McGarvey wins Western Md. Nationals thriller on final lap
By Matt Felten
Oct. 30, 2005
CUMBERLAND, Md. – The Red Roof Inn Limited Late Models saved the
best race for last. Shawn McGarvey won the 50-lap main event with a
pass in the final turn on Sunday night at The Rock, Allegany County
Speedway.
McGarvey and Darryl Burkholder traded the lead four times over the
last nine laps.
“That (Burkholder) is always tough,” said the Coalport, Pa., driver
of the No. 8P. “I could get under him here,” he said of turn four.
“What a way to cap off this season. I wanted in a win here in the
worst kind of way. It was a tough race—no doubt about it.”
The win was McGarvey’s only one of the 2005 season at The Rock, but
was his 19th including other speedways. He started on the pole and
led the first 18 laps before Burkholder took over on lap 19.
Burkholder, the 2004 Rock champion and 2005 Hagerstown Speedway
champion, led through the fuel stop on lap 25 and pulled out to a
four car length lead over McGarvey through lap 34.
McGarvey closed in starting on lap 38 and it became apparent
Burkholder was losing ground off of turn four due to handling.
When McGarvey got under Burkholder in turn four on lap 40 and
claimed the lead, Burkholder passed him back in turn two. McGarvey
went out front again on laps 43 and 46. Burkholder fought back in
turn one of lap 47 and held off McGarvey on lap 49.
On the final lap, McGarvey went low again in turn four and beat
Burkholder by a car length to the finish.
Shawn Claar, Shawn Bilger and Tim Smith Jr. closed up on the leaders
to complete the top five.
Smith battled back from a wreck on the start, went to the pits
multiple times for repairs and started at the back of the field. He
was up to ninth by lap 15 and was fifth just before the fuel stop.
Matt Parks was running second when his car broke entering turn
three. He hit and went over the wall to bring out the red flag on
lap three.
Al Shawver, Rance Garlock and Rick Singleton were sixth through
eighth at the finish. Fast qualifier Justin Kann ended up ninth with
Kevin Weyandt in 10th.
The Classic Cars feature was won by Kurt Welsh on the last lap when
a caution flag erased Bill Brown Sr.’s lead in the 20-lap event.
Welsh led from the start through lap eight when Brown ran him down
in turn four. Brown had started 13th and passed Bill Brown Jr., Joe
Snodgrass and Allan Cullum in the top five to get to Welsh.
After taking the lead, Brown led by as many as eight car lengths. A
three-car accident in turn three brought the field together for a
one-lap shootout and Welsh drove inside of Brown in turn two. Cullum
and Snodgrass also took advantage of the opening to drop Brown back
to fourth at the finish. Glenn Elliott was fifth.
Jack Yingling won the special 15-lap feature for his first win on
Saturday night over Darryl Winkler.
Travis Stickley won the Big Kahuna rescheduled feature on Saturday
night over Phil Wilhelm and Rick Potter. Stickley started ninth and
passed Wilhelm with two laps to go. He won by three car lengths.
Marcus VanMeter led through lap 21 until he developed an engine
problem and lost the lead to Wilhelm. Wilhelm was later disqualified
and Potter moved up to second. Kevin Hunsicker, Scot Sipes and Tony
Quade rounded out the top five.
VanMeter was out front again in Sunday’s 25-lap race for the first
lap. Tom Warren took over the lead in turn two and VanMeter chased
him for the rest of the race.
Warren won by two seconds over VanMeter, Mike Duck, Shawn Wyles and
Chuck Weyant.
Bill Henney wrapped up the final night with a convincing win by 2.5
seconds over Dave Swanger in the 30-lap Street Stock race.
Henney started third behind Ashley Barrett and polesitter Dave
Swanger. Barrett led from the green and Henney moved to second. On a
lap three restart, Henney took the lead from Barrett coming off of
turn two.
Henney was uncontested through six more cautions, one of which was
for Barrett’s disabled car.
