGill fell getting out of a truck and broke his left leg and has a sprained ankle. He is on crutches and needs help getting in and out of the car. After his heat win I asked him how the leg felt and he said: “Fine, as long as I don’t get into any trouble and have to jam on the brakes or I don’t hit anything.” I said well, “You’re in the right position in the feature” and I was right as he didn’t have to do either. This is the first time I have ever seen a winner of a LM feature do the interview and pictures on crutches.

John Tallman won his 2nd J&M Grafix SL feature of the year and first since opening night when he passed leader Brad Hudson on lap 13 and led the final 7 laps for the win.

At the drop of the green polesitter Kevin Keene took the lead but immediately Mike Jackson, Brad Harris and Mike Sturm tangled in turn 2 stopping the action. Jackson was the only one who could not continue.

On the next start Keene again took the lead followed by outside polesitter Jacob Hawkins, Hudson, Jim McCloud and Tallman. Tallman got by McCloud for 4th on lap 4 while the top 3 remained the same through lap 7. Then while working lap 8 coming off turn 2 Keene lost it and came down in front of Hawkins taking them both into the infield. The resulting caution put both cars on the tail with Hudson now the leader.

Hudson held off Tallman through lap13 when Tallman got under him in turns 3 & 4 and made the pass for the lead. Tallman then increased his lead to a comfortable margin at the finish. Keene ended up getting lapped as his car went from bad to worse while Hawkins could only get back to 6th. At the finish Tallman led Hudson, Tracy Sampson, Brad Harris and McCloud. Heats to Keene and Hawkins.

Notes: 12 cars in the pits with 11 starting the feature. 9 were running after 20 laps. Only 2 cautions slowed the action. Hard charger was Tracy Sampson who started 11th and finished 3rd, a gain of 8 positions.

Notes: Jimmy McCloud was out for the first time this year. He blew a motor practice day and had not run all year.

Notes: Tallman’s #37 Cropper powered Lazer Chassis is owned by Tommy Pennington and is sponsored by Shag’s Lumber, Swecker Engineering, Pizza Hut, Elkin’s Shop’N’Save, Miller’s Used Cars and Butch’s Place.

Brent Trimble, Grafton, driving the ‘Throwin Dirt’ House Car won his first Miller’s Used Cars AMRA modified feature of the year by leading all 15 laps from the pole. Trimble started outside pole of the first heat and led all 8 laps to earn the pole for the feature. He then took the lead and easily held off Cliff Cochran for the win. Trimble led Cochran, Scott Harper, Deck Defibaugh and Tom Sigler at the finish. Heats to Trimble and Cochran.

Notes: 13 cars in the pits with 12 starting the feature. 10 cars were running after 15 laps. 5 cautions slowed the action. Hard charger was Kevin Putnam who started 12th and finished 6th, a gain of 6 spots. Only Tom Harris failed to make the feature. In hot laps Harris broke a right rear suspension part and couldn’t get a replacement in time.

Notes: Scott Harper was at Elkins for the first time this year. Kevin Doyle from Ohio (Originally from Elkins.) was back for the 2nd time this year. He came to the “Throwin Dirt’ shop to get parts and stayed to race.

Anthony Arbogast won his 5th Elkins Builders Supply/Guardian Fiberglass PS Feature of the year and 2nd in a row by leading all 12 laps from the pole. Arbogast outraced Kris Southern and Frank Wine who trailed him the entire distance. Randy Bohan ended up 4th with Ricky Vest 5th. Chad Green who had to start scratch on the field after having trouble in his heat finished a strong 6th even after bring out a caution on lap10 and again going to the tail. Heats to Southern and Anthony Arbogast.

Notes: 17 cars started the feature with 12 running after 12 laps. 7 cautions slowed the action. Hard charger was Green who started 17th and finished 6th, a gain of 11 spots.

Terry Conrad continued his unbeaten streak with his 10th Leslie Equipment Co 4 Cyl Feature win of the season. This week was the 4 Cyl Special worth $300 to the winner. Conrad’s engine began sounding sour over the last half of the race and Mike Murphy closed to his rear bumper on the final lap but Conrad hung on for the win. Dave Mullenax was 3rd with Chris Waugh 4th and Tom Simpson 5th. Heats to Tom Simpson and Larry Hoover.

Notes: 11 cars started the feature with 9 running after 20 laps. Only 1 caution on lap 1 slowed the action. Hard Charger was Conrad who started 10th and won, a gain of 9 spots.
Daniel and Josh Simpson were on vacation so their dad’s Tom and Mike were driving their cars this week.

Garrett Paugh won his 4th Broughton’s Trophy & Sports Mini Wedge feature of the year and 3rd in a row by leading every lap for the win. This week Lindsay Smarr was 2nd with Megan Davis 3rd, Zak Kimbrew 4th and Austin Friel 5th. Paugh also won the heat.

NEXT WEEK NO RACING AT THE ELKINS SPEEDWAY!!

The following week, July 28th, is Autograph night so bring your pens, pencils or markers and something to write on to get the autograph of your favorite driver.

Gary Dalton wins 3rd Leg of WV State Championship Series at the Elkins Speedway

By Bob Reed

Kerens, WV. 7/7/2006. Gary Dalton, Morgantown won the 3rd leg of the WV State Championship Series Friday night at the Elkins Speedway when he passed leader Steve Wilmoth on lap 25 and led the final 10 laps to collect the $2000 winners prize.

Dalton who qualified only 6th quickest, won the 2nd heat and then started 6th in the feature methodically worked his way towards the front lap after lap until a caution on lap 20 put him on Wilmoth’s rear bumper. Dalton was under Wilmoth in every turn on every lap until making the pass on lap 25. Dalton held off Robbie Scott over the final 10 laps to gain the win.

On the first attempt at a start Steve Booth and Shawn Poling got together in turn 1 and had to be pulled apart by track personnel. Both cars continued. On the second attempt at a start before the flag even came out the leaders slowed and a chain reaction back in the field caused several fender-benders with Chuck Harper and Billy Brown receiving the worst. Harper spun to miss another car and Brown slid into him. Brown’s #54 ended up sitting on top of the frontend of Harper’s #00H. Harper was towed off while Brown continued.

When the green flew the next time outside polesitter and 2nd quick qualifier Steve Wilmoth took the lead from polesitter Robbie Scott with quick qualifier Charlie George 3rd, 3rd starting Mike Benedum 4th and 7th starting Dalton 5th. Dalton got by George for 3rd on lap 9 and at the same time 7th starting Jarrod Hawkins got by Benedum for 5th. At lap 10 the top 10 was Steve Wilmoth, Scott with Dalton a few car lengths back in 3rd, followed by Hawkins, Benedum, 13th starting Butch McGill, Dusty Hamrick, Billie Holbert, Paul Wilmoth and Shawn Poling.

The running order remained this way until lap 16 when Scott got trapped behind the lapped car of John Ward and before he could get straightened out both Dalton and George went by dropping him to 4th. On lap 20 another yellow flew bunching the field. While under yellow George was pushed to the pits ending his fine run. Dalton and Scott were now on the rear bumper of Steve Wilmoth with Jarrod Hawkins 4th, Benedum 5th and McGill up to 6th.

Dalton immediately began working underneath Wilmoth on every turn of every lap while Scott was trying to find a way to get by Dalton. These three opened a gap over 4th place Hawkins and the rest of the field. Dalton finally got a good run coming off turn 2 on lap 25 and passed Wilmoth on the back straight for the lead. The next lap Scott dropped Wilmoth another position to 3rd.

Over the final 10 laps Scott chased Dalton but was never able to get close enough to make a serious attempt at a pass. McGill got by Benedum for 5th on lap 29 and Steve Wilmoth on lap 30 for 4th where he finished.

Lots of action in the middle of the field. 6th starting Paul Wilmoth while running 6th on lap 3 went off the back straight and dropped back to 10th. He fought his way back to 7th at the finish even though he went off the top and lost positions a couple other times. 16th starting Billy Holbert raced with Wilmoth for a long time and fought his way to a good 8th place finish.

At the checkered Dalton led Scott, Jarrod Hawkins, McGill and Steve Wilmoth. Heats to Paul Wilmoth and Dalton while Scott won the Dash.

Notes: Dalton’s #87 Doll Brothers owned Rocket is Chevrolet powered and is sponsored by Hall’s Welding Supply, Appalachian Lumber Products and Mid-Atlantic Oil & Gas.

Notes: This is Dalton’s first WV State Championship Series win of 2006 but his 3d win of the year at the Elkins Speedway. Dalton has won the last 2 weeks in a row.

Notes: Only 19 of the 22 cars took time with Charlie George the quickest @ 14.782. 22 cars started the feature with 12 cars running after 35 laps. 8 cautions slowed the action. McGill was the Hard Charger as he started 13th and finished 4th, a gain of 9 spots.

Notes: Chuck Howdershelt was out for the first time in several years with a brand new Rocket.

Notes: Chuck Harper had a night that he wants to forget. In hot laps he lost a driveshaft. Then on his warm-up lap to qualify he lost another drive-shaft. To top it all off he started last in his heat and was terrible finishing 5th out of 8 cars. Then in the feature he didn’t get in a lap when he was involved in a wreck not of his doing and was towed off.

Louie Krushansky, Morgantown in one of his few appearances a the Elkins Speedway won his 3rd Miller’s Used Car AMRA Modified feature of the year.

