FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

STUHLER WINS BEDFORD 55 LAPPER

By Dave Harclerode

BEDFORD, PA - A great crowd was on hand Friday night for Bedford Speedway's annual Labor Day 55, and the final racing event of the year was a good one. Gary Stuhler, a dominant force at any racetrack, ran flawlessly all night to win the $ 5,000 in the Super Late Model 55 lap special. Tim Smith, Jr. won his third Limited Late Model win of the season, padding his all-time Limited Late Model feature win lead with 17 total. Ashley Barrett won his third feature win of the year in the Street Stock division, and Shawn Wyles picked up his third win of the season in the Cruiser Hobby Stocks.

Gary Stuhler has reached a point in his career where he's expected to win, no matter what the circumstances are. Many fans remember how Gary picked apart the competition at the speedway in the nineties, and although he's now an infrequent visitor, Gary still performs well with every visit. Friday night was typical Gary Stuhler on Bedford's big 5/8 mile track. Starting fifth in his heat, he worked the outside groove in turns one and two to charge to the front for the win. With what appeared to be a stroke of bad luck, Gary had to start ninth in the feature event after pulling the highest pill in Bedford's fan friendly pill re-draw system. The racetrack was in great shape, and it only took 16 laps for Gary and his new #90 racer to take the lead and earn his 24th career win at the track. It took two attempts to get the 28 car field rolling. The first attempt ended the evening for first time visitor Troy Miller, Chad McClellan, Chris Harr, and Larry Wright. The second attempt saw the front row of Jack Pencil and Eric Zembower get together on the frontstretch, with Zembower spinning and collecting several cars. The race had to be red flagged as the entire track was blocked. Zembower was the only car that retired after the wreck. The race finally got under way, and Waylon Wagner snagged the lead from Pencil and paced the field. Stuhler was charging through the field, with 14th starting Scott Haus in his wake. By lap 15, Wagner held a slim lead over 7th starting Jeremy Miller, with Stuhler knocking on the door. Going into turn three, the trio was three wide, with Stuhler on the outside. Gary powered his way into the lead, and Wagner began to fade. Wagner would eventually drop from the race after the fuel stop with an apparent transmission problem. The second half of the race after the fuel stop saw Stuhler maintaining a marginal lead over Scott Haus. Scott Rhodes was also plotting his bid for a win, coming from 11th to third, and getting faster with each lap. A late race caution involving Nick Dickson, Dave Hoover, Travis Dillman, Shane Beegle, Ron Delano, and others brought another red flag out due to a blocked track. This stop in the action appeared to hurt Rhodes' charge, as there just wasn't enough time to get rolling like he was prior to the red flag. When action resumed, Stuhler held off everything and anything Haus had for him, and at the finish it was Stuhler, Haus, Rhodes, Jeremy Miller, and Jack Pencil. DJ Troutman finished sixth, followed by Jeff Rine, Wayne Johnson, Rodney Sweitzer, and Andy Martz. Rine, Stuhler, and Miller won the qualifying events.

Scott Rhodes claimed his second career Super Late Model Track Championship. Scott had enough points to be named Champion before the evening's events even started.

The Limited Late Model division points title chase was close coming into this final points race. Matt Parks held a slim lead over Craig Perigo, and neither driver has ever earned a championship at the speedway. Perigo got to work early, chipping away at Park's lead by winning his heat and pulling the best pill on the re-draw which put him on the pole for the feature. Tim Smith, Jr. immediately grabbed the lead at the drop of the green, and Perigo ran a close second. Meanwhile, Parks had to feel pressure as he only had a 25 point lead going into the feature (25 points equals five positions), and he was starting eighth. Parks worked his way up to fifth, which was close enough to Perigo to maintain a five point lead. Whether Perigo was aware of this or not is unknown, but Perigo got a great run off of turn two and drove deep into the third turn. So deep that he made hard contact with the outside retaining wall. Perigo's #1a climbed the wall and straddled it, rolling all the way to turn 4 before coming to a rest. Remarkably, Perigo looked as if he would be able to continue after a pair of wreckers pulled him off the wall, but a broken j-bar ended his night. When racing resumed, Smith had his hands full with last year's champ Mike Shoemaker. Smith held on and won over Shoemaker, Shawn Claar, Parks, and Mr. Excitement Andy Fries, in his first run at Bedford in a Limited Late Model. Rounding out the top ten was Mike Altobelli, Jr., John Bookwalter, Howie Bussard, George Beckett, and Rick Singleton. Perigo and Beckett won the heats, and Parks was crowned the 2005 Champion.

The Street Stock division also had a tight point battle going on between Bob Jay and last year's champ Jim Sayler. Jay held a slim 25 point lead which shrunk to 20 after the heat events. Sayler's cause seemed to be lost in the feature though, when his teammate Patrick McDonough and Dave Korlewitz made hard contact in turn four. McDonough's car went airborne then spun, collecting Sayler. Sayler suffered minor damage, and was able to continue, as was McDonough. Meanwhile, Ashley Barrett was the star of the race, grabbing the top spot and leading in commanding fashion - a rarity in the division. The race was riddled with cautions, and on one re-start, Dave Korlewitz was going to be penalized after the race for passing before the starting cone. This will become a big part of the Championship story, or so it would seem. All Bob Jay had to do was finish no worse than three spots behind Sayler and the 2005 Championship was his. Unfortunately, Jay was involved in a backstretch crash and his car suffered race ending damage. Jim Sayler suffered a flat tire in the same incident, and went to the tail again. Seven cars remained on the track, and Sayler managed to get to the fourth position at the checkered, which would've meant he and Jay were tied for the Championship title. However, Dave Korlewitz finished third, and after being docked one position for the early race jump, Sayler was scored third, giving him the championship by a mere five points. Please note, the tie breaker for points is feature wins. Sayler had five this season, and Jay had three. So even without the Korlewitz penalty, Sayler would've been crowned Champion based on the tie breaker. Ashley Barrett, who had a great second half of the season, won easily over Kerry Molovich. The race was scored with Sayler third and Korlewitz fourth as previously mentioned, and Donald Wyles came home fifth. Molovich and Korlewitz won the heat races.

Shawn Wyles capped off his season with back to back wins in the Cruiser Hobby Stock division, a.k.a. the "thunderin' herd" as coined by announcer Mike Sotosky. Wyles and Brian Weyandt, Jr. ran side by side for the last five laps of the race, trading paint with each other and occasionally the frontstretch wall. Wyles won by just a few feet over Weyandt, Jr. with Travis Stickley finishing a close third, and Lincoln Ritchey and AJ Foor completing the top five. Chuck Weyant finished 9th, giving him a 60 point lead over Weyandt, Jr. to take his first ever Track Championship. Ritchey, Foor, and Stickley won the heat events.