Swanger led Dave Brown and John Whitfield for second, but Brown was
disqualified. Whitfield, Eddie McClellan and Matt Kerns ended up in
the top five.
The Rock’s awards banquet will be held on Nov. 12. To obtain
tickets, call the office at (410) 857-3821.

Mark Banal wins Big Kahuna V at The Rock, Allegheny County Speedway.
By Bob Reed
Cumberland, Md. 10/15/2005. Mark Banal, St Clairsville, OH driving
the Banal Racing #T8 Malcuit powered C.J Rayburn held off Gary
Stuhler over the final 5 laps to win the Big Kahuna V at the Rock,
Allegheny County Speedway and pocket the $10,000 winner’s share for
his biggest win ever.
Banal stated after the race that: “I’ve led lots of laps in these
big races but this is my first win.” “He told me that he has been
racing since 1979 and this was the most money and the biggest win
that he had ever had.” When I asked him how he thought he was on
tires and he said: “Bob, take a look at the left rear.” I did and it
was so smooth that another lap or two was all that was left in it.
The right rear was almost as smooth.
Banal’s son told me that this was supposed to be Mark’s last race
and that his dad was going to let him drive but when I asked Mark if
he was going to give up racing now since he had won this big race,
he said: “No way!”
At the drop of the green polesitter D.J. Troutman and outside
polesitter Banal went into turn 1 side by side with Troutman finally
getting a slim lead coming off two. D.J. Troutman led the first lap
closely followed by Banal, Dave Troutman, Jeremy Miller, Gary
Stuhler, Dutch Davies, Lynn Geisler, Todd Andrews, Scott Haus and
John Flinner. Just as the leaders caught the rear of the field
Miller got by Dave Troutman for 3d on lap 12 and then Banal on lap
14 for 2d.
The first caution flew on lap 14 for a slowing Nolan Dalton but the
officials led Miller’s pass stand so the running order was now D.J.
Troutman, Miller, Banal, Dave Troutman, Stuhler, Geisler, Haus,
Davies, Andrews, Flinner, Rodney Sweitzer, Jeff Rine, Kirk Ryan,
Jack Pencil, Bob Salathe, Travis Dillman, Eric Zembower, Mike Lupfer,
Rodney Franklin, Greg Fetters, Lance Elson, Chuck LaSalle, Keith
Jackson, Wayne Johnson, Chuck Clise and Matt Sponaugle.
At the drop of the green D.J. Troutman, Miller and Banal took off
and left the rest of the field with Dave Troutman and Stuhler
fighting for 4th & 5th and then another few car lengths back to the
pack. On lap 18 Kirk Ryan stopped on the back straight bringing out
caution #2. Travis Dillman took advantage of this halt in the action
and went to the pits for a quick stop.
When the green again flew Miller immediately was all over D.J.
Troutman and got by him for the lead on lap 19 while Banal dropped
him to 3d the next lap. Miller and Banal began pulling away as they
seemed to be the class of the field. There was a 10 car gap back to
D.J. Troutman and then 10 more back to the battle between Dave
Troutman and Stuhler. The action again slowed on lap 22 when Dillman
stopped on the front straight with a flat right rear tire. He
changed the tire and returned on the tail. The next yellow came out
on the restart when someone hit the cone and the official dropped
the rope. At this point Miller led Banal, D.J. Troutman, Dave
Troutman, Stuhler, Geisler, Haus, Davies, Flinner, Sweitzer and Rine.
Caution #5 was brought out when 9th running Todd Andrews slowed on
the front straight and went to the pits. Chuck LaSalle also went
pitside but returned on the rear for the restart.
Caution #6 flew on lap 28 for a tangle in turns 1 & 2 between Ryan,
Sponaugle, Dillman and Johnson with only Johnson able to continue.
When the green flew this time Miller and Banal again left the field
with D.J. Troutman several lengths back and then the battle between
Dave Troutman and Stuhler several more lengths back. Stuhler ended
this battle on lap 31 when he got by Dave Troutman for 4th and
immediately began closing the gap towards D.J. Troutman.