Lucky Louie finished 2d behind Brent Trimble in his heat and was scheduled to start 3rd in the feature but because of 2 wrecks before 1 lap was completed, one which eliminated outside polesitter Tom Sigler when he and Trimble got together, Krushansky started on the outside pole for the 3rd attempt at a start. Krushansky took full advantage and led all 15 laps for the win. Trimble chased him the entire distance.

Both Jason Defibaugh and uncle Dave Defibaugh were involved one of the 1st lap wrecks and came from the tail to finish 4th and 5th while Kevin Putnam finished 5th. Heats to Trimble and Sigler.

Notes: 13 cars started the feature with 8 running after 15 laps. Only 3 cautions (with 2 on the start) slowed the action. Hard Charger was Jason Defibaugh as he started 9th and finished 3d, a gain of 6 positions.

From the pole Anthony Arbogast won his 4th Elkins Builders Supply/Guardian Fiberglass PS feature of the year by leading all 12 laps for the win. 4th starting Chad Green got to 2nd on lap 2 closed the gap slightly but never got close enough to make a pass. Kris Southern finished 3d with Frank Wine 4th and Lynn Moore 5th. Heats to Anthony Arbogast, Randy Arbogast and Southern.

Notes: 22 cars in the pits tonight with only 19 starting the feature. 11 were running after 12 laps. Only 1 caution on lap 1 slowed the action. Hard Charger was Nelson Bise who started 18th and finished 9th, a gain of 9 spots.

Notes: The only new car tonight was the “00” of Donnie Wamsley.

Notes: Randy Arbogast won his first ever heat when he won the 2nd heat.

Terry Conrad won his 9th Leslie Equipment Co 4 Cyl feature in a row to remain undefeated for 2006. Outside polesitter Mike Murphy chased him the entire distance but could never get close enough to attempt a pass. At the checkered Conrad led Murphy, Dave Mullenax, Chris Waugh and Arlie Sigley. Heats to Conrad and Murphy.

Notes: 14 cars in the pits with 13 starting the feature. All 13 were running after 12 laps. Only 1 caution slowed the action. Hard Charger was Waugh who came from 7th to 4th, a gain of 3 spots. Sigler also gained 3 spots from 8th to 5th.

In Broughton’s Sports & Trophy World Mini Wedge action Garrett Paugh won his 2nd in a row and 3rd feature of the year by besting Lindsey Smarr, Brandon Fluharty, Ryan Watson and Megan Davis. Paugh also won the heat.

Next Friday night July 14th at the Elkins Speedway is a 20 lap 4 Cyl special sponsored by Leslie Equipment Co. paying $250 to the winner. Gary Dalton wins the LM feature and Mike Benedum wins the Elkins Inter-Mountain 35 for SL at the Elkins Speedway

By Bob Reed

Kerens, WV. 6/30/2006. Gary Dalton driving the Doll Brothers #87 Chevrolet powered Rocket led all 25 laps of the Budweiser LM feature for his 2nd win of the 2006 season at the Elkins Speedway.

From the outside pole of the first heat Dalton led all ten laps to earn the win and the pole. Then from the pole in the feature Dalton jumped to an immediate lead and led all 25 laps. As in the heat Jarrod Hawkins made Dalton earn the victory. Midway in the race when Dalton caught the rear of the field and began lapping cars Hawkins closed the gap. Hawkins stuck his nose under Dalton several times until Dalton cleared the traffic and again increased his lead but over the final dozen laps Hawkins was a serious contender.

Dalton said after the race: “I saw Hawkins stick his nose in there when I was in lapped traffic so I decided that I had better get going.” He also said: “That young boy is going to be quite a racer, in fact he already is!”

When the green flew Dalton got the jump on outside polesitter Dusty Hamrick, Hawkins, Billie Holbert and Tim Senic. These five stay this way almost the entire distance until Senic got by Holbert on lap 18 and Hamrick on lap 24. Eighth starting Butch McGill, who started last in his heat and only advanced to 4th, got up to 6th while 9th starting Chuck Harper advanced only to 8th. At the checkered Dalton led Hawkins, Senic, Hamrick and Holbert. Heats to Dalton and Hamrick.

Notes: Dalton’s #87 Rocket is sponsored by Hall’s Welding Supply, Appalachian Lumber Products and Mid-Atlantic Oil & Gas.

Notes: 16 cars started the feature with 14 running after 25 laps. Only 3 cautions slowed the action with none in the final 15 laps. Hard Charger was Steve Booth who advanced 4 spots from 16th to 12th.

Notes: On one lap during the race the WV State Police with their radar timed Dalton at 83 MPH.

Mike Benedum driving the Eric Hudkins owned #8 Rocket led all 35 laps of the Inter-Mountain 35 for J&M Grafix SLs. Fourth quick qualifier Benedum won the dash, started on the pole and then led the entire distance for his 2nd SL win of the year at the Elkins Speedway.

When the green flew Benedum took the lead followed by 3rd starting Sonny Conley, outside polesitter Jason Hawkins, 4th starting Ron Parrish and 5th starting John Tallman. On lap 2 Kevin Keene got by Tallman for 5th. The top five remained in this order until lap 19 when Hawkins retired with right rear damage. The top five was now Benedum, Conley, Parrish, Keene and Brad Hudson.

On lap 22 Keene and Hudson got together bringing out another caution and sending both to the tail but with only 8 cars still running this was no handicap. Now Billy Brown was 4th with Mike Jackson 5th. Hudson came back to pass Jackson but Keene retired on lap 27. At the checkered Benedum led Conley, Parrish, Brown and Hudson. Heats to Tallman and Keene while Benedum won the dash. Conley was the quick qualifier @ 15.742.

Notes: The #8 driven by Benedum is a Rocket chassis and is sponsored by Timber Management LLC, AFP Inc and Driftwood Auto Sales.

Notes: 14 cars took time and started the feature with only 6 running after 35 laps. Hard Charger was Mike Jackson who started13th and finished 6th, a gain of 7 spots.

Notes: Sonny Conley and Ron Parrish driving Steve Cook’s #11 were at Elkins for the first time this year.

Dave Defibaugh, after not winning all year, has now won the last two Miller’s Used Cars AMRA Modified Features. This week Defibaugh led all 15 laps from the outside pole for the win.

At the drop of the green polesitter Brent Trimble looked to have the jump but coming off turn 2 and going down the back straight Defibaugh took the lead which he never gave up. Trimble and 3rd starting Phil Jeffries chased him the entire distance. Sixth starting Louie Krushansky on the final lap passed Tom Sigler for 4th. Sigler ended up 5th. Heats to Trimble and Defibaugh.

Notes: 13 cars started the feature with 10 running after 15 laps. 6 cautions slowed the action. Hard Charger was Sam Henderson who started 12th and finished 8th, a gain of 4 spots. Cliff Cochran was out for the first time this year.

Chad Green won his 3rd Elkins Builder’s Supply/Guardian Fiberglass PS feature of the year by leading all 12 laps.

This win didn’t come easy as Anthony Arbogast who got to 2nd on lap 2 chased him over the final 11 laps but could never make a pass even though he was close several times. At the checkered Green nipped Arbogast by less that a car length with Dusty Swecker 3rd, polesitter Rusty Ball 4th and Lynn Moore 5th. Heats to Ball and Green.

Notes: 15 cars started the feature with 12 running after 12 laps. Only one (1) caution on lap 5 slowed the action. Hard Charger was Randy Thornhill who started 12th and finished 8th, a gain of 4 spots.

Notes: Mark Moore’s #72M is now green. He destroyed his red car a couple weeks ago and bought the former #34 and installed his running gear.

Terry Conrad remained undefeated in Leslie Equipment Co 4 Cyl action by leading all 12 laps for his 8th consecutive win of the year. Conrad started on the pole when first heat winner Kenny Rowback failed to make the line-up and was sent to the tail. Conrad then led every lap with newcomer Ronnie Cooper in chase. Conrad won comfortably over Cooper with Dave Mullenax 3rd, Mike Murphy 4th and Daniel Simpson 5th. Heats to Rowback and Conrad.

Notes: 14 cars started the feature with 11 running after 12 laps. Only 2 cautions slowed the action. Hard Charger was Josh Simpson who started 13th and finished 9th, a gain of 4 spots.

Notes: One new car was John Caldwell who purchased Don Pifer’s #27 championship car from 2005. Don’t look for this car at Elkins too much as Caldwell races at I-77 and just came up to get the car this week.

After another tight battle with Zak Kimbrew and Megan Davis, Garrett Paugh won his 2nd Broughton’s Sports & Trophy World Mini Wedge Feature of the year. This week Davis was 2nd followed by Kimbrew, Lindsey Smarr and Ryan Watson. Paugh also won the heat.

Notes: Brett Benedum finished 2nd in the heat and on the first lap of the feature hit the front straight wall and severely bent the front of his racer which ended his night. Brett was unhurt.

Next Friday night July 7th at the Elkins Speedway is the 4th leg of the WV State Championship Series for Budweiser LM paying $2000 to the winner. Racing in all other classes except NO SEMI LATES!! Hill is only $12 with pits $27. Gates open at 5PM with racing at 8PM. For further information check our website @ www.elkinsmotorspeedway.com

Robbie Scott wins the 6th Annual Chuck Gear Memorial at the Elkins Speedway

By Bob Reed

Kerens, WV. 6/24/2006. Robbie Scott, Shinnston, passed leader Butch McGill on lap 25 and led the final 52 laps to win the 6th Annual Chuck Gear Memorial at the Elkins Speedway.