The two day race scheduled for late September has been canceled so track crews can get an early jump on improvements to the track surface. Several fund raising events are being planned by DKM, Inc. and the Bedford Fairboard, and everyone should be able to look forward to a brand new clay surface in '06.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

HAUS COMES FROM LAST PLACE TO TAKE PHOTO FINISH WIN AT BEDFORD

By Dave Harclerode

BEDFORD, PA -  A superb track surface gave fans a chance to see some great racing Friday night at the Bedford Speedway.  Overcast skies played a hand in the great track, and Hamburg, Pa's Scott Haus used every inch of the racey surface to take an incredible win in the Interstate NAPA Super Late Model division.  Craig Perigo chipped away at Matt Parks' point lead by winning the Limited Late Model feature, and Ashley Barrett scored his second win of the season in a thrilling TC Race Cars Street Stock race.  Cruiser-Hobby Stock action was bumper to bumper, and Shawn Wyles scored his second win of the season.

Scott Haus' evening started off on the wrong foot.  After looking blazing fast in warm ups, Haus met the turn two wall in his heat, leaving his car in a sorry state.  Instead of giving up, Scott pulled his backup car out of the trailer and tagged onto the end of the feature.  The feature event got under way without a glitch, and pole sitter Donnie Farling gave up the lead on the first lap to Nick Dickson.  Haus immediately started picking off cars, some low, some high, and by the end of the second lap fans could tell they might witness something special.  On lap 3, Chuck LaSalle and another car made contact and LaSalle pummeled the turn 3 wall head on.  LaSalle was a little groggy after the hit, and was checked out by the Southern Cove Ambulance crew.  During the caution, race leader Nick Dickson went pitside with fuel pump problems, handing the lead to Rodney Sweitzer.  Jack Pencil, who was in the top five, also went pitside with a major water leak.  Now the stage was set, 22 laps for Haus to come to the front from about the 15th spot.  Lap after lap it was one, two, and sometimes even three cars a lap.  By the time there was 10 laps to go, Haus fourth behind Sweitzer, Scott Rhodes, and Jeff Rine.  Haus disposed of Rine easily and got by Rhodes on the highside in turn three with about five to go.  Rodney Sweitzer was hooked up, and it appeared Haus' great run had come to an end.  However, coming to the white flag, Haus got a great run off of turn four and pulled within a car length.  Three lapped cars were battling for position, and going into turn three on the last lap Sweitzer had to make a decision.  Rodney decided to stay low, and Haus went for it all on the highside, throttle hammered.  Haus nearly clipped the wall coming onto the frontstretch, and the drag race to the checkered was on.  At the finish line is was Haus over Sweitzer by a mere 2 feet.  Point leader Scott Rhodes held on for third, Jeff Rine fourth, and Donnie Farling had a season best fifth.  Sixth through tenth went to Wayne Johnson, Larry Wright, Greg Fetters, Eric Zembower, and Andy Martz.  The win was Haus' 32nd career victory at the Speedway, padding his all time Late Model win lead over Gary Stuhler.

Sweitzer, Dickson, and Farling won the heat events.

The Limited Late Model point race is a tight one, with Matt Parks maintaining a slim lead over Craig Perigo.  Perigo chipped away at that lead Friday by winning his heat and taking the feature to score the maximum amount of points.  Perigo started 2nd in the feature, and Parks started third.  The pair got by pole sitter Howie Bussard, and the race was on.  Parks dogged Perigo for a several laps, many times running side by side until Parks lost the handle on his #15, spinning in turn four.  Perigo now had to deal with Super Late Model regular DJ Troutman.  Troutman applied the pressure, but Perigo hung on for the win.  It was Troutman, Mike Shoemaker, Shawn Claar, and George Beckett completing the top five.  Sixth through tenth was Tim Smith, Jr., Mike Altobelli, Jr., Matt Parks, John Bookwalter, and Howie Bussard.

Heats went to Bookwalter and Perigo.

For the past couple years, the TC Race Cars Street Stock racing at Bedford has been phenomenal.  Friday was no different.  The top four cars crossed the checkered in a bunch so tight you could've thrown a blanket over them.  Ashley Barrett came from the third starting spot to take the win over Jim Sayler, Dave Korlewitz, Patrick McDonough, and Bob Jay.  McDonough passed Jay on the last lap before becoming part of the four-pak that crossed the finish line so close.  Greg Cornell, Michael Stiffler, Terry Wyles, Jerry Merrits, and Travis Calhoun completed the top ten.

Korlewitz and McDonough were the heat event winners.

The Cruiser-Hobby Stocks, a.k.a. "The Thunderin' Herd" put on a great show and Woodbury, Pa's Shawn Wyles was a happy guy in the end.  Wyles won the race over Bill Replogle.  Replogle raced the Pork Sell owned number 65, usually driven by Barry Weyandt.  Brian Weyandt, Jr finished third, followed by Lincoln Ritchey and Brandon LaSalle.  It was not a good night for point leader Chuck Weyant.  Chuck was involved in a scary frontstretch crash with the lapped car of Ricky Mock.  Weyant's car appeared to be destroyed.

Bedford held it's annual Powder Puff Friday, and Cheryl Howsare held off a hard charging Mandy Jay to take the victory.  Howsare announced her retirement from racing in her victory lane interview.  She went 19 for 19 at various area racetracks over the years.  She never lost once.  Tammy Smith finished third, followed by Cindy Shaulis and Jackie Claycomb.  There were 16 drivers in the event.

This Friday is a regular four division show consisting of Super Late Models, Limited Lates, Street Stocks, and Cruiser Hobby Stocks.  Coming Friday, Sept. 2nd is the annual Labor Day 55 race, which will pay $5,000 to the winner, and $300 to start the race.  The race will be a qualifier for the Paul Long $10,000 to win race at Selinsgrove on Sunday, Sept. 4th.  The raindate for the Bedford race will be Monday, Sept. 5th.  The Limited Late Models, Street Stocks, and Cruiser-Hobby Stocks will also be on hand the race will be the final points night for all divisions.

AUGUST 5, 2005

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

COWBOY JIM KENNEDY LASSOS BIG BEDFORD WIN

By Dave Harclerode

BEDFORD, PA -  The PA305 Sprint cars made their second visit to Bedford Speedway Friday night, and "Cowboy" Jim Kennedy made it a memorable night for all in attendance.  Kennedy stood on the throttle all race long, winning by a full straightaway.  Also on the event card was a special 30 lap "open rule" Street Stock race.  The race was dedicated to the late Walt Aikey, who was active with racing in the area for many years.  Competitors from other tracks were invited to compete against the Bedford regulars, and the only rules were that the drivers adhered to their home track rules.  Bedford regular Jim Sayler picked up his 5th win of the season over Ashley Barrett.  Matt Parks earned his first ever Bedford Speedway victory in the Limited Late Models, and Lincoln Ritchey snared his 3rd win of the season in the Cruiser-Hobby Stocks.