The field remained the same as the leaders caught the rear of the
field again on lap 40 and began lapping cars. But the action was
again stopped on lap 42 when Bob Salathe who had been slowing for
several laps with a bent nosepiece stopped in turn 4. Because this
caution was so close to the halfway mark officials decided to have
the scheduled fuel stop at lap 42 instead of waiting until lap 44.
At this point Miller was followed by Banal, D.J. Troutman, Stuhler,
Dave Troutman, Geisler, Haus, Davies, Flinner, Sweitzer, Rine,
Pencil, Zembower, Fetters, Franklin, Lupfer, Elson, Clise, Johnson,
LaSalle, Salathe and Andrews who had just returned 13 laps down.
After the fuel stop a long green ensued with very little movement up
front. The leaders ran in clear track until catching the rear of the
field on lap 53. Scott Haus’ pass of Lynn Geisler for 6th during
this perion was the only change during this long green lap period.
On laps 57 this run was stopped as Chuck Clise stopped on the track
bringing out caution #8. At this caution Todd Andrews retired for
the evening. The order was still Miller, Banal, D.J. Troutman,
Stuhler, Dave Troutman, Haus, Geisler, Davies, Flinner, Swietzer,
Rine, Pencil, Franklin, Fetters, Zembower, Elson, Lupfer, Johnson,
Salathe, Lasalle and Clise.
When the green flew Miller and Banal again took off while Stuhler
began working on D.J. Troutman for 3d. Finally on lap 58 Stuhler got
by D.J. Troutman but at this point was at least 10 car lengths
behind the two leaders. Two laps later D.J. Troutman stopped in turn
2 with tire problems and retired to the infield and the race. Lupfer
took advantage of this yellow, went to the pits and returned on the
rear. The top ten was now Miller, Banal, Stuhler, Dave Troutman,
Haus, Geisler, Davies, Flinner, Sweitzer and Rine.
Two laps after the green flew 4th running Dave Troutman pulled
pitside with tire problems that ended his night. Dave told me that
both cars had worn out their tires and that they decided not to put
on new ones and got back out because they would probably end up
tearing up something else.
Four laps later on lap 66 while running 5th Lynn Geisler also had a
flat right rear and stopped on the back straight bringing out
caution #10. He changed the tire and returned on the rear. The order
now was Miller, Banal, Stuhler, Haus, Davies, Flinner, Sweitzer,
Rine, Pencil, Salathe, Franklin, Fetter, Zembower, Johnson, Elson,
Clise, Lupfer, LaSalle and Geisler.
Nine more laps under green with Miller and Banal leaving Stuhler and
then the field a few car lengths behind. This time the leader Miller
had the right rear let go on lap 76 as he stopped on the back
straight bringing out caution #11.
The race was now coming down to a race of attrition or “Whose tires
would last the longest!” Two laps under green and Jeff Rine stopped
in turn 2 with a flat right rear that ended his night. Then 7 more
green laps and Rodney Sweitzer stopped on lap 83 bringing out
caution #13 with a flat right rear.
Stuhler was now all over Banal with both drivers trying to win but
trying to protect their equipment (tires). One more caution closed
the field as Lance Elson stopped on the back straight with a flat
right rear on lap 86.
With 2 laps to go the green flew and Stuhler was all over Banal and
was up to his rear tire several times but just couldn’t get a run to
make a pass. Banal crossed the line with Stuhler glued to his rear
bumper while Scott Haus was several car lengths back in 3d, Dutch
Davies 4th and John Flinner 5th.
On Friday night Gary Stuhler set quick time in qualifying of the 39
cars with a time of 19.782. Also on Friday D.J. Troutman, Banal,
Miller and Dave Troutman won heats while D. J. Troutman won the dash
for the pole. Saturday Fetters and Elson won the 2 B-Mains.
Notes: 27 cars started the feature with 14 running after 88 laps. 14
cautions slowed the action.
Notes: Banal’s #T8 is owned by Banal Racing, is powered by a Malcuit
Chevrolet, and is sponsored by Lewis Decal and Signs, The Mag Shop,
Quality Home Repair and Hoosier.