Scott said after the race: “I want to dedicate this race to Chuck Gear.” He also said: “After I got by Bare the car really started working and was good the entire distance.”

At the drop of the green outside polesitter McGill got the jump on polesitter Bare with the 3rd starting Scott in 3rd, 4th starting Paul Wilmoth in 4th and 5th starting Dusty Hamrick 5th. On lap 2 Mike Benedum passed Hamrick for 5th. These five ran this way through lap 9 when Scott got under Bare coming off turn 4 and passed him on the front straight for 2nd. He then began closing on leader McGill. During this time 10th starting Tim Dohm was on the move as he was in 6th by lap 6 while 17th starting Steve Wilmoth had advanced to 9th by lap 6.

McGill held off Scott through lap 25 when Scott surprised him and moved to the high side and buzzed by on the top in turns 1 & 2 and took off. Scott soon opened up a straight lead and was pulling away. Then on lap 28 Bare used the same move that Scott had used got by McGill in turns 1 & 2 on the top and began chasing Scott. Bare opened up some distance between himself and McGill but made little progress catching Scott until Scott ran off the back straight near the middle of the race and Bare moved a little closer. By lap 60 Bare using lapped traffic had caught Scott and got up under the leader in the turns several times but this ended on lap 67 when the final caution flew for a Tim Senic spin in turn 2. This gave Scott a clear track on the restart and Bare never came close over the final 10 laps.

While Bare and Scott were up to a half track in front of the rest of the field 3rd place McGill and 4th place Paul Wilmoth had quite a battle from around lap 30 to the finish. Wilmoth worked McGill almost every lap but could never get by. At times Mike Benedum also joined the fray and at the end Tim Dohm stuck his nose in several times trying to get by but neither succeeded. Dohm did get by Benedum on lap 68 while Steve Wilmoth got up to 7th on lap 12 and could advance no further over the final 60 laps.

At the checkered Scott led Bare by 4 or 5 car lengths while McGill, Wilmoth, Dohm, and Benedum were almost a straight back in 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th. Heats to Dusty Hamrick, Benedum and Tim Senic while Bare won the dash. Paul Wilmoth was quick qualifier @15.644.

Notes: 23 cars started the feature with 14 running after 77 laps. Donnie Lewis could not start the feature as he had engine problems and pulled out of his heat. 10 cautions slowed the action. 24 cars took times with Paul Wilmoth the quickest @ 15.644. Hard Charger was Steve Wilmoth who advanced 10 spots from 17th to finish 7th.

Notes: Booper Bare and Doug Horton were at Elkins for the first time this year.

Notes: This was Scott’s 2nd straight and 3rd win of the year at the Elkins Speedway. Scott is on a tear lately. He has one 2nd place and 2 wins in the last 3 weeks at Elkins plus he won last weekend at the Tyler Co Speedway.

Notes: Scott’s Blue,White & Green #18 Rocket LM is powered by a Stanton Dodge engine and is sponsored by Amos Paving, Shuck Construction Co, Stanton Racing Engines, Hoosier Racing Tires, Walt’s Inc, Rocket Chassis and Banshee Motorsports Designs & Decals.

Jacob Hawkins, Fairmont, won his first every J&M Grafix SL feature at the Elkins Speedway. Hawkin passed leader Billy Brown on lap 16 and drove away to win by a large margin.

At the drop of the green polesitter John Tallman took the lead followed by Brown, Hawkins, Brad Harris and Kevin Keene. Harris who looked to have the fastest car began running down the leaders and on lap 7 attempted to pass Tallman in turn 1 & 2. The two made contact, hooked together and stopped on the track. Both continued but Tallman lost fuel pressure before the restart and was pushed off.

On the restart Brown who was now the leader took off followed by Hawkins. Brown held off Hawkins and Keene until lap 16 when he made a slight bobble in turn 4 and Hawkins got by and never looked back. On the last lap Keene also got by Brown. Harris who went to the tail came back and was running 4th on lap 16 when he almost spun coming off turn 2 and lost several positions. At the checkered Hawkins comfortably led Keene, Brown, Michael Jackson and Robert Radcliff. Heats to Tallman and Brown.

Notes: 10 cars started the feature with 7 running after 20 laps. 6 cautions slowed the action. Hard charger was Robert Radcliff who started 10th and finished 5th, a gain of 5 spots.

In Miller’s Used Cars AMRA Modified Action Dave Defibaugh led all 15 laps for his first win of the year at the Elkins Speedway.

Defibaugh said after the race that he has been fighting this new car all year and tonight they tried some new things that finally worked.

On the first try at a start polesitter Tom Sigler and Kevin Doyle brought out the first caution. This the put Defibaugh on the front row for the next start and he took full advantage. Defibaugh took the lead which he never relinquished. Phil Jeffries chased him the entire distance but was never able to challenge for the lead. At the checkered Defibaugh led Jeffries, last week’s winner Jacob Hawkins, Sigler (back from the tail) and Sparky Davidson. Heats to Sigler and Jeffries.

Notes: 12 cars in the pits with 11 starting the feature. 7 were running after 15 laps. Hard charger was Sparky Davidson who gained 6 spots from 11th to 5th.

Notes: Tom Marlette and Chuck Woodrum were out for the first time tonight. One new car was the D4 of Kevin Doyle. Understand he is a local Elkins product who now lives in Ohio and came back to visit.

A familiar face in the Elkins Builders Supply/Guardian Fiberglass PS victory as Anthony Arbogast won his 3d of the year. This time Arbogast led all 12 laps for the win.

From the outside pole Arbogast took the lead followed by Zac Bohan. These two ran nose to tail the entire distance while Kris Southern and last week’s winner Chad Green fought there way from the back to 3rd and 4th at the finish. Lynn Moore started and finished 5th. Heats to Bohan and Arbogast.

Notes: Only 17 cars in the pits tonight. 15 started the feature with 13 running after 12 laps. 8 cautions slowed the action. Hard charger was Southern as he came from 8th to 3rd, a gain of 5 spots. Green also gained 5 spots from 9th to 4th.

Notes: Looks like Donnie Lewis has sold the 12L as Ben Ebeling is now listed as the driver.

Terry Conrad continued his mastery of the Leslie Equipment Co 4 Cyl class with his 7th straight win of the year. This week Terry made it interesting as he started on the rear of the feature even though he won his heat. By lap 4 he was in 2d and on lap 6 passed leader Mike Murphy and never looked back. Dave Mullenax held on for 2d followed by Arlie Sigley, Chris Waugh and Daniel Simpson. Heats to Conrad and Mullenax.

Notes: 15 cars started the feature with 10 running after 12 laps. Only 2 cautions slowed the action. Hard Charger was Conrad who came from 15th to win.

Notes: Mike Murphy who was running 2nd blew an engine on the last lap. He told me after the race that he had put in a bigger gear to try to go faster and it had hurt his best engine. He has another engine but it is not as good or as big as this one.

In Broughton’s Sports & Trophy World Mini Wedge action Megan Davis won her first ever feature when she passed Zak Kimbrew on the final lap for the win. Davis also won the heat.

Notes: Last week it was we reported that someone else had won the Mini Wedge heat and actually Davis had won her first ever heat. This week her dad, her granddad and of course Megan were really pleased with the win.

Coming next Friday June 30th at the Elkins Speedway will be the Inter-Mountain 35 for J&M Grafix Semi-Lates paying $1000 to the winner. Sponsored by the Inter-Mountain. Regular racing in all other classes. Also the first 50 through the hill gate will receive a free BUDWEISER cooler! Hill is only $10 while pits are only $25. Gates open at 5PM with racing at 8PM.                        Robbie Scott wins 2d LM Feature of the year at the Elkins Speedway

By Bob Reed

Kerens, WV. 6/16/2000. Robbie Scott driving the Mighty Mouse Racing #18 Dodge powered Rocket passed leader Gary Dalton on lap 18 and led the final 7 laps for his 2d Budweiser LM win of the year at the Elkins Speedway.

Scott told the largest crowd of the year at the Speedway that after his heat race he and his crew which consist of him and his dad made a few changes which tightened the car up for the feature. After a few laps in the feature it paid off as the car began to work. He moved into 2d on lap 15 when he got around Mike Benedum and then after working on race-long leader Dalton he used lapped traffic on lap 18 to get by Dalton on the back straight. Scott then drove off to almost a straight-away win over the final 7 caution-free laps.

At the drop of the green outside polesitter Dalton moved into the lead followed by 4th starting Mike Benedum, polesitter Steve Wilmoth , Scott and 6th starting Skip Hare. On lap 2 Butch McGill from 7th moved past Hare for 5th. Then on lap 3 Scott passed Wilmoth and this order was set for the next 11 laps until lap 14 when McGill moved by Wilmoth. The top 5 only changed again when Scott got by Benedum on lap15 and Dalton on lap18. McGill with a late charge got by Benedum on lap 23 and was closing the gap on Dalton at the checkered.

Fifth starting Jarod Hawkins dropped back quickly on the start and was never a factor as he finished 9th while 11th starting Chuck Harper made some gains early but could only get to 7th behind 9th starting Charlie George.

At the checkered Scott led Dalton by almost a straight while Dalton had a nice margin over a quick closing McGill, Benedum and Wilmoth. Heats to Wilmoth, Dalton and Scott.