Whether he knew it or not, Jim Kennedy had many fans at Bedford Speedway Friday night for the PA305 Sprint Car race.  He lives 8 miles from the speedway.  He's raced on and off at the track for well over 30 years.  He's 69 years old!  It's no surprise that every single person at the historic fairgrounds gave Jim a standing ovation for several minutes after his victory.  For those who attend Bedford regularly, this truly was a site to see.  Fans in the main grandstands, in the two sets of wooden bleachers, on the hill in turn 4, and the entire backstretch reserved parking spot area was cheering wildly for "The Cowboy".  Deemed an underdog solely on his age, most Bedford fans didn't realize that this man has been on a tear this season with the PA305 Sprint Car organization.  They race at several tracks around the state, and the win Friday night was Jim's fourth this season.  One at Lincoln Speedway, two at Hesston, and now one at Bedford.  Kennedy started the 20 lap feature in the fourth spot, and pole sitter Gary Heckman set the pace for the first half of the race.  With most of the field appearing to drive conservatively on bottom, Kennedy drove like a man on a mission on the highside.  It didn't take long for him to work past Nathan Gramley and second place starter Dusty Shatzer, but Heckman was running strong and appeared to have control of the race.  Kennedy gained a few car lengths each lap, and by lap 8 he was knocking on the door.  Then, with 11 laps to go, Kennedy drove into turn 3 deep and high, and there was nothing Heckman could do but watch his lead fall to the wayside.  This was the point where the entire crowd went bezerk, and lasted until well after the checkered fell.  Shortly after the lead change, Heckman slowed with mechanical problems and went pitside.  Meanwhile, Gramley worked past Shatzer and found himself in second place.  But Kennedy had already checked out, winning by several seconds over Gramley, Shatzer, the May 6th winner Brent Comp, and Tommy Beavers.  Craig Folmar, Jim Travis, Jr., Rodney Peters, Joe Zap, and Cody Schmiedel completed the top ten.  Kennedy was literally speechless in his victory lane interview (overcome with joy), but did manage to yodel for the fans.

Shatzer and Gramley won the heat events.

The Walt Aikey Memorial 30 lap Street Stock feature was exactly what everyone expected - a great race.  Kerry Molovich set the pace for the first two laps until last week's winner Ashley Barrett used a turn 3 pass on the topside to take the top spot.  Pre-race favorite Bob Jay was a pre-race favorite, but damage sustained in a heat race accident left Jay's car vulnerable for the feature, and within a few laps Jay found himself pitside without a right rear wheel, leaving his brakes on the track in the process.  Meanwhile, Barrett held a comfortable lead, with each lap led as important as the next since every lap meant an increased pay day do to sponsored lap money.  Jim Sayler started seventh, and was putting a charge on to the front.  Sayler has proven he's the man to beat this season, and by lap 22 he was working his way past Barrett.  A clean pass was made, and Sayler led the rest of the event, claiming the $600 winner's purse and 8 laps worth of lap money.  Barrett held on for a close second, and also had a nice payday with 20 laps worth of lap money added to his winnings.  Molovich finished third, Donald Wyles fourth, and Dave Korlewitz fifth.  Terry Wagner finished sixth, and was the top non-Bedford regular to finish.  Jeff Detweiler, Shane Molovich, Greg Hauger, and Rick Cragan, Jr. completed the top ten.

Terry Wyles, Kerry Molovich, and Sayler won the qualifying events.

The highlight of the Limited Late Model season has been the points battle.  Craig Perigo came into the night's events with a slim point lead over Matt Parks, so Parks did what he had to do.  He won the feature event, and combined with Perigo's 8th place finish, re-claimed the point lead.  Parks, Perigo, and Mike Shoemaker have swapped the point lead several times this season, and more than likely the champion won't be decided until the very last point race in September.  Andy Teno scored his best finish of the season finishing second, and likewise with Shawn Claar in third.  Shoemaker, and John Hedge completed the top five.  Sixth through tenth was Robbie Black, fair race winner George Beckett, Perigo, Mike Altobelli, Jr., and Matt Sponaugle.

Hedge and Claar won the heats.

Lincoln Ritchey started on the pole and led flag to flag in the Cruiser Hobby Stock feature.  Typically, when you hear a driver won from the pole one usually would think the race was boring.  Not the case with this division.  There was action all over the track, and Ritchey was just fortunate to not be in the melee that followed him.  Point leader Chuck Weyant finished inches behind Ritchey, and Barry Weyandt and Devin Weyandt also finished nose to tail behind them.  Greg Imler scored a season best fifth place finish.  AJ Foor, Kevin Bilger, Mark Shope, Mike Moore, and Curtis Heath completed the top ten.

Shope, Ritchey, and Weyant won the heat events.

This Friday will be a regular 4 division show consisting of Super Late Models, Limited Late Models, Street Stocks and Cruiser Hobby Stocks.  There will also be kid bike races.

BEDFORD, PA - The Bedford Speedway dodged another bullet Friday night, when hard rain fell all over town except at the track.  The speedway received a small shower, delaying the show for about an hour.  A quarter mile away, the rain came down in buckets.  The annual Great Bedford Fair Race always has a capacity crowd, and no one left the stands disappointed.  DJ Troutman passed Jack Pencil to win his third career Bedford Super Late Model feature, and George Beckett held off a late race charge from Craig Perigo to win his first Limited Late Model feature at the speedway.  Weekly front runner Ashley Barrett won the Street Stock event, and point leader Chuck Weyant took the checkered first in the Cruiser Hobby Stocks.

DJ Troutman grabbed the lead early from pole sitter Jack Pencil, and maintained a moderate lead the entire race.  Pencil held on for second, and Eric Zembower finished a season best third.  Andy Martz continued his consistency with a fourth place finish, and Nick Dickson placed fifth.  Larry Wright, Rodney Sweitzer, Wayne Johnson, Chris Harr, and Scott Rhodes rounded out the top ten.  Rhodes, the current division point leader, suffered moderate damage in a skirmish involving Dave Troutman and Jeff Rine.  Rhodes never stopped on the track and maintained his position on the speedway, but the damage caused Rhodes to fade to tenth.  He still maintains a 145 point lead over Wayne Johnson.  Rine, Rhodes, and Martz won the heat events.

The fair race has seen it's share of first time winners in the past, and George Beckett added his name to the winners list in the Limited Late Model division.  A late race caution gave point leader Craig Perigo a shot at the lead, and Craig made a valiant effort, but Beckett was a man on a mission Friday night.  Following Beckett and Perigo was Robbie Black, Mike Shoemaker, and Matt Parks.  Sixth through tenth went to Tim Smith, Jr., Howie Bussard, Shawn Bilger, Brian Lowery, and Andy Teno.  Shoemaker and Black won the heats.