Note: The field was made up of 5 cars from each of the 4 heats, 2
from each of the 2 B-Mains, the fastest qualifier who didn’t make
the show (Matt Sponaugle), the highest track points man who didn’t
make the show (Wayne Johnson), and promoter’s choice (Chuck Clise)
for a total of 27 cars.
Notes: Rodney Franklin was back driving a car for the first time in
3 years. Three years ago he had a back operation a quit racing. His
back is better and he is going to race again but not 3 nights a week
he says!! He is driving the Dirtek Race Cars House Car with the
number 5F.
Notes: Also back driving was Bob Salathe, former promoter at both
Cumberland and Bedford who has been driving a Corvette in SCCA Road
Racing recently. Bob was driving the car normally drivien by Chris
Haar. Bob told me that he has ordered a new Rocket and a new Malcuit
and will race a limited schedule mostly at Bedford next year.
Notes: Nolan Dalton driving the Jesse Gussman #85 hurt an engine
while finishing 2d in the 2d B-Main. Nolan started scratch on the
field and dropped out after a couple laps.
Notes: Greg Fetters was driving the #88 normally driven by Charlie
Shaffer. Seems Charlie had an accident on a mini-bike and broke an
ankle that has ended his season. He told me that he had a couple of
pins put in but he will be all right.
Notes: Spoke with several crews who finished the race and everyone
showed me smooth rear tires. In fact Stuhler’s crew changed rear
tires before they loaded the car because they didn’t want the tires
going down in the hauler.
Notes: Scott Haus looked like he had big problems on the last lap as
his car went up in smoke on the back straight but Scott told me that
he was lucky as it was only a power steering hose.
Notes: Matt Sponaugle got married on Friday and spent his honeymoon
racing at the Big Kahuna.
7th starting Shawn Bilger won the Limited Late Model Feature over
Rance Garlock, Tim Smith, Matt Parks and Shawn Claar. Bilger
inherited the lead when race long leader Justin Cann gave up almost
a straight lead when he went to the pits on lap 13.
Hans Stamberg won the 30 lap Street Stock feature over John
Whitfield, Dave Swanger, Dave Brown and Craig Wagaman. Stamberg
inherited the lead after two incidents where the leaders were spun
and the cars that spun them we all either damaged and couldn’t
continue or were sent to the rear. This race was marred when Mike
Harvey flipped wildly down the back straight and was hit by another
car while in the air. The car was destroyed but Mike was allright.

Banal’s tires last for Big Kahuna V win
By Matt Felten
Oct. 15, 2005
CUMBERLAND, Md. – Mark Banal made his tires last for a $10,000
victory in the Big Kahuna V on Saturday night at The Rock, Allegany
County Speedway.
The final half of the 88-lap Pepsi Super Late race turned into a
battle of tires and attrition as Banal wore the Hoosiers on the rear
of his car bald to get to the finish driving the Banal Racing No. T8
Rayburn.
Banal, of St. Clairsville, Ohio, took over the lead from Jeremy
Miller on lap 75 and held off Gary Stuhler in the closing laps.
“I knew Gary would be tough but he’d race me clean,” said an elated
Banal in victory lane. “This just feels really good to win a race
like this. I’ve been trying for years.
“Really, I’ve always had the opportunity,” Banal continued, and then
interrupted himself. “… I’m pretty close to having a flat (tire)
right now. If it doesn’t go flat by the time we get to the truck,
we’ll be lucky.
“I’ve had a quite a few championships and that makes you feel proud.
This is one of the biggest money races I’ve won and it feels great.”
Stuhler looked for room underneath Banal without success and chased
Banal on his bumper to the finish line. Scott Haus ended up third.
Dutch Davies and John Flinner finished fourth and fifth.
Jack Pencil was sixth. Bob Salathe finished seventh in his first
race of the year, and Rodney Franklin, who came out of retirement
for the race, was eighth. Greg Fetters finished ninth after starting
21st and Wayne Johnson was 10th after starting 26th.
