ACCORD SPEEDWAY NEWS
Accord, NY- Accord Speedway Closes Out Season With Wild And Exciting "Wreckage
In The Catskills" Finale
By: Steve Pados, Accord Speedway Media
Threatening skies and a quick sprinkle delayed the start of the season finale at
the Accord Speedway yesterday, but quick work by Promoter Gary Palmer and his
staff dried out the speedway and allowed for the mighty ten division show to be
run off without a hitch as the Palmer completed their eleventh season of
ownership and promotion of their pristine quarter mile facility nestled in the
foothills of Ulster County in New York State. Brisk, damp weather greeted a
large crowd of loyal racing fans as they braved the cool seasonal breezes to
witness the curtain closer for the 2011 racing season at Accord. The
multi-faceted show brought out a record 169 entries of race cars of all makes
and sizes with both male and female driving stars seeking to close out the
season in a fender banging blaze of glory. Due to the quick hitting storm
rolling in just before hot laps were to begin, the show got off to a later start
than advertised but with the track staff attacking the wet track areas and with
an abundance of great vittles from the award winning concession stand feeding
the fans, the later start became a non-entity as the wild and exciting track
action had the fans craving for more as each division finished their tour of
duty for the season on the race track. The headline sponsor for the day into
evening event was long-time mainstay WLR Construction.
The day began with the "stars of tomorrow" Junior Slingshot division competing
in two heat events to determine the feature line-up. With the Junior Slingshot
National title in the balance, Hamlin Speedway Champion "Thrillin" Dylan Martin
captured the first heat with "The Gunslinger" Jesse Leiby close behind him.
Michelle Campbell, "The Tornado" Tyler Johnston and Matthew Shultz rounded out
the top five. The second heat found "The Midget" Chris Kurtz finding victory
lane with "The Bullville Bandit" Tommy Zwart, Jared Labagh, Brandon "Juan Pablo"
McGill and Accord Speedway Champion "Kid Ice" Cole Hentschel completing the top
five.
Martin and Kurtz brought the talented Gasoline Alley TV Show sponsored 18-car
starting field down for the start of the twenty lap headliner. A wild scramble
ensued by the time the field hit turn two with Jared Labagh seizing the moment
to grab the lead and lead the opening two laps of the event with Kurtz latching
on and following Labagh around the speedway. Labagh drifted high in between
thurns three and four the next time around and Kurtz pounced on the opportunity
to make his move and take over the point and a move that would prove to be the
winning pass in the event. With Kurtz out front, the racing behind him was
spectacular as Jesse Leiby was making his move in traffic. Leiby, who is
thirteen years old and the All Star Slingshot Champion at Accord in 2011, took
advantage of the Speedway Entertainment rule book as his age allowed for him to
remain eligible to compete in the event, and Leiby wasted no time to move into
contention in third place. As Leiby moved to the outside alongside of Labagh to
challenge for the runner-up spot, Labagh turned him into the unforgiving outside
boiler plate fencing causing a restart and sending both drivers to the rear of
the bus for the restart. When green flag racing resumed, Kurtz was more than up
to the challenge as he opened up some distance between he and Johnston as the
pair raced for the win and the National Championship. Kurtz captured the win
while Johnston was in for the runner-up role and in doing so captured the
National Junior Slingshot title to add to his racing resume. Dylan Martin was
third with Brandon McGill in fourth and Cole Hentschel completing the top five.
"The Predator" Kevin Predmore raced to a nice sixth place finish and Leiby
recovered from the spin to finish seventh and in doing so turned in the fastest
laps of the day for the Slingshots. Carly Velez was eighth in the former Krachun
owned race car with Wyalusing Speedway Champion Alex Shaffer in ninth and "The
Jonestown Jet" Kyle Gruber rounding out the top ten.
The Arkel Motors Pure Stock division kicked off a series of 30-lap feature
events for the full size racers. Kevin Skelly, who has taken an extreme liking
to the Accord facility, found his way into the lead at the start and led for the
first four laps before yielding to Ryan Johnson on a restart. Although a ton of
pressure confronted Johnson from the talented field of racers behind him,
Johnson hung tough and led the remainder of the event to claim the win. Skelly
did a great job to finish in the runner-up role with Jason Meltz in third place
Jeff Meltz in fourth and female jockey Allison Ricci completing the top five
with a solid run in the former Tommy Johnson Championship racer from two seasons
ago.
The "Run What You Brung" Modifieds were up next and 20 cars signed in to do
battle. Some of the wild creations cars were sporting over the top billboards in
Plexiglas, some were tricked out with Sprint Car wings top and front and
additional appendages, while some just brought out their Friday night specials
to tackle the speedway. Craig "Hollywood" Mitchell used the billboard, big block
power and a big right foot to power his Freedom Plains sponsored hot rod out
front for a couple of laps before yielding to "Showtime" Danny Tyler who was
using the top shelf of the speedway to find the quick way to the front. Tyler,
who used a big billboard in hot laps before returning to a conventional look,
was quick with his hot rod and led until the midway point of the event. A
restart saw Mitchell re-capture the lead with Tyler in hot pursuit and Tyler
again went topside as he pulled alongside of Mitchell in the middle of the
backstretch. Mitchell closed the outside lane to protect the lead and forced
Tyler into the boiler plate, causing considerable damage to the Tyler mount that
ended the showtime bid and placed Mitchell back to the rear of the bus for the
restart. The third place man at the time of the incident, "Billboard Vinny"
Vinny DeCicco inherited the lead and quickly distanced himself from the field to
lead the remaining laps and score the win. "The Stottville Storm" Mark Pullen
enjoyed a great run with a runner-up performance and Garden Stater Sean Gunther
maded a triumphant return to the speedway as he overcame two skirmishes on the
racetrack to finish third with Mitchell racing back to fourth place and the
returning Tony Kowalchuk completing the top five. Richard Smith, newcomer John
Ruchel, Tom Cole, John Sundlof and Greg McCloskey rounded out the top ten.
Outside invader Walt Brownell was a quick study as the Ballston Spa, New York
racer took advantage of a pole start and proceeded to lead all thirty laps of
the Pro Stock encounter to grab the win and making it his first career win at
the Accord Speedway. Brownell quickly showed he knew the fast way around the
Accord facility as he grabbed the lead at the drop of the green flag and lead
all of the laps to claim the win despite mid-race pressure from the returning
Emerson Cargain Jr. Cargain, the 2010 Pro Stock Champion, faded a bit towards
the end of the event but held off a strong running Ralph Ronk to end up as the
runner-up with Ronk in third, the Ford powered hot rod of Accord regular John
Roese in fourth place and Lebanon Valley invader Buddy Hencke completing the top
five. Paul Aragon, Jimmy Sykes, invader Allen Tarantino, Al Christiana and Tommy
Vigh completed the top ten. A Dash for Cash was included in the event with Russ
Nuzzaro winning with Al Christiana and Walt Brownell following. The dollars for
the Dash was put together by Jordan Sheehan from sponsors R&R Towing and Bulldog
Concrete among others.
The Sportsman 50 headliner that was a held over event from the postponed King of
the Catskills weekend, found Shane Jablonka with a hot hand for the first two
laps before yielding to Anthony Perrego who went topside to seize control of the
event. Perrego was steering a fast hot rod and opened up some distance on
Jablonka and the remainder of the field throughout some early skirmishes that
found many top contenders dropping out of the event before the midway point. A
restart found Jablonka getting another shot at Perrego and Jablonka made the
most of it by pulling off a perfect slider that saw a caution come out and
negating the pass. Perrego breathed a sigh of relief and made sure on the next
start he was up to the task as he got a great restart to lead the field and
would go on to capture the win and take home a cool $2,000.00 for his winning
efforts. Jablonka was the runner-up with steady Ryan Stortini in third place,
Darrell Ford in fourth and Will Dietz driving from 15th starting place to round
out the top five. Dave Werber, Brad Szulweski, Greg McCloskey, Mike Skelly and
Randy Green completed the top ten finishers. Steve Krom returned to action and
got upside down on the backstretch in a bout with the boiler plate and 2011
track champion Kevin Ward dropped out early with steering problems.
The Powder Puff Pure Stock event saw Allison Ricci grab the lead at the start
and dominate the action as she drove to an easy win while the Four Cylinder
version saw Amber Van Orden finding the fast lane and driving to victory.
Jay Alexander outlasted all of the competition to win the Demolition Derby
inside the Accord Redi Rock Concrete Square Arena.