Ashley Barrett has been so close to a win this season in the Street Stocks he could taste it.  Ashley finally nabbed his first win of the season.  It didn't take long for Barrett to move from his fourth starting spot to the lead, and he won easily over Donald Wyles, Bobby Jay, Terry Wyles, and Travis Calhoun.  The next five went to Jim Sayler, Greg Cornell, Michael Stiffler, Rick Cragan, Jr., and Greg Hainsey.  Barrett and Sayler won the heats.

Chuck Weyant scored his first victory of the season in the Cruiser Hobby Stocks, and extended his point lead to 110 points over Brian Weyandt, Jr.  Brandon LaSalle took home a season best second, with Robert Weist, Mark Shope, and Shawn Wyles completing the top five.  Devin Weyandt, Lincoln Ritchey, and Wyles won the heat events.

The PA305 Sprint cars will be making an appearance this Friday at the Speedway.  They will be joined by the Limited Late Models, Street Stocks, and Cruiser Hobby Stocks.  The Street Stocks will be running the Walt Aikey Memorial open race, and the speedway will be honoring rules from various other tracks.  See the speedway's website for details at www.bedfordspeedway.com

JULY 15, 2005

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

RHODES, ALTOBELLI, JR., KORLEWITZ, AND STICKLEY EARN BEDFORD WINS

By Dave Harclerode

BEDFORD, PA - With remnants of Hurricane Dennis still showing it's ugly face, many area race fans thought the Bedford Speedway would be forced to cancel Friday night.  It practically rained everywhere in Bedford, except at the famed 5/8 mile historic oval.  With high humidity and good cloud cover, the racing surface retained moisture and was excellent all evening as Scott Rhodes decimated the entire Super Late Model field on his way to his second feature win of the season.  Mike Altobelli, Jr. fought off several competitors to take the 35 lap Limited Late Model Special, and Dave Korlewitz won his first ever Bedford Street Stock feature.  Also winning his first ever Bedford race was Travis Stickley in the Cruiser-Hobby Stock division.

Scott Rhodes inherited the Super Late Model point lead last week when Scott Haus was disqualified for intentionally ramming a competitor under caution.  Rhodes put an exclamation point on his point lead Friday by running away with the feature event in impressive fashion.  Rhodes put his familiar #83R out front on the very first lap, and was never challenged the entire race.  Last season's division Point Champ Jack Pencil worked his way from the sixth starting spot into a distant second, but luck was not on his side.  With ten laps to go, fifth place running Chuck LaSalle suffered a flat tire, bringing out the caution.  On the restart, there were 3 lapped cars between Rhodes and Pencil.  Pencil worked the high side of the track for two laps knocking off the lapped cars, but with eight laps to go Pencil got too high in turn three and smacked the outside retaining wall.  Pencil, who was getting married the following night, pulled his heavily damaged racer into the pits with disgust.  This caution put Larry Wright into second place, and there were no lapped cars between Larry and Rhodes on the restart.  Rhodes immediately drove off to a commanding lead, holding the point position all the way to the checkered.  Wright settled for second, Chris Harr third, last week's winner Wayne Johnson fourth, and Rodney Sweitzer fifth.  Pole sitter Devin Friese finished sixth, and Jeff Rine, Eric Zembower, TJ Wright, and Chuck Clise rounded out the top ten.  For the second week in a row, Brian Duffy ran his Limited Late Model in the Super Late Model division.  Although legal for the Limited division at other tracks, Brian's engine does not adhere to the Bedford Limited rules.  Duffy ran in the top ten all race until a flat tire sent him to the tail.  Duffy rallied back for a twelfth place finish.  Duffy also won his heat event, and posted a top 10 finish last week.

Duffy, Chuck LaSalle, and Rodney Sweitzer won the heat events.

Mike Altobelli, Jr. has a habit of winning Bedford's increased purse races.  He did it again Friday, winning $1,000 in the 35 lap Limited Late Model Championship.  The win didn't come easy though.  Altobelli was hounded by Matt Parks lap after lap early in the race, until Parks appeared to have used up his tires.  Half way through, Parks began to fade and crowd favorite Craig Perigo began his march to the front.  Perigo watched early on as Parks tried repeatedly to take the lead on the bottom of the track.  So Perigo ran the top, pulling alongside Altobelli several times.  Perigo nearly completed the pass with two to go, but Altobelli, Jr. hung on and narrowly took the win, his second of the season.  Perigo, Robbie Black (from the 9th starting spot), Matt Parks, and Matt Sponaugle completed the top five.  Sixth through tenth went to Tim Smith, Jr., Rance Garlock, Shawn Claar, Howie Bussard, and Terry Flaherty.  Mike Shoemaker, last year's division champ and point leader coming into the night, had a rough evening.  Shoemaker bounced off the frontstretch wall in his heat race, which broke his right rear wheel.  When he set his car to take on turn one, the car spun and hit the outside wall violently.  Shoemaker was transported to Bedford Hospital to get checked out for a probable concussion.

Matt Sponaugle and Matt Parks won the qualifying events.

The Bedford Street Stock division is a crowd favorite for it's bumper to bumper, door handle to door handle action.  Unfortunately, when dirt race cars run that close, there's bound to be accidents.  Dave Korlewitz, in only his third start ever at the speedway, worked lap after lap to get by race leader Ashley Barrett.  You could've thrown a blanket over Barrett, Korlewitz, and third place running Bob Jay the entire race.  The crowd was going crazy, and with two to go, Korlewitz and Barrett made contact in turn three, with Barrett losing the handle.  Track officials deemed the incident an accident, and Korlewitz took the first position with Barrett going to the tail.  Korlewitz hung on for his first ever victory at the track, and was followed by Bob Jay, Greg Cornell, Donald Wyles, and Travis Calhoun.  Completing the top ten was Shane Molovich, Ashley Barrett, Steve Lowery, Michael Stiffler, and Matt Sala.

Barrett and Rick Cragan, Jr. won the heats.

The Cruiser Hobby Stock division is another class that is pleasing to watch for their close racing action.  Young Travis Stickley showed a few division veterans the fast way around, taking his first ever win at the track.  Lincoln Ritchey finished a close second, followed by point leader Chuck Weyant, Brian Weyandt, Jr., and Shawn Wyles.  Promoter JR Keifer stuck to his guns about intentionally ramming another car under caution, and former champ Terry Norris received a 2 race suspension for a caution flag incident during his heat race.

Brian Weyandt, Jr., Chuck Weyant, and Stickley won the heat races.

