PARKS, HAMILTON, SHELTON, ADDINGTON AND CUNNINGHAM PICK UP FALL CLASSIC WINS

Saluda, VA – Mark Parks of Forest, VA regained the lead on lap 37 of the 40 lap Victory Lap Late Model feature when Stevie Long and Jamie Lathroum got together in turn 2 while racing for the lead. Parks then held off fast qualifier Sommey Lacey Jr. to capture his first career late model victory at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway.

Parks took the lead from the outside on the initial green with Long, Tom Eriksen and Tony wood 3 in a 3 wide battle for second. Parks led the first 22 laps before jumping the cushion in turn 2 allowing Roland Mann to get to the inside for the lead.

Once out in front Mann began to pull away but came up limping out of turn 2 on lap 24 with a blown motor. On the restart Parks led Long, Lathroum, Ray Love Jr. and Lacey to the green. Long took a look under Parks but couldn’t pull off the pass. Parks bobbled again on lap 26 allowing Long to dive to his inside out of turn 4 for the lead.

Long began to pull away as Parks worked to hold Lathroum at bay for second. Lathroum finally got his car hooked up on the outside and got a run on Parks on lap 33 out of turn 4 for second. Caution fell on lap 35 for a spin by Chris Cooke allowing the field to pull up to the bumper of Long. On the restart Long and Lathroum bolted away form the rest of the field as they battled for the lead.

On lap 37 Lathroum got into Long as they entered just enough to send him spinning and bring out the caution flag for the final time. With both Long and Lathroum at the rear of the field the lead was handed back to Parks. On the restart Parks and lacey pulled away from Scott Adams, Donnie Daniel and Tony Wood. Lacey made a last lap challenge out of turn 4 but Parks held him off for his first career late model victory at Virginia Motor Speedway.

MILLER RUNS TABLE IN MACS SANCTIONED FALL CLASSIC 50 AT VIRGINIA MOTOR SPEEDWAY

Saluda, VA – 9/17/05 –  Jeremy Miller of Littlestown, PA ran the table by setting fast time, winning his heat, the dash and the $10,000 to win MACS sanctioned Fall Classic 50 presented by Thurston Spring Service, Inc. at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway.

Miller took the lead on the drop of the green flag only to have the races first caution fall when Randle Chupp came to rest in turn 2 with a broken axle on the opening lap. On the restart Miller once again showed his dominance and jumped out to the lead.

By lap 4 Miller had built a 5-car length lead over Mike Balzano with Robbie Blair, Jack Pencil and Rod Conley in hot pursuit. On lap 6, twelfth starting Kenny Pettyjohn had worked his way past Conley for 5th on the high side. On lap 8 the battle for third heated up as Blair, Pencil and Pettyjohn went 3-wide out of turn 2 with Pencil coming out with the position and Pettyjohn following to fourth.

On lap 11 24th starting Ricky Elliott worked his way into 9th and looked to be faster than the leader at the time. On lap 14 the races second caution came out closing the field on Miller’s bumper for the restart. Miller chose the outside and on the drop of the green once again set out in the lead. On the restart nineteenth starting Bo Feathers took third from Pettyjohn and went directly after Balzano as the trio battle three wide. On lap 17 Elliott moved into fifth in a battle with Pencil. On lap 18 Elliott went after Pettyjohn for fourth and held the position briefly before Pettyjohn retook the spot in turn 3.

While they battled behind him, Miller worked traffic with easy and began to stretch out his lead. By lap 22 Miller held a 7-car length advantage as Feathers went to work on Balzano for second. The battle for the second spot was intense as Pettyjohn and Elliott joined in on a four-car battle for the spot. On lap 26 Pettyjohn went around the outside of Feathers for third. Feathers would give up and kept the pressure on as Pettyjohn pressured Balzano. Several times the battle for second went three wide and each time Balzano would hold ground.