The Four Cylinder Enduro 50-lap grind was just that as fenders, front ends,
tires, bumpers and stuff not yet determined were falling off the race cars at a
rapid clip as the drivers fought for the right to lead the parade of 51 entries
in the fender flying fracas. George Zeininger started the event from 24th
position but was able to avoid the pitfalls of the competiton to lead the event
before the race hit the midway point. Al Weinert, who captured a similar event
earlier in the season at OCFS, got close on occasion but it was the ability of
Zeininger to avoid the trouble spots on the raceway to drive to a convincing win
over Weinert and third place man Keith Henry
MUDPLUGS:
The fun-filled day at the Accord Speedway brought out a great crowd, a great
group of competitors and despite the challenges from Mother Nature proved to be
a great day for all racing fans and drivers. concerned. The crazy and
outlandishly painted enduro cars and the bumping and grinding of the on track
competition provided for a delightful day in the Catskill Mountains. The fun and
the entertainment value of the low-cost divisions has proven to be a tremendous
opportunity for the budget minded competitiors to enjoy racing without having to
dip so far into their pockets.
With Saturday's event, Co-Announcer Joel Murns ended his successful announcing
tenure at the speedway. After consultation with his family, Murns has made the
difficult decision to step away from the mike at Accord to concentrate on his
racing efforts at both Accord and the OCFS racing facilities. The Palmer Family,
Steve Pados and all of the Accord track staff offer their very best to Joel
Murns in all of his future endeavors in racing.
Track Lensman Kevin Berryman captured the 50/50 drawing to the tune of $259.00.
Miss Accord Speedway Erika Decker braved the cold weather as she greeted the
winners in the Lucas Oil Products Victory Lane with her big smile and a few
shivers as the temperatures dipped as the sun went down.
Heat race winners included Craig Mitchell and Sean Gunther in the Mods, Walt
Brownell and Ron Nuzzaro in the Pro Stocks and Dillon Johnson and Shawn Maloney
in the Pure Stock divisions.
The Chefs in the Accord kitchen were not to be outdone as home made Chicken
Noodle Soup and a variety of hand-crafted sandwiches were the featured
attractions and the food lines were busy all day with the fans really digging
into the great cuisine offered by the speedway Chefs.
The latest edition of Dirt Modified Magazine has a Steve Pados penned article
regarding three time Accord Speedway Modified Champion Jerry Higbie and the new
chassis he is constructing at his Goshen, New York based race business.

Speedway Results
Modifieds First Followed by Lucas Oil Late Model Results
Aukland Aces Atomic DTWC
O'Neal The Real Deal in Green-to-Checkered Run
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
By Scott Wolfe
CHILLICOTHE, OHIO- Schrader's K-C Raceway has a new name (See separate story),
thus in essence making Zanesville Ohio driver and Late Model Hall of Famer Rick
Aukland the first driver to win at Atomic Speedway since 1983. Aukland claimed
the first leg of the U.S. Steel 31st Annual/Sunoco Dirt Track World Championship
Saturday night at the newly renamed Atomic Speedway in Chillicothe, Ohio, where
he claimed the 30-lap, $3,000 to win modified A-main.
A large crowd and 94 of the Region's best modified driver's were on hand for a rain-postponed 2nd day of the Dirt Track World Championship modified show Friday night, where the field for the Saturday night finals was set. A large crowd joined the overflowing field through four rain delays. The Modifieds were able to complete their program Friday; however, the Lucas Oil Late Model’s portion of the slate was suspended after a heavy rain until Saturday. Thursday night's program had earlier been postponed by rain to Friday at noon. The Lucas Oil summary follows below.
High winds dried Thursday and Friday's muck to a hard, baked surface. Unlike, Friday when the track was super-fast from top to bottom, Saturday's program saw the track lock down unlike the normal Atomic racing surface. Despite losing the high-against-the-wall feel that is prominent at Atomic, speeds were fast and furious on the low side.
Promoter Carl Short was once-again well-pleased with the K-C/Atomic atmosphere, but disappointed in the weather and the havoc it created. Tentatively and reportedly, the DTWC will be at Atomic for at least the next two years with positive indication that it will be the "Home of the DTWC".
Low rider Aukland said, "I knew the key was staying in my line, keeping it straight, and not wavering too high out of the groove or too low below it. I was fortunate to start up front."
Aukland continued, "The track actually was pretty good for all the rain we had. I appreciate the track crew for working so hard the last three days to make this race possible. The weather is what-it-is and we happened to be in the right spot. I'd like to thank my crew and owner for a great car, and hopefully we put on a great show for the fans."
Said second place Bobby Kitchen, "I had a good car, but was a little disappointed I couldn't keep it up front. I just needed a little more. Thanks to Jr. Nolan and the crew for putting me in the driver's seat."
"It's been a tough year at times," said third place Aaron Scott. "But we came on strong at the end and really had fun tonight. The car was good, but we just needed a little more. I was glad to hang on to third, but would have liked to put it up front. Thanks to all of my sponsors, crew, and car owner."
After rain wiped out the program Thursday, the Modified portion of the DTWC program was to start at 2 p.m. Friday. Sunny skies greeted the crowd early, but pop-up showers four-times delayed the program. After the first delay, the modified program was on target to finish on time for the Lucas Oil late models, but three more times rain slowed the action.
Cars from seven states were on hand for the modified portion of the program that saw Bart Hartman blister the track at a 15:258 which reportedly was a new track record. Further research revealed that AMRA National Champion Kenny Johnson maintained the track record, set in July at 15:226. Never-the-less, Friday saw a fast track and fierce qualifying-heat competition. Cars from the AMRA, UMP, TSMA, and IMCA were represented in the line-up.
Saturday's feature stacked early leader Bobby Kitchen and Rick Aukland against each other with AMRA champ Johnson, fast timer Hartman, 2010 AMRA Road Warrior Champ Matt Holcomb, and the colorful Corey Conley right in the wake.
Great late model heats set the tone for the 30-lap mod feature. Early on multiple groove racing saw side-by-side action, but that quickly shifted to a blitzing freight train around the bottom.
NASCAR legend Kenny Schrader came off the tail to 14th, while young Dustin Linville made some room on the high side of the back chute to charge from 14th to 9th, and Rob Stambaugh from 16th to 11th. K-C Provisional and second place points man at the track behind Dave Fireball Pinkerton came from 27th to 20th.
While great action occurred deep in the pack Kitchen set the early tone, only to have Aukland root the young driver out for number one on lap eight. Hartman had his number 75 flying in third, and moved up out of the groove. There he cut a tire with two laps to go, setting up a drag race to the finish.
Earlier the AMRA's Mike McPherson, Aaron Scott, Tanner Wilson, and Rick Corbin--who moved up the ladder-- engaged in a torrid battle for the top five.
Aukland never received the expected challenge at the finish as he roared on to the win. Hard charger was former TSMA champion Kevin Morehouse in a 15th to 7th place run. 2011 TSMA champ Mark Dickson narrowly missed the show and was an alternate.
Rounding out the top ten were Aukland, Kitchen, Scott, Corbin, McPherson, Conley, Morehouse, Jesse Wisecarver, Dustin Linville, and Dave Jamison.

Late Model DTWC Summary and Story (Provided by Lucas Oil)
O’Neal Wins U. S. Steel Dirt Track World Championship; Owens Clinches Lucas Oil
Series Title
admin | Oct 15, 2011 | Comments 0
ALMA, OH (October 15, 2011) – Don O’Neal of Martinsville, IN led flag-to-flag in
capturing the 31st Annual Dirt Track World Championship Presented by Sunoco on
Saturday Night at Atomic Speedway. O’Neal started on the pole and paced the
field the entire distance to earn $50,000 for his first career win in the event.
Jimmy Owens of Newport, TN finished second, enabling him to clinch the 2011
Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series National Championship. Josh Richards of
Shinnston, WV came home third followed by Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN and
Ray Cook of Brasstown, NC.
O’Neal waited through several caution flags during the event, none of which were
major incidents as he brought the MasterSbilt House Car home for the third crown
jewel win of the season and his fifth series victory of the year. “Tonight was
all about tire management, we were a little softer than the second and third
place cars, we just bided our time out there, I drove it as straight as I could,
it’s pretty easy when you’ve got a good race car,” said the 47-year-old driver,
who finished third in the championship points.
O’Neal had some timely cautions as he was about to catch up to the tail end of
the field. “I didn’t want to see that lapped traffic, the race was one-lane all
night, there wasn’t much they could do about it, after starting late afternoon
while the sun is still up and the rain last night. I have to thank MasterSbilt
Race Cars, Randy, Tader and Cody and all those guys back at the shop, they make
it possible for me to run as well as we do, Jay Dickens Racing Engines, they
been solid all year long, I have to thank Magnaflow Exhaust for coming on board
this year, VP Fuels, Superior Cleaning, Independence Lumber, Janowski Insurance
and Second Chance Livestock Dispatch and all of our product sponsors we couldn’t
do it with them.”