Their will be no racing at the Bedford Speedway next week due to fair week preparation, but the four divisions will be back in action for one of the most popular races on the schedule, the Great Bedford Fair Stock Car Championship on Friday, July 29th.

JULY 11, 2005

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

                                                                            WAYNE JOHNSON WINS THRILLER

By Dave Harclerode

BEDFORD, PA - A hard rain washed out the Bedford Speedway on Friday, but luckily there was a pre-planned Sunday raindate. Although, for 3 of the 4 divisional point leaders it would have been better had there not been a raindate. Super Late model point leader Scott Haus was entangled in controversy on and off the track, Limited Late point leader Mike Shoemaker puffed an engine in his heat, and Street Stock leader Bob Jay wasn’t able to finish the feature race. On a lighter note, Wayne Johnson picked up his third career Super Late Model win, Tim Smith, Jr. won the Limited Late Model feature, Jim Sayler near continued his near unbeatable season with a Street Stock win, and Brian Weyandt, Jr. won in the Cruiser Hobby Stock division.

Wayne Johnson was as happy as could be in victory lane after winning the Super Late Model feature, and Scott Haus was feeling the exact opposite. Haus started on the pole, and appeared to have the 25 lap feature event in hand. However, third starting Johnson had worked his way into second and was gaining on Haus lap after lap. With about five laps to go, Johnson got a good run off of turn two and the pair ran wheel to wheel down the back chute. As they entered turn three, the two cars were still in a dead heat, side by side as they broadslided deep into the corner. The pair touched and both started to spin. Haus went all the way around, and Johnson was able to pull out of the spin and continue without stopping. Track officials deemed the mishap a racing accident, with neither driver receiving blame. Per Speedway rules, Johnson retained his position and Haus was sent to the tail for spinning. Haus let Johnson know he was unhappy during the caution laps, and again in victory lane. Amidst all of the excitement, Larry Wright’s charge to the front was a little overshadowed. Wright started seventh, and got faster each lap. Wright made up to second place by the time they hit the checkered. Scott Rhodes finished third, Chris Harr fourth, and Jack Pencil fifth. Sixth through tenth was DJ Troutman, Chuck LaSalle, Brian Duffy, Eric Zembower, and Andy Martz.

Shane Beegle, Rhodes, and Harr won the qualifying events.

Tim Smith, Jr. has won more Limited Late Model features than anyone at Bedford Speedway - ever. But the 2005 season has been a struggle for the former division Champion. Over the last few weeks though, you could tell Tim was getting faster and faster. Luck was starting to ride his shoulder too, with no DNF's. Finally, Tim broke the ice this season with convincing win Sunday. Craig Perigo drove the wheels off his car to come from 8th to 2nd, and pole sitter Matt Parks finished a strong third. Shawn Claar finished 4th, and George Beckett 5th.

Parks and Shawn Bilger won the heats.

Jim Sayler came out of nowhere last season to claim the Street Stock title. Jim took one step closer to repeating his title by taking the point lead from perennial front runner and former champ Bob Jay. Third starting Sayler snagged the lead from Dave Korlewitz and never looked back, claiming his 4th win of the season. Ashley Barrett knocked on the door, but had to settle for second. Korlewitz, in only his second visit to Bedford, scored an impressive third. Rick Cragan, Jr. finished 4th, and Donald Wyles fifth.

Heat winners were Kerry Molovich and Sayler.

Brian Weyandt, Jr. held the top five cars at bay, winning his second feature of the season. Weyandt, Jr., Shawn Wyles, Lincoln Ritchey, Travis Stickley, and Chuck Weyant ran nose to tail, practically touching the entire race. Several attempts were made for the lead by both Wyles and Ritchey, but in the end it was Weyandt, Jr, Wyles, Ritchey, Stickley, and Weyant.

Ritchey, Weyant, and Mike Duck won the heats.

This Friday will be a $1,000 to win Limited Late Model 30 lap race, with the Super Late Models, Street Stocks, and Cruiser Hobby Stocks also on hand.

JULY 04, 2005

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

SCOTT RHODES DOMINATES BEDFORD 35 LAPPER

By Dave Harclerode

BEDFORD, PA - Scott Rhodes visited Bedford Speedway's victory lane for the first time this season Sunday night, winning $2,500 in the Firecracker 35 PA State Late Model Invitational.  Matt Sponaugle ended up the winner in the Limited Late Model division, in what was yet another wild post race scramble.  Bob Jay maintained his slim point lead in the Street Stock Division with a feature win, and Lincoln Ritchey earned his second win of the season in the Cruiser-Hobby Stocks.

Scott Rhodes has amassed several Bedford trophies over the last three years.  Ten to be exact, and fifteen in his career.  But things just weren't working in Scott's favor so far in 2005.  However, over the last few weeks you could tell the familiar orange # 83R was getting faster each outing, and fans knew a win was inevitable.  And it was.  Rhodes took a commanding lead from the drop of the green, maintaining a safe cushion over second place finisher Nick Dickson all race.  Point leader Scotty Haus picked off a car about every ten laps to secure the third spot, and Chris Harr and Chuck LaSalle finished fourth and fifth.  First timer Mitch Hack ran an impressive race to nail down sixth, and Rodney Sweitzer, Larry Wright, Wayne Johnson, and Jack Pencil completed the top ten.  Last week's feature winner Jeff Rine decimated an engine in warm ups, and sat the bench the rest of the night.  Regional Superstar Gary Stuhler was on hand, but broke while running second in his heat.  Stuhler also remained on the sidelines the rest of night.

Heat winners were Haus, Dickson, and Harr.

Al Shawver appeared to have his first ever Bedford win wrapped up in the Limited Late model feature.  Shawver smoked the field, winning easily over Matt Sponaugle.  However... Shawver refused a post race tech inspection, automatically disqualifying him and handing the win to Sponaugle.  Tim Smith, Jr. finished second, with Matt Parks, point leader Mike Shoemaker, and former e-mod standout Andy Teno finishing the top five.  Sixth through tenth went to Rance Garlock, Craig Perigo, Mike Altobelli, Jr., first timer Tyler Hershey, and Howie Bussard.

Shoemaker, Smith, and Altobelli won the heat events.

Someone finally broke Jim Sayler's win streak in the Street Stock division.  Sayler, who has won the last three events, Bob Jay, Ashley Barrett, and newcomer Dave Korlewitz put on a whale of a show at the front.  Korlewitz held the point for awhile, until Barrett snatched the top spot away half way through the event.  Bob Jay also worked past Korlewitz, and hounded Barrett lap after lap.  Jay finally got position on Barrett in turn three, taking the lead and the win.  Barrett and Korlewitz held on for second and third, and Sayler took home fourth.  Greg Hainsey captured the fifth spot, after a two week absence, and Terry Wyles finished sixth.  Travis Calhoun, Jeff Detwiler, Patrick McDonough, and Michael Stiffler rounded out the top ten.