Notes: Scott’s Blue,White & Green #18 is powered by a Stanton Dodge engine and is sponsored by Amos Paving, Shuck Construction Co, Stanton Racing Engines, Hoosier Racing Tires, Walt’s Inc, Rocket Chassis and Banshee Motorsports Designs & Decals.

Notes: 18 cars started the feature with 16 running after 25 laps. Only 1 caution on lap 12 slowed the action. Hard charger was McGill who started 7th and finished 3d, a gain of 4 spots.

Notes: Duke Pratt was out for the first time this year with his #28. Also Dusty Hamrick who has been running SL ran LM tonight with his #55.

Tracy Sampson passed early leader John Tallman on lap 6 and held then held off young Jacob Hawkins over the final 10 laps for his first J&M Grafix SL win of the year and 2d of his career at the Elkins Speedway.

At the drop of the green polesitter Tallman took the lead followed by Sampson, outside polesitter Hawkins, Brad Harris and Nick Corley. Corley brought out the 1st caution on lap 3 and went to the tail with Donnie Lewis now assuming 5th. The order remained this way until lap 6 when Sampson got by Tallman and then the next lap Hawkins dropped Tallman to 3d. On lap 13 Michael Jackson brought out the 2d caution which proved to be the downfall of Tallman, Harris and Lewis.

On the restart Tallman got loose and started to spin in turns 1 & 2. Both Harris and Lewis could not avoid him and the three collided bringing out caution #3. The top 5 now was Sampson, Hawkins, Eric Hudkins, Billy Brown and Michael Jackson. This was the way they finished. Harris, Tallman and Lewis came back from the tail to finish 6th, 7th and 8th. Heats to Tallman and Hawkins.

Notes: Sampsons #12 is a 1999 Rocket bought new by Rick Burrows. It is Chevrolet powered and sponsors are Lauttamus Communications, Thunder Canyon Motorsports Inc and Liberty Contracting Services.

Notes: 12 cars started the feature with 11 running after 20 laps. Three cautions slowed the action. Hard Charger was Hudkins who started 11th and finished 3d, a gain of 8 spots. New cars tonight were Steve Booth, Buckhannon and Mike Sturm, Belington. Eric Hudkins was back driving the car in which Mike Benedum won last week’s feature.

Delmas Whiteman, Bridgeport won his first ever Miller’s Used Cars AMRA Modified feature when he won the make-up feature from May 27th. Whiteman started on the pole and led all 10 laps for the win. His only competition came from Steve Higgins who could only get within 4 or 5 car lengths a couple of times and never close enough to attempt a pass. Whiteman won over Higgins, Sam Henderson and Kevin Hamrick.

Notes: Only 4 cars started with 3 finishing. 2 cautions slowed the action.

In the regularly scheduled feature Jacob Hawkins won his first ever Miller’s Used Cars AMRA Modified feature at the Elkins Speedway.

At the drop of the green outside polesitter Phil Jeffries jumped to the immediate lead followed by Hawkins, Sam Henderson, polesitter Tom Sigler and Higgins. Jeffries was running away and began lapping cars on lap 5 when he came upon Kevin Hamrick. As Jeffries, who was much faster, started around Hamrick, Hamrick changed directions into the path of Jeffries. Jeffries hit him square in the rear, bumper to bumper. Both cars stopped on the front straight. Luckily not much damage and both cars continued but on the rear.

Hawkins now had the lead which he maintained over the final 11 laps while Jeffries charging hard fought his way back to 2d at the checkered. Sigler was 3d followed by Henderson and Higgins. The heat was won by Sigler over Jeffries and Hawkins.

In Elkins Builder’s Supply/Guardian Fiberglass PS action Chad Green, Grafton won both the make-up feature from May 27th and the regularly scheduled feature. In both features Green started on the pole and led every lap for the win. In the regular feature he barely held off Anthony Arbogast at the line for the win while in the make-up feature Frank Wine chased him for the first 6 laps until he spun in turn 4 which almost took out Arbogast who was running 3d. In the melee Kris Southern went by and chased Green to the line. Heats tonight were won by Green, Wine and Arbogast.

Notes: 26 cars in the pits tonight. In the make-up feature 21 cars started the feature with 15 running after 12 laps. 5 cautions slowed the action. In the regular feature 22 cars started the feature with 12 running after 12 laps. In the make-up feature the Hard-Charger was Dusty Swecker who started 19th and finished 6th, a gain of 13 spots. Nelson Bise Jr also gained 13 spots as he came from 22nd to 9th. In the regular feature Rusty Ball was the Hard Charger as he came from 20th to 6th, a gain of 14 spots.

Notes: A first lap crash on the start in the first feature eliminated the cars of Mark Moore and Justin Arbogast for the night.

Also a dual winner in Leslie Equipment Co 4 Cylinder action as Terry Conrad extended his winning streak to 6 with the two wins. In the make-up feature he bested Kenny Rowback, Dave Mullenax, Larry Hoover and Mike Murphy while in the regular feature he held off newcomer Ronnie Cooper, Murphy, newcomer Terry Styer and Mullenax. Heats tonight were won by Cooper and Conrad.

Notes: In the make-up feature which was picked up on lap 3 Conrad led the remaining laps. Russ Burner and Jake Tasker did not return tonight. 9 cars began and finished the 10 remaining laps with no cautions.

Notes: In the regular feature 17 cars started the feature with 14 running after 12 laps. The only reason all 17 weren’t running was a last lap crash in turn 3 & 4 involving 3 cars which resulted in all 3 being towed or pushed off. Hard Charger was Terry Styer who started 17th and finished 4th, a gain of 13 spots.

Zak Kimbrew won his 3rd Broughton’s Sports & Trophy World Mini Wedge Feature of the year at the Elkins Speedway by besting last week’s winner Garrett Paugh, Megan Davis and Ryan Watson. Paugh won the heat.

Tonight the first 3 places in each class received trophies compliments of Special Olympics/Elkins Big Lots #485.

Next week the Speedway will hold the Annual Chuck Gear Memorial on Saturday June 24th. Budweiser Late Models will pay $5000 to the winner with $500 to start. There will also be a huge FIREWORKS display! All other classes will also be running. The first 100 persons through the hill gate will receive a free BUDWEISER T-shirt. Hill Gate is $15 with pits $35. Butch McGill wins first of year at the Elkins Speedway on Randall McCoy night

By Bob Reed

Kerens, WV. 6/9/2006. Butch McGill, West Union, driving the Leggett Motorsports #1MC Ford Taurus passed early leader Jarrod Hawkins on lap 15 and led the final 11 laps to win his first Budweiser LM feature of the year on Randall McCoy night at the Elkins Speedway.

After the race McGill stated: “I knew that Jimmie(Skidmore) would get this track right and tonight showed it. The track has been rough the first several nights but tonight it was smooth.” He also thanked all the fans and Randall McCloy for coming out. When McGill, a diehard Ford man, met McCloy, who was wearing a Ford Jacket, in victory lane he told McCloy: “You’re wearing the right jacket.”

At the drop of the green outside polesitter Kenny Johnson took the lead trailed by polesitter Jarrod Hawkins, 4th starting McGill, 3d starting Tim Senic, 6th starting Robbie Scott and 5th starting Chuck Harper. This order lasted only until lap 3 when Johnson got wide in turn 3 & 4 and Hawkins, McGill and Scott went by dropping him to 4th. Senic who was having problems began dropping back through the field and dropped out on lap 6. Harper dropped Johnson to 5th on lap 6. Then on lap 7 Steve Wilmoth moved into 5th when he passed Johnson. The top 6 ran in this order until lap 15 when McGill took the lead.

From lap 3 when Hawkins took the lead thru lap 15 when McGill passed him Hawkins, McGill and Scott ran in a group. McGill was all over Hawkins every lap with Scott right there pressing McGill. Finally on lap15 McGill used the lapped car of John Ward to get under Hawkins on the back straight and then passed Hawkins coming off turn 4 to take the lead which he kept to the end. Going thru turn 1 the three were still real close and Hawkins who was trying to work back by McGill and also trying to hold off Scott spun. Hawkins was sent to the tail. The top 5 now was McGill, Scott, Harper, Wilmoth and Johnson with Shawn Poling a close 6th and a hard charging Charlie George from 12th close behind.

Over the final 11 laps Hawkins could only get by Skip Hare while no other positions changed. Scott was all over McGill the final laps but McGill held him off at the flag by less than a car length for the win. Harper was 3rd followed by Wilmoth in 4th and Johnson in 5th. Heats to Hawkins and Johnson.

Notes: 13 cars started the feature with 11 running after 25 laps. 5 cautions slowed the action. Hard charger of the night was Charlie George who started 12th and finished 7th, a gain of 5 spots. Kenny Johnson and Charlie George were out for the first time this year.

Notes: McGill’s #1MC Taurus is Ford powered and is a Rocket chassis. Sponsors are Jenkins Ford, Mitchell Drilling, KFC Weston/Elkins/Buckhannon, NAPA Auto & Truck Parts, West Union, Poske’s Performance Parts, Lee Phillips Enterprises, Triple Supply and Hoosier.

Mike Benedum driving the #8 normally driven by Eric Hudkins led all 20 laps of the J&M Grafix SL feature for his first SL win of the year at the Elkins Speedway.