Owens trailed O’Neal the entire distance to finish second. In doing so, he
clinched his first career Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Title after finishing
runner-up the last two years to Scott Bloomquist. “We came here to win the race
of course, but once we got into second we took a few shots at the lead, but
we’ve had a great year,” said the driver of the Mike Reece owned, Bloomquist
Race Cars Ford.
“You’ve got to be consistent to win this thing, top five finishes are so
important, you’ve got to able to capitalize when someone else has misfortune,
that’s part of it,” said the 39-year-old Owens who captured eight series wins
this year on his way to the championship.
“To say we beat Scott Bloomquist, means a lot, he builds a great race car, I
know we went back-and-forth all year in the points battle, my crew worked their
tails off all year, we are glad to be celebrating after this race, we were
conservative on tires, Don was setting a great pace there tonight, we were glad
we didn’t hit a lot of traffic. I have to thank everyone from the fans, our
souvenir people, and all of our sponsors for their support.”
Richards was able to get around Bloomquist to finish 3rd in the Kentucky Fuel,
Roush-Yates, Rocket Ford as Bloomquist wound up 4th, ending the year second in
points in the Miller Brothers Construction, Roush-Yates, Bloomquist Race Cars
Ford. Cook finished the season off with a top five finish in the D&R Racing,
Rockstar Energy Drink, MasterSbilt Chevrolet.
Completing the top ten were John Blankenship of Williamson, WV; Steve Francis of
Ashland, KY; Mike Marlar of Winfield, TN; Earl Pearson Jr. of Jacksonville, FL;
and R.J. Conley of Wheelersburg, OH.

Raceway Has New Name
Track Renamed Atomic Speedway
By Scott Wolfe
CHILLICOTHE, OHIO-"What is old is new and what is new is old", is a phrase that
depicts a cycle of human nature. Jeff and Vickie Schrader, in the name of
restoring the explosive nature of their K-C Raceway, have officially renamed the
legendary 3/8 mile track in Southern Ohio as "The Atomic Speedway."
Said Jeff Schrader, "We felt that Atomic Speedway has always been Atomic Speedway. That was the name of the track when my Dad came here in 1953, and I grew up at Atomic Speedway. I appreciate all the work, the improvements, and personal care the previous owners of the track have done here. They are part of the history, but tonight (Oct. 14) my partner and I, my only partner--my wife Vicki, want to officially rename the track with its old name-- Atomic Speedway."
A huge banner was unveiled on the track scoreboard with the new Atomic Speedway Logo developed by Brian Phipps of Graphic Creations.
In 1953 a group of Chillicothe businessmen realized a plan that had been in the making for several years. The group, which consisted of racing fans, drivers, and car owners, sought to provide a premier racing facility for the rapidly growing sport they knew as Stock Car Racing. It was a sport they lived and loved. It was the vision of this particular group of men that led to the construction of Atomic Speedway, which became known nationwide as K-C Raceway. As of Friday, October 14 K-C Raceway once again became Atomic Speedway.
Although the track was widened to its present state in the mid 1970's to accommodate higher speeds, the track still maintains its original configuration.
This group formed what became known as the non-profit organization of the Chillicothe Stock Car Racing Association or CSCRA, which previously sanctioned races at the Ross County Fairgrounds track. Their new endeavor, which began as a purchase of prime land off State Route 23 on Blaine Highway, became known as Atomic Speedway for its proximity to the new Uranium enrichment plant at nearby Piketon, Ohio. Strategically, the new location was also nearly halfway between Waverly, Ohio and Chillicothe; and the name Atomic Speedway held a dual meaning in that the racing to come was literally "atomic and explosive" in nature. A diamond in the rough was to become a crown jewel among the nation's speedways.
Probably none of the original members of the ownership, envisioned that what they took on as a hobby would ever grow into the national icon that Atomic Speedway has become. From a small dirt track and minimal bleachers, Atomic Speedway has grown into a first class facility.
Almost immediately big-time racers from all across the Midwest wanted to test the Atomic High-banks. Drivers learned quickly that Atomic was more than the typical bullring; it was the Indy 500 of short track racing. Besides a wealth of drivers from the Ross County-Scioto-Pike County areas, Atomic was drawing drivers from Indiana and Kentucky as well as Northern Ohio and especially the Columbus, Ohio area. Suddenly, Atomic Speedway had turned into the CSCRA's "Big Adventure"; and life was good.
The track operated under the sanction of the CSCRA until around 1978 when many of the original members of the organization were near or exceeding retirement years. The CSCRA banner was known from coast to coast as promoting many big-time races. The "Buckeye 100" and "Atomic 100" were two of the sanction's largest events and the CSCRA promoted its races, its drivers, and its shining facility in a first class manner. The organization not only met its goal of giving local racers a place to compete, but it also promoted a first class facility that saw many driver's pass through en route to fame with USAC and NASCAR.
With its membership aging, the CSCRA turned over the reigns to an ambitious promoter Russ Conley, who held many of the first-ever $5,000 to win races at his new speed plant. Conley also delved in operating the Southern Ohio Raceway and sought to run SOR on Saturday's and Atomic on Sunday's. Conley eventually sought bigger adventures with the advent of the World of Outlaws and their popularity, and became a partner in MOSS (Midwest Outlaw Super Sprints) which promoted sprint car races and eventually some late model races. (Due to a dispute, that group became known as the current All-Star Circuit of Champions)
As the economy stiffened in Southern Ohio and Sunday night racing became too much for the fan base, Atomic Speedway sat idle and went on the real estate market at the end of 1983. After sitting idle for nearly the entire 1984 season, the Karshner family purchased the speedway along with the Cooper family of Cooper Glass. Thus, K-C Raceway was born-the "K" from Karshner and "C" from Cooper. Action would resume in 1985 with Super Sprints, Late Models, and 6 Cylinders as the main attractions. Immediately, K-C Raceway was once again a success.
Soon the Karshner's would become sole owners of K-C, but the name had already been established as the place to be. Eleanor Karshner, sister to multi-time champion Jr. Smalley, served as promoter, while husband Dave was in charge of track preparation and the facility itself. Dave and son Brian are still involved in track prep today. The entire family served a role in the track's success from 1985-2001. During this reign, K-C established well-known events at the "Freedom 40", "K-C 100", "Spring 50", and served as a staple in the well-established All-Ohio All-Star Outlaw Sprint Speedweek. Around 1988 a Hobby Stock class replaced the 6 cylinders and around 1990 a fourth class was added the UMP Modified.
The Chillicothe
economy was not the best at the turn of millenium, and many weekly shows lost
money. Nearing retirement from their regular jobs and often having to pump their
own money into the purses, the Karshner’s sought a buyer; but because they had
put years of heart and soul into their investment, not just any buyer would do.
Rumors spread that other promoters would buy the track for a premium price then
close it down. That was not about to happen. Then came young businessman Jason
Lafferty, who seemed to be the perfect buyer.
After only one night of operation, Lafferty admitted that promoting was not his
forte and he sought out his friend Jim Nier, who had steered him towards the
original deal in the first place.
Said Jimmy Nier, "I wanted to race a couple more years. I did not want to own a
race track at this point in my life." "But Dad called one night, and I knew what
was going to happen. We met with Jason and when it was all over, we owned a race
track."
The Nier's finished out the 2002 season with the schedule that was handed them. Then came 2003. "Anything I do, I want to give it 100 percent," asserted Nier. "We decided if we were going to own a race track, we were going to make it the best track around. We wanted to make it a safe, fun place to race and a place the fans could enjoy. Most of all we wanted to put on the best possible show."
Many improvements followed. With the theme "if you build it, they will come", Atomic expanded quickly with a continuously growing pit area, new seating, a new press tower, new concessions, and remodeled rest room facilities. Even a playground for the kids is in place. Atomic Speedway is indeed a racing showplace.
In 2009, K-C Raceway/Atomic Speedway got a new enthusiastic owner in Jeff Schrader and wife Vickie. Said Jeff, "My dreams have come true."
But first and foremost is the outstanding racing schedule and tradition-rich quality of high-speed racing established by the CSCRA back in 1953. Nearly every top rated sanctioning body has raced at K-C Raceway. Many have visited since the Nier family took over, and many more stars are expected to shine under the tenure of Jeff and Vickie Schrader.
Says Schrader,
Atomic Speedway is here to stay. It can only get bigger and better.