Korlewitz and Calhoun won the heat events.

Last week, Lincoln Ritchey appeared to win the Cruiser Hobby Stock feature event.  But he was disqualified after the race for having an illegal suspension modification.  Having a good attitude towards his fans and the speedway, Ritchey made repairs to the suspension, came back this week and drove straight to the front from his fifth starting spot.  Ritchey drove around many of the divisions top guns, including pole sitter Brian Weyandt, Jr. and teammate Shawn Wyles.  Although close at the end, Ritchey won comfortably over occasional Bedford visitor Jerry Robinson, and point leader Chuck Weyant, Mike Duck, and Weyandt, Jr.  Devin Weyandt, Derek Hinish, Brandon Hoover, Greg Imler, and Robert Weist completed the top ten.  Bedford veteran Barry Weyandt pounded the 4th turn wall late in the feature event, and thankfully was uninjured.

Chuck Weyant, Duck, and Brian Weyandt, Jr. won the heats.

This Friday night will be a regular 4 division show consisting of the Interstate NAPA Super Late Models, Limited Late Models, TC Race Cars Street Stocks, and the Cruiser-Hobby Stocks.  Gates open at 5pm with hot laps at 7pm.

JUNE 24, 2005

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

RINE, SHOEMAKER, SAYLER, AND WYLES SCORE BEDFORD WINS

By Dave Harclerode

BEDFORD, PA - Jeff Rine topped a very talented Super Late Model field to score his second win of the season.  Mike Shoemaker extended his point lead with a win in the Limited Late Models, and Jim Sayler proved he's top dog in the Street Stocks with his third win of the year.  Shawn Wyles scored his first win of the season in the Cruiser Hobby Stocks.

In Super Late Model action, Jeff Rine put his Elbin family owned # 92 out front early, and set a blistering pace all race long.  Second generation driver Andy Martz ran the super late model race of his career, chasing Rine all night in the second position.  The real story of this race was for the third position.  Jack Pencil, Scott Haus, and Scott Rhodes looked fast early, changing positions many times.  Pencil appeared to have the third spot locked up, but veteran driver Larry Wright was on the move from 8th spot.  Wright caught the trio racing for third with 10 to go, and immediately moved to the top side.  Rhodes was the first to fall, then Haus, and with two to go Wright worked past Pencil for third.  Pencil finished the race in fourth, with Haus fifth.  Rodney Sweitzer, Wayne Johnson, Scott Rhodes, Chuck LaSalle, and Eric Zembower completed the top 10.

Greg Fetters, Scott Haus, and Chris Harr won the heat events.

Mike Shoemaker put his white and orange # 8 in victory lane for the second week in a row in the Limited Late Model division.  Shoemaker led the entire distance, but it wasn't a run away win.  Mike Altobelli, Jr. stayed glued to his bumper for the whole race, taking several looks to the low side without success.  All-time Limited Late Model winner Tim Smith, Jr., who has some real bad luck this season, finally go the monkey off his back with a solid third place finish.  Craig Perigo finished fourth, and Coleby Frye fifth.  Sixth through tenth was Shane Bilger, Rance Garlock, George Beckett, John Hedge, and Andy Teno.

Heats went to Frye and Shoemaker.

Bob Jay and Jim Sayler are in one whale of a tight points battle for first and second in the Street Stock division, and Friday's racing action proved why.  Jay topped Sayler by one position in heat race action, and Sayler finished first in the feature, with Bob Jay finishing a close second.  Rick Cragan, Jr., Travis Calhoun, and Donald Wyles completed the top five.  Ashley Barrett dropped out of the race while running second.

Heat winners were Barrett and Jay.

Lincoln Ritchey appeared to win his second feature of the season in the Cruiser-Hobby Stock division, but a post race tech inspection send Ritchey home soured by a disqualification.  The DQ gave the win to Ritchey's teammate Shawn Wyles.  Barry Weyandt, point leader Chuck Weyant, and Brian Weyandt, Jr. completed the top five.

Barry Weyandt, Brian Weyandt, Jr., and Ritchey won the heat events.

There will be no racing action at the speedway this coming Friday, but a great night of racing is on tap for Sunday, July 3rd.  The Firecracker 35 PA State Late Model Invitational will pay $ 2,500 to win, and $ 200 to start.  Tow money will be paid to non-qualifiers.  The Limited Late Models, Street Stocks, and Cruiser Hobby Stocks will also be on hand.  Gates open at 4pm, with hot laps at 7pm, and racing at 7:30pm.  The raindate for the event will be Monday, July 4th, with all gate and start times one hour earlier.

JUNE 17, 2005

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

HAUS EXTENDS STREAK TO 11 YEARS WITH BEDFORD WIN

By Dave Harclerode

BEDFORD, PA - Bedford Speedway takes great pride in it's rich history, and fans got to see a reminder of Bedford's past on Friday night.  The Williams Grove Old Timers Association was on hand, with several vintage racecars on display for fans to enjoy.  Highlighting the Old Timers event was a 15 minute set of fast laps, with Bedford's own Jim Nave parading around the speedway in the very same Ford Mustang # 32 that he drove to a championship at the Speedway in 1975.  The famous blue and white late model is owned and was restored by Somerset's Bud Garvey, owner of several restored vintage racecars.

Scott Haus picked up his 31st career Super Late Model win Friday evening, and most fans are aware that he is the all-time leader in late model feature wins.  However, many are unaware of another record Scott holds.  Eleven straight years with atleast one win, an incredible feat considering the tough competition at the famed 5/8 mile oval.

Haus took the lead early, with pole sitter Chris Harr and second generation driver Andy Martz trailing behind.  Ron Delano, Jr., who was impressively fast all evening, worked his way past Martz and Harr and drove the wheels off his car trying to reel Haus in.  Meanwhile, Scotty Rhodes was moving to the front from his tenth starting spot.  Looking like the Rhodes of 2003 when he won 7 Bedford Feature events, Scott picked them off one by one until he ran out of time, settling for 4th spot.  Back at the front, Delano closed the gap on Haus to four or five car lengths, but lapped traffic was in Haus' favor.  Every time Delano was set to mount a serious challenge, Haus would clear a lapped car, handing the task to Delano.  Haus maintained that five car length lead all the way to the finish line, with Delano, Harr, Rhodes, and Jeff Rine finishing the top five.  Devin Friese, DJ Troutman, Wayne Johnson, Eric Zembower and Nick Dickson completed the top ten.  Haus drove a smooth, fast race, but almost gave it all away with 10 laps to go.  After clearing a lapped car on the backstretch, he drove into turn three with a massive amount of speed.  Haus backed it up the track, throttle mashed to the floor.  He avoided the outside wall by mere inches, saving the car and the win.