After winning the first heat and starting on the pole all Benedum had to do was hold off 2nd heat winner and outside pole starter Jacob Hawkins the entire distance for the win. Hawkins was close every lap but never could make a pass and settled for 2nd followed by Brad Harris, Tracy Sampson and Nick Corley. Harris who caused a caution on the first lap and started scratch, came back to finish 3d while Corley who finished 5th went to the tail after being involved in a lap 4 tangle on the front straight with Robert Radcliff, Donnie Lewis and Wade Sigler. Heats to Benedum and Hawkins.

Notes: 12 cars started the feature with only 5 running after 20 laps. Only 3 cautions slowed the action. Wade Sigler was the only new car tonight. Hard charger was Troy Frazier who started 12th and finish 6th, a gain of 6 spots.

Notes: The #8 driven by Benedum is a Rocket chassis and is sponsored by Timber Management LLC, AFP Inc and Driftwood Auto Sales.

Local favorite Louie Krushansky set fast time, won the first heat, started on the pole and then led all 30 laps of the Miller's Used Cars AMRA Road Warrior Series “Battle in the Valley 30” for his 2d Road Warrior win of 2006 and his 3rd win of the year at the Elkins Speedway.

Krushansky said: “It is always nice to come back to my home track and win a big race like this.”

Dave Defibaugh who had the same time as Krushansky but timed later in qualifications won the 2d heat and started outside pole ran 2d for the first 13 laps until 3rd starting and third heat winner David Groves got by him. Dave then ran 3rd until lap 24 when he spun in turn 2 and went to the tail. When Defibaugh spun this put Mark Dickson in 3d with Will Rowe in 4th and Kenny Riddle, who won the first 2006 visit of the Road Warriors to the Elkins Speedway, to 5th. On lap 26 Riddle was black flagged for spinning Rowe in turn 3. This disqualification moved Kenny Johnson in the Hassey Chassis House Car into 5th. At the checkered Krushansky barely beat Groves with Dickson in 3d followed by Rowe in 4th and Johnson in 5th. Defibaugh came back from the tail to finish 6th. Heats to Krushansky, Defibaugh and Groves who were the 3 quick qualifiers.

Notes: Krushansky”s #23 GRS chassis modified is Chevrolet powered and is sponsored by Denzle Turner Excavating Inc, Dalton Brothers Lumber Co, Dari Delite, Hilling Trucking, Bulldog Logging, Tax Tech and Jack’ Auto.

Notes: 21 cars took time with 20 starting the feature. Only 9 cars were running after 30 laps. Sixteen (16) cautions slowed the action to a crawl at times with several cars being sent to the pits for being involved in excessive cautions. Hard charger was Doug Browning who advanced 7 spots from 14th to finish 7th.

Notes: In heat race action Phil Jeffries who failed to cross the scales and had to start scratch in the 3rd heat went from 7th to 3rd on the 1st lap but couldn’t improve his position any further in the final 7 laps. In the feature he was quick at times but after starting 9th ended up finishing 8th.

Anthony Arbogast won his 2nd Elkins Builders Supply/Guardian Fiberglass PS feature of the year when he passed early leader Chad Green on lap 3 and never looked back to win the $300 Pure Stock Special.

With a starting field of 26 cars the carnage started on lap 2 and never stopped. Finally after only 10 laps of the scheduled 20 laps in the books, the race was called and Arbogast declared the winner. Of the 10 laps only the 1st, 3rd and 5th laps were run caution free. The other 7 laps had at least one caution and most had two or more. Arbogast who started 6th began his charge at the drop of the green and was running 3d on lap 2. He passed both Green and Lynn Moore on lap 3 to take the lead and drove away. Green dropped out on lap 5 with mechanical problems. At the finish Arbogast led Lynn Moore, Dave Riggs, Zack Bohan and Pat Frazier. Heats to L. Moore, Green and Riggs.

Notes: 29 cars in the pits tonight with 26 starting the feature. Only 16 were still running after 10 laps. Hard charger was Kris Southern who started 25th and finished 6th. Barry Conrad was in the ‘0’ of Punky Conrad while Tim Moore was in the ‘112’ of Randy Arbogast tonight.

Terry Conrad remained undefeated in Lester Equipment Co 4 Cylinder action as he led all 12 laps from the outside pole for his 4th win of the season. Kenny Roback was the best of the rest with Dave Mullenax 3rd, Chris Waugh 4th and Mike Murphy 5th. Heats to Murphy and Conrad.

Notes: 13 cars started the feature with 9 running after 12 laps. Only 1 caution slowed the action. Hard charger was Mike Simpson driving Gary Lester’s #8 Dodge truck who started 12th and finished 8th, a gain of 4 positions.

Garrett Paugh, son of longtime LM racer Neil Paugh, won his first feature of the year in Broughton’s Sports & Trophy World Mini Wedges at the Elkins Speedway by passing leader Megan Davis on the white flag lap and then holding off Zak Kimbrew at the line.
Kimbrew finished 2d followed by Davis, Ryan Watson and newcomer Alexis Howell. Kimbrew won the only heat.

Note: Paugh won in a car purchased just this week from D.J. Crawford as he demolished his car two weeks ago when he hit one of the tires on the inside of the track.

NOTES: Talk about loyalty or &*^%*&. Connie Skidmore who scores at the track was in the hospital this week for an operation which was pretty serious. She got out of the hospital Friday and was at the track.

NOTES: We should also give some kudos to Jim Skidmore who I understand was at the track working on the track surface 4 nights this week. Jim did all of this even though he works a full daytime job and his wife was in the hospital plus he has a 40 mile round trip drive from his house to the track daily. Everything worked out for the best as Connie is out of the hospital and the track surface was the best that it has been this year. When you see him tell him how much you appreciate his efforts.

Next Friday June 16th at the Speedway is “Trophy Night for All Classes” sponsored by Special Olympics/Big Lots #485. Trophies will be presented to drivers in all classes. Also the Monster Trucks which will perform on Saturday night June 17th will be on display. Also the fogged out features (AMRA Modified, PS and 4 Cyl) will be run tonight. The first 100 thru the Hill Gate will receive a Budweiser hat. Hill is only $10 with Pits only $25.

Saturday night June 17th a huge Monster Truck/Quad/Motorcycle Show will be held at the Speedway sponsored by Elkins Fordland, Tygart Valley Motors and Scott’s Auto Sales. Tickets are only $12.

Chuck Harper wins 1st Leg of WV State Championship Series at the Elkins Speedway

By Bob Reed                                      Photos

Kerens, WV. 5/26/2006. Local favorite Chuck Harper, Beverly, WV driving his familiar red and blue #00H LM passed race long leader Tim Dohm on lap 30 and led the final 6 laps to win the 1st leg of the WV State Championship Series at the Elkins Speedway.

Harper who started on the pole lost the lead to Dohm at the drop of the green but hounded Dohm every lap of the race and actually passed him for the lead three times. The first two times the yellow flag flew before a lap was completed and Dohm was put back in front. Finally the pass on lap 30 held and Harper extended his lead to 4 or 5 car lengths at the finish for a very popular win.

At the drop of the green Dohm, Harper and Steve Wilmoth distanced themselves from 4th place Paul Wilmoth who had a short gap over 5th place Robbie Scott who was having quite a battle with Keith Barbara, Mike Benedum, Butch McGill and Rick Williams. The battle between this group was slowed on lap 5 when Scott got into P. Wilmoth in turn 2 and spun bringing out a caution. Scott retired to the pits with a sticking throttle and possible engine problems.

At this lap 5 break Dohm led Harper, S. Wilmoth, Benedum, P. Wilmoth, Barbara, McGill, Holbert, Williams and Hornsby. Again on the start Dohm, Harper and S. Wilmoth jumped out together leaving the rest of the field to fight for 4th on back. On lap 7 P. Wilmoth got high off turn 3 & 4 and lost 10 positions and 2 laps later retired to the pits with electrical problems.

While Dohm was hold off Harper and Wilmoth most of the action was occurring in the middle of the field. Thirteenth starting Billy Holbert made his move early and by lap 5 had moved into 5th a spot which he held until the finish. Sixth starting Keith Barbara in early action was running as low as 9th but as the field thinned out he began literally fighting his way back to the front and on lap 24 reached 3d but after a lap 32 restart dropped out with mechanical problems. Tenth starting McGill ran in 8th or 9th for the first 15 laps and then slowly progressed through the field. He entered the top 5 on lap 20 and advanced to 3d on lap 24 where he finished. Eighth starting Mike Benedum got as high as 4th by lap 5 where he stayed for awhile but then dropped back to as low as 7th on lap 20 but fought his way back to 4th on lap 32 where he finished. Eleventh starting Shawn Poling ran a steady race in or near the top 10 all night and finished with a respectable 7th place finish. Eighteenth starting Gerald Davis made a steady climb through the field all night. By lap 15 he was in the top 10 and ended up with a strong 6th place finish. Twelfth starting Henry Hornsby fought with Davis and Poling all evening and ended up with a 8th place finish.

After Harper got by Dohm in lapped traffic on lap 30 for the lead only 1 more caution slowed the action. Harper survived this restart and led Dohm at the line by 5 car lengths with McGill in 3rd, Benedum 4th and Holbert 5th. Heats to Benedum, Barbara and Williams while Harper won the dash. Paul Wilmoth Jr was the quick qualifier @ 14.809.

Notes: Harpers #00H is a CJ Rayburn chassis powered by a Pro-Power built Chevrolet. Sponsors are J-Rods Vending, Rick Sturms Motorsports, Melvin’s Automatic Transmissions, Leslie Equipment Co, Triple H Construction and Hoosier.