THUNDER ON THE HILL RACING SERIES
147 CARS FILL GRANDVIEW PITS AT HOUSE OF THUNDER HALLOWEEN PARTY. . . . .
AIKIN EARNS $4,000, HOWARD $3,000 AS WHITMOYER. WEAN & GLATFELTER SHARE
GRANDVIEW THUNDER 5-25'S VICTORIES SATURDAY NIGHT ON THE HILL
It was a great night of racing complimented by superb track conditions as the
NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill Racing Series presented its' season finale
with the traditional House of Thunder Halloween Party and the Grandview Thunder
5-25's at the Grandview Speedway on Saturday night. This features only program
produced some great racing as Chad Glatfelter won the Legends feature as Nick
Wean won a thriller with the ARDC Midgets. Craig Whitmoyer started seventeenth
and won the 25 lap Sportsman feature and in the modified main event, Duane
Howard wrestled the lead from Jeff Strunk to pocket $3,000 for the as Ed Aikin
held off Dave Ely and a fast closing Robbie Stillwaggon to earn $4,000 for the
URC win. Added attractions saw Dennis Bailey win the Vince's Towing Legend
Owners Race as Bob Snyder won the Garden State Vintage Cars event. The night cap
was the Monster Smash demolition derby that saw Matt Reese best a field of
twelve starters. A whopping purse of over $36,000 was paid out to the
one-hundred and forty-seven drivers who competed in this annual blockbuster
event.
The 25 lap Palmer Candy Legends Feature opened the show with Chad Glatfelter of
Spring Grove, PA earning the winner. Glatfelter led most of the race holding off
some serious challenges from Scott Houdeshell. Glatfelter took the win over
Houdeshell, Harlon Leppo and fifteenth place started Tim Bauer.
The 25 lap ARDC Midget feature was next and Alex Bright set the early pace. On
lap five, while racing in the top five, Steve Buckwalter tangled with another
car and took a violent flip in turn three. Buckwalter walked away uninjured. On
the restart, Bright remained the leader with Brett Arndt in second and Nick Wean
third. By lap ten, Wean was the leader but this race was far from over.
Throughout the pack, there were cars racing three abreast with Ryan Smith now on
the move. At lap fifteen, Wean remained the leader with Smith second and Bright
third. Slower traffic was going to make this finish exciting as race leader Nick
Wean threaded his way through traffic. In the closing laps, Smith and Arndt were
closing in the Wean. With the checker flag waiving, Nick Wean took the win over
Ryan Smith, Brett Arndt, Andrews Hannula and Alex Bright.
One of the "fun" events of the night was next with the Vince's Towing Legends
Owners race. Eight former driver/owners answered the call and the race we
certainly entertaining. The "Bailey Bunch" made up of the excitement Dennis
Bailey take the win over Randy Bailey.
The sportsman were next to answer the call in the 13 lap BFP Specialty feature
event. Blaine Sadler led the first lap with Paul Kline taking the lead on lap
two. Kline set a blistering pace but all eyes were on Craig Whitmoyer who was
charging to the front from his seventeenth starting position. Mike Loney, Jared
Umbenhauer and Ryan Beltz were in the hunt and racing in the top five. On lap
fifteen, we had a new leader with Craig Whitmoyer now at the front of the pack.
In the final laps, slower traffic could change the outcome as Kline and Loney
were again closing in on the leader. Whitmoyer was running the high groove,
touching the outside boiler-plate with each lap, Whitmoyer held the lead all the
way to the checker flag taking the win over Paul Kline, Jared Umbenhauer and
Ryan Beltz.
In the eighteen car Garden State Vintage Car Race, Bob Snyder was the winner of
the twelve lap feature event.
The most anticipated Trick or Treat Revenge Redraw was up next for the
modifieds. The modifieds competed in timed warm-ups and the top eight fastest
cars were Duane Howard, Ryan Godown, Mike Gular, MeMe DeSantis, Jeff Strunk, Ray
Swinehart, AJ DeSantis and Shawn Reimert. BK Auto Parts & Esposito Racing posted
a $200 bonus to one of the eight fast time qualifiers. The eight drivers drew
from a witches hat looking for the one treat. After several drivers pulled a
trick, it was Ray Swinehart who drew the treat and collected the $200 bonus. In
the revenge redraw, each driver drew a numbered pumpkin then had to give that
number to another driver of their choice. It became real interesting when Shawn
Reimert drew the number eight. After some hesitation and much heckling from the
crowd, Reimert said, "I know he's my neighbor, but I have to give the eight to
Duane Howard". Interesting enough, when Howard took his turn to draw and pulled
the number seven, he exchanged the favor and offered that number to Reimert. Ray
Swinehart was treated with the pole and AJ DeSantis the outside front row. Jeff
Strunk started third, MeMe DeSantis fourth, Mike Gular fifth, Ryan Godown sixth
as Shawn Reimert and Duane Howard rounded out the top eight.
With fireworks bursting in the sky, the green flag fell to start the 25 lap BPG
Modified feature. AJ DeSantis jumped into the early lead with Jeff Strunk in the
hunt running second. DeSantis did a masterful job at the front of the pack as
Strunk was challenging for the lead. DeSantis and Strunk were in a side-by-side
battle and on lap seven, Duane Howard moved into third. Howard was reeling in
the leaders who were still in a battle of their own for the lead.
On lap nine, Strunk powered into the lead as DeSantis drifted high in turn
three. The first and only caution of the race was displayed on lap ten for Shawn
Reimert who stopped in turn three. The restate would be interesting with Strunk,
AJ DeSantis and Howard in the top three. At the drop of the green, Strunk held
the lead although DeSantis did fight back. DeSantis now had to defend his second
place spot but on lap eleven, Howard made the move to take over second. The
chase was on, Howard was running down Jeff Strunk. Meanwhile, Ryan Godown was
heading to the front as well. By lap fifteen, the top five was Strunk, Howard,
AJ DeSantis, Ryan Godown and Swinehart.
And this one is not over yet. With five laps remaining, Howard caught Strunk and
the race was again underway with plenty of slower traffic just ahead to make it
interesting. The two car battle brought the fans to their feet, and on the white
flag lap, Howard and Strunk tangled at the near end of the backstretch. Howard
took the lead with Strunk in second and looking for a move to regain the top
spot. For the final lap, Howard held the top spot with Jeff Strunk second, Ryan
Godown third, AJ DeSantis fourth and Mike Gular fifth.
The PPB 25 lap URC sprint feature was next on the program, making this event
their final point race of the Rislone Sprint Series. The Grandview show also
marked the final point race of the Valley Forge Inc Pennsylvania Sprint Series.
At the drop of the green flag, Ed Aikin took the lead with Dave Ely in second
and challenging. Aikin could not get away from Ely and on lap five, Ely became
the new leader. Aikin refused to give up and challenged for the lead once again.
On lap ten, Aikin took back the lead but Ely was not going to close the books on
this race.
At the halfway mark, Aikin, Ely and Robbie Stillwaggon were the three with Rory
Janney and Josh Weller in the top five. Ely reeled in Aikin once again and on
lap twenty-two, it was two car race. The first and only caution of the race was
displayed on lap twenty-three when Jeff Fifthian spun in two one. On the restart
and with just two laps remaining, Ely gave it all he had going into turn one and
as the two charged out of turn two, Ed Aikin nosed ahead. Suddenly, Robbie
Stillwaggon moved into the picture and he was challenging Ely for second.
With the checker flag waiving, Aikin took the URC win sponsored by Pioneer Pole
Building. A near dead heat finish saw Robbie Stillwaggon earn second with Dave
Ely third, Rory Janney fourth and JJ Grasso fifth. Curt Michael started tenth
and finished ninth in the feature event to earn his eighth URC Championship
crown driving the Bill Gallagher owned sprint car. Aikin earned in total $4,000
for the win, collecting a $1,000 bonus from Paul Messick of Viper-Venon racing
fuel. JJ Grasso was the Fred's Trailer Parts Hard Charger of the race.
In the twelve car Monster Smash Demolition Derby, Matt Reese was the winner.

GREAT SPONSORSHIP PACKAGE AVAILABLE AT REDUCED PRICE
LANGHORNE, PA October 14, 2011 . . . The auto racing season is just about over
and efforts to attract serious sponsorship support for the 2012 season (and
beyond) should be in place.
“In fact if race teams are not already working on their sponsorship for next season they are already running behind,” said Motorsports Sponsorship Marketing News publisher Ernie Saxton. “Securing sponsorship has gotten tougher in recent years and the current economic picture is not going to make it any easier so that means you have to start sooner and offer more to attract sponsorship.”
With that in mind
Saxton, considered by many to be a motorsports sponsorship authority, is
offering a couple of special deals to help racers with their sponsorship
efforts.