On lap 30 Miller held a 10 car length lead over Balzano with Feathers, Pettyjohn and Elliott rounding out the top five with twenty laps to go. On lap 36 Feathers dove to the inside of Pettyjohn and pulled even as they exited turn 2. The two raced side by side for two laps before Feathers finally wrestled the spot away at the line on lap 38. With ten to go Miller still held a 10-car length advantage over the field. On lap 44 Elliott got under Pettyjohn in turn 2 only to give the spot back in turn 3.

With the laps winding down and Miller in control the race was for second as Feathers dove under Balzano in turn 3 but couldn’t take the position. Also on lap 47 Elliott pulled into the pits with mechanical problems ending his night. Miller cruised to the victory with Balzano holding off Feathers for second at the line.

“We just had a great car from start to finish tonight, we were able to stay ahead of the curve tonight and it paid off with the win,” commented Miller. “The track was just awesome tonight, I don’t think it has ever been better,” added Miller.

Rounding out the top five were Mike Balzano, nineteenth starting Bo Feathers, twelfth starting Kenny Pettyjohn, and Booper Bare who had to go to the rear of the field after visiting the pits during the races first caution with a flat tire.

In other action Ronald Cusic of Mechanicsville, MD picked up his third win of the season in the Victory Lap Late Models with a flag to flag victory in the 35-lap feature. LATHROUM SPOILS PARTY FOR LOVE AND STATON WITH VICTORY AT VIRGINIA MOTOR SPEEDWAY

Saluda, VA – 9/3/05 - Jamie Lathroum of Mechanicsville, MD spoiled the party for a couple of drivers looking for bonuses in Round 4 of the Victory Lap Late Model $25,000 Challenge presented by BB&T by taking home the victory on U.S. Army Night at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway. Lathroum took the lead from Ray Love Jr. on lap 25 and then held off a stubborn Tom Cohick of Gloucester, VA for his fourth win of the season.

“He (Ray Love) kept jumping the cushion a bit and I figured if I could keep the pressure on him that he might make a mistake, and it happened in turn 2 just enough for me to get to his inside and then he drove it into turn 3 a little too hard sending him for a spin,” commented Lathroum on the battle for the lead an eventual victory.

Lathoum set fast time and inverted the top four in “Hot Lap” time trials putting Tom Cohick and Ray Love Jr. on the front row. Heading into the Challenge series final round Love and Brian Staton had bonus money on the line. Staton haad already secured a $5,000 bonus for winning Rounds two and three and was trying for a $15,000 bonus should he be able to take home the victory. Love had won Round 1 and with a win could take home a $5000 bonus.

Once the green dropped it looked as if Love would be able take home the $5000 bonus as he pulled out a sizeable lead in the first few laps and looked unbeatable. Love took advantage from the outside to gain the lead with Cohick falling in second. On lap 3 Sommey Lacey worked his way into third with a pass on Lathroum and Staton in turn 2.

With Love pulling away Cohick worked to hold off Lacey, Lathroum and Staton in a ferocious battle for second. Working the high side Lathroum shot to the second spot on lap 7 and set out to close the 10-car length advantage established by Love. Caution on lap 10 quickly erased Love’s advantage over the field closing them up on his bumper for the restart.

Lathroum kept the pressure on Love as they two worked the cushion and the traffic. On lap 22 Love slid over the cushion in turn 2 allowing Lathroum to get to his inside. Lathroum pulled in front of Love heading into turn 3 with Love crossing over to the inside of Lathroum. Both drove it hard into the corner with Lathroum’s car sticking and Love’s car spinning to the inside bringing out a caution.

On the restart Lathroum had Cohick, Lacey, Brian Staton and Mark Parks trying to keep pace. On lap 25 Staton made a mistake in turn 1 allowing Mark Parks, Roland Mann and Stevie Long to get by for position. Lathroum used the cushion to his advantage and cruised to his fourth win of the season. Rounding out the top five were Tom Cohick, Sommey Lacey Jr., Roland Mann and Billy Hubbard. Jared Powell picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Championship Rookie of the Race Award with a sixth place finish.