Flat tires sent several cars to the pit area and to the back of the
field including Lynn Geisler, who was running fifth at the time,
Jeff Rine and Lance Elson.
Miller passed polesitter and leader D.J. Troutman following a lap-18
restart. Banal got by on the next lap. D.J. and Dave Troutman both
fell out of the race between laps 60 and 62.
Miller’s race ended on lap 75 when he appeared to lose a rear tire.
Banal, who stayed close to Miller throughout the race, took over the
lead with Stuhler and Haus behind.
Stuhler set the fast time in qualifying with a lap of 19.782
seconds. D.J. Troutman won the pole dash on Friday night.
The 35-lap Red Roof Inn Limited Late Model feature was won by Shawn
Bilger. He started seventh, and after a strong start, climbed up to
second in the first five laps.
Justin Kann led the race until he was sidelined on lap 13. Bilger
took over the lead with Rick Singleton and Rance Garlock second and
third.
Singleton fell out on lap 29 and Garlock was too far back to contend
with Bilger for the win. Tim Smith Jr. was third. Matt Parks charged
through the field after sliding backward on the start to finish
fourth. Shawn Claar had a strong run from 17th to finish fifth.
Hans Stamberg was the unlikely winner of the 30-lap Street Stock
feature marred by a scary crash and two incidents that track
officials deemed rough driving among the leaders.
The ugliness began on lap 17, when Mike Harvey flipped wildly down
the backstretch, then was tagged as he landed by an oncoming car.
Four other cars were collected and the red flag was brought out for
clean up. No drivers were seriously injured.
Race-long leader Mike Warrenfeltz and the second-place car of Harry
Smith led the field to green on the restart. Daniel Cornman, who
started 20th, was sitting third. In turn two, Cornman went for the
lead and contacted Warrenfeltz, who in turn hit Smith. Warrenfeltz
and Smith were forced out of the race and Cornman was penalized to
the rear of the field.
Greg Hauger assumed the lead with Davis Lipscombe in second. On the
penultimate lap, Lipscombe got into the back of Hauger, sending
Hauger spinning and the third-place car of Travis Calhoun spinning
in turn two. Lipscombe was penalized to the rear of the field.
Stamberg picked up the lead and held off John Whitfield by two car
lengths to the finish. Dave Swanger was able to dodge the madness
from 21st to finish third. Dave Brown and Craig Wagaman completed
the top five.
The scheduled Hobby Stock race was postponed to due to the lengthy
cautions and curfew. The race will be rescheduled.
The Western Maryland Nationals for Limited Late Models, Street
Stocks, Hobby Stocks and Classic Cars will wrap up the season on
Oct. 29-30. For more info, call the speedway office at (410)

Troutman gets victory, championship at The Rock
By Matt Felten
Sept. 11, 2005
CUMBERLAND, Md. – Dave Troutman’s fourth win of the season brought him a long-awaited track championship at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway on Sunday night.
Troutman trailed Wayne Johnson by 20 points but ran a trouble-free race from the pole and led every lap of the Pepsi Super Late Model race. Johnson finished fifth.
The regular season came to a close with other firsts: a first-career win for Jimmy Iser Jr. in the Street Stocks and a first track championship for Daniel Cornman. Mike Duck wrapped up his second-straight Hobby Stock title with another victory.
For Johnson, his season was highlighted by two wins after a victory drought of nearly a decade at The Rock. But it came to a close with another runner-up finish for the title, this time by 20 points to Troutman, when the checkered flag dropped.
Troutman won three of the last four races to earn the title for the Budweiser-Price Beer Distributors team. He celebrated with family and crew members--and a little Budweiser, too--in victory lane.
“I guess it’s been six years since we were after the point chase here,” said Troutman. “We finally got it.”
Dave and D.J. Troutman started from the front row, with Dave Troutman taking off into the lead at the start. Jack Pencil moved in to second and D.J. Troutman fell in behind. Gary Stuhler and Johnson ran fourth and fifth.