A “DOING IT RIGHT” sponsorship package is now available that includes a video of
an actual Saxton sponsorship seminar (about two hours in length), a Milt Gedo CD
on how to create a winning sponsorship proposal, a generic proposal that
includes a contract and cover letter, the famous Hodgepodge of Sponsorship Helps
and a one year subscription to Saxton’s Motorsports Sponsorship Marketing News
which is now approaching its 27th year of publication. The price for this
special package is just $149.95 plus $10.00 to cover shipping and handling.
In addition Saxton is offering, for those who do not want to take advantage of the “DOING IT RIGHT” sponsorship package, a one year subscription to Motorsports Sponsorship Marketing News, the newsletter that has helped so many with their sponsorship efforts and continues to keep readers informed on the latest trends in sponsorship and the latest sponsorship deals. Experts offer feature articles that can assist readers with their sponsorship marketing. For a limited time the newsletter is available for just $29.95 a year (normal price is $59.95). And we will include the latest edition at no additional charge.
Orders can be placed by telephoning Ernie Saxton at 267.934.7286 (cell phone) and have your credit card (Visa or MasterCard ready). Orders can also be sent to ESC, Inc. at 1448 Hollywood Avenue, Langhorne, PA 19047.
These special offers are not available on the Saxton website but you are invited to visit www.saxtonsponsormarket.com for free sponsorship information and other packages that are available. New customers are given a 10% discount when they purchase through the website.
Saxton’s sponsorship
articles continue to appear in a variety of media including Late Model Racer and
National Dragster.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE- - -THANK YOU
URC’s Jonathan Swanson Making Comeback At Grandview
Yardville, NJ -- After suffering a broken scapula after a hard flip at Big
Diamond Speedway on August 12th, URC driver Jonathan Swanson is making his
comeback at Grandview Speedway on Saturday, October 15th. Missing the last two
months of URC competition Jonathan is ready to get back into the driver’s seat.
“It’s been a long two months with not being able to race,” said Jonathan. “I
know they (URC) had a few rainouts during the past two months, but I also missed
a few races too. My shoulder’s all healed so I’m ready to race again.”
With Pioneer Pole Buildings being a major sponsor for the upcoming URC race at
Grandview and for Jonathan, Saturday seemed like the perfect time to make his
return to the track.
“I thought I would get to race again at New Egypt in September,” said Jonathan,
“but the doctor told me I still needed at least another month to heal a few
weeks before that race. This is the perfect situation to come back at Grandview
and put on a good show for Bob and everyone at Pioneer.”
To celebrate his return to the track and to thank Pioneer for all their support
throughout the season Jonathan will have several Pioneer giveaways at his
trailer to join in the trick-or-treat theme for the night. After a long absence
from the track Jonathan is ready to rejoin URC and fight for 13th place in the
final points standings.

Enduro Championships to be Decide at Mountain’s “Halloween Screamer”
By: Gene Ostrowski
October 12, 2011
The final event of the Mountain Madness Enduro Series at Mountain Speedway is
slated for Saturday, October 29. With double points on the line and with
150-laps of green flag enduro action, patience is sure to be the determining
factor as to whether the drivers take the checkers or ride the wreckers.
The season-ending double-points 150-lap enduros for the four cylinder and
6/8-cylinder divisions will not only decide who is crowned champion, but there
is also a large chunk of change up for grabs to the winner- $500 to be exact,
which is based on a minimum of 25 cars starting each event.
The points battles are very close in the competitive series, which has TJ Kapish
at the helm in the 6/8-cylinder division. Tom Szoke sits a close second in the
standings, only five points out of the lead. Winless so far this season, Ken
Harper has a nine point advantage over Bruce Miller in the four-cylinder
division.
The Halloween Screamer events will be held rain or shine. Registrations for the
event are beginning to flow into the track office. Drivers will line up for the
start of the race as their registration is received. Drivers that register the
day of the event will tag on to the end of the field.
The final INEX Legends event labeled “The Legends Fall Championship” is also
scheduled for the afternoon.
All of the action will begin at 1 PM.
Registration forms for the Halloween Screamer enduro can be downloaded from the
speedway website at

Skyline Sprint Finale to Duncan
Carpenter, Carpenter, and Evans Claim
STEWART, OHIO-A good crowd and great night welcomed Lockbourne, Ohio driver Cole
Duncan in the family owned 22/Labonte Racing/ISPC sponsored car to victory lane
in the Ohio Valley Sprint Car Association $3,000 to win finale Saturday night.
Fast Freddie Carpenter, South Parkersbug, WV claimed the AMRA Late Models, son
Tyler Carpenter claimed the Crate Late feature and Robbie Evans grabbed the AMRA
modified main. The event drew 112 cars for the season-ending event.
A great field of 410 sprint cars on Hoosier Tires turned out for the special
$3,000 event. Casualties for the nght included flip victims Jimmy Stinson in the
feature and Jamie Myers in one of the preliminaries. Veteran Benny Hickel
finished second in his heat race, but left the track afterward after seeking
medical attention and did not race the feature.
As always the sprint cars put on a great show, but when the dust had settled, it
was Cole Duncan, who also won last year's finale in a repeat performance.
Rounding out the top ten were Cole Duncan, Danny Smith, Andre Layfield, Chris
Myers, Jimmy Nier, Aaron Higgins, Keith Baxter, Wayne McPeek, Dave Dickson, and
Josh Davis.
Keith Baxter was the hard charger after moving up into the feature by virtue of
a b-main win.
Fast Freddie Carpenter saved the best for last as the Tru-Tech C-4 Special was
the first to the finish line after a race-long battle with son Chris Carpenter
and Chris Garnes. Rounding out the top ten were Freddie Carpenter, C. Carpenter,
Chris Garnes, Travis Brookover, Shawn Jett, Dan Morrison, Daniel Hill, Roy
Roush, and Ralph Withem.
Robbie Evans was the best of the field in the highly competitive AMRA modified
divisioin. 29 Cars packed the pits in an effort to make the feature. Rick Venham,
Jr., Evans, and Dusty Boley were the heat winners.
Evans blitzed to victory after a strong battle with Vince Conrad and Andy Bond.
Rounding out the top ten were Robbie Evans, Conrad, A. Bond, Garnes, McPherson,
Boley, Venham, Willis, Carr, and Conley,
Another Carpenter built the foundation for a win in the Crate Lates--young Tyler
Carpenter brought home the win over Kenney Newhouse and Steve Bigley. Rounding
out the top ten were Carpenter, Newhouse, Bigley, Hall, Doll, Huber, Burdette,
Hinkle, Prosser, and Smith.
Jason Gillian brought home the win over a fifteen car field in the Mini-Wedge
division.
Fans should stay posted for upcoming events and banquet news on the website. The
banquet has tentatively been set for Nov. 19.

New Glarus, Wisconsin: "Showtime" Zack Riddle Races To Runner-up Finish In Big 8
Final At Lacrosse
By Steve Pados, R&R Motorsports Racing Media
Brooklyn, Wisconsin racing star Zack Riddle has enjoyed a tremendous season
sandwiched between his home track, the Madison International Speedway and the
traveling Big 8 Series. Riddle, who has a knack for getting all he can out of a
race car, stopped the clocks at 20.772 seconds for a lap to top all of the 55
qualifiers who signed in to battle at the season ender for the Big 8 Series in
Lacrosse, Wisconsin. Riddle started the 68-lap feature grind from ninth starting
place and began to work his way forward at the drop of the green flag. As the
race progressed, Jon Lemke set the pace but it was Skylar Holzhausen from 16th
starting spot and Riddle from ninth place that drew the attention of the large
crowd on hand for the weekend of racing festivities. Holzhausen slipped by
Riddle on lap-44 and continued his drive forward to leader Lemke and finally
wrestled the lead away on lap sixty and led the remaining laps to claim the win.
Lemke fell to Riddle as well as the "Showtime" kid raced into the runner-up slot
where he finished the event with Lemke in third place, Kyle Shear in fourth, Jon
Reynolds in fifth, Casey Johnson in sixth and Brad Powell completing the events
top seven finishers. Steve Rubeck drove a safe and conservative race and
finished 13th as he walked away with the Big 8 Series Championship as he ended
the chase with 791 points. Finishing in second place with 737 tallies was Dale
Nottestad with Jeremy Miller in third place with 668 points, Bobby Wilberg in
fourth with 641 markers, Kyle Shear in fifth with 640 points, Ty Majeski in
sixth with 587 tallies and Zack Riddle in seventh with 575 points. With the
seventh place finish Riddle moved up five notches from his 12th place finish
from a season ago.