Notes: 27 LM took times with 24 starting the feature which was made up of the 4 quick qualifiers, 5 from each of the 3 heats and 5 from the consi for the total of 24. 11 cars were running after 35 laps. 7 Cautions and 1 red flag slowed the action. The Hardcharger was Gerald Davis who started 18th and finished 6th, a gain of 12 positions.

Notes: The red flag was brought out when Nick Corley lost control, when off the back straight and hit the caution light pole. His car spun around and he hit the tire protecting the pole backwards, knocking the fuel cell completely out of the car. With fuel running all over the ground and the electric still on, the firemen sprayed foam all over everything before anything could be removed. After the car was removed the fuel cell was drained and removed. Then the pole was put back upright. All of this took almost an hour. Nick was not hurt.

Notes: Tim Dohm, Paul Wilmoth Jr, Keith Barbara, Rick Williams and Henry Hornsby made their first visits of the year to the Elkins Speedway.

Notes: Paul Wilmoth who was quick qualifier, qualified with a miss in the engine. They changed the electrical box to run the dash but the car had no power and he finished 4th. This box was changed and he did a few practice laps before the LM consi. Then in the feature he pulled out on lap 8 because he said the car still didn’t have any power blaming it on the electrical box.

Notes: Robbie Scott told me that the throttle stuck on his car is the reason that he got into Paul Wilmoth on lap 5 in the 1st turn and spinning. He also told me that the water level was low so there could be another problem with the engine when they check further. He and Paul were at Paul’s trailer discussing their problems when I spoke with them.

In Broughton’s Sports & Trophy World Mini Wedge action Brandon Fluharty won his first ever feature at the Elkins Speedway. Garrett Paugh son of former LM racer Neal finished 2d. Fluharty also won the heat.

In the other 3 classes only heats were run. The Leslie Equipment Co 4 Cyl feature was started but the fog would not lift and the race was red flagged. The 4 Cyl, PS and AMRA modified features will be made up in the near future. Results of the heats are in the Summary.

Notes: During hot laps for the AMRA modifieds Tom Sigler hit one of the tires on the inside of turn 3 while trying to pass Kevin Helmick. When he hit the tire the car jumped into the air and made a complete roll coming down on its top. Tom was knocked unconscious but was talking to the paramedics later. He was taken out of the car on a backboard and was transported to a local hospital. At print time I had not heard of his condition.

Next Friday June 2nd at the Elkins Speedway is Randall McCoy Night. Randall will be handing out trophies to all the winners. On tap is the Elkins Builders Supply/Guardian Fiberglass PS Special paying $300 to the winner. Performance Racing Fuels will donate $250 to the LM feature making the winner’s share $1250 for the night. They will also donate $250 to Randall McCoy. Mike Squires of J&M Grafix LLC will donate $250 to the SL feature making the winner’s share $650 for the night. Mike will also donate $250 to Randall McCoy. Trophies for this night are sponsored by the McCoy family.

Chuck Harper wins first of the year at the Elkins Speedway

By Bob Reed

Kerens, WV. 5/12/2006. From the outside pole Chuck Harper led all 25 laps of the Budweiser LM feature for his first win of the year at the Elkins Speedway.

At the drop of the green Harper from his outside pole position powered around polesitter Steve Wilmoth for the lead. With Harper on the top and Wilmoth trying the middle to get around him the two fought for the lead for the first few laps until Harper began pulling away. As Harper caught the rear of the field on lap 9, he slowed as last week because two cars were fighting for position and there was no place to go. This allowed Wilmoth and 3d place Jerrod Hawkins to close up on his rear bumper but just as Wilmoth got close Harper went between lapped cars and opened his lead back up. In this melee both Harper and Wilmoth made slight contact with a different lapped car in their attempts to get by but neither suffered any damage.

Harper with his good lead had no one to contend with the rest of the way but now Wilmoth had Hawkins on his rear bumper and Hawkins finally worked his way by Wilmoth on lap 18 for 2d.

At the checkered Harper led Hawkins, Wilmoth, Billy Holbert and Donnie Dotson. Heats to Wilmoth and Harper.

Notes: 12 cars started the feature with 9 running after 25 laps. Only 2 cautions slowed the action.

Notes: Harpers #00H is a CJ Rayburn chassis powered by a Pro-Power built Chevrolet. Sponsors are J-Rods Vending, Rick Sturms Motorsports, Melvin’s Automatic Transmissions, Leslie Equipment Co, Triple H Construction and Hoosier.

Brad Harris, Belington, won his first ever J&M Grafix SL feature at the Elkins Speedway. Harris passed early leader Billy Brown on lap 4 and then survived 5 yellow flags for the win. On lap 10 John Tallman buzzed around Harris on the top on the back straight for the lead but before the lap was completed the yellow flew for Tracy Sampson which put Harris back in the lead for the restart. Harris then maintained his lead until Kevin Keene got under him and took the lead on lap 15. The next lap Harris returned the favor and got under Keene to retake the lead. While this was going on Jacob Hawkins who was very fast on the top sneaked and passed Keene and Harris to take the lead on lap 18 but before the lap was completed, the yellow flew for Tracy Sampson and the lap was not counted.

Harris again was put back on the point from where he maintained the lead over the final laps for his first win ever in SL and first win in any class since 1992 at the Elkins Speedway. Harris led Hawkins, Donnie Lewis, Tallman and Brown at the line. Heats to Brown and Tallman.

Harris said after the race when asked what he thought about all the action in the race: “It was interesting!”

Notes: Only 11 cars in the pits tonight with 10 starting the feature and 7 running after 20 laps. 6 cautions slowed the action.

Notes: Harris’s #29H Rocket is sponsored by J Rods Vending, Miller’s Used Cars, Autodynamics, Pitzer Service Center, 38/92 Express, Lil’ Moe’s and Talbott Funeral Home. This car is the ‘O’ car that Chuck Harper drove some and sold to Harris last year.

Notes: Tracy Sampson, Billy Brown and Donnie Lewis were out for the first time this year.

Notes: In his heat Billy Beachler exploded his engine. This was the 2d engine in 2 weeks for Beachler as he broke the engine in the car last week even though he won the feature.

Louie Krushansky won his 2d Miller’s Used Cars AMRA Modified feature of the year when he passed early leader Tom Sigler on lap 10 and never looked back.

In lapped traffic Krushansky squeezed by Sigler on the back straight and Sigler lost the lead. On next lap Sigler while running 2d and trying to hold off Dave Defibaugh hit the front straight wall and was towed to the pits. Over the final laps Defibaugh could never get close enough to Krushansky to mount a challenge for the lead as Krushansky won by a good margin over Defibaugh, Phil Jeffries, Sam Henderson and Delmas Whiteman. The heat was also won by Krushansky.

Notes: A very light field of only 6 cars. All started the feature with 5 running after 15 laps. Only 1 caution for Sigler on lap 11.

Greg Hauger, Uniontown, Pa, in his first visit of the year to the Elkins Speedway won the Elkins Builders Supply/Guardian Fiberglass PS Feature.

Hauger from the outside pole passed early leader and polesitter Chad Green on lap 5 and led the final 8 laps for the win. Green tried several times over the final laps to get by Hauger but the smooth Hauger never made a slip and Green who was not smooth could never get a good run to make a charge even though he got beside Hauger several times. At the finish Hauger led Green, Kris Southern, last week’s winner Anthony Arbogast and first week’s winner Lynn Moore. Heats to Green, Hauger and Southern.

Notes: 24 cars in the pits with 22 starting the feature. 18 were running after 12 laps. Only 3 cautions slowed the action.

Notes: New cars were Hauger and John Ford. Mike Baldwin was out for the first time this year in the 6B of Randy Bise.

In Leslie Equipment Co 4 Cyl action Terry Conrad won his 3d feature of the year. Conrad who started on the pole remains undefeated at the track, was lapping cars by lap 4 and won by over ½ lap. Mike Murphy was 2d with Kenny Rowback 3d, Daniel Simpson 4th and Josh Simpson 5th. Heats to Conrad and Dave Mullenax.

Notes: Mullenax ran 2d for the first 7 laps and then went pitside with mechanical problems. Mullenax is fast when he is running but has broken almost every week.

Notes: Gary Tracy was a new car this week. Kenny Rowback was out for the first time this year.

In Broughton’s Sports & Trophy World Mini Wedge action Zak Kimbrew won his 2d feature in a row at the Elkins Speedway. Kimbrew led Garret Paugh, Lindsey Smarr, Kodi Tingler and Megan Davis.

Next week at the Elkins Speedway is The Randall McCloy Special. It is also Ladies Night. There will be a Powder-Puff for the Ladies. (Must use a PS or 4 Cyl.) Randall McCloy will be the guest flagman for the LM Feature. Also the first 200 paid through the Hill gate will receive Budweiser Key Chains. Hill is only $10 with pit $25.

The following week Friday May 26th is the first leg of the WV State Championship Series sponsored by Roy’s RV Supercenter and Roy’s Home Sales paying $2000 to the winner. All classes except SL will be running this night.

Robbie Scott wins LM and Ken Riddle wins AMRA Road Warrior at the Elkins Speedway

By Bob Reed

Kerens, WV. 5/5/2006. Robbie Scott, Shinnston, WV driving the Mighty Motorsports #18 Dodge powered Rocket led the Budweiser LM feature 3 times with the final time being the last lap for his first win of the 2006 season at the Elkins Speedway.