Heat winners were Haus, Harr, and Friese.

Mike Shoemaker used some late racing passing to move from the fifth spot to finish second in the Limited Late Model feature.  However, race winner Brian Duffy refused a post race tech inspection, therefore handing the win to Shoemaker.  Shoemaker was more than happy to let tech inspector Todd Bechtel take a peak inside his # 8 racer, and picked up his first win of the season.  George Beckett finished second, Rance Garlock third, Mike Altobelli, Jr. fourth, and Shawn Claar fifth.  Robbie Black, Andy Teno, John Bookwalter, Shawn Bilger, and Matt Parks rounded out the top ten.

Heats went to Tim Smith, Jr. and Beckett.

Jim Sayler picked up his second win in a row in the Street Stock division.  Sayler started second in the feature event, but immediately dropped back to fifth on the start.  Pole sitter Terry Wyles looked to be a sure bet for the win until he broke half way through the race.  Ashley Barrett inherited the lead, but Sayler was knocking at the door.  Sayler passed Barrett and secured the win.  Bob Jay, Travis Calhoun, and Matt Sala finished the top five.  Sixth through tenth went to Willie Ling, Rick Cragan, Jr., Shane Molovich, Donald Wyles, and John Pahulick.

Sayler and Calhoun won the heat events.

Mike Duck continued his dominance in the Cruiser-Hobby Stocks, taking his third win of the season.  Duck won easily over Chuck Weyant, Lincoln Ritchey, Terry Norris, and Barry Weyandt.  Sixth through tenth went to Shawn Wyles, Brian Weyandt, Jr., Brandon LaSalle, AJ Foor, and Robert Weist.

Chuck Weyant and Shawn Wyles won the heats.

Friday, June 24th will be a regular 4 division show consisting of Super Late Models, Limited Late Models, Street Stocks, and Cruiser-Hobby Stocks.  The raindate for this show will be Sunday, June 26th.

Coming up on Sunday, July 3rd is the Firecracker 35 PA State Invitational for Super Late Models.  The 35 lap race will pay $2,500 to win, and $200 to start.  Tow money will paid to non-qualifiers.  The purse is over $4,000 more than last year's July holiday show.  Gates open at 4pm, with hot laps at 7pm, and racing at 7:30.  The raindate for this event in Monday, July 4th.  All gate and race times will start one hour earlier on the raindate.  The Limited Late Models, Street Stocks, and Cruiser-Hobby Stocks will also be on hand.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

HODNETT WINS ANNUAL 410 SPRINT RACE AT BEDFORD

By Dave Harclerode

BEDFORD, PA - Greg Hodnett scored his second career victory at the Bedford Speedway Tuesday night, pocketing over $3,000 in winnings.  Hodnett was blistering fast, winning his heat, the dash, and the feature.  Grabbing the lead at the drop of the green, Greg set the pace with Vince Snyder, Fred Rahmer, and Josh Wells in tow.  Rahmer was able to work his way to second just about the time Hodnett started lapping slower traffic.  Meanwhile, Lance Dewease was making his move from the 11th starting spot.  Dewease would find himself in third after Josh Wells and his number 6w sprinter hit the turn 3 wall and rolled over, bringing out the red.  Two other cautions would slow the race, one for Rob Mellott who slammed the turn 3 wall, and one for a spinning Dan Shetler in turn one.  Rahmer was able to keep the Hamilton number 77 of Hodnett in sight, but couldn't get close enough to mount any kind of challenge.  At the checkered it was Hodnett, Rahmer, Dewease, Kauffman, and Vince Snyder.  Sixth through tenth went to Mike Lutz, Daryl Stimeling, Curt Stroup, Dan Shetler, and Andy McKisson.  Lutz, Snyder, and Hodnett won the heats, and Hodnett also won the Dash.  In his interview, Hodnett eluded to speeds of an amazing 135 to 140 m.p.h. on Bedford's big backstretch.

In other action, Mikey Hay won the PA Modified Lite feature, and Mike Duck continued his winning ways in the Cruiser Hobby Stock division.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

JEFF RINE POCKETS $ 2,000 IN 35 LAP MEMORIAL DAY SPRING CHAMPIONSHIP

By Dave Harclerode

BEDFORD, PA - The racing was fast and the action was wild Sunday night at Bedford Speedway, as Jeff Rine topped veteran superstar Scott Haus to win the big Memorial Day 35 lap Super Late Model race.  Heat race action in all divisions was all out warfare, with four red flags before the lights even came on.  Mike Altobelli, Jr. won his fourth career Bedford Limited late Model feature win, and Jim Sayler charged to the front with bent front suspension to win the Street Stock main.  Victory lane regular Mike Duck took the Cruiser-Hobby Stock win.

The pits were packed with Super Late Models, and all drivers knew they'd have to be on top of their game to qualify for the feature event.  Forty-two cars battled it out in 4 heat races, and two of the heats were red flagged due to severe accidents.  In heat # 2, Coleby Frye and Jonathan DeHaven tangled on the first lap in turn one, with Frye landing upside down on top of the DeHaven ride.  In heat # 3, Rodney Sweitzer was enjoying a huge lead when something broke in his steering coming out of two.  The car veered sharply and plowed the outside wall head-on.  Luckily, there were no injuries in either mishap.

Nick Dickson and Jeff Rine sat on the front row for the start of the NAPA Super Late Model feature, and Jeff Rine knew he'd have to get out front early with all the stiff competition behind him.  Rine grabbed the lead immediately, and soon after Scotty Haus was on his tail.  With both cars being equally fast, Haus could nothing but follow for most of the race.  The best racing was back in the pack.  Bedford's own Jack Pencil and Stoystown's Ron Delano, Jr.  were coming to the front in a hurry.  Pencil started 14th, and made his way to 3rd by the end of the race.  Delano started 21st and found himself in sixth at the checkered.  Both cars seem to get faster each lap, and who knows what would've happened if the race was 50 laps instead of 35.  Travis Dillman had a good top 5 run going until a flat tire sent him to the back of the pack late in the race, and Lynn Geisler had a steady top 10 run until a late race spin put him to the tail of the pack.  At the finish line it was Rine, Haus, Pencil, Dickson, and Chuck Clise.  Sixth through tenth went to Delano, Eric Zembower, Andy Martz, Jim Yoder, and Scott Rhodes (who started 20th).  The win was Rine's first ever at the Speedway.

Heat race winners were Zembower, Rine, Dickson, and Dillman.  Bedford Speedway and regional legend Larry Wright won the Consi.