"Showtime" Zack Riddle enjoyed a streak of three staright wins season and a
runner-up in points at Madison International Speedway during the regular season
and went one step further at the end of September when he captured the Fall
Classic at the speedway for his fourth win of the season at Madison in another
Big 8 Series event. 2011 track champion Jeremy Miller was the runner-up with
Dale Nottestad in third, Steve Rubeck in fourth, John Baumeister Jr in fifth and
Bobby Wilberg competing the top six finishers. The R&R Motorsports Team with
Zack Riddle at the controls enjoyed a great 2011 racing season and the excellent
showings at MIS and in the Big 8 Series will be the basis and foundation of how
the newly formed team in 2011 will plan and launch for the 2012 racing season
and will look at the future of their racing program. The R&R Motorsports Team
has been a successful adaptation of the successful Urban Force Racing program
that was launched in 2007 to give students a chance to learn about the working
facets of race cars while being educated to become automotive technicians
through their school curriculum.
Track champion Jeremy Miller once again captured the Madison track title with
960 points earned. Zack Riddle closed fast on Miller and landed in the runner-up
role with 918 points earned. Bobby Wilberg was third with 896 points scored and
Dale Nottestad was fourth with 813 tallies to his credit. Scott Broughton
dropped a couple of notches in the last few races and completed the top five
with 757 tallies. Ryan Goldade with 718 points to his credit headed up the
second five with Ty Majeski with 684, Kevin Knuese with 641, Chad Stevens with
601 and Ed Szelagowski with 557 points filling out the top ten finishers.
The pairing of Riddle with Urban Force Racing in 2010 has brought a great deal
of success to everyone in their initial season of competing together as a team
and the instant chemistry and friendship shared by everyone involved with the
team has put the newly developed R&R Motorsports Team front and center with the
student manned racing team. The initial season of the successful pairing in 2010
had Riddle finishing third in the final points tally for the season at the
Madison International Speedway and with the successful 2011 season run at the
speedway behind them albeit in the runner-up role, the quick progress of the
team and the bright future ahead of them will find the team seeking additional
rewards before the season is completed.
Zack Riddle has raised the bar in his career each step of the way as he began
his racing career in 2000 at the age of ten in the go kart divisions and raced
with them successfully until the end of the 2003 racing season. In 2004, Riddle
took his first ride in a Late Model type race car and ran an aborted season,
competing in just six events at the Madison International Speedway. Riddle began
to run the Late Model division as a regular in 2005 and has been a fixture at
the speedway ever since, winning his first feature at MIS in 2006. When the
Madison track ran Super Late Models in 2008, Riddle was selected as the Rookie
of the Year in the now defunct division. Riddle was also named the fan's
favorite driver in 2009, a title he also captured in 2006 and adding to his
"Showtime" nickname.
While Urban Force Racing now makes the transition to R&R Motorsports Team, the
group enjoyed a great history in motorsports since launching the initial program
in 2007 and has sought to improve upon their marks each succeeding year in
racing. Team Manager Pete Raskovic moves into a new role as co-owner of the race
team along with Crew Chief Steve Riddle. Raskovic who with the late ABC Supply
owner Ken Hendricks was able to forge ahead with the launching of the initial
program, has been the mainstay of the student oriented racing team is quite
proud of the success of the many students who have been educated within the
Urban Force Racing Team program.
The unique concept of teaching students the inner workings of a race car along
with all of the technical background in automotive technology, sets the Urban
Force program apart from the typical normal school day. The students are hands
on and work with a purpose as the program is the model for similar technical
programs across the country. The new student team for the 2011 racing season
consists Michael Raskovic, Jesse Tanner and Bryant Williams and the students
will be paired with the existing R&R/Urban Force Team members that include Team
Manager Pete Raskovic, Crew Chief Steve Riddle, Wes Arndt, Brett Guschinki,
County Judge James Beer. Sponsorship for the new R&R Motorsports Team is
provided by Diane Hendricks at ABC Supply Co. Additional sponsorship support
comes from Homberg Inc., Morgan Shoes, Keystone Farms Natural Cheese, Welders
Supply Company, GA Motorsports Media and CARQUEST Gasoline Alley, Vince's
Italian Restaurante, Big Radio WEKZ, Monroe WI.

Jake Griffin Finishes Second in ULMA Standings; Busy Weekend On Tap
Quincy, Illinois (10/11/11) –12 year-old, Jake Griffin may not have won the
championship, for which he had hoped, but he still finished an impressive second
in the final ULMA Late Model Series standings.
Jake was last in action two weeks ago as he took part in the final two ULMA
point's events of the 2011 season. On Saturday night, October 1st Jake made his
first trip of the year to Central Missouri Speedway (Warrensburg, Missouri), and
he would face an extremely talented field of competitors as 22 cars would enter
the program. After a solid second place run in his heat it would prove to be a
rough outing in the feature for Jake. While battling in the top five the second
place car would spin in front of Griffin, resulting in heavy right-side damage
to his car. Jake would continue until lap 9, when he had to finally retire with
the ill-handling entry. He would be credited with a 17th place finish in the
feature.
In the UMP Open Wheel Modified division, Jake would finish third in the heat
race before recording a 13th place finish in the feature. Full results are
available at
www.CentralMissouriSpeedway.net.
On Sunday night, October 2nd the team rolled into 24 Raceway (Moberly, Missouri)
for another night of doubleheader racing action. In the ULMA Late Model division
another strong field of 15 cars entered the event in what would be the
determining event for the ULMA Championship. In heat race action, Griffin
advanced from the third starting spot to a second place finish to earn the fifth
starting spot for the main event. He would battle in the top five throughout the
feature before finishing fifth behind race winner, Rylan Long, Jason Perry,
Jason Bodenhammer, and Kelly Smith. With the win Rylan Long claimed the
Crawdaddy's Classic Gourmet ULMA title, but Jake still finished a very strong
second, just six points removed from the lead. Even though it wasn't the
championship that the team wanted it was still a solid performance, and they are
very proud of their season accomplishments.
In the UMP Open Wheel Modified division, a big field of 26 entries were entered
and Jake finished 5th in his heat to lock into the 21st starting spot for the
feature. The main event would see him make a great run as he passed 14 cars on
his way to a seventh place finish at the checkered flag. Full results for both
divisions are available at
www.24racewayinmoberly.com.
This weekend, October 14th-15th, the team will travel to Tri City Speedway
(Pontoon Beach, Illinois) for a pair of Crate Late Model events. On Friday night
a $1,000-to-win event will be held, which will serve as the Pro Crate Racing
Association (PCRA) finale. On Saturday night the Bud 40, UMP Pro Crate Late
Model Championship will be held, which will post a $2,500 winner's check. For

ACCORD SPEEDWAY NEWS
Accord, NY- Accord Speedway Revises Schedule For Saturday's Wreckage In The
Catskills
By: Steve Pados, Accord Speedway Media
The King of the Catskills spectacular at the Accord Speedway was short circuited
by Mother Nature as the rain rolled in on Friday evening, September 30th and put
a halt to the show and cancelled out the exciting five division show that was
scheduled for Saturday, October 1st. After looking at their options and the
limited window of opportunity in which to host the event, the Palmer Family has
incorporated a portion of the cancelled Friday and Saturday programs into the
upcoming "Wreckage in the Catskills" showcase scheduled for this coming
Saturday, October 15th to top off the 2011 racing season at the Ulster County
racing attraction. The held-over 50-lap Sportsman event from Friday evening,
will go to the post with the field already set in place as 20 top Sportsman
stars will duke it out for the $2,000.00 slice of pie awaiting the winner in the
Lucas Oil Products Victory Lane. The starting lineup for the event is as follows
from front to back.........Shane Jablonka, Ryan Stortini, Charlie Hendrickson,
Anthony Perrego, Chris Stevens, Dave Werber, Greg McCloskey, Darrell Ford, Jesse
Marks, Vinny DeCicco, Mike Barrett, Steve Krom, Randy Green, Kevin Ward, Will
Dietz, Brad Szulewski, John Ferrier, Tyler Dippel, Sammy Piazza, Jerry Curry.
Second place man in points, John Roese will lead the contingent of DC
Landscaping Pro Stocks to the post on Saturday. Roese is coming off a year in
which he scored three wins during the season and came up just four points short
in landing the track title. Roese is the only Pro Stocker in the field that
utilizes a Ford motor for the go-power. Torin Betterton, fresh off a win
recently at Accord, will be back in the field along with third place man in
points Tom Vasta. Al Christiana, Paul Aragon, Jimmy Sykes, John Rood, Dave
Demorest, Ralph Ronk, Ron Rion, Clarence Smith and a host of outsiders will join
in seeking to gain their fair share of the Accord strongbox.