Pencil was able to close in by a few car lengths with five laps complete. Troutman never let him get any closer. Through four cautions, Troutman was in control. He pulled ahead of Pencil in the final two laps by 10 car lengths and won by nearly two seconds.
Pencil, D.J. Troutman, Stuhler and Johnson completed the top five.
Iser started third and moved up to second in the opening laps of the 16-lap Street Stock race. He took the lead from Kerry Molovich going into turn three of lap four. Daniel Cornman, who had already wrapped up the championship before the race started, followed Iser to second.
After a restart on lap seven, John Whitfield took second from Cornman. Cornman fought back to second on lap eight and closed in on Iser.
When the caution came out again on lap 12, Cornman took the lead away on lap 13, but Iser came back strong on lap 14. Iser drove hard underneath Cornman exiting turn four to recapture the lead. Whitfield followed Iser to second.
Iser won by just over two car lengths over Whitfield, Cornman, Molovich and David Whetstone.
Duck started seventh and put himself in position to clinch the championship early in the race. When the top contender, Jerry Robinson, fell out on lap 10, Duck had the championship in hand and set out to earn his fifth win.
Duck took second from Marcus VanMeter after a restart on lap 10, and then passed leader Travis Stickley after another restart on lap 12.
Duck led VanMeter to the finish line by a car length. Stickley ended up third. Terry Norris and Steve Fadley finished fourth and fifth.
Keith Gelwicks led the first four laps before developing a problem and retiring to the pits. Robinson was running in the top five until he was forced out of the race.
Three other events remain on the schedule for 2005. The final demolition derby will be held Saturday, Sept. 24. The Big Kahuna V will be held Oct. 13-15 and the third edition of the Western Maryland Nationals will be held on Oct. 29-30.

Parks wins
fourth, Kann new champ at The Rock
Aug. 28, 2005
By Matt Felten
CUMBERLAND, Md. – Matt Parks closed out the regular season for the
Oak Tree Inn Limited Late Models with a strong run to capture the
lead and win for the fourth time this season on Sunday night at The
Rock, Allegany County Speedway.
Parks also claimed the Super Sunday Shootout title but came up short
in the track championship, however. Justin Kann’s fourth-place
finish clinched the title, his first at The Rock.
“It feels good,” Kann said after the race. “I always wanted to get a
track championship. I finally got one.”
Kann finished the season with two wins, 10 top-five finishes and 13
top-10s. An 18th-place finish in July put Parks behind in the
championship, but he did everything right to close the gap in the
last two races.
He started seventh after winning two weeks ago. His No. 15 worked
superbly on the bottom of the track and he jumped to fourth on the
opening lap. Leader Randy Burkholder paced the field through the
first caution on lap nine.
On the restart Parks grabbed third from Dale Smith Jr. and took
second from Wayne Walls Jr. on the next lap. He caught and passed
Burkholder on lap 12 but a yellow put him back to second for the
restart.
Back under green Parks moved under Burkholder and went ahead on lap
14. Parks won by a straightaway with Burkholder, Walls, Kann and
Marvin Winters behind.
Kann and Brian Lowery won the second and third-place Super Sunday
Shootout trophies.
In other action, Mike Warrenfeltz won the Street Stock feature after
a violent crash claimed five cars on the opening lap. Mike Duck won
Hobby Stock race to deny Marcus VanMeter three wins in a row.
The start of 16-lap Street Stock race began with Warrenfeltz trying
to move around Greg Hauger and John Whitfield and abruptly ended
with eight cars involved in a crash on the backstretch.
Rick Cragan, who started fifth, flipped at least four times and Rick
Wright rolled over in the infield as cars were snarled three-wide
down the backstretch. Three other cars of Greg Smith, Justin Bonnett
and Adam Fulton were too damaged to continue. Others involved but
able to continue were David Whetstone, Kerry Molovich and point
leader Daniel Cornman.