At the drop of the green outside polesitter Gary Dalton got the jump on polesitter Scott and led down the back straight but Scott fought back to nip Dalton at the line to officially lead the first lap. Dalton then slipped over the bank in turns 1 & 2 which brought out the first of 2 cautions and sending him to the rear. On the restart Scott was followed by Billy Holbert, Tim Senic, Donnie Dotson and Steve Wilmoth.

Over the next 7 laps Holbert chased Scott but could never challenge for the lead. All of the action was behind these two as both the 7th starting Wilmoth and 9th starting Chuck Harper were moving through the field. On lap 8 Wilmoth got by Dotson for 3d and Harper by Senic for 5th. The next lap Skip Hare brought out caution number 2 which bunched the field. At lap 9 Scott led Holbert, Wilmoth, Harper and Dotson.

On the restart Wilmoth passed Holbert coming off turn 2 on the top for 2d and closed in on Scott. The next lap he took the lead and began pulling away. On lap 9 Harper had moved to 4th around Dotson and immediately moved in on Scott. Everything changed on lap 15 as Wilmoth with his big lead suddenly went to the pits with a broken shock giving the lead back to Scott.

Harper, who had gotten by Dotson on lap 9, began to pressure Scott and dove under Scott going down the back straight on lap 17 and took the lead in turns 3 & 4 and led lap 18. Harper then began increasing his lead and looked a sure winner. But on lap 24 Harper came upon the tail of the field and hesitated. When he tried to get around the cars of Hare and Joe Loudin some contact was made with Hare and Harper almost spun and slowed considerably. Before Harper could get back up to speed Scott took advantage and passed him. Scott crossed the line several car lengths in front of Harper for the win. These two were followed across the line by Holbert, Dalton and Dotson. Heats to Scott and Dalton.

Notes: Only 14 cars in the pits tonight with 13 starting the feature. 10 were running after 25 laps. Only 2 cautions slowed the action. The Hard Charger was Harper who started 9th and finished 2d a gain of 7 spots. Dalton after going to the tail on the first lap actually gained 9 spots as he came from 13th to 4th.

Notes: Scott’s Blue,White & Green #18 is sponsored by Amos Paving, Shuck Construction Co, Stanton Racing Engines, Hoosier Racing Tires, Walt’s Inc, Rocket Chassis and Banshee Motorsports Designs & Decals.

Notes: Bob Scott, Robbies dad, told me before the night started that they didn’t know if Robbie could last the night as he is recovering from having a Cyst removed. They had plenty of sponges available to try to keep the seat and seat belts from putting pressure on the area. Apparently it worked as he lasted all 25 laps and won.

Notes: Mike Benedum was driving one of his old cars which is now owned by Eric Hudkins and is number 8. Mike told me that his work schedule keeps him from getting his own equipment to Elkins in time to race on Friday nights. He said that he didn’t get here tonight until after 7:30.

Billy Beachler driving the Pennington Motorsports #37Jr Rocket led all 20 laps of the J&M Grafix SL feature for his first ever win at the Elkins Speedway. Teammates Beachler and John Tallman led the field to the green with Tallman getting the jump on the first attempt at a start but Nick Corley and Brad Hudson brought out the caution negating Tallman’s good start. On the second attempt polesitter Beachler took the lead and never looked back. He had a couple scares as he went off the top of turn 2 on lap 11. He came back on the track in front of Tallman who had to brake hard to keep from hitting him in the rear and thus Beachler maintained his lead which was now less than one car length. The next lap Tallman while putting pressure on Beachler went off the back straight and Beachler’s lead was built back up to a comfortable margin. Then with 1 lap to go Beachler almost spun in turn 3 & 4 and Tallman again closed the gap. Beachler again recovered and went on for the win.

After the race Beachler told me that the car had shut off which had caused him to almost spin near the end of the race.

At the finish both Pennington Motorsports cars (Beachler and Tallman) were followed across the line by Kevin Keene, Brad Harris and Dusty Hamric. Heats to Beachler and Tallman.

Notes: 12 cars started the feature with 6 running after 20 laps. 3 cautions slowed the action with 2 on the first lap. Hard Charger was Brad Harris who started 9th and finished 4th a gain of 5 spots.

Beachler’s #37Jr Rocket is powered by a Hershey Chevrolet and sponsored by Shag’s Lumber, Swecker Engineering, Pizza Hut, Elkin’s Shop’N’Save, Miller’s Used Cars, Butch’s Place and Mt Storm Fuel.

Notes: Ron Clevenger, Bill Brown and Troy Frazier were out for the first time this year.

From the outside pole Parkersburg’s Ken Riddle took the lead at the drop of the green and led all 30 laps of the Miller’s Used Cars AMRA Modified “Thunder in the Hills 30” for the AMRA Road Warrior Series.

When Riddle climbed out of his car after the race he yelled: “I’m so happy!!!! I’ve been coming to Elkins all these years and this is the first time that I have ever won a feature! Thank You!” He was ecstatic as he shook hand with everyone in sight and thanked everyone.

When the green flag fell on the event Riddle took the lead followed by 3d starting Louie Krushansky and 5th starting Kenny Johnson but because polesitter Jr Nolan slowed causing contact further back in the field between Teddy Tucker and Doug Thompson, the yellow was brought out. All cars continued but Nolan went pitside and returned on the rear.

On the second start Riddle again took the lead followed by Krushansky, Johnson, David Groves, Dave Defibaugh, Matt Lux, Mark Dickson, Mark Baylor, Doug Henry and Tom Sigler. For the first 5 laps the top ten remained in this order except for Sigler moving to 8th, Baylor to 9th and Brent Trimble now 10th. On lap 7 Riddle began lapping cars as the best action was in the rear of the pack as Nolan was coming from the rear in a hurry as by lap 7 he was in 14th.

On lap 8 Johnson got by Krushansky for 2d and began pressuring Riddle for the lead. He got up under Riddle several times but each time Riddle would pull him coming off the turn and maintain his lead. This lasted for 3 laps until Johnson went wide in turns 3 & 4 on lap 11 and Krushansky, Defibaugh and Groves dropped him to 5th. The next lap Lux dropped him to 6th. Riddle was now maintaining a 3 to 5 car length lead over Krushansky, who was trying to hold off Defibaugh, who was fighting off Groves and then Lux with Mark Dickson chomping at his heals.

On lap 16 Nolan got by Sigler to move into the top 10 while on lap 19 Johnson did a 360 in turn 4 and limped to the pits, ending his night in the Hassey House Car.

On lap 20 the running order was Riddle, Krushansky, Defibaugh, Groves, Lux, Dickson, 12th starting Dale Keplinger, Nolan and Sigler.

The last caution of the event flew on lap 22 when 2d running Krushansky almost lost it in turn 4. When he did 3d running Defibaugh took evasive action and spun. Fourth running Groves just missed both. Since Defibaugh was the only car that actually stopped he was sent to the tail and everyone else got their spot back. He did fight back for a 10th place finish but lost a sure 3d.

Over the final 8 laps Riddle held off Krushansky and Groves. On the final lap Riddle extended his lead several car lengths when Krushansky slowed and both Groves and Dickson got by him. Riddle led Groves, Dickson, Krushansky and Nolan at the checkered. Heats to Nolan, Riddle and Krushansky. Quick Qualifier was Groves @16.56.

Notes: 25 Cars in the pits tonight with 24 starting the feature. 15 cars running after 30 laps. Only 5 cautions slowed the action. Hard Charger was Darren Smith who started 21st and finished 12th. Nolan who lined up on the pole put went to the tail before a lap was completed came from 24th to 5th and passed 19 cars. Nolan also started on the rear of the first heat and passed 7 cars to win the heat for the pole of the feature. So Nolan passed a bunch of cars tonight.

Anthony Arbogast from the outside pole led every lap of the Elkins Builders Supply/Guardian Fiberglass PS feature for his first win of the year. All of the action was behind Arbogast as 6 cautions and a red flag took out all of his competition. Polesitter Chad Greed and Frank Wine followed Arbogast for the first 6 laps until Wine dropped out on lap 7 and Green on lap 8. Also last week’s winner Lynn Moore went out in smoke on lap 6. Zac Bohan got up to 3d on lap 7 and then dropped out the next lap. At the end 12th starting Kris Southern got to 2d but had nothing for Arbogast. Because of all the cautions the race ran over the time limit and only went 11 laps. At the checkered Arbogast was followed by Southern, Robert Isner, 14 year old Matt Moore and Nathan Yokum. Heats to Green and Arbogast.

Notes: 22 cars in the pits tonight with only 20 starting the feature. After all the carnage only 7 were running at the checkered. Hard Charger or Survivor was Chris Lothes who started 19th and finished 7th.

Notes: The finishes of 3d by Robert Isner, 4th by Matt Moore, 5th by Nathan Yokum, 6th by Anthony Cacase and 7th by Chris Lothes were the best ever by these individuals at the Elkins Speedway.

The Leslie Equipment Co 4 Cylinders again was the Terry Conrad show as he won his 2d feature in 2 weeks. This week Conrad finished last in his heat and started 10th in the feature. Conrad waited until the field thinned out and when leader Chris Waugh spun on lap 11 Conrad has his change. On the restart Conrad buzzed by leader Dave Mullenax in turns 1 & 2 and the win was his. He had to wait an extra lap as the next lap Mullenax stopped on the front straight with distributor problems and was pushed off. But Conrad led the final 2 laps followed by Mike Murphy, Gary Lester, Josh Simpson and Waugh. Heats to Larry Hoover and Mullenax.