The Arkel Motors Pure Stock Division was highly entertaining all season long and
heading the list of hopefuls will be "The Intimidator" Ray Tarantino. Tarantino
comes into the weekend fresh off a four win season and his first track
championship performance at Accord. "The Rebel" Tim Brown returned to action for
the final event and the two time winner in 2011 always comes to the post with a
formidable hot rod. Ryan Johnson, Joe Narok, Gary Predmore, Jimmy Cuneo, Mike
Deyo, Steve Cooper, John Woinoski, Eugene Helms, Chris Kanuk, Harry Bachman and
a host of others will put on a great show for the fans come Saturday.
The National Junior Slingshot Tour comes into the Accord Speedway under a full
head of steam after a stunning exhibition a few weeks ago in the curtain closer
for the Hamlin Speedway. Twenty two "stars of tomorrow" competed at the final
Hamlin Speedway event and all indications is most of the great young talent will
be in action at Accord as well. Heading the list of talent will be Accord
regular "The Tornado" Tyler Johnston as the thirteen year old speedster comes
into the weekend with a fifty point lead over "The Midget" Chris Kurtz. in the
National rankings. Johnston hopes to end the season with the Junior Slingshot
title in hand as he will step into the Spec Sportsman ranks in 2012 aboard one
of the Sherlock Tri State Roofing speed buggies that Johnston debuted at Accord
recently and scored a fourteenth place finish in his initial performance. Kurtz
has been phenomenal in 2011 with his second place ranking on the tour and
runner-up finishes at both the Accord and Hamlin Speedways during the season.
"The Jonestown Jet" Kyle Gruber put in one show at Accord during the season and
the youngster has improved each time he buckles into the family owned racer and
now rests in third place on the tour. "Thrillin" Dylan Martin has been named the
2011 champion at Hamlin and has enjoyed great success in his limited appearances
at the Accord facility and will make the trek northward to Accord seeking more
of the same. Wyalusing regulars "The Abbey-nator" Abbey Price and Alex Shaffer
will land on the Accord grounds this weekend. For Price it will be her first
competition at Accord but Shaffer has been a limited visitor with great
credentials each time he arrives at the speedway. Shaffer is the Wyalusing track
champion for the 2011 racing season. Accord Speedway Junior Slingshot champion
"Kid Ice" Cole Hentschel will head the great list of talented drivers planting
their tire prints into the Accord clay this weekend. "The Predator" Kevin
Predmore, Brandon "Juan Pablo" McGill, "The Flash" Bobby Flood, Collin DuBois,
"The Bullville Bandit" Tommy Zwart, Michelle Campbell, Jared Labagh, Matthew
Shultz, third generation newcomer Kassidy Kreitz and a host of others will join
the parade onto the Accord Speedway grounds and the great Accord loyal fans will
see first hand that the future of auto racing is in great hands with the "stars
of tomorrow" working their magic on the high banks of the quarter mile Accord
speedplant.
The "Run What Ya Brung" Modified outing has always proved to be an interesting
combination of ingenuity and testing the limits of one's imagination as some
over the top creations have always arrived at the speedway when Promoter Gary
Palmer gives the competitors the green light to do so. Two seasons ago it was
Robbie Green returning to the spotlight with a big win in his only appearance of
the 2009 racing season and last year it was "Showtime" Danny Tyler sporting some
wild appendages on his race car to wing his way around the Accord high banks in
grand style to record the win. The creations will create the sensations when the
Modifieds roll onto the Accord clay.
For the crash, bang, boom portion of the day, Four and Six Cylinder Enduros will
traverse the speedway in extra distance events that will find the drivers
threading the needle all around the race track as the disabled cars remain on
the speedway as the racing continues. The action only stops if the track becomes
blocked and the drivers cannot proceed around the speedway. A great field of
cars is expected as the popular event brings out some of the speedway regulars
to try their hand at outlasting their rivals in some great fender rubbing and
bumper shedding racing action.
The ladies will have a go at it in the Powder Puff racing ordeals. The past few
years have seen the unforgiving boiler plate walls take some hard shots by the
ladies but still remains standing proud and to this day remains unbeatable in
the school of hard knocks.
Demolition Derby action will close the show as Four and Six Cylinder jalopies
will enter the Accord Concrete Square Arena and try their hand at shortening and
tearing the fenders off of their opponents machines. There will be plenty of
smoke, steam and junk machines smoldering when the final curtain falls on the
2011 racing season.
The Accord Speedway racing season was another great one even though Mother
Nature dropped in on occasion to rain on the Accord parade. All told nine
cancellations on Friday and three on Wednesday were necessitated by rain or some
atrocity of the weather that included the Hurricane Irene deluge that knocked
out power in Ulster County for nine days.
Even so, the racing action was extraordinary as the competition in all divisions
goes the extra mile to put on a great show for the loyal Accord fan base.
Promoter Gary Palmer continues to work his magic on the racy quarter mile
speedplant and the side by side, three and four wide racing action is a tribute
to the time and effort Palmer puts into the facility that attracts a fan base
from six states on a weekly basis. The ten division show on Saturday is a total
bargain for the racing fans as each competing division has it's own stars and
fanfare and will create a rocking great time in the foothills of Ulster County.
October 15th finds the "Wreckage in the Catskills" hitting the Ulster County
scene with WLR Construction serving as the headline sponsor for the event. Pit
Gates open at 11 AM; Spectator Gates open at Noon; Hot Laps are at 1:30 and the
racing begins at 2 PM. Admission for this special weekend is as follows: Adults
$12.00 (12+) Children $3.00 (11+ under) Indoor Seating is available on a limited
basis; Family four pack special: 2 Adults + 2 Children and $20.00 in Food
Vouchers for $40.00 ( a savings of $10.00).
Racing fans should make their plans for the exciting "Wreckage in the Catskills"
weekend of great racing on October 15th. With ten diverse divisions of racing on
the schedule, every true racing fan will want to make sure they are in
attendance to take in every second of the great competition that will unfold.

THUNDER ON THE HILL RACING SERIES
HALLOWEEN PARTY & GRANDVIEW THUNDER 5-25'S OFFERS MORE TREATS THEN TRICKS. . . .
. .
VERTICAL WAVE TELEPHONE SYSTEMS POST $475 IN CASH FOR FANS IN THUNDER SERIES
FINALE AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY SATURDAY, OCTOBER 15
Plenty of fun and a great racing program is set for the Grandview Speedway this
Saturday night, October 15 when the NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill Racing
Series drops the checker flag on their 2011 season. The Thunder Series, known
for variety and unique racing programs, will bring it all together with the
season finale, the House of Thunder Halloween Party and Grandview Thunder
5-25's. This features only program brings together five different divisions of
dirt track racing, rarely, if ever seen on one night at any other track. The
five division features only program will showcase the 358 Modifieds, URC
Sprints, ARDC Midgets, Sportsman and Legends along with the Vince's Towing
Legend Owners Race, the Garden State Vintage Cars and a Monster Smash Demolition
Derby. The show will all get underway at 6 PM.
With thanks to Jim Gallagher and Vertical Wave Telephone Communications, some
$475 in cash will be distributed to the race fans. First off, the three best
costumes of the night will earn $75, $50 and $25 respectfully and, the winners
will be invited to take part in the always joyous victory lane ceremonies. With
help from the Racer's Roundtable gals, Vertical will have a ball toss, throwing
a minimum of twenty balls into the crowd that carry a value from $5 to two balls
with a $50 value. The treats will continue with plenty of Halloween Candy
provide by the Palmer Candy Company of Reading, PA.
A new twist to the show will be the Trick or Treat Revenge Redraw for the
modifieds. The modifieds will compete in timed warm-ups to determine the
starting line-up that will lead to the Trick or Treat Revenge Redraw. The top
eight drivers in times will redraw for the top eight starting positions in the
25 lap feature event. The twist is this, the fast time of the night will be
first to draw, the driver then takes his draw number and he must give it to
anyone of the other seven drivers. That draw number could be a trick or a treat
for the driver receiving that number. Second fast time of the night will be next
to draw and he will hand off that number to anyone of the remaining drivers. The
draw will continue until all eight numbers are assigned. So in fact, the top
eight drivers in times will determine the top eight starting spots. Positions
ninth through twenty will line-up according to their times from warm-ups.
The features only event will begin at 6 PM with the 25 lap Palmer Candy Legends
feature followed by the ARDC Midgets, the 10 lap Vince's Towing Legend Owners
race and BFP Specialty Sportsman feature. There will be warm-ups for the
Modifieds and URC Sprints followed by the 12 lap Vintage Car feature. The
nightcap will showcase the $3,000 to win BPG 25 lap 358 Modified feature and the
$3,000 to win PPB URC Feature. The homestretch will then transform to be the
battleground for the Monster Smash Demolition Derby.