The race resumed with Whitfield taking the lead and Warrenfeltz
taking second over Hauger. A caution for debris on the first lap led
to Warrenfeltz’ pass for the lead on Whitfield.
Warrenfeltz built a half-straightaway lead for the win, his second
of the season. Whitfield held off Hauger through the middle part of
the race and Travis Calhoun near the finish to get second. Calhoun,
Hauger and Molovich completed the top five.
Calhoun won the first-place Super Sunday Shootout trophy. Cornman
and Whitfield won the second and third-place trophies.
The 15-lap Hobby Stock race began with trouble on the first lap as
well. Polesitter Travis Kennell and Tom Warren tangled while
sixth-place starter Travis Stickley was forced into the outside wall
in turn two when the lead cars tried to go three-wide after the
green waved.
When the race resumed, Jerry Robinson held the lead over Duck and
VanMeter, who started seventh. Robinson held back Duck until lap
three, when Duck and VanMeter raced Robinson three-wide on the
frontstretch. Duck went ahead off of turn two and VanMeter followed
to second on lap four.
Duck and VanMeter raced bumper to bumper the rest of the way, with
Duck winning by a car length. Robinson, Terry Norris and Keith
Gelwicks rounded out the top five. Stickley and Warren recovered to
finish sixth and seventh.
Super Sunday Shootout trophies were won by Duck (first), VanMeter
(second) and Robinson (third).
The regular season ends for the Super Late Models, Street Stocks and
Hobby Stocks on Sunday, Sept. 11. Three other events remain on the
schedule for 2005. The final demolition will be held Saturday, Sept.
24. The Big Kahuna V will be held Oct. 13-15 and the third edition
of the Western Maryland Nationals will be held on Oct. 29-30.

Sponaugle wins first at The Rock
By Matt Felten
Aug. 20, 2005
CUMBERLAND, Md. – Matt Sponaugle was on the mark with the setup and drove a flawless race for his first Pepsi Super Late Model victory on Saturday night at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway.
Sponaugle put his Line-X No. 8 in victory lane over Wayne Johnson and Dave Troutman. Marcus VanMeter won the Hobby Stock race for the second straight week and Daniel Cornman came away with his sixth win of the season in the Street Stock race.
Sponaugle rolled off the grid from the pole and paced the field throughout the 25-lap race. Keith Jackson settled into second and was having his best run of the season chasing Sponaugle.
Jackson was successful at staying with Sponaugle through the halfway point. He closed in as the race neared the lap 20 mark and Johnson and Troutman closed the gap to put the top four cars within 10 car lengths of each other.
The only caution flag on lap 21 cost Jackson. On the restart, he slid sideways in turn two, and then saved the car from spinning down the backstretch. But Johnson and Troutman were able to get by.
Sponaugle capitalized on the commotion to drive away and win the race by seven car lengths. Behind Johnson and Troutman, Jackson was fourth and Chris Harr was fifth.
Johnson’s second-place finish ahead of Troutman assured him of a slight advantage in points heading into the Super Late Model regular season finale on Sept. 11.
Cornman’s sixth win came after an unlikely scenario unfolded ahead of him on lap 11 of the 16-lap feature. Running third behind leader Jimmy Iser Jr. and Patrick McDonough under caution, Cornman ended up the leader when the race resumed on lap 12.
First, McDonough was called for a false start and penalized two spots. Under the caution for that infraction, Iser was forced out of the race with an overheating problem.
Iser took the lead on the second lap from Cornman. McDonough followed for second on lap four and Cornman traded third with Greg Smith and recaptured the spot on lap nine.
The top three were bumper to bumper before the turn of events after the initial caution on lap 11. Cornman went on to win over Smith by six car lengths. Jim Sayler and McDonough crossed the finish line third and fourth.
Sayler and McDonough failed to participate in post-race technical inspection and were disqualified. The result moved Kerry Molovich to third, Rick Wright to fourth and David Whetstone to fifth in the final order.
VanMeter started seventh and used a restart on lap 12 to take the lead from Jerry Robinson. VanMeter went on to lead the final three laps of the 15-lap race and finished two car lengths ahead of Robinson.