Notes: Only 11 cars in the pits with all 11 starting the feature. 9 were running after 12 laps. Only 2 cautions slowed the action. Hard Charger was Conrad who started 10 and won, a gain of 9 spots.

In the Broughton’s Sports & Trophy World Mini Wedges Zak Kimbrew won his first ever feature at the Elkins Speedway over Garrett Paugh, Carl Kelly, Austin Friel, Megan Davis and Kodi Tingler.

Megan Davis spun on the last lap and eventhough she was wearing a neck brace had some neck pain. The Randolph Co Ambulance took her to the hospital for a check-up. Glad to say that she is OK!

Next week at the Speedway is Fan Appreciation night with Hill admission only $8. Pit gate is still $25. Regular racing in all classes next week. For further information check out our website @www.elkinsmotorspeedway.com.

Gary Dalton wins season opener at the Elkins Speedway

By Bob Reed

Kerens, WV. 4/28/2006. Gary Dalton, Morgantown, WV driving the Bud & Marshall owned #87 Chevrolet powered Rocket LM won the 2006 season opener at the Elkins Speedway by leading all 25 laps of the Budweiser LM Feature.

Dalton said after the race that he hoped that he this good start would enable him to win many more this year. He also stated that with the track being a little rough because of the new clay and the wet conditions that the high groove (which is his groove) was the smoothest way around the track and was to his advantage.

The race took two attempts to get started but each time Dalton from his outside front row starting position powered around polesitter Jerrod Hawkins to take the lead. On the second start Dalton immediately opened up a 3 car length lead with Hawkins right behind with a short distance back to McGill, Loudin and Harper and the rest of the field several lengths further back. Before the first caution flew Dalton and Hawkins distanced themselves from the field with Harper getting by both McGill and Loudin for 3d.

Within 10 laps Dalton began lapping cars and somehow either by hitting another car or a hole in the track Hawkins bent the right front which began causing him handling problems. On the next yellow just as the green flew he retired to the pits giving up 2d. From this point 6th starting Harper who was now in 2d chased Dalton but could never get close enough to make a serious challenge for the lead. At the checkered Dalton was followed by Harper, McGill, 8th starting Steve Wilmoth and 11th starting Tim Senic. Heats to Hawkins and Dalton.

Notes: Dalton’s #87 Rocket is sponsored by Hall’s Welding Supply, Appalachian Lumber Products and Mid-Atlantic Oil & Gas.

Notes: 17 cars in the pits tonight. All 17 started the feature with 9 running after 25 laps.

Notes: Michael England, Glasgow, KY who is 3d in points on the Lucas Oil Dirt Car Series stopped by tonight on his way to Hagerstown. His dad told me that he wanted to get some laps in a new TNT car but because of track conditions they pulled out their old Rayburn which they raced. His dad also told me that Michael had gotten his start in Mini Wedges.

John Tallman driving a new Lazer chassis Hershey powered SL led every lap of the J&M Grafix SL feature to take the win. Third starting Tallman ended up starting on the front row after both front row starters had problems. On the first attempt at a start polesitter Brad Hutson lost power in turn 2 and brought out a caution. He was pushed to the pits.

Then on the second attempt Jacob Hawkins who had won the 2d heat and was now on the pole stopped in turn 2 bringing out caution number 2 before one lap was completed. Hawkins was towed off with broken front suspension parts.

On the next start Tallman was on the pole and he never looked back. Kevin Keene was on the same straight after 12 laps but Tallman was never seriously challenged. Tallman was followed across the line by Keene, Robert Radcliffe, Nick Corley and Dusty Hamrick.

Notes: Only 11 cars in the pits with 10 starting the feature while only 5 were running after 12 laps. Only 2 cautions with both on the first lap. Because of the attrition rate on the first lap the race was shorted to 12 laps.

Notes: Tallman’s #37 Lazer is owned by Tommy Pennington and is sponsored by Shag’s Lumber, Swecker Engineering, Pizza Hut, Elkin’s Shop’N’Save, Miller’s Used Cars and Butch’s Place.

Notes: Robert Radcliff has moved up from Modifieds with the #1R. Billy Beachler is driving the sister car to Tallmans #37, it is 37Jr and is a Rocket powered by a Cropper engine. Tracy Cooper was out with #CO2. Also Brad Hutson has moved down from LM with his #32H.

Louie Krusansky passed Mark Baylor on lap 6 and led the final 9 laps to win the opening Miller’s Used Cars AMRA Modified Feature. At the drop of the green outside polesitter Baylor took the lead from polesitter Krushansky and jumped out to a 5 car length lead. Baylor looked like he was going to be the winner but on lap 6 he got high in turns 3 & 4 and almost lost it. This allowed Krushansky, Tom Sigler and Brent Trimble to go by. Krushansky never looked back as he led Sigler by a wide margin the final laps. Baylor spun on lap 11 bringing out a caution and he went to the pits ending his night. Last year’s points champion Dave Defibaugh never ran good all night and dropped out after a lap 3 spin. Krushansky led Sigler, Trimble, Doug Thompson and Sam Henderson at the finish.

Notes: Only 9 cars. 8 started the feature with 7 running after 15 laps. Only 2 caution slowed the action.

Notes: Kevin Helmic in #11H was the only new car.

Notes: Sigler’s 2d place finish was his best ever at Elkins while Henderson’s 5th place finish was also his best ever at Elkins.

Notes: Krushansky’s #23 is sponsored by Dalton Brother’s Lumber Co, Dairy Delite, Bulldog Logging, Tax Tech and Jack’s Auto.

Lynn Moore from the pole led every lap of the Elkins Builders Supply/Guardian Fiberglass PS feature for his first win in several years. Moore survived 8 cautions and a hard charge from Anthony Arbogast over the final laps to register the win. On the final lap in turn 3 & 4 Moore made a wiggle which almost cost him the win as Arbogast was up to his door at the line. These two were followed at the line by Chad Green who was involved in a first lap shuffle off turn 1 and a trip to the rear, 9th starting Zack Bohan who is driving his dad’s #19 this year and 16th starting Kris Southern. Heats to Moore, Arbogast and Green.

Notes: 24 PS tonight with 21 starting the feature. 12 were running after 10 laps. 8 cautions. This race ran over the time limit and was stopped after 10 laps.

Notes: Over the winter Moore built a new #72. He took the motor and transmission out of his Camaro and built a Buick. His nephew Mark Moore now drives the Camaro as 72M. Michael O’Brien has a new car with the #13 this year. Randy Thornhill is in the #46.

In Leslie Equipment Co 4 Cyl action Terry Conrad from the pole led all 12 laps for the win. Chris Waugh was the only car that could stay close to Conrad and he was never close enough to challenge for the lead. The only battle on the track was for 3d and Gabe Sigler held on for 3d over Mike Murphy and Daniel Simpson. Heats to Conrad and Sigler.

Notes: 13 cars in the pits. All started the feature and all were running after 12 laps. Only 1 caution on lap 4 for Zack Williams.

Notes: Conrad has now come out of retirement and is continuing winning as he did when he drove years ago.

Notes: The #14 of Russell Burner is a Gremlin!

Carl Kelly won the Broughton’s Sports & Trophy World Mini Wedge feature by leading every lap. Garret Paugh was 2d followed by Zak Kimbrew Lindsey Smarr and Megan Davis.

Next Friday May 5th is the first visit of the year of the AMRA Road Warrior Series to the Elkins Speedway for the “Thunder in the Hills 30”. Hill tickets are only $12 while pits are $27. For further information check our website @ www.elkinsmotorspeedway.com.

Elkins opens 2006 season with practice on Friday night April 21st.

By Bob Reed

Bridgeport, WV. 4/16/2006. After many changes over the off season the Elkins Speedway will open the doors for the 2006 season for practice for all classes Friday evening April 21st. Gates will open at 5PM.

New promoter Brad Hutton of CG Promotions has made extensive changes to the facility. The most noticeable to the drivers will be the new clay on the track while the fans will immediately notice the absence of the Motocross track that was covering the infield. It has been removed and the infield is now level. The track has a new layer of clay and should make for better racing and more passing.

Other changes have been made to the electrical system that was a problem during many events in the past. Other cosmetic changes are in the process of being made and will be ready by opening day or shortly thereafter.

Also announced by CG Promotions is Leslie Equipment Co as the class sponsor for the 4 Cyl class. Leslie Equipment Co joins Budweiser (LM), J&M Grafix LLC (SL), Miller’s Used Cars (AMRA Modified) and Elkins Builder’s Supply/Guardian Insulation (PS) as class sponsor on a weekly basis at the track.

Friday night April 28th is the first scheduled race night of the season with all classes of cars. Budweiser will be the opening night sponsor with the first 100 fans through the Hill Gate receiving a free Budweiser Hat. Hill Gate is only $12 with Pits only $25

Check the Elkins Website @ www.elkinsmotorspeedway.com   for the latest announcements and pictures.

The LMs will also have two rounds of the West Virginia Late Model Series which is being run this year in conjunction with the Tyler County Speedway and has a separate points fund. This series is a rebirth of the WVLMS previously run at Elkins and Interstate. Check both Race Tracks web sites for further info on this series.

More specials are coming for the Semi Lates, Street Stocks and 4 Cylinders and will be announced in the near future.

Also The Elkins Builders Supply/ Guardian Insulation has signed on as the sponsor for the SS class for 2006.