Outside row one was a good place to start Sunday night.  Mike Altobelli, Jr. started 2nd and ran in a bottle neck of racecars for the first couple laps.  Mike found himself in the lead, but it wasn't long until fifth starting Matt Parks was fast approaching.  Parks took several glances to the inside, but Altobelli, Jr. hung on for the win.  Parks settled for second, followed by Al Sharver, Sr., Rance Garlock, and 2004 Champ Mike Shoemaker.  Kevin Weyandt, Craig Perigo, Robbie Black, Brian Duffy, and Derek Byler rounded out the top ten.  Scotty Grubb brought out a red flag in heat race action after he got turned sideways on the backstretch and plowed the inside wall.  After shaking it off, Scotty walked away.  There were 29 Limiteds in the pits, and at feature time there were 27 able cars ready to go.  Management decided to nix the consi and start all 27 cars.

Garlock, Shoemaker, and Black won the qualifying events.

Last year's Street Stock Champion Jim Sayler won the feature event the hard way, charging to the front with bent right front suspension.  Travis Calhoun grabbed the lead early, but hard contact with the turn one wall ended his night.  Sayler was followed at the line by Bob Jay, Rick Cragan, Jr., Michael Stiffler, and Donald Wyles.  Dave Brown, Patrick McDonough, Greg Hainsey, Terry Wyles, and Ashley Barrett completed the top ten.

Heats went to Sayler and Barrett.

Mike Duck won the Cruiser-Hobby Stock feature with second place Brian Weyandt, Jr. glued to his bumper.  The pair ran nose to tail, actually touching, almost the entire race.  Weyandt, Jr. made several attempts for the lead, but third place finishing Lincoln Ritchey was right there to remind Weyandt that he was there to take the spot if Weyandt made a mistake.  They finished just like that, with Barry Weyandt coming home fourth, and Chuck Weyant fifth.  Sixth through tenth went to Shawn Wyles, Terry Norris, AJ Foor, Reed Stickel, and Derrick Hinish.

Weyandt, Jr., Duck, and Jesse Snyder won the heats.

It's a regular four division show next Friday, and it's also the ARCH Fan Club night.  The 410 Super Sprints will be coming to town on Tuesday, June 7th for the PA Posse Invitational.  The 25 lap race will pay $ 3,000 to win, and $ 300 to start.  There will be payout for the heats and dash, plus tow money for non-qualifiers.  Also racing that night will be the Cruiser-Hobby Stocks and the PA Modified Lites.  Gates open at 5pm, with hot laps at 7pm.  The rain date for this event is Wednesday, June 8th.

BEDFORD, PA -  Ninety-six cars packed the pits at Bedford Speedway Friday evening, on a night dedicated to the memory of Super Late Model driver Rodney Sweitzer's father Bob Sweitzer.  Last year's Super Late Model champion Jack Pencil returned to his winning ways by taking the 30 lap Bob Sweitzer Memorial race, prevailing over a hard charging Wayne Johnson.  John Bookwalter picked up his first ever win at the speedway in the Limited Late Models, Bob Jay won the Street Stock main event, and Brian Weyandt, Jr. cruised to the win in the Cruiser-Hobby Stock division.

Many consider Friday the 13th to be an unlucky day.  That's apparently not the case for Bedford's Jack Pencil.  His last win at the speedway was in August of last year, on Friday the 13th.  Jack had his hockey mask on again Friday night, as he bludgeoned the field with speed and power to take the 30 lap $1,500 to win Super Late Model feature.  Pencil started outside the front row, and immediately grabbed the lead from pole sitter Wayne Johnson.  Pencil was able to maintain a 3 car length lead for most of the race, but Johnson would make it interesting near the end.  Early in the race, traveling racer Jim Bernheisel nearly exited the track in turn two after hard contact with the wall and retaining guardrail.  For most of the event Pencil, Johnson, and Scott Rhodes paced the field as Superstar drivers Gary Stuhler and Scott Haus picked their way through the competition.  Stuhler, who started 9th, made it as far as fifth place, but could not advance any further as fourth place runner DJ Troutman proved to be too strong.  Scotty Haus started 14th, and found himself on Stuhler's bumper late in the race, but the real hard charger was Rodney Sweitzer.  Surely racing with his father's memory riding along in his car, Sweitzer came from the 21st starting position to run seventh behind Haus.  He worked hard for every position, passing some very tough competition.  Back to the front of the pack, Wayne Johnson's hopes for taking the win started looking better.  A few late race cautions helped Johnson stay right on Pencil's bumper, and with two to go Wayne made his move in turn three.  Wayne and Pencil were side by side in turn four, but the pass attempt failed.  Johnson tried the same move on the last lap, but Pencil just had too much, beating Johnson narrowly at the finish line.  Rhodes watched a good show from a close third position, and Troutman, Stuhler, Haus, Sweitzer, Devin Friese, Chris Harr, and Andy Fries finished the top ten.

Harr, Pencil, and Stuhler won the heat races, and TJ Wright took the B-Main event.

Occasional Bedford racer John Bookwalter found a good reason to spend more weekends at the big 5/8 mile speedway, by winning his first ever Limited Late Model feature event at the historic track.  It took nearly the entire race for the 2004 Track Champion Mike Shoemaker to move from his sixth place starting spot to second.  However, Bookwalter had his red # 1 racer hooked up, and Shoemaker had to settle for the second spot at the finish.  Matt Parks, Craig Perigo and Tim Smith, Jr. completed the top five.  Sixth through tenth went to George Beckett, Robbie Black, Howie Bussard, Shane Bilger, and Ray Dallape.

Bookwalter and Perigo won the qualifying events.

It's a rare occasion when someone dominates a Street Stock feature event at Bedford Speedway, but Bob Jay checked out early and won easily.  Usual front runner Daniel Cornman had a hard turn 3 crash, ending his evening along with Terry Wyles.  Last year's champ Jim Sayler was moving through the field hoping to get a shot at Jay for the lead, but a late race flat tire sent him to the rear to try again.  Jay won the event easily over Jamie Swank, Dave Brown, Travis Calhoun, and Donald Wyles.

Heat winners were Jay and Ashley Barrett.

Brian Weyandt, Jr. continued to hone his racing skills in the Cruiser Hobby Stock division, coming from fifth place to win the feature event.  Last week's winner Lincoln Ritchey led nearly the entire race, but a bobble in turn one with two to go would prove devastating for Ritchey.  Weyandt, Jr., Shawn Wyles, Travis Stickley, and Chuck Weyant all worked past Ritchey.  They finished in that order at the checkered, with Jerry Robinson, Terry Norris, Barry Weyandt, Derrick Hinish, and Chris Chamberlain completing the top ten.

Next week will be a regular 4 division show, consisting of the Interstate NAPA Super Late Models, Limited Late Models, TC Race Cars Street Stocks, and the Cruiser-Hobby Stocks.