Robinson led every lap until VanMeter positioned himself on the low side in turn three for the lead. VanMeter picked off the top four starting at lap four. He grabbed second from Travis Stickley on lap 10.
Stickley ran second for much of the race but was shuffled back late by Keith Gelwicks, Mike Duck and Phil Wilhelm. Duck started 22nd and charged into the top five after lap 12.
The first of three cautions came on lap eight at the expense of Shawn Dunmeyer, who met the turn three wall while running in the top five.
On Sunday, Aug. 28, the Street and Hobby Stocks, and 4-Cylinders join the Oak Tree Inn Limited Late Models. The race will end the regular season for the Limited Late Models. The regular season ends for the Super Late Models, Street Stocks and Hobby Stocks on Sunday, Sept. 11.

Parks,
Calhoun, VanMeter and Williams win at The Rock
By Matt Felten
Aug. 14, 2005
CUMBERLAND, Md. – Matt Parks became the first three-time winner in the
Oak Tree Inn Limited Late Models on Sunday at The Rock, Allegany
County Speedway.
Travis Calhoun won his first Street Stock feature of the season and
Marcus VanMeter won the Hobby Stock event for the second time. Vance
Williams was the 4-Cylinder winner.
Parks took the command of the race from the outside pole on the start
over Randy Burkholder. He led the entire 20 laps and finished six car
lengths ahead of Brian Lowery at the finish.
Lowery picked up second on the ninth lap, but Parks had already built
a half straightaway lead. A caution on lap 13 allowed the field to
catch up.
Parks got a strong restart and didn’t allow Lowery any closer than two
car lengths in the final five laps. Lowery’s finish matched his
season’s best.
Point leader Justin Kann maintained his hold on the championship with
a third-place finish. The championship will be decided on Sunday, Aug.
28 for the Limited Late Models.
Jim Frost finished a season-high fourth and Tim Smith Jr. was fifth.
Calhoun denied Daniel Cornman another trip to victory lane in the
closing laps of the 16-lap Street Stock feature. Calhoun picked up the
lead when leader Patrick McDonough and second-place Jim Sayler headed
for the pits on lap eight.
Calhoun held off Cornman through the final half of the race. Jimmy
Iser Jr. finished third but came up light at the scales. Rick Wright
was credited with third in the final rundown. Justin Bonnett and Buddy
Jones earned their first top-five finishes of the season with fourth
and fifth place.
McDonough had led the race from the start while Sayler worked around
Greg Hainsey and Calhoun to get second on lap four.
VanMeter led all 15 laps of the Hobby Stock race and won by five car
lengths over Mike Duck and Jerry Robinson.
VanMeter jumped ahead of Tom Warren, Chuck Weyant and Robinson under
green and led by as many as three seconds. A late caution on lap 13
for Warren closed the gap. VanMeter wasn’t challenged in the final two
laps.
Robinson took second on lap three and Duck grabbed third on the next
lap. The two battled side by side for second until lap six. Duck
eventually took over second in the final laps.
Weyant ended up fourth and Keith Gelwicks was fifth.
Vance Williams won the 4-Cylinder feature over Mike Hawbaker.
The Pepsi Super Late Models return this Saturday, Aug. 20 with the
Hobby Stocks and Street Stocks. On Aug. 28, the Street and Hobby
Stocks, and 4-Cylinders join the Limited Late Models. The regular
season ends for the Super Late Models, Street Stocks and Hobby Stocks
on Sunday, Sept. 11.

Aug. 6, 2005
CUMBERLAND, Md. – Dave Troutman drove away with the Dwane Shultz Memorial for his second straight win on Saturday night at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway.
Troutman won $2,000 after leading the final 21 laps in the 40-lap Pepsi Super Late Model race. Travis Stickley won for the second time in the Hobby Stocks and Bill Brown Sr. was back in victory lane at the conclusion of the Classic Car race.
Troutman started fifth and jumped to third on the opening lap. Keith Jackson