URC will have their point championship decided in their twenty-five lap feature
that will include four time winner this season JJ Grasso, defending and seven
time URC champion Curt Michael, Dave Ely, Kramer Williamson, Ed Aikin, Robbie
Stillwaggon and Randy West. The URC feature sponsored by PPB will pay $3,000 but
there is more. If the winner is running Viper-Venom fuel and has their decal
displayed, an additional $1,000 bonus will go to the winner.
In the BFD Specialty Sportsman field, entries include Mike Loney, Doug
Hendricks, Kevin Beach, Jared Umbenhauer, Brad Brightbill, Sammy Piazza and Mike
Mammana. The sportsman will also follow the format of timed warm-ups to
determine the starting line-up. In the ARDC line-up, expect Steve, Tim and Bruce
Buckwalter, Ryan Watt, Eric Heydenreich, Ryan Smith and Brett Arndt. Last by not
least, Legend entries include Scott Gobrecht, Harlon Leppo, Tim Henry and Mike
Roberts.
More than 120 race cars will fill the Grandview pits for this very unique racing
program that will showcase five premier divisions of dirt track racing to close
out the season.
Legend Owners are asked to pre-enter the Vince's Towing event by calling Bob
Miller at 443-513-4456. Please be sure to provide you name and car number.
It's a big night of racing filled with talented drivers and great racing along
with some special trick or treat activities. Race fans are encouraged to dress
up for Halloween and join the feature winners in the always joyous victory lane.

Matt Hirschman Earns First “King of the Mountain” in Ten Years at Mountain
Speedway
By: Gene Ostrowski
October9, 2011
St. Johns, Pa- In conjunction with Day two of the 12th annual “King of the
Mountain” (KoTM) event at Mountain Speedway, a slew of race cars and fans headed
to the track on Sunday to not only see who will claim the $5,000 Modified prize,
but also to see who the 2011 track champions would be in the final points event
of the season. When it was all said and done, Matt Hirschman of Northampton, PA
rebounded from a spin earlier to claim the big money and his first KoTM victory
since 2001. Nicknamed “The Rocket”, Ricky Ross, Jr. of Mountaintop, PA started
eleventh and then rocketed to the $1,000 Street Stock victory and Pete Verwys of
Stroudsburg, PA stormed to his fourth straight FWD feature win.
With 34 Modifieds in the pit area, qualifying was important to the drivers, as
the top 15 fastest time trailers were assured a spot in the big 150-lap show.
Matt Hirschman timed fastest with what is believed to be a new track record at a
time of 13.188 seconds. The top ten drivers redrew for starting spots, which put
Chuck Hossfeld on the pole position.
Hossfeld led the 29-car starting field to the drop of the green flag and led the
opening circuit over Todd Baer, Earl Paules, Roger Coss and Justin Gumley.
However, only one lap later, Baer took the top spot and Paules followed through
to take second.
Content to run to the finish, Paules didn’t put much pressure on the leader
early on, but he did take the lead on a lap 22 restart following the first
yellow flag. Hossfeld also got by Baer on the restart and grabbed second.
With Paules still in command, the red flag waved on lap 30 when Travis Fisher
and Brad Van Houten tangled in turn four following a restart. Several drivers
pitted under the lap 30 caution periods, including Rusty Smith, Matt Higgins,
Eddie Brunnhoelzl III and Kyle Ebersole.
Green flag racing resumed and with 40 laps complete, Paules led over Hossfeld,
Matt Hirschman, Zane Zeiner and Nick Pecko. However, the yellow flag waved six
laps later when the leaders were racing in lapped traffic. A lapped car slid up
the track and slowed up Hirschman, which caused many of the other front-runners
to instantly check up, including Zeiner, John Fortin and Brian DeFebo. Hirschman
was the only one of the three that was able to continue.
With the green back out and Paules in command, the yellow struck once again,
this time on lap 66 when Tommy Wanick III got into Hirschman and took him around
in turn four. Despite the spin, Hirschman didn’t pit for tires.
Paules continued out front following the restart, but a quick yellow slowed the
action once again on lap 72. With a great restart, Hossfeld took the race lead.
Paules dropped to second and was hounded by Pecko, followed by Ebersole and
Gumley.
It appeared that Hossfeld had the car to beat, but that all changed following a
lap 91 yellow, which involved a spin by John Markovic. Several of the
front-runners pitted for tires, including Hossfeld, Paules, Pecko and Gumley.
Hossfeld got back on track first, but only to find his right rear wheel chasing
him down the backstretch. Hossfeld did head back to the pits and retuned to the
speedway.
The pit stops moved Barry Callavini to the point for the restart and he led a
lap before Bobby Jones on lap 92 overtook him. Jones then led two circuits
before Paules overtook him. With 50 laps remaining, Paules was out front, with
Pecko, Hirschman and Darren Scherer in tow. During the same lap and while racing
three-wide for the fifth spot, Coss, Gumley and Callavini took things
three-wide. The end result was a very tore up racecar for Coss, who found
himself in the turn four fence.
Green flag racing resumed and it became apparent that Hirschman was on a
mission. He overtook the strong running Pecko for second on lap 112 and then
slipped underneath Paules for the race lead in turns three and four 16 laps
later.
Despite three yellow flags after taking the lead, Hirschman remained out front
and could not be denied his second career KoTM victory. Paules was forced to
settle for second, followed by Jones, who won raced his way in through the consi
and also clinched the Modified title two weeks prior. Pecko and Gumley completed
the top five.
Hirschman reminisced in victory lane about what he called his best career
victory, his KoTM victory in 2001.
“This win is huge and that first King of the Mountain victory in John Markovic’s
back up car in 2001 is what first got me noticed and helped me land a lot of
good rides since then”, noted Hirschman.
Jeff McGrath led twenty other hungry Street Stock drivers to the drop of the
green flag in the 50-lap feature before the yellow flag waved when Daryn Miller
slowed on the initial green. Dale Santee got clipped and headed head on into the
front stretch guiderail and somehow hit the pits and was able to continue.
Green flag racing resumed and Chris Burge took the top spot. McGrath slipped to
second, with Robert Fink, Alan Schlenker and Miller in tow.
The race was slowed on lap seven when Chip Wanamaker got into Rich DiMarco in
turn two. Wanamaker, who was vying for the divisional championship with Steve
Shultz, was forced to restart from the rear of the field with DiMarco for the
restart. Prior to the caution, Brian Wozniak climbed to second.
With the green back out and with what appeared to be the car to beat at the
time, Wozniak got around the leader using an outside maneuver on lap nine.
However, that went by the wayside when Burge made contact with the leader and
they both spun in turn two on lap 10. Just behind in turn one, DiMarco tangled
with Wanamaker, who sustained heavy damage, which dashed his championship hopes.
When it was all sorted out, McGrath was shown as the leader, followed by TJ
Gursky, Mike Garris, Sr, Ricky Ross, Jr. and Steve Shultz.
Under green once again, McGrath held off his competition and began to pull away
as they battle behind him. Craig Lutz, who had moved into third a few laps
earlier, lost the spot to Ross. Ross then moved by Gursky for second and Shultz
followed to third.
The yellow waved when Justin Mooney and Garris tangled on lap 32. With the green
flag back out, Ross took the lead on the following circuit before Mooney and
Garris tangled once again, this time in turns one and two, bringing out the red
flag. Both drivers appeared to be okay following the hard crash.
Green flag racing resumed and Ross went on to claim not only his first feature
win of the season, but also his first KoTM Street Stock victory. Lutz, who got
by McGrath for second with 16 laps remaining, settled for second, followed by
McGrath, Shultz and Wozniak. With his fourth place effort, Shultz was declared
the division champion.
Heat race wins went to Brian Wozniak, Daryn Miller and Jeff McGrath. Justin
Mooney was the consi victor.
Jay Skupski led his fellow FWD drivers to the drop of the green flag in the
40-lap feature and led the opening circuit over Dylan Hoffman, Robert Fink,
Trevor Ahouse and Justin Hughes before the yellow flew when Keith Frankenfield
and Harry Sager tangled in turn one.
With the green flag back out and with Skupski still in command, Pete Verwys got
by Ahouse and Eric Banashefski for the fourth spot on lap six. Two laps later he
ran third behind Skupski and Hoffman.
Lap 12 got exciting, as Verwys made a three-wide pass for the lead stick and he
took command of the race. Cody Roth came up and into the second spot, followed
by Dave Freundt, Hughes and Banashefski, who was looking for a solid run to
claim the divisional championship.
Freundt got by Roth for second and set his sights on the leader, but Verwys held
him off over the closing laps to claim not only the KoTM victory, but also his
fourth straight and fifth overall win of the season. Roth finished in the third
spot, followed by Hughes and Banashefski, who claimed his first divisional
championship.
Heat race victories went to Cody Roth, Dave Freundt and Pete Verwys.
